[Q] Questions regarding kernels and rom - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Long time lurker, first time poster :3. Anyways, I have a few questions regarding the flashing of ROMs and kernels. I have been looking around for a nice ROM(s) or a kernel(s) to flash the t989. Currently I am running on rooted stock and want to mix it up a bit. I came across the Darkside X v1 Final kernel located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466283&page=44 .
Now the question is can I flash this kernel but retain the stock ROM?
- any advantages vs flashing kernel and a new ROM?
- disadvantages?
Is there anything that I should be concerned about, or pay special attention to before proceeding with this?
Thanks!

(1) Yes you can, just wipe cache and dalvik cache prior to flashing kernel
(2) Depends on what the kernel has to offer. I'm not super well informed on tdjs kernel but for one you get BLN support which is great. You also get performance and battery enhancements plus many other goodies.
(3) Not really, any kernel on these forums is better than stock so you're looking at nothing but advantages.
(4) As long as you follow the proper steps to installing a kernel you should be fine. Common sense is your friend. Once you flash a specific kernel you might want to look at under clocking and under vaulting to extend your battery life with minimal performance decrease.
BONUS: TDJ's Darkside ROM and Eugenes Streamline Kernel are the best for me. Great stability, battery and performance. Refer to my signature for links.
Best of luck

The best advice I can give is Back up your stock rom with rom manager and back your apps with titanium, after that you can flash flash any rom and take it on a test drive to see how it feels. If you see it's buggy you can go back to the stock you had to begin with like you never did a thing.
Personalty I tried most of the ICS roms an found bugs I just couldn't deal with in one way or another. I did find this ICS rom today
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623430
This has the leaked tmo kernel and radio making it almost the complete update we so deserve lol. anyway I put it on today and sofar all I could say is it is sweet no bugs this far and love the ICS......
Last advice is before flash do the darkside super wipe this does a better job then just wipe cache and dalvik cache and you dont lose the data you have backed up.
Oh also follow the directions from any rom to the tee to lessen the chance for problems

[Q] Questions regarding kernels and romArrow
Thanks for the input guys. Right now, I would like to experiment with a new kernel before going full-blown with a ROM...I will likely do that later down the road.
Now, while I was reading up on the various kernels and their offerings, another question popped into my head. Will flashing the phone with a new kernel purge pre-existing applications and settings? I will be backing up regardless, but I just thought I'd ask.

[Q] How do I install a Kernal?

Hey guys and the NEWBIE (me) is back...
1. How do i get the SBC kernal??? I heard its a great kernal for extended battery life
2.How do i install it? I currently have CM7 installed as a rom
Thanks
Go search the Android Development section for AOSP kernels and find one that supports SBC. I think Savaged-Zen kernels and Tiamat kernels are the best and have sbc choices.
kernel manager in the market, its the easiest way

Bump +1 for kernel manager. Make sure you spell kernel correctly, else you may not find it. Free version works fine as a newbie user.
Thanks everyone
In general:
1) Dowload kernel to the root of your phone and boot into recovery
2) Wipe davlik
3) Wipe cache
4) Install kernel from the root of your phone and reboot
Go to "About Phone" to check the kernel
OR, download Kernel Manager.

jsantos, what the guys said above is a great start... not to fear-monger or anything, but do you know exactly what the kernel is, and the various types of kernels that are out there? I'm not one to discourage the use of any particular type of kernel/ROM, but before diving headfirst into it without really knowing the ups/downs of it, it'd behoove you to make sure you know what you're getting into. That being said, I dug up some links that should help you out.
Here is a link regarding SBC kernels that you probably should check out, as it pertains to potential major issues with them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890448
Here is a link to probably the best guide on explaining kernels for the EVO, brought to you by mroneeyedboh... this page explains the various categories of kernels, and how they affect your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894880
Finally, here is a link to a page written by skydeaner, containing testing and benchmark information on many many different kernels for the EVO (including SBC and non-SBC variants), which may help you determine which kernel is actually best for your needs:

Ready to flash. Which ROM should be #1?

