Would S Beam be possible on Galaxy Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So with the release of the Galaxy S III comes what Google should have had when they included NFC into its Android OS. IMO, one of the best features of the new SIII is the S Beam (enhanced NFC technology enabling transfer of files with Wi-Fi Direct from what i understand). Now i see the G Nex has wi-fi direct in its settings. Would this be something that can be ported over to the Galaxy Nexus?

Isn't Android Beam the same thing, which is included in Android 4.x.x
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

It is except for sending large files over wifi direct.

Read up on Bluetooth 3.0 and 4.0 specs. Samsung branded tech that is already established.
let it be.

All that S Beam is doing is using NFC to initiate the communication by sending MAC and IP address details, and then the phones create an ad-hoc wifi network to transfer the files. Wifi Direct is already built into Android 4.0, Samsung just made some fancy scripts to initiate it through NFC.
The real challenge with something like this is integrating hooks or plugins that add support for all the various data and file types you want to be able to send over Wifi Direct. A lot of apps don't have an action set for when you're trying to use Android Beam, such as the Gallery app or your favorite file manager, and this is because Android Beam doesn't yet initiate a Wifi Direct session like what S Beam does.
The quick and dirty solution to this is to write an app that imitates S Beam without needing Touchwiz, and just add it as another "Share" option when you're viewing files stored on your device. It's an extra step for the user since it's not going to hook into the app automatically, but it will integrate nicely with any app that has the built in sharing function. For instance, this means when you're viewing something in the Gallery nothing is going to happen automatically when you hold up your phone to someone else's, but once you hit the Share button you'll get the option to send it over Wifi Direct.

with this tech thats established, am i able to tap phones together to share files? If so that'd be great!! i was hoping for exact replication of what S Beam provides. Ease of Use - tap the phones together and instantly share files. If i have to swipe down to activate bluetooth and then choose what file i want to send, its not as intuitive as tapping two phones together.

All um saying is the tech is already there and Samsung put an s on it. It needs to be implemented of course. By app, os or whatever. And our phones have 4.0 but only 3.0 is on spec sheet.
let it be.

I remember when the Nexus first came out people were suggesting the same exact solution for sending large files, but no one seemed really interested in it (probably because NFC-enabled phones aren't very widespread). Good to see Samsung has led the way in this and hopefully Google will put the feature in AOSP at some point.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk 2

The tech is there. Bluetooth by itself isn't very efficient for larger files or greater than across small room distance. Nfc is just for links and small images really. I did transfer a few gigs in a reasonable time using astro Bluetooth. I don't know for sure if anything is actually using the wifi part when bt 3/4.0 is lacking. I am guessing that Samsung is putting it out there now. Google needs to step up the game with nfc, wallet and bt 3/4.0. USB mass storage would be a lot less of an issue for more people. But so would having more storage on the phone also.
let it be.

S Beam and Android Beam is the same thing,,,,, Anybody thought about S Voice? It would be groundbreaking if anybody could port it

wifi direct on gnex
So, the only problem is that the nexus doesn't have the software to s beam, BUT it has the hardware. I've tried every ROM imaginable for my Nexus and the s3 touchwiz5. Bluetooth seems like it would take the fun out of beaming.

This is not true. S Beam is an "enhanced" version of Android Beam. Android Beam is intended to share very little files... like contacts file... for example you can't share an image!

If you're lucky enough to have JellyBean on your GNex, check out this app

I was just watching the Google IO Keynote live stream (I know, everyone's ideal way to spend a nice afternoon), and I saw this company that was getting featured by Android called Ekata Systems who launched their app Tapestry at the show. It seems to be a synchronized slideshow between JB devices with some snazzy twists that I've never seen any app do. It works best when you're trying it with a friend/family member so there are at least two devices (phone and/or tablet) to highlight the features though. You can check out the interview here, and the app here.
Talk about bleeding edge...only available on Jelly Bean. It uses this new feature called WiFi Direct that creates a local P2P network between 1:N clients. I'm playing with it with my co-workers and it is pretty sweet.
Is it for sure only for JB? The image in the app info shows a GSII and a Droid RAZR.

You've got a good eye! Since I have a JB Galaxy Nexus and an N7, I can see the app in Google Play. But my friends who run an older distribution, can't even search for the app in the app store. As far as I know it only runs on JB.

I tried the app w/ my wife, who has a GNex running JB, and I have a brand spank'n new N7. It was awesome seeing the phone control a slideshow on the bigger screen of the N7, and we were scrolling through her pictures. It is almost like a mobile power point slideshow. There is a nifty feature we discovered, where if you do a swipe gesture on the viewing device, the image downloads directly to the device...which is weird because my N7 was not connected to WiFi at the time. Anyone know how it could've gotten the file without being connected to a WiFi AP? I heard something about WiFi Director but don't know what that is.
I did a quick search, and WiFi Direct is essentially a P2P protocol over WiFi. It doesn't required a live WiFi AP connection, so it works pretty much anywhere. I don't think I've seen any app use WiFi Direct, so thought it was pretty neat.

