so I pretty much decided I'm getting the HTC Desire over the Nexus one, but now with the Desire HD's release about 1 month away I'm debating whether or not to wait.
To be honest I'm in love with the HD's huge screen and looks, but looks alone don't cut it for me. I plan to jump on board the modding/rooting community as soon as I can (just starting out atm) and the Desire is the better choice when it comes to that since its been rooted and messed around with already.
I just worry that I will have to wait a very long time for the Desire HD to be rooted successfully, or it will turnout to be hard to hack and play with like the Nexus one and Desire as I want to try my hand at some hacking myself.
what do you think I should do?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: ok thanks everyone for the replies, I've pretty much decided to go with the Desire. I need a phone I can play around with right away so the Desire would be the better choice. Maybe in the near future when I need a new phone android phones will be more out of the box hacker friendly (hints @ HTC)
If I were you I'd take the HD, but after hTC's stunt with the T-Mobile G2, I'm not so sure at all. If you really want to customise your phone properly, then your best bet would be the Desire.
I'm after the HD now, as i'm a phone whore. So if you want a Desire £230 if you fancy it, unbranded, used but never damaged. Screen mint, phone mint. PM if your interested.

what stunt? and i am leaning more towards the desire at the moment because its more customizable. i'll look around the Desire HD forum for more info, maybe that will help me decide.

Desire!
definetly a Desire. A guy at work got one today and i was well jelous until i saw it in the flesh.
The screen is bigger but the resolution isnt much higher than the desire resulting in a big average screen.
Obviously the cloud features are a benifit but no doublt a custom rom will turn up with them on sooner or later.
Aye. supposedly we're going to get the HD sense package for our desires in December too! w00t.

I think you should go for Desire. Spending more money just for HD features when your use is mainly for modding - ahhh... doesnt make sense to me

Hey, what do you mean by Free of Market Restrictions? (sorry for going offtopic)
I have a Desire and wanted a Desire HD. Until I noticed, it's not the hardware I want. It's the software.
I think the design of the Desire is better.
I also like the physical buttons more. (My mom got a Wildfire, I had using it cause I always accidently hit the capatative buttons).
I think the size is perfect. Sometimes I feel like I wouldn't mind if the Desire was bigger. At other times when using with 1 hand, I find it a bit big.
It's the nw HTC Sense that I noticed I REALLY want. And I'm gonna get that anyway. Officially or modded.

oh yeah, i heard that this feature was on the motorola Droid, had no idea HTC did that same thing to the G2. While the phone will most likely be sold here unbranded and unlocked, since I got Legend which was exclusively sold by vodaphone unbranded and unlocked, i think it will most likely be a built-in hardware feature regardless of whether or not its exclusive to a certain carrier. that seems to be the on going trend right now with HTC and other manufacturers.
___
at the moment the Desire seems to be the better choice for me, i was considering the HD version based purely on physical looks. after seeing the HD2 in person i loved the huge screen and i thought the Desire HD will be like a buffed up android version of the HD2. i know the Desire will eventually get the updated Sense UI so i have no worries regarding the software.
As for the camera, 5MP is good enough for me when i want to take pictures on the go, otherwise i bring along a real camera with me. I don't think phone cameras are good enough to replace an actual camera just yet.

I want to jump on the band wagon here cos im in the same boat, and this thread has thrown a spanner in the works!!
Ive currently got a rooted hero but lack the power from a 1ghz amongst other things....ive played in length with the Desire and genuinely love it, but its knocking on a bit now so am tempted to hold out for the Desire HD as the price is only £100 diff.
What are we saying about the new HD ? Is it likely to going to be a ball ache to do what the desire already does well.....dont get me wrong ill wait for the dev work to catch up but obviously if theres **** hard coded designed to prevent rooting is it gonna be worth it?
also im going unbranded this time....if that makes a difference (aside from the obvious lack of network restrictions!)
I'd suggest wait till the community has successfully rooted the HD, then decide
aww I was gonna go buy the Desire tomorrow, now I can't decide again haha
I can call HTC's distributor here and ask them when exactly the device will release here and how much it will be for. When i was comparing between the Nexus and Desire the price was almost the same but now there is obviously going to be a significant price difference.
I guess for me now it all comes down to the price and customization ability.
I've checked the Desire HD's forums and there seems to be a temporary root solution for it at the moment. Looks like they are still working on it.

I love my HTC Desire more than any phone I have ever had. I baught it the day it came out, and I have not had any trouble with it ever since. I have used CM since 6.x version and I love the product. It has kept me up to date without having to upgrade my phone.
Now im testing out some of the ISC versions that works on my phone, still I feel that the hardware is now not enough for me, (including cam- quality, and especially internal memory and processor speed).
So I wonder what phone should I consider if I decide to buy a new phone? Or should I wait for something extraordinary to come on the market?
Wait for HTC Edge or Ville. I also came to conclusion that I want better GPU and better camera. For 2-year-old phone Desire is still unbelievable competitive.