Just finished unlocking, rooting and getting my GeNex all dialed.
After all that work (I had some trouble but managed to figure it out after several frustrating hours) I am definitely ready to reward myself with a new ROM.
From what I can tell there doesn't appear to be that many.
Any recommendations on a good one to start with?
My first instinct is to go with Android Revolution HD based on the amount of pages on that thread.
I would recommend either as you say ARHD or Modaco's custom ROM's there both good ROM's and well supported. I'd also suggest if you want OC/UV then use a custom Kernel with either ROM..
Personally Im using Modaco's ROM with Francos Kernel. Both can be found in the Dev section..
Happy flashing.
P.s make a Nandroid of your stock ROM incase you ever want to return to stock.
Thanks, mklass!
First thing I did when I got CWM on there was nandroid. Thanks for the info. I haven't seen the Modaco yet so I'll check that out for sure.
Any news or rumors on MIUI 4??

Most Stable Custom ROM?

Hi,
I have finally purchased a micro SD card and I am considering switching to one of the many optional custom ROMs available for our phone. There are a lot of great Dev's that have put in long hours to bring us these choices and I first off want to thank them for their hard work.
From my understanding a custom ROM can greatly improve battery life, speed and performance over what a stock ROM can give you. I also understand a lot of the Bloat ware has been removed as well and there are more customizable options in these ROMs.
However, the most important feature to me is stability since the phone I use is my daily driver. I will admit that the one thing I am impressed with the stock ROM is the stability. Everything on the phone works and works well.
Having said this, out of all the currently available custom ROMs, which is the most stable that can be used as my daily driver? I know this is a hobby and most ROMs are for testing, but which out of the bunch are the most stable and have everything working smoothly without tweaking or without needing additional updates?
I am new to this so I am ready to try something new and improved. However, I wouldn't be the type of person who would want to flash a new ROM, try it out and then flash something else. Kinda just want to update and stick with it.
I look forward to the responses I receive on the above question. Thanks again.

I would suggest digital warfare v2.5.1. Close to stock, very stable, great battery life. Juggernaut is definitely more experimental (although still stable) but the undervolt doesn't play well sith some phones. Paradox and Blu-Ray are both heavily themed but otherwise stable. If you're looking for a stock ROM with better battery, go for digital warfare.
Any ics ROM at this point is definitely too experimental for your tastes, stay away if you want one flash and be done with it.

Thanks for the response. Yourself and linye have both suggested Digital Warfare. I have researched the ROM and it seems pretty stable. The only issue right now is how to download the ROM? I see the developer thederekjay has closed the thread and it doesn't look like the ROM is available on XDA anymore. Any ideas where else I could find this ROM? Thank you again.
You can download it here.
Don't forget to add the necessary flags (addressed in TDJ's original post in that thread)

Thank you very much. Since this will be my first time doing this I just wanted to confirm. When I download the DARKSIDE.DIGITAL.WARFARE_v2_TDJ.zip file, before placing it on my SD card and flashing I should rename the file as per below example:
DARKSIDE.DIGITAL.WARFARE_v2_TDJ-wipe-twmod.zip
This in essence will:
-wipe = A full wipe that is much more through and is HIGHLY suggested over any wipe options in recovery menu. It will also format partitions to EXT4 (NOTE: THIS WILL DELETE ALL USER DATA! DOESN'T TOUCH SD CARD/EMMC!)
-twmod = Installs a 5x4x5 modified TW Launcher. (See screen shot below)
It will also install the ROM as well?
Or is there something else I would need to do? Thanks again for all your help.
You're good with that

You got it. Just backup what you need to backup and flash that zip in cwm and you're good to go!
Darkside digital warfare works best for me. I underclock to 1.03 and get about a day or more with med use.

ROM question about flashing!