Less community....watching the guy talk about it in his Google IO video...I think that is almost the point. It is not to go wide and online and asynchronous....but closer and more intimate and more synchronous. A completely different approach to the experience of photo sharing.

Yeah, sounds like from the feedback of another member that the Nexus S, although running JB, doesn't support WiFi Direct so it may not work. Pretty sweet when you get it going though. Time to buy a Nexus 7 so you can hook up with your wife's GNex!

Crittias. I just got an auto-update notice a few days ago that Tapestry has updated, and supposed it supports all the way back to Gingerbread. Sharp move, since not everyone is going to have JellyBean devices, so with Gingerbread, 85%+ of Android users can finally use the app. Should come in handy this holiday season when using the app, since nobody else in my entire family has JellyBean. NFC Problems between S3 and Nexus 7

Not sure what the deal is. I have tried sending pics, links and mp3s with no luck. I have the settings toggled on... What am I missing? Thanks
Samsung forces you to use their proprietary S-Beam to beam stuff with other devices. These other devices also need S-Beam for it to work. The Nexus 7 isn't a samsung device so it uses the regular Android Beam, which doesn't work with the Galaxy s3.
Supposedly with the Jellybean update, you aren't required to use S-beam and you can still beam files with android-beam if it's disabled. Until then, you have to install CM10 if you want to beam with another non-samsung device.

Observation
What i have observed is... I cn send pics from nexus to s3... But not other way around... Even play window pops up on nexus....
it finally worked
I have just successfully sent a picture from my S3 to my nexus 7. All I had to do is turn off s beam and it works fine. Really don't know why Samsung included s beam. It is pointless.
still fails
Well, this isn't working for me. I'm using a stock nexus 7, not even rooted. My SIII is rooted and running People's ROM 3.10. Turning the phone sideways in relation to the tablet helps as did turning off S-beam on the phone. Prior to doing this, the beam didn't seem to even start.
But what I am seeing now on the tablet are an "incoming beam" message, followed by several downloading indicators (the downward moving arrow) and finally a "beam did not complete" message. These are showing up on the tablet.
I'm trying to move a .jpeg taken on the phone over to the tablet for editing and ultimately posting it to Facebook. I've tried it with a couple of different .jpegs.
Update
I got this to work today. Elsewhere, I read that the NFC chip is actually on the battery, and not in the phone itself or built into the Android opsys. Today, I swapped batteries and it worked beautifully with the spare. So it seems (to me at least) to be related to which of my two batteries I use. Both were bought at the time I bought the phone directly from Sprint during a Black Friday sale, so they should be identical. Apparently one may be defective in this area.

Which Apps Work and Which Ones Don’t?
Apps that work with Android Beam
Here is a list of apps that work with Android Beam followed by any issues they may have.
aCalendar
Any.Do – This task management app lets you beam assignments to co-workers
Chrome
Clover Pay
Contacts (Android 4.0) – This app seems to be a little temperamental. Wait until the screen gets small before you tap it. This takes about four seconds. Then tap near the photo area.
Gmail
Gallery – only works when Android 4.1 is installed
Google Play – Android Beam pushes a link to the app’s details page in Google Play. On the other device, Google Play launches and loads the details page, for easy downloading of the app.
Google Earth
Google I/O 2012
Google Maps
Internet (stock Android 4.0 browser)
Just Player
Local – Maps, but nothing else
MonTransit
Navigation
NFC Reader
Paper Camera
Pattrn
People (Android 4.1)
Shazam
Shazam Encore
Songkick Concerts
StumbleUpon
WiFiBeam – This app can pass WiFi setup info from one device to another
YouTube – Can’t beam ads, skip any ads before beaming.
This is a partial list of the apps which work with Android Beam. As I find more apps that work, I’ll add them here.
Apps that don’t work with Android Beam
Calculator
Currents – Loads app, but not selected article
Gallery
Google Now – Cards can’t be sent
Google+
Play Music (appears to work on Android 4.0, but music is not transferred immediately)
Samsung’s Calendar
Street View on Google Maps

