Interesting Article about Google Wallet and root... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

http://pocketnow.com/android/google-wallet-good-news-and-bad-news
I don't normally root phones. I have only rooted the G2, but its still an interesting read.

This is crazy so I can't root my galaxy nexus if I want to use Google Wallet ? I use to have the NS4G never had a problem with wallet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

The article does not say you cannot root if you want to use Google Wallet. It says you are unsupported. No rooted phone is ever supported.

That's what they want you to believe. You actually can still use it, but you have an annoying "Unsupported Device" banner. Yes, I'm rooted and I used my nexus to buy a big mac at mcdonalds. Thanks for the fatty meal google... you bastards

I mean you can use it but after a while you get a msg saying "Secure element not responding" the only way to fix this is by getting your phone replace.

LOL..plenty of stock phones with that same message. Root has nothing to do with it.

That's strange I never have a issue with wallet im a citi bank user so I use it a lot

Was this article written when that first came around about the root issue, and just posted this month.
I got breaking need for pocket now i just used it twice today all while being rooted

Even for when the article was written, I feel that there was a higher understanding of how to work around root and wallet. At least that is what I have experienced on my vzw gbex (running 3 different families of roms in the course of using Google wallet)
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

the article is a little fuzzy on how the "secure element" problem occurs- the consensus is that if you do not clear the app (de-initialize) before flashing a new ROM you can run into problems. Obviously you need to root to flash a new rom but I am not aware of any reports of this problem occurring by simply rooting your phone (you will get the banner about unsupported device)- the problems seem to happen with flashing new roms if you do not clear the wallet beforehand

I don't think that the article is implying that you shouldn't root your galaxy nexus. Just to be careful when you do.

I read it more as a warning if you flash a new ROM you gotta de-initialize Google Wallet if you already use it. Which is good to know, because I do have Google Wallet up and running on my rooted stock Nexus, eventually I will go custom ROM, so I'll have to make sure to a) figure out how to de-initialize the app and b) just in case, use up any Google Wallet prepaid credit because it can be gone forever if things don't go just right when I switch ROMs.

I've flashed plenty of ROMs and never cleared Wallet data beforehand and I've never had the SE error, either on my Gnex or NS4G.

I found that article a few days ago and started searching here if it were true, only to find that some people were totally unaffected by rooting and flashing ROMs. I don't want to potentially lose the Google Wallet feature on my phone so I am kinda scared of rooting and flashing because of this article and others experiences.
I am mixed on this and not sure if I am going to root my phone now. I have always flashed my phones since the HD2. At the same point though, one of the reasons I had to flash was not having a Nexus device. I am so conflicted on this one.

I personally have had no issues with Wallet. I rooted first and installed AOKP, then installed and activated Wallet on my device. Been going strong for about a month with several purchases on the prepaid card.
I don't think anyone but Google really knows why it breaks. I haven't tried any other ROMs ever since having heard about these issues, but at least I can prove Wallet works fine even when rooted and on a different ROM.

This is a poor article. The author claims to be a power user who installed Google Wallet prior to it being supported on his device. If this were the case, he would know how to avoid secure element issues as it's been well documented for five months now.
His persistence on asking for a fix is also quite funny. He's messed up his phone. The secure element has physically destroyed itself (according to Google). That's why it's the secure element. There's no fix other than replacing the NFC chip and secure element.
Here's the meat of it: If you want Google Wallet and like flashing your phone, read the bloody guideliness in the threads on XDA before rushing in. You've rooted your phone, so you've willingly relinquished any form of support from Google. Don't complain if you mess up.

For someone who's new to androids, can you point me to the articles about rooting and google wallet? I'm going to receive my device shortly and don't want to mess this up.

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't mention anything about how to root and not brick the secure element. Am I missing something?

[Q] Question Purpose of Root/Unlock

This is my 3rd Nexus and this time, I'm going to try to keep this as close to Google's vision as possible. So if I'm not going to use a custom ROM, do you see any other reason to bother unlocking the phone and rooting it?

If you dont want to alter the stock rom in any way or flash custom roms or kernels then there is no need to unlock the bootloader.
If you dont want to perform any actions that need root permission i.e. adfree to block popup ads in apps, permissions to disable certain apps permissions, setcpu to adjust profiles or titaniumbackup to make backups of your installed apps and settings then you really dont need to root your phone.
If you want to do any of those things then yes its worth it. Unlocking the bootloader and rooting your phone wont harm anything and wont affect your stock rom but they WILL give you more options in the future if you change your mind. If you get all your phone set up and then decide you want to unlock the bootloader then the process will wipe your phone and you will lose everything you have installed so its better to do it now than later
Mark.
Firstly, how in hell did you manage to already get through two Gnex's? Secondly, yes, unlocking the boot loader and rooting is still useful even if you don't want to put a custom ROM on it. You can use root tools and uninstall system apps, change the dpi, install new kernels and over clock/underclock etc etc
If you unlock the bootloader you can always manually download OTA updates from Google's server and apply them yourself instead of waiting for the update to arrive.
Sorry, I meant this is my 3rd Nexus phone. Nexus One, Nexus S, and now Galaxy Nexus.
Thank you for your replies. I think I'll just unlock it...because, why not?

The CarrierIQ thing is supposedly something that carriers put on themselves, not Google. If that's the case, the Nexus line of phones in the past wasn't attributed to any carriers. Looks like Verizon might actually be branding theirs, since rumors are their name will now be on the backplate.
And of course, since we're in a developer forum, it's only appropriate to echo Cyanogen and his saying that they never have and never will include the CarrierIQ statistics on their ROMs.

but I don't know if it's true. I have just found out what carrierIQ is.
I'm not going against anyone from this forum, as i could be wrong, but i still dont believe all the BS that the companies says about not having the ciq in it's phone, also this links do say nexus phone, but does not state which one, and to my recall, the latest version galaxy nexus, the rom although vanilla google, the rom has been developed with samsung, google did not 100% made the rom, and the latest update through OTA was produced by samsung.
but you can correct me if you do think i'm wrong, as many member in this forum do have many years experiences in programming and development of roms.
I don't believe that any of the "true" Nexus devices have had this on it...otherwise myself and many others likely would have found it much earlier and we would not be wondering this now. With that being said I wouldn't count out the Nexus S(Sprint version) and the Galaxy Nexus(Verizon version) from the list of carrier IQ devices. Only time will tell as I'm not planning on ever owning either of those devices.
Justin
There was a Statement issued by Verizon That none of their phones Used Carrier IQ.. Something We Don't need to worry about on the SGN... Anyways Google handles Updates...
There's no debate: CIQ is NOT on this or any Nexus phone. AOSP is open source. It would be plainly obvious in the source code.

[FIX] (possible) Wallet payment error 4.0.3

I'm not sure if this is in the right section, I apologize if it isn't.
The Problem
So I have my galaxy nexus on CM9 builds, and I was getting that read error (different than the secure element error) where everything would work right up until it said error after sending payment and the cashier looks at you funny.
The Crap I Went Through
So I had a lot of fun tonight speaking with both google's support, money network, and whatever that 3rd company is that does the wallet service itself. Long story short, if you utter anything other than "nexus S 4G", they will latch onto it and tell you they can't help you. After being given several excuses ("doesn't have the technology", "unsupported", "only sprint network", "There's a special imaginary program that doesn't let you", etc), a guy from the wallet department let slip this bit and it WORKED.
THE (possible) FIX
He said that your account really gets set-up after you add funds and subsequently give it your information. I imagine it's not the way it's intended since google gives you $10 up front, but we're not installing the app the way it's intended either. None-the-less I added the smallest amount possible ($20), did the whole setup for transferring funds, went out and tested it, and bam. I haven't tested this on another galaxy nexus, but if you're willing to pony up the $20 and do it, maybe it'll work. Unfortunately you have to be lucky to just call and give them your info instead of paying the $20, because like I said they'll jump at the first chance to dump you. You can try saying you have a Nexus S, but they wizened up and asked me for some unique number in the "About Phone" section.
Code:
Phone info:
Galaxy Nexus LTE
JDKernel 1.1.2
CM9 Kang 1/2/12
Restored Wallet from a Titanium Backup from my AOKP ROM. Tested on both ROM's now and works
I can't guarantee anything, it's just what worked for me. Good luck!
Cool trick.
However, a cheaper option would have been to just go to a ROM that has it working by default. Lol.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I've noticed both times I flashed a ROM and restored wallet from backup, it did the thing where you go to pay, and it just endlessly loops saying "payment sent" and making the notification noise, but nothing sends and the cashier just looks at you funny.
Both times clearing data in setting and relogging in has "fixed" the problem for me.
I never had a problem with CM9 builds. Erase your GW via titanium backup then download the GW that was posted on Droid life.
I have CM9 and all my transactions are flawless!
As I was setting up the app, I went ahead and added $20 just for "****s and giggles" and tested it at Meijer. Worked like a charm. I bought a 5th of Brandy.

I had an issue after restoring a CWM nanroid backup, where it would just keep trying to scan with the NFC chip at the vending machine.
All I did was uninstall and re-install the apk and it works again. I still have my prepaid card tied to my google account (with the same balance left), and i've used it twice today with no issues.
is this the problem OP was facing?

This is pretty funny! You called Google to ask why Wallet which is not supported on your phone does not work on your phone. Would be like me calling Google complaining of Windows BSODs.
Bounced off a cell tower near you by ICS and my Galaxy Nexus. Zoom Zoom
The issue is on my wallet account side of things, not the hardware.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
This is interesting and possibly true based on my own experience with Wallet. I installed the apk and attempted to use the $10 at two places. The first was a local CVS where I couldn't get their terminal to recognize Wallet at all. The second was a McDonald's where it kept prompting me for my PIN but would never complete the transaction. I chalked both of those missteps to OE (operator error).
A few days later I decided to try again (this time a Jack-in-the-Box) and knowing that I'd spend more than $10, I went ahead and added $20 to Wallet beforehand. When I used Wallet to pay at the drive-thru, it worked flawlessly as it did again a few days later at the same McDonald's (and same terminal!) I had been to before.
So maybe your theory is correct?
I flash roms all the time. I would get that error all the time if I didn't reset Google wallet after I flashed a new rom When you open up Google wallet and get to the screen after you input your pin go to setting menu reset google wallet. This should correct the error you are getting with adding money to your wallet.

Google Wallet issue...(not unsecure element)

I recently decided to unlock/root my LTE GN. I went through and used the adb backup method to backup all my apps and relevant data (use mybackup pro for SMS/MMS and such). I then unlocked and rooted my device. Everything went well, including restoring everything. Everything is actually working quite well and I have had 0 problems....except Google Wallet. I had Google Wallet working just fine when I was locked/not-rooted, even used it at McDonald's and CVS. Well, last night I decided I wanted a soda and the wife wanted a coffee, so we stopped, I opened up Google Wallet ahead of time and used my PIN code to unlock it. After hearing the total, I then did what I was supposed to do, put my phone up to the panel, and it started doing what it was supposed to do. It even said 'Sent', but then something came up to the effect that "If the transaction didn't go through, try again". I can't remember the exact wording, but it was something similar to that. Basically, I didn't get the unsecure element issue, or anything like that. It seemed like the transaction went through, but even the cashier said nothing went through. Either way, anyone else encounter this issue?
i had the same issue. try this: reset gw from within the app, then uninstall it. reinstall the apk again and add back your card. worked for me.
I wouldn't restore any backup of google wallet. Let google sync services take care of backing up that app. Restoring data might have been the cause of it.

I got it to work, I just tested it at the gas station.
This is what I did:
1- reset Google wallet withing the app
2- unistall google wallet
3- remove the applets:
Code:
adb shell
am broadcast -a android.intent.action.MASTER_CLEAR_NOTIFICATION
4- reboot phone
5- install google wallet
Good luck.

Work every time for me
Sorry to necro, but I was going to make my own thread and this one popped up and was my exact issue.
A little background info: I bought my Gnex last week after wanting one for a while, and having borked up my Razr (which sucks for customization anyway!). I rooted it in my car with my netbook and the Gnex Tool as soon as I got it.
I promptly put $20 into Google Wallet soon after, making the total balance $30 since I got the free $10 with it, which turned out to be a big mistake since I'm broke and can't access the damn money on it! I get the exact same error the guy in the OP got, which is SO frustrating!
At first I thought that it was just the crappy gas station in my crappy little town not working correctly, until I went to a bigger crappy town and it didn't work there either! (both gas stations of different brands) Hopefully I can get the trick mentioned in this thread to work since it's going to be a rough couple of weeks until I get more money if it doesn't!
I've read the Google Wallet thread on here, and there's conflicting reports about rooted phones running it. I wish that there was something like Safestrap for Razr for the Gnex so I could just flip back and forth from my rooted rom to stock to use Google Wallet and not have to deal with these issues!

Yeah I've been wondering if any other Verizon users have even gotten successful transactions. I'm on the stock rooted 4.0.4 leak with the official version of Google Wallet from the market. I've gone to Rite Aid a couple of times and have had the same result. The second time the clerk said that it was about to go through, but we never got past that point.
Anyone else?
mine have always been successful except when the gas station didnt have it setup properly. and yes i have the verizon version and have been on several roms.
I haven't had but one problem with gw and it was weird because I did what was supposed to be done and nothing happened pulled my card out paid was about to be out the door when all the sudden it popped up asking for my pin of course I already paid so I just exit out but that happened one time and has worked ever since even last night with no issues and I have gone through tons of wipes and ROM changes only thing I do is reset google wallet before a flash and don't set it back up until after the new ROM flash.. I do have the unsupported device message but regardless it still works every time. As long as the places pay pass is working.

its the nfc station ladys and gents. please go to places such as CVS, Duane Reade, PetCo or other places and do it at a cashier station. or if you are too shy to look like a fool, go to a self checkout and test it FIRST by running it across the reader, if it picks up and asks for the pin then you are good to go

Why did I get another Android phone?

I was so excited to get a different phone. I had been contending with the insufferable Galaxy Note 2 for 9 months. I really believed that getting the LG Optimus G Pro would be great.
Now I come to find out that there is this locked bootloader? yes before you even start typing: I already know about Freegee. I put it on my phone, it did its work. I have CWM on my phone. I cannot install a different rom. It aborts every time.
And nobody here can help. Its not like you don't see my posts. You see them. You just see them and decide to go on to something more interesting figuring that someone else will help the poor guy.
Hey guess what. I took programming in college. Only one course in VB but I did take it. And I've put up several websites back in the day. ("back in the day is a United States colloquialism")
My point is, even though I have a bit of experience with computers (linux distros, html, visual basic) I still can't figure out the quagmire that is Android.
Once the iPhone 6 comes out, I really have no reason to stick with Android anymore. I mean, if rooting and rom-ing the phone is more boringly laborious than jailbreaking, then what is the point of Android?
For example, lets say I do clear the hurdle and then flash a rom so I can get decent sound? THEN my wifi won't work. Or Some other crucial functionality will be fubar-ed. Okay okay... you say you have a fix for that? Well when its all said and done, the time/energy costs just aren't worth it, now is it?
0 #!*! Given ?
That's interesting because I never took any classes and have never had a problem rooting or doing Roms on any android phone. Sorry your experience has been bad but my questions have always been answered by somebody in the related thread. I would try asking again in the ROM's thread to see what is happening.

I don't even remember how I rooted this phone... I know I found a thread that had comprehensive instructions, links, etc and believe it was as simple as downloading/extracting an executable file on my PC and plugging the phone into USB at the right moment. I've flashed CM, stock 4.4, Slim and always find my way back to stock 4.1.2, modded to my liking. If you can't flash something in a custom recovery, it's likely your phone is protecting you from failure to completely read/follow a prior mod or a prerequisite to the ROM/Mod you wish to flash.

I too just got new lg ogp phone. Been trying to customize it to my liking for the past 3 days and night. All I can say about android is it is not for everybody. Sure, you can use it as it is when you first get it as a stock device, and it will work as advertise. But there is a reason that you try modifing it regardless of breaking the manufacturer's warranty (yes, once you start rooting it, you violate the agreement.) You have personality of the kind that thinks you can fix anything by yourself. Nothing wrong with that, I'm in same personality group too, many Android owners are. After all, what is the point if you can't modify the phone to your liking? Might as well get an Iphone right? Sadly though, it seems the new android trend is just heading the way of iphone, where users have to be protected from harming themselves. I noticed all the difficulties when I tried to root this LG phone, as compared to the phone I had two years ago. But android users are a persistent lot, more securities mean inventing more ways to break them. If you have problem installing ROM, try cm11 nightly build, it works for me. Post the specific problems and situations. We should be able to help each other. After all, android owners are together in a special community where we can relate to each other because of ideas we have for our phones. My advice to you is make sure you have the newest recovery and you are properly rooted. I can't use the script method where you run a msdos batch file. Since atnt suppose locked the boot.img file or something. Had to use a program called root master.

Exactly.
If android is going to be locked down, what is the point? With iPhone bringing in 3rd party keyboards and phablet size phones, might as well go with them instead of utilitarian design devices made by dictator led countries where creativity is frowned upon.

But Apple has been implicated in planned obsolescence as well.
Does that matter to you?
To me, it makes me a bit upset that I could work on my vehicle twenty years ago, but now it's not possible. Planned obsolescence.
Make everything sweepstakes m disposable. Lock it down too. Keep every one buying the upgrades.

Are you still having problem installing the ROM? You have never tell us what kind of problems you ran into specifically. You just ventted your frustration here, nobody wants to hear that. If you want people to help, describe the issue. Go to this site and download the program vroot.
http://www.mobilepoint.us/2013/10/android-root-master-one-click-vroot.html#.U9XRXYfwJGo
The program is in Chinese, so you may want to watch youtube videos on the master root program first. Do a factory reset, clean wipe, run master root program, and hopefully you should be able to install the recovery. Once the recovery is properly installed, you can install the custom rom. Since there aren't many, I suggest you try cyanogenmod.

I got a ROM to install. I indicated so in the thread. It was the E988 rom on the E980 thread.
I do a lot of whining and complaining but its for the best.
I hope that the complaining I did about Samsung's crappy products has saved a few people from buying...that is the only way that company will learn their lesson. Why pay $800 for a device only to get screen burn in.
But I never ever never ever BRICKED my Note 2.
I've bricked this OGP more times than I can count.
We should have the options to remove the locked boot loader. I would gladly sign an agreement acknowledging the risks.
We're going backwards. We're not making progress.
Same things is happening in desktop/laptop computers. I had to do something unusual to remove the UEFI on a Windows machine I bought last year just to install Lubuntu.
Speaking of Lubuntu, I had an ASUS Netbook with Windows 7 and an Atom processor. Needless to say, it ran slow. So I installed Lubuntu. Then , wow, the device ran so fast and smooth, and the already good battery life got three times better.
Why can't we have an option like that for our smartphones? I want to run the equivalent of Lubuntu on my OGP.
And another thing: Why are some custom roms dimming the display? Is it to make it appear as if the rom is giving better battery life?
Peace out bro.. but yeah, I'm not stopping my rants. If you don't like what I've got to say, simply don't read it.
This phone is not much more difficult to root than any Samsung phone I used. Also why didn't you do research before buying the phone? It was stated clearly that the boot loader was locked. However since day one of purchase I was able to follow a thread and have my phone rooted in ten minutes. It is really not that hard. Now there are a bunch of one click roots. This phone installs custom Roms every time with ease for me. I am no expert but I can read instructions. If you follow them, 99% of the time things will work. I love android for the fact that I have options. I am running a rooted stock ROM now but I love knowing that in ten minutes time I can have a new ROM flashed. This community has been so helpful and responsive.

T-Mobile stance on rooted phones?

Food for thought. As a part of the "T-Mobile My Account" app is a device health (beta) page that will scan the phone for various settings. If you tap on either the "Battery state" or "Device performance" and look for a box that says "Show all test" being rooted is among the list. When I read over the various warranties and agreements, I was looking specifically for anything about root, rooting, rooted, "" access. The best I found only mentions that issues caused by 3rd party software are not covered.
Seeing this makes me wonder if T-Mobile as part of its "un-carrier" move may be opening up to the idea.

This is why I don't understand people's hate towards Samsung's Knox when they trip it due to rooting and custom TOM's.

Cause on an HTC or nexus device you can completely go back to stock and have no evidence of rooting. With Knox, you're screwed. There's no resetting it. I don't know how LG works, this is my first LG device

Just out of curiosity, what is T-Mobile's stance? I'm very new to TMo. So new, I switched/ordered my phone on Tuesday and due to a "Systems Issue" I don't even believe my phone has been shipped yet.

Honestly, if you return to stock (completely) and then go in for warranty, you should be okay. The official stance is no, but I know that 99 times out of 100 you're not gonna have an issue. Unless it's blatantly obvious that you caused your issue by messing with your phone. If you ever need anything when dealing with Tmobile feel free to pm me on here. That goes for anyone who reads this.

Yup, and things like this happen where reps are completely oblivious. It's not uncommon.
I only said what I did because I know quite a few managers from the bay area to Sacramento, and a good portion of them are into rooting phones and train their staff (not cause they want to screw you over, just to make sure that they retain their job) to look for it.
So yeah, you'll probably be fine if you don't unroot your phone, but an extra 10 minutes of work won't hurt you.

I usually get my best results by going into the store and being a real jerk, swear at the counter people, call them names then tell them you rooted the phone and now there are some issues....
JK,,, dont do that.
If you are nice and act dumb they will help you.
Hmm, I don't even HAVE a store around here, I'd be dealing with whoever is at the other end of the shipping tag.

thats very nice of you to offer that:good:
I agree with your comments; I have rooted every phone I have had over the years with ATT/Sprint/TMO, and NEVER "restored to stock" ANY of the phones I turned in for upgrade/repair/etc, and never once had an issue with ANY carrier.
If you act like a jerk, and hassle the store personnel, you will always have a problem; if you are polite, professional, and dont try to blame someone else for your problem, 99% of the time, you wont have a problem turning in a rooted phone.
Treat people like YOU want to be treated, and you will always be taken care of; at least that's always been my experience..
I have always just unrooted before I went in. Some times I have watched them check the phone and worried if they would try to update it. That was the case with both my HTC Evo 4g and Samsung Galaxy S3 with Sprint. I was trying to avoid the hboot 1.5 and KNOX updates. Only issue I had was when my mms stopped working. Even unrooted the stock messenger wouldn't send them. I was asked if it was rooted and was hoping the unroot file worked. Ever time the phones have finished as I was parking in the lot so I never really had a chance to make sure it was all back to stock.
When I picked up the G3 and changed to T-Mobile I asked and was told unroot it. If no one knows it was rooted then you're good.

yeah, its so easy to unroot a phone, and if they do a quick check to see if its rooted, and they dont see that it is, they never go any further..

I have had to over the years exchange a few phones with t-mobile, been with them going on 8 years with 5 lines. I always unroot and set back to stock with that said tho, I had to exchange a note 3 for non working GPS and although I did set it back to stock I obviously couldn't reset the knox counter. So far, haven't heard anything about it and that was almost a month ago. While I have no official comment, I do believe t-mobile doesn't care so long as the issue is not related to anything you have done.
I want the g3, but am waiting for root. Just don't care for phones I can't restore to, uninstall unneeded apps etc.
i went on store at LG G3 launch and i showed my note 3 to swap with G3. via JUMP
my phone is rooted, i even teased the girl representative that i have the coolest ROM on it lol. she just smiled and check the note 3 physically. i even let her do a factory reset on the note 3. few mins later i have the black G3 on my possession
I'm not sure what the big deal is. If we can flash a stock ROM onto a phone I'm sure they can, probably easier than we can. It's the hardware condition that really matters.

This is called The Golden Rule and XDA and the world in general would be a better place if it was practiced at every opportunity. ?