Those two phones looks amazing, especially the Edge with the quad-core. Hope the camera could be a reasonably replacement for a digital camera. I havent seen many phones that can match the flash that regular digital cameras have.
I am more devoted to stay with HTC after I saw they have the HTCdev.com .
Was considering to look into some of the samsung- phones, but I feel its a bit more plastic than HTC.
I agree with mikbe on this one. My Desire is suprisingly competitive after almost two years. If I should buy a phone today, it would probably be the SII. But since my Desire is still alive and kicking, I'm gonna wait for the "next big thing", whatever (or whoever) that might be. I love my HTC, but I'm not married to them Maybe the SIII...?

Same here, still enjoying my Desire as if I got it yesterday.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
if you buy today, then I would choose HTC Sensation
but it is reasonable to wait for HTC Edge
if you buy the Samsung I bought a samsung galaxy nexus
Just be a few weeks until the next set of HTC phones will be released at MWC. I would wait until after then - something might grab you, or if not, the current phones should come down in price. This is the worst time to buy just now!

after my htc desire I may switch to the htc sensation
though...i also like the size and look of it very much
having a tablet some of the 'new-power-devices' features are not required
i may even go back to a smaller phone next time...so having more a 'telephone' than a small supercomputer
I was htc fan for many years now..but also considering a samsung as my next android phone
I think I will wait for the next great HTC phone. Now that I have Sandvolds ICS I can float a bit longer. And now that I have an extra partition I can install lots of stuff. The ICS is a bit buggy, bit hopefully it will become complete. Sandvold is doing a great job. Recommend it for everyone !
Is it your Fav phone?

I don't mean any offense by this, but I think this Thread does not really belong in the Q&A section.
While it is a question if all of us think, whether this is the most awesome phone since the invention of cans and a string, it is not one that can be definitively answered.
So this would belong in the general section. This section - as I understand it - is for folks who have trouble with their device and seek advice or help.
actually it was meant for "Off-Topic" i do not know how it ended here =0
Not my FAVOURITE phone ever, simply because I waited so long for it and then it came with so many issues (for me). Dodgy loose z-hinge which causes the two halves of the phone not to stay tight shut (mine is still buffered with layers of electrical tape in between to stop the annoying tapping when one half hits the other when typing on the screen), poor screen in sunlight, really poor speaker, 4 row keyboard instead of 5. These are the things that made me unhappy when I got it, but with little else to choose from (Android qwerty-wise) I had little option but to get used to it.
I think my favourite phone ever has to be my G1, simply because it was on a completely different level to what I had been using previously (Nokia smartphones like the N85 and N73). Yeah, sure it didn't really have the hardware needed (especially towards the end of it's life) but I LOVED that phone like a child :-D
The G2/DZ is a pretty decent phone, but was not groundbreaking in any way, shape or form. The development scene for it is just as good as I remember the G1's being, which is a plus - and ultimately that, and the fact there are still no better qwertys in the UK, is the only reason I'm still using this thing.
I love it because I got in love with it in March, and wanted to get it with a budget of just 250€ euros... No used ones weren't fake, so I got a Nexus One, great phone, and I decided to keep it thinking it was better of my beloved DZ, than in August Desire Z was 240€ new and sold my nexus one to get it. Now I love it, every single thing but the back cover which is already damaged. I like HTC assistance: they sent me a courier (is it right?) beacause I lived 20km far from the collection point and then in one working week I had it back repaired... (now on the other side they're asking me to go to the colelction point to get a new usb cable, which is 10€ and I should take 10 euros of train to get there..).
But as for the phone itself it just lacks a better GPU and a bit more of battery... Oh yes, it should be at least two metres thicker and five tons lighter
but I love it!

yEAH g2 is an amazing device!
When I look at all the new phones without hard keys or trackpads, I don't know what I'll find to replace my G2. I just have to get a handle on my battery drain issues then I can get another two years from it. I still miss the g1 keyboard sometimes, but the g2 is better in so many ways.

great phones =)
Its actually the only phone I loved that hasnt broken on me yet had it for almost a full year now and it still runs great. Dropped it plenty of times on the ground and it only has a few scratches & dents. Z-hinges aren't really bothersome and really isnt that loose, it makes the phone fun to flip and play around with actually! I really cant see a new phone w/o a qwerty board. Lets hope we get to see at least some this year.
I honestly dont know if there is another phone out there for me to update to! So I see myself with the g2 for a looooong time! And I would have never updated to it if it wasnt for the H+ speeds!
G1 in honesty has the best hand placement/keyboard feel!
Another plus was it was Black too!!
Have had it for more than a year and was my first smart phone. For me the only other device that competes is mytouch 4g slide simply because I can't live without keyboard but imo this has a far better look and feel than the 4g