I am interested in running some ROM's on my galaxy nexus but I have a few questions:
I am looking at Peter Alfonso's Bugless Beast 4.1 ROM, I know that he does nightly builds, so my question being: If I install a build today, and he releases a nightly tomorrow or an upgrade, do I have to completely wipe and reflash the build nightly in order for it to stay up to date? Or is there a way to just update the build without losing everything.
Are ROM's safe? I know that they say to stay away from things like this but I feel like I can get the most out of my device by using a custom ROM.
If I don't go with a bugless beast ROM I am looking for something that is AS CLOSE to stock as possible, no added bloatware, I don't need all the fancy menu tweaks, custom kernals (which I guess I just dont understand exactly what a custom kernal does)
Any comments would be appreciated.
You can dirty flash them (flash it directly without wiping) and most of the time it will work without issues. If it doesn't then you will have to wipe then reflash.
ROMs are perfectly safe, and it's pretty hard to actually brick your phone. I'd say that custom ROMs offer customisation more than anything else but that's probably me.
Cyanogenmod is very well known in the community (and is rock solid) as well as AOKP (offers much more customisability at the moment).
Custom roms can help extend the life of a device. I know that I would have gotten tired of my previous phone, the Samsung Captivate, a lot sooner than I did if I hadn't flashed ICS onto it. Roms are completely safe. You just want to make sure you read up on how to fix a boot loop, or soft brick if you do end up in the situation. Make backups, have a plan B set and flash away. Definitely don't just go flashing stuff haphazardly, that's how you can mess up your phone.
You don't have to wipe when flashing nightlies on the same ROM. You don't lose data, its just like an update ota. you only have to wipe when switching between different ROMs.
Roms= 100% better than stock

A little advice...keep more than one ROM on your SD card just in case.

As a few others said, you don't have to wipe switching between nightly builds. To flash the next version of BB, just clear cache & dalvik.

[Q] Kan kernels be flashed and keep all my data?

Yes I have searched, and yes I understand that my firmware version must match the kernel I'm trying to flash, but my question is unique, I have yet to find an answer.
Basically I want to flash a kernel that is kompatible with my current rooted stock ROM, so I kan keep all my data, but utilize some of the CPU tweaking governors and I/O kontrollers that other kernels use.
If the kernel says TouchWiz, does that make it kompatible with my stock ROM?
I don't need any new features or a kolor make over from flashing a new ROM, but I would like better battery life and maybe more kontrol over my CPU speed and voltage.
Also, is GB REALLY the way to go for battery life? How would I go about keeping all my kurrent data, but moving to a GB ROM or kernel?
Thank you for your tyme in this matter.

TouchWiz kernels, will work with with stock as far as i know. check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1284 for info on different types of kernels. Some of the installs allow you to keep data as well. And from what i hear GB is the way to go on this phone, best battery life and best overall user experience on this phone. Ive never ran GB on it, but have come across alot of threads where people are praising GB over ICS and JB for this phone.

If I'm kurrently on STOCK ROM, with AGAT recovery, is it possible to just flash over to a GB Kernel or ROM? and keep data? I'm really just looking for a solution to keep all my apps+data and have either a Kernel or ROM that improves battery life. (I enjoy klipping my Otter Box Defender and walking around with Pandora playing.)
I've also read about backing up apps with Titanium or a similar program, flashing to a new ROM, then restoring the apps+data, is that something that would work in this situation? Again, I apologize if this question has been asked and answered before, but I feel like my situation is unique in the sense of keeping my data, and not really needing the extra bells and whistles of a new ROM.

Just because a kernel says TouchWiz it does not mean it is compatible with any TouchWiz rom. The kernel should be one that is made for the specific Android version of the rom.
There are aosp Jelly Bean roms now that have battery life that is comparable to GB. Baked Blackbean by sniper, Magical Unicorn by ktempleton, and Wild For The Night by dastin 1015 are excellent roms. Also MotoBlur'd Jelly Bean by bilgerryan which is based on Wild For The Night is excellent.
I have tried the stock JB roms and always come back to the aosp roms. They are so much smoother.
Do not try do use a GB kernel on an ICS or JB rom.
I always use Titanium Backup to restore apps and app data after doing a clean rom installation. Do not restore system data with Titanium Backup, only app data.
Just follow the installation instructions for the rom you want to install and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Well, I'll look around at some JB AOSP ROMs but might try a GB rom to see the difference. Another quick question, will my Titanium App Backups work when moving from ICS to GB?
Yes. Except apps that don't support gb. Like chrome.
sent from MY BAD A$$ ET4G
KingUniverse the only way to safely keep data/app data between kernel flashes is when staying within the same type of kernel, ex.ics to ics JB to JB, when you go cross build like ics to JB or JB to Gb your data will make a mess of your phone. App data can be forgiving at times but sometimes it can create all kinds of issues.
Best example is the one clicks, they always caution about using "no data" (keeps your data) only if coming from same build type (Ics to Ics JB to JB) so you dont bork.
