I'm trying to root my HTC Desire but falling at one of the first hurdles: I'm not able to install the driver software, I see the following error:

I'm running Windows 8 64-bit, and I'm trying to follow the steps to root as described here: androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/300866-guide-rooting-htc-android-2-2-1-lower-unrevoked-windows-updated-20th-december-2012-a.html
I've installed HTC Sync and uninstalled HTC manager, and uninstalled Dropbox. I can connect to the Desire via USB both in HBOOT (with a successful USB connection message) and in regular Android OS.
I experimented with a couple other drivers - "Universal_Naked_Driver_0.72.zip" and "Acer_A1.win8.usb_drivers.x86_x64.rar" I found mentioned elsewhere.
Are there other drivers available? Any other advice for me to root this for the first time?
I have posted sometime earlier workaround to get it working on Win8, search.

That's not right. Because your screenshot shows an Android 1.0 Device and this means the Desire isn't connected correctly.
Uninstall ALL about HTC and Desire. start the device manager and there activate in the options show disabled Device. Than you look in EVERY directory for Android, Desire, HTC. And remove the Drivers. right klick, remove and than yes and make sure if there is a option that says complete delet the driver say yes.
For Fastboot drivers:
Start Desire in Fastboot, and than you connect to the PC. Normaly Win 8 searches for Drivers. Than it says nothing found. Try in the Device Manager right Klick on Android 1.0 - If there is something about HTC Bootloader with an ! than you have an diferent problem - and research for drivers -> Internet. Than it normaly should work. If not download these drivers directly from unrevoke.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install directly from unrevoked.
and go to device manager, install drivers from PC. Also here make sure the unknown device is an Android 1.0 if the name is different pls tell us.
For Normal use:
after Fastboot works, you download the newest HTC Sync for Desire: http://www.htc.com/de/support/news.aspx?p_id=312&p_name=htc-desire
Ok run the installation BUT After you startet setup it says something like there are a few things missing befor installing. These are HTC Driver, something about Adobe, install these. After that the installer ask for some agreements for HTC Sync now you cancle the install, because all you need are the drivers and they are now installed. It should work now.
If there are some more problems let me know. I had some trouble with the ADB and fastboot drivers a week ago, too but now it works
Hi....i'm looking for USB driver for HTC Desire S....i've already installed latest version of HTC Sync but my PC still recogized the phone and showing unknown device in Device Manager...i already tried HTC drivers,JRE and android SDK...plz help me asap...thanks :fingers-crossed:
Hey Guys,
I just installed the new HTC One X software update, currently:
Android Version: 4.1.1
HTC Sense Version: 4+
Software Number: 4.63
HTC SDK API level: 4.63
And before when I connected my phone to the computer via a USB, I could choose from "Charge via USB" or "Use phone as a hard disk" - when I chose use phone as a hard disk I was able to access all the phones files.
However, after updating I seem to have lost the option to choose the connection type, and thus have no idea how to view the phone files - any ideas?
Thanks
UMS is no longer there... Your phone will be connected as a media device from now on...
Make sure you have the updated drivers installed on your pc! I would recommend Downloading/installing the latest HTC Sync Manager...

Hi Mate,
I thought this too but on my PC the auto open pops up, saying Sync manager (HTC).
If I close that, goto my Computer I can see my HTC One X
Double click it a voila, all files viewable as they used to be. However I did have Sync Manager installed already so it may be worth installing it to see,
I m installed htc sync and htc usb driver but why mtp device error computer gives error
Hi everyone,
I'm new and searching for help to connect my new HTC one M8 to my PC(OS Windows 10, installed not updated) via USB.
After installing the HTC Sync Manager with its drivers windows won't recognize my device but after updating the driver the error becomes:
Windows found driver software for your device bbut encountered an error while attempting to install it
HTC MTP Device
An error eccurred during the installation of the device:
The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later.
I have tried all of the solution over the internet:
-reinstall htc sync (after uninstalling all the drivers, obviously)
-copy usbstor.inf and .pnf file from a pc that recognizes my phone
A thing I observed was that when I enabled the USB debugging mode HTC Sync runs, so the phone is recognized, but the driver can not be installed.
I have tried the phone connection to another PCs and OSs: another Windows 10 and Ubuntu and it works, the problem is my os...