[Dev] boot2gecko for the verizon galaxy nexus

First off, let me tell you that this is super sketchy right now. If you were looking for something stable, then leave. This is the exact opposite.
I am working to port mozilla's boot2gecko to the galaxy nexus, so before you ask, here's what works & what dosent:
Works:
Touchscreen
ADB
Wi-Fi
Firefox
Lockscreen
homescreen
...well yeah you get the point, but more importantly, what dosen't/partially works:
Cell service (1x, 3g, and 4g)
screenshot
camera only sometimes works
no softkeys
All resources are designed for hdpi, so everything's a bit small
Downloads:
Build 1 (9/3/12) http://goo.im/devs/jellybellys/toro/boot2gecko/b2g-toro-b1-dont-flash-in-recovery.zip
Build 1 MD5: d8e70323e56b4568f6c2d504d0cceab0
Build 2 (9/3/12) http://goo.im/devs/jellybellys/toro/boot2gecko/b2g-toro-b2-dont-flash-in-recovery.zip
Build 2 MD5: 9a2db2d4d0673b25b8dd01aab8d39e04
To do list:
Implement some sorta softkey thing
Fix cell service
Resize resources to about a 300 dpi
Fix screenshot
Low priority to do list:
Implement android apps and google play store
If you know something about developing android, or html5, pm/reply so you can help contribute.
Oh yeah, don't flash in recovery. Open up the zip and flash the img files in there. Back up your internal memory first because it'll be wiped.
I was just going to start this as I have lots free time at the moment. And was just going to start setting up my "environment" here in the next week. I'll be more then happy to help. I was thinking something in the way of html5 soft keys. At least a back button. I'm more then happy to hop on this band wagon. I need something to do with my time. And I have always wanted to build something custom for my phone.

[APP][UPDATED] SuperBeam - Blazing fast file sharing using NFC+WiFi Direct [V2.0]

SuperBeam is a free app that offers easy and fast sharing files between Android 4.0+ devices using WiFi Direct. You can initiate connection between devices using QR Code scanning (with the included scanner) or NFC if available (just like Samsung's proprietary S-Beam).
Checkout the video below to see it in action:
Features:
Share files between devices using NFC or QR code scanning.
Blazing fast transfer speeds using WiFi direct.
Switches to hotspot mode automatically for devices that doesn't support WiFi direct.
Can use existing WiFi network connection between devices.
Share single or multiple files of any type (photos, videos, zip files, APK's... You name it!)
Works with all 3rd party file managers and photo galleries.
Light and dark color themes.
Advanced settings for geeks!
Google Play link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam
A note about WiFi direct
SuperBeam creates an access point using Android's WiFi direct API's. This essentially works like hotspot mode in old devices, but it is guaranteed to work on newer devices like Nexus 7. Moreover, this mode allows older devices to connect and receive files without having to support WiFi direct's peer-to-peer connections and, more importantly, it gets rid of the annoying "accept connection" prompt.
Also, please note that this mode is currently supported by Android versions 4.1 and greater. On older versions, SuperBeam will fallback to the older hotspot mode.
Please try it and let me know what you think. If you have any issues or suggestions, please feel free to contact me via email or reply to this thread.
This works great with me N7, GS3 and GNex thank you very much, I'll leave a 5 star review for you.

WiFi direct is planned to be included in the next release, however, it still suffers from buggy implementation and requires user approval for each connection, which is not a smooth user experience.

Obviously, this feature would only apply to devices that already contain the necessary internal hardware (such as Samsung devices that come stock with AllShare Cast (not AllShare Play which is just a WiFi-Direct/dlna push app))
With dlna/WiFi-direct you can, with the press of one button, send almost any picture, movie, or sound file to a smart device. Which always works for me.
With Miracast (also known as Wireless-Display) you can show your whole device screen on your TV so you can do whatever you want on your phone, but show it on your TV at the same time.
So why is this feature not only NOT included in most ROMs, but the stock feature itself has been stripped from the ROMs as well??
How do I get it?
My brain is so close to exploding I can feel the cold hand of Death on my shoulder

Does anybody use screen mirroring? Or am I asking about a feature that the only one interested in it is me

I use it to mirror my phone on my appradio 2 in my car. I asked this question long ago in a thread which u replied to. It looks like we are the only 2 who care

My opinion is pure speculation.
I would imagine that since our device has not had an official release above 4.1.2, Miracast is probably something that is low on any dev's priority list (as was HDMI out for a long time for AOSP etc... hell I don't even know if it has been fixed).
I would imagine that it would be pretty hard to build or cook into a ROM for our device since we do not have the official drop (yet) and on top of that, it would be pretty hard to test since it seems only two/three members of these Note II threads are wondering about it (although it would be a neat feature). IMHO anything that I would share with my TV would be photos and videos; both are easily accessed through my DLNA device (PS3) over WLAN.
Also, there is the external hardware needed for Miracast to work and I can imagine a lot of us do not have said device (Push2TV or a Miracast certified HDTV) and so to test it, a dev would have to go out and grab it or count on the community to have it for testing... I think a lot of that energy and time would probably be best put towards stability and solving more "popular" issues.
Again, pure speculation.
It would be a neat feature but after all of the reviews I've seen on it, there needs to be a lot of work done to smooth it out in the first place.
Damn shame too... AppleTV's got this feature down very well...
You guys want to take a look into the Chromecast threads.
I'll just say this I have All Cast working again on my device no problem:thumbup:
I DO understand we'll like the mirroring thing to work but maybe it'll take sometime to get it functioning correctly.
But you can take a look HERE:
