The hardware is the same as the desire, apart from the larger display (which is LCD not AMOLED). I have come from the HD2 to the Desire and use it for work as well as play. The HD2 was just too big for everyday use. The desire works fine for work applications - using Touchdown for corporate mail sync etc etc. I use Copilot for navigation, but there are other soutions including google.

If you're not already sold on Android just being "better" than WinMo, go with the HD2. In a corporate environment, WinMo is probably just about a better choice than Android, but only barely and the gap can generally be covered by 3rd party applications. WinMo also has better support for multimedia (DivX etc), but again the gap is narrowing. In practically all other respects Android is a superior OS IMHO.

for portugal not :S.....we pay alot for internet connection :S...I need a trust map like tomtom and ndrive...
I've already tried garmin and don't like it :S, just to much lag :S...and don't have my street loool
the camera is better then hd2 yes? In read the wm don't use very well the camera :S
Another thing I like to do a video call =/...on the desire it's not possible oO
hd2 can?
ps: thaks fot repply
NDrive is available for Android, but my preferred choice is Copilot because it works very well and is extremely well priced (and has offline maps).
Neither the Desire nor the HD2 have front facing cameras, so video calls are not possible.

Dave
To be honest, I've been using touch diamond 2, and windows mobile for me is a little disappointing! Seriously.
Get the desire! It changed my life.

I'm coming from a WinMo 6.5.3 HTC Touch HD (HD1) and while I can't comment on the hardware of the HD2, I do miss a bit the larger screen, but otherwise I guess the Desire is better.
For the OS and software: android is sure more modern and oriented towards capacitive touchscreens, has better generic applications and games, but if I had to choose it purely for work I don't know what I would choose.
I sure as hell miss a solid email client and no aftermarket client on android comes close to Pocket Outlook integration, exchange, etc. That said, this is normal, since the desire pertains more to the consumer-oriented market, while winmo comes from the professional-oriented field. Besides if you only need it for work/emails/phone you could probably go with BB.
=/...man :S.....I don't know....
iphone 4g ??? looool much pay app =/...

Coming myself from WinMo (which did the job), I'm must say I'm not at all disappointed with Android.
I only use it professionnally and I don't see what is your problem with it! Explain a wee bit!
I will try another roms and try this phone one more days...testing testing testing
my probleme is.....thats like a children phone
but its my thinking just for now
The major thing that makes me miss my Touch Hd is the lack of the stylus and absence of Transcriber and Handwriting recognition. For professional use, sometimes I need to write longer emails and the stylus plus handwriting recognition was great for that. However, the desire is much faster. I think HD 2 is very fast too. If it has a stylus and writing recognition amd you need it professionally I would recommend windows mobile

bah...I don't like it at all......I want to sell it =/
I already put my sell in the markplace...350€ for I can buy one hd2
I've got an HD2 and it's been sat in its box for 7 months as the Desire is SO much better. WinMo is ancient now compared to Android and the only thing going for it is the screen. Even with my own ROM on it it's not as good as the Desire out the box!
I wouldn't go back to WinMo now unless WP7S is something special - which I doubt!!
Who would trade Android for Winmo !!!????
Winmo is just GARBISH ! after two HTC phone with WM , i should say that i hate it !
Android is So MUCH BETTER !
if u want to go to Win-mo so badly , and call a USER FRIENDLY INTERFACE => " CHILD PHONE " then go for it !
dunno why some people must have a hard time using their phones to feel Professionals ! so why not using MS-DOS instead of windows and feel a lot more Professional !
with a little search u would find that the most HATED MOBILE OS IS INDEED : WINDOWS MOBILE !
PS : as a suggestion w8 at least for Winmo7 !
The fact that MY HD2 is still sat on my desk is evidence enough that I'm not 100% convinced the Desire is the better option. I've stuck with the Desire for 3 weeks now getting to know it and flashing a few roms. I can cetainly see the appeal. I like the marktplace and I LOVE Rom Manager (100% the best feature for me) Browsing is nice, in fact MOST things are nice. I do feel Sat Nav is in a league of it's own on WinMob and I much prefer the bigger screen. The relative bulk of the phone doesn't put me off, I like it big in my hand (oo-er). If The Evo was out in the UK I would probably sell both and get one of them and wait patiently for Sat nav to get better on Android.
I've had a Desire for a couple of weeks now and the HD2 for much longer.
When I got the Desire my plan was to switch phones every couple of days while deciding which I preferred. It hasn't quite worked out that way, I use the HD2 for a week or so and the Desire for a day or two.
I haven't rooted the Desire, I have stock ROMs on both phones. Nervous I'll brick it I suppose and on the HD2 there are so many cabs available on XDA to change the appearance of icons, sliders, clockfaces etc that I haven't felt any real need to flash a new ROM
Desire - better interface, touch screen much more responsive, better selection of apps
HD2 - much more tweakable, much better screen size. With Cookie's home tab and the various cabs I have installed I feel my HD2 is unique. Still new to Desire, perhap I can get the same level of customisation if I root it first?
When it comes to apps I don't really have that many on either phone so the Desire's app range isn't that big an influence. The ones I use the most are file manager, registry editor, ebook reader, satnav, media player, mail and messaging. I've got Swype on both but on the HD2 it doesn't seem to be quite as accurate as on the Desire, but that'll be the HD2 screen.
On the apps front the HD2 really wins out in that I can run Secubox - this is an app I use every day (its like Truecrypt for Winmo), and there doesn't seem to be an equivalent on Android.
For Satnav I have TomTom on HD2 and am still just using Google maps on Desire. I may try Copilot though.
Anyway, I'm still undecided. I use the HD2 most often but when I do use the Desire I can't stop picking it up and playing with it ...... even if I prefer the HD2 in the end, there's nothing like an evening spent stroking my Desire
Oh and I almost forgot - being able to run the HD2 as a wireless router has come in handy a couple of times, don't seem to be able to do that with the Desire
Tricky title?
I don't know if this is the correct subforum... if not, mods please transfer.
Anyway... As many of you probably did, I have had many phones. The thing is that with my previous devices, the desire for them got lost in like a week after I purchased the device. But with the HTC Desire, I have kinda different feeling. I mean, I purchased my Desire like a month now, and I am not a bit bored by it. It still looks fun to me, and I still find interesting things to do with it. So, what is your opinions about this? How long did you enjoyed your new "shiny" device, and for how long you have been (are) enjoying the Desire?
I know for me the fact I can mould the phone how I want has played a huge part in keeping me interested. I usually upgrade to nokia E class phone, the E71 was my last phone, but coming from a linux fanboy the Desire feels like -my- phone just like my laptop is moulded exactly how I want it.
The fact its the first phone I've owned that has yet to struggle with anything I throw at it helps a huge amount too

Longer then the HTC HD2, BlackBerry Bold
This device is amazing indeed. I still have moments that I look at it and think... wow And soon Froyo will come, which will give you another few weeks of 'new enjoyment'. Also I still hope that the Android Market is going to start filling with great quality apps soon :0) Angry Birds this summer is a must have game.
And in Q4, Android 3 may be released and we can start enjoying that. (probably not from HTC, but from XDA) There is lots going on in the Android World!

I'm pretty much bored with it as I get with any phone once you do all with it you wanted. It becomes just another phone. The only difference with this one is that I'm hell angry on HTC for there build quality in general which covers everything from the poor UMTS reception to the stupid body design with button back light shining through micro holes under the screen.

Been happy with my HTC phones since I opened up a box of Magics and knew I was buying one by the end of the day. I've now had a Magic, a Hero and now my Desire and I always find something new to do or try out every week and that's without having rooted the phone. Before this I've had a S.E. W950 and after an E71 and while I've had my Hero I've had an iPhone and I've got to say that the iPhone has nothing on the overall features and abilities of even my Hero.

Guys, I've gotten the oppertunity to trade my current silver HTC Desire, which I trully love. For a brand new HTC Desire HD.
Should I go for it or not? No sneaky catch, it's just my mom needs a new phone, she doesn't care what phone. So I could get a Desire HD with this and she gets my 'old' Desire.
gotten the same oppertunity here, my dad needs a new phone!

I'm really interested in the Desire HD. But I also REALLLLLYYYY love my SILVER Desire.
My previous phone was a crappy HP iPAQ Data Messenger running WM6.1, so I didn't feel bad at all getting rid of that. But this is my Desire dude! MY DESIREE!

Why does rooting need to be the main reason to get a phone? Wouldn't be in my case
I've never modded my Desire in anyway. No root, no flash, no nothing. So that ain't the deal breaker.

Desire has 1.5gb internal storage, and a WiFi hotspot, so I tend to agree that rooting it probably isn't going to be as big an issue for many.
In addition, the extras you get from htcsense.com, means it's unlikely you would want to replace the Sense ROM with an AOSP ROM.

Lol, not that extreme neither. She wants a phone with which she can call, text and read her mail quickly.
She's not an avid internet browser or a crazy install all app-er. She just want to get access to her mail and sometimes chat via MSN.
Well don't think so much. Get HD, or if you do not want I'll give my for one HD
Well, the HD is for me just way too big. The Desire 's got the perfect size imo - only option for me were the Z (but I just replaced my HD2 with a Desire last week, so I won't switch too early - maybe in January).
Be careful, there are numerous reports about the Desire HD's display looking "washed out"... Some people says the display looks really low quality.
The Desire screen is a dream to look at so I wouldn't trade a gorgeous looking 3.7" screen for a slightly bigger one that has washed out colors. Of course the HD have many other advantages but the display is very important to me at least... It was just a warning, just do a google search if you don't believe me...
Try it at least your mum will have the desire. If you don't like the HD try and get her to trade for the HD and you get your desire back.

I got sick of the size of my HD2, you can't get into a car without having to remove it from your pocket, it's bulky, they are pretty much one drop wonders as well with a screen that big. The battery life is pathetic and of course, with the Desire HD the battery will drain faster as it's only 1230 mAh quite a bit smaller than the Desires 1400 mAh battery. Coming from a HD2 to a Desire, you really notice that extra juice.
I am so happy with my Desire at the moment I wouldn't swap it for another phone.

Here is a good one...Market enabler, like in my case , if you live in a country where google does not support paid apps to yet..Otherwise you essensially get a crippled 2k app phone (most of which are wallpaper apps, ringtones and clocks or batt widgets)
I wouldnt trade.....the battery from that device sucks even harder.
just a teeny question, doesn't TFT screens suck less juice than AMOLEDs?
that's probably why HTC is using a smaller battery on the HD

it really depends..the new slcd type is tested and has about same and when displaying white content even better battery life..i am not aware what type of screen the desire hd uses though..
so I pretty much decided I'm getting the HTC Desire over the Nexus one, but now with the Desire HD's release about 1 month away I'm debating whether or not to wait.
To be honest I'm in love with the HD's huge screen and looks, but looks alone don't cut it for me. I plan to jump on board the modding/rooting community as soon as I can (just starting out atm) and the Desire is the better choice when it comes to that since its been rooted and messed around with already.
I just worry that I will have to wait a very long time for the Desire HD to be rooted successfully, or it will turnout to be hard to hack and play with like the Nexus one and Desire as I want to try my hand at some hacking myself.
what do you think I should do?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: ok thanks everyone for the replies, I've pretty much decided to go with the Desire. I need a phone I can play around with right away so the Desire would be the better choice. If I were you I'd take the HD, but after hTC's stunt with the T-Mobile G2, I'm not so sure at all. If you really want to customise your phone properly, then your best bet would be the Desire.
I'm after the HD now, as i'm a phone whore. So if you want a Desire £230 if you fancy it, unbranded, used but never damaged. Screen mint, phone mint. PM if your interested.

definetly a Desire. A guy at work got one today and i was well jelous until i saw it in the flesh.
The screen is bigger but the resolution isnt much higher than the desire resulting in a big average screen.
Obviously the cloud features are a benifit but no doublt a custom rom will turn up with them on sooner or later.

Hey, what do you mean by Free of Market Restrictions? (sorry for going offtopic)
I have a Desire and wanted a Desire HD. Until I noticed, it's not the hardware I want. It's the software.
I think the design of the Desire is better.
I also like the physical buttons more. (My mom got a Wildfire, I had using it cause I always accidently hit the capatative buttons).
I think the size is perfect. Sometimes I feel like I wouldn't mind if the Desire was bigger. At other times when using with 1 hand, I find it a bit big.
It's the nw HTC Sense that I noticed I REALLY want. And I'm gonna get that anyway. Officially or modded.

oh yeah, i heard that this feature was on the motorola Droid, had no idea HTC did that same thing to the G2. While the phone will most likely be sold here unbranded and unlocked, since I got Legend which was exclusively sold by vodaphone unbranded and unlocked, i think it will most likely be a built-in hardware feature regardless of whether or not its exclusive to a certain carrier. that seems to be the on going trend right now with HTC and other manufacturers.
___
at the moment the Desire seems to be the better choice for me, i was considering the HD version based purely on physical looks. after seeing the HD2 in person i loved the huge screen and i thought the Desire HD will be like a buffed up android version of the HD2. i know the Desire will eventually get the updated Sense UI so i have no worries regarding the software.
As for the camera, 5MP is good enough for me when i want to take pictures on the go, otherwise i bring along a real camera with me. I don't think phone cameras are good enough to replace an actual camera just yet.

I want to jump on the band wagon here cos im in the same boat, and this thread has thrown a spanner in the works!!
Ive currently got a rooted hero but lack the power from a 1ghz amongst other things....ive played in length with the Desire and genuinely love it, but its knocking on a bit now so am tempted to hold out for the Desire HD as the price is only £100 diff.
What are we saying about the new HD ? Is it likely to going to be a ball ache to do what the desire already does well.....dont get me wrong ill wait for the dev work to catch up but obviously if theres **** hard coded designed to prevent rooting is it gonna be worth it?
also im going unbranded this time....if that makes a difference (aside from the obvious lack of network restrictions!)
I'd suggest wait till the community has successfully rooted the HD, then decide
aww I was gonna go buy the Desire tomorrow, now I can't decide again haha
I can call HTC's distributor here and ask them when exactly the device will release here and how much it will be for. When i was comparing between the Nexus and Desire the price was almost the same but now there is obviously going to be a significant price difference.
I guess for me now it all comes down to the price and customization ability.
I've checked the Desire HD's forums and there seems to be a temporary root solution for it at the moment. Looks like they are still working on it.

Uh...what it originally was a sort of copy of, Flipboard?
I say this as a fierce HTC supporter, who has had an HTC phone since Windows Mobile days...but HTC is definitely losing the plot on this Blinkfeed change...
With this change, as much as I love Sense, I'm thinking of using the Google Now launcher for the first time. I just hope they change their minds in time for Marshmallow.
Are you listening, HTC? I've owned Nearly every major device you've released since The 6800 Mogul, about 9 devices in all, and yes, I even bought the M9 to support you. Leave Blinkfeed as it is!

I don't mind it so much. Articles seem to open just as quickly as they used to. Plus it may not have been solely HTC's choice, maybe News Republic pushed them? coz I'm pretty sure (but don't quote me on it) that Blinkfeed used News Republic as a source for its news aggregation in the first place, did it not? Just as the Touchwiz side bar thing whatever they call it, uses Flipboard aggregation, except with that, you actually have to have Flipboard installed for it to function correctly... Maybe News Republic wanted the same from HTC?
Also, personally, I've always preferred News Republic over Flipboard anyways. But, that's just my personal preference. See what you think of both apps, let us know.
To be honest I don't mind the news republic integration. On the home screen the usage isn't much different, and I don't really mind the news republic app. Shrug. I don't see what all the fuss is about.
I don't like having to wait twice as long for my desired news article to load due to needing a third party app to load as well, and the ads are quite a pain. We bought a $400+ phone to be bombarded with ads when we read news?

Agreed totally. The damn adds are just annoying, and as you say it takes longer to load. Also my xposed toolbox don't make blinkfeed immersive mode as epic since you are now plauged with a grey thin bar at the top which was previously completely transparent in blinkfeed.
What I wouldn't mind is: Remove all adds, make all adds and markings in text optional. I don't want anything to even look like you can click it, just text.
Integrate it into blinkfeed so no extra loadtime.
Make every boarder transparent optional.
But these greedy ppl obvously make a lot of money on the adds, and the consumers suffer because of it.
News republic is total GARBAGE and I will never buy an HTC phone again . I feel like I've been ripped off. I can't disable or delete this **** program .I even removed news republic and selected ONLY LINKED IN AND MY GOOGLE PLUS to show up in blinkfeed and guess what ? .I STILL GET NEWS ADS IN MY FEED WHEN CLICKED THEY SAY DOWNLOAD NEWS REPUBLIC TO VIEW . I don't have news republic selected for my highlights either but somehow it still shows up.This program is taking advantage of all of us . It makes me sick that I bought a phone and have no control over what's on it. NEVER AGAIN HTC ,YOUVE LOST MY TRUST FOREVER