It's my favorite phone, but it only became so after rooting it. IMO Sense is a bulky solution for dummy proofing a phone. When I rooted and got rid of the bloat I started loving it more and more.
I had a Desire before I went to the G2. I had to find out the expensive way that a touchscreen only phone just doesn't work for me
I had the g1 before this, and a few sidekicks before that. I've been hooked on keyboard phones since around 2006. Being a t-mobile customer, I am bound to what they provide so physical keyboards have become somewhat of a necessary thing for me when shopping for a phone. The g2 came as quite a surprise really. It's nearly 2 years old now and with a little tweaking, it's still preforming as well as a lot of todays (stock) high end devices. Bravo htc.
I'm looking forward to future physical keyboard devices.
This phone sure is a great product.
Nice collection of roms to choose from, and gotta love the keyboard.
First phone with physical QWERTY to me, and I won't buy a phone without it again.
This does need some tweaking (custom rom & overclocking) to be fast enough for daily use - but it's very easy thing to do.
This is my second Android-phone.
I've had all the iphones since the original. I'm just bored and ready to experience android. In reality the iphone has not changed much over the last few years. The one x is the first android phone that has really caught my attention. I'm really looking forward to receiving my phone tomorrow. Anyone else switching over?
Ya i have just changed my iPhone 4s out whit 1x and thats the best thing i have ever done..
this phone is soo nice. just need some exp on rooting and use custom roms ^^ but wen thats done you got your self the best phone in tha world ^^
i am thinking two to ditch my iphone to this one
gonner be the best thing you ever do on android you getting alot more freedom whit your phone.
I've had:
Htc Desire
Htc Desire HD
Htc Sensation
iPhone 4 (bought as gift) i really do not like it. its currently the only phone i have ATM and i hardly use it basic calls and texts :-O
Grey Htc One X coming 2morro cant wait to be back to normal.
Glad to see some iPhone users' are giving android a chance, instead of using their iPhones as a sex toy on themselves
Just got mine. Been quite happy with my 4s, but this phone seemed to be the first android, that really could live up to my expectations, and which is running fluently. Had an LG 2X which was quite a disappointment. But looking forward to play around with this, and see if it can take me away from my iphone for good
I'm moving up from my super reliable Desire
Mainly because i'm always running low on memory to install apps! ... but also because the One X looks amazing.

Seeing as HTC OneX became available in the various parts of the world, I see many Tapatalk signatures boasting their new hardware.

Probably soon...
6 days en-counting
I had one last Thursday from expansys. Used it till Saturday when I became so irritated by the camrecord freezes I gave it to my son for my old sgs2. Its good, and when the battery usage and other minor software glitches have been sorted will no doubt be a winner. However, seeing the chance to shift it without having to suffer eblag was too good to miss. I have now registered to preorder the sgs3. After the sgs2 it will have to be stunning...yes far more so than a One X. With or without heavy muli-tasking I did not find the One X stunningly fast I wouldn't have said any better than this samsung. The HTC build quality and shape is an impressive piece of design and QA. You can't fault it's manufacture but with an iffy camera even the multi-task button and bfo screen couldn't swing it for me. So I wouldn't dis it as it's undoubtedly the best phone on the market at the moment. Samsung have no doubt now have committed one of their spec options to production and won't be searching for a 1.28 update within 3 days of it's release.

The one series is brutal but HTC are losing out on reliability. The phones are lovely, clean and the usual awesomness but it has no spark. I can't help but feel there is something missing when having a play on the one series. I don't know why but I might drop HTC after so many years and go towards Motorola.
The G1 is still king in my eyes.

Use search function!! How many times must you noobs be tol...oops, got carried away there for a sec
I reverted my Desire to RCMix2.0 last night (for anyone reading or using SEARCH, the BEST ROM in the history of phone modding), because I know it to be reliable. Then I charged the phone and placed it back in it's box and *sniff* buried it *sniff* in the *sniff* bottom drawer of my *sniff* bedside table *sniff, sob, sniff*
If I may say a few words...it was a good and just phone. It went anywhere and did anything I wanted it to (and I mean anything...this phone could vibrate on demand!!). Sure, we had our moments, like the times it'd hit boot screen after a fresh flash and just hang there, looking stupid...but a quick rip out of battery and kick in the guts usually had us walking, and talking, phone in hand, off into the sunset again.
But I musn't cry...I know Desy would want me to move on and be happy...and lemme tell you, I am more than happy. I have found the most wonderful, sweet, caring and beautiful replacement phone I have ever known! She is so smooth to the touch, performs in ways I only ever dreamed of...I am actually hesitant to enhance or modify her, she is so perfect. And when she gazes into my eyes with that big, beautiful screen...all the pain of losing my Desy seems so distant. I am just so happy now!!
Farewell from me too.
Desire has served me very well - my contract ran out 6 months ago, but there was nothing else out there that offered that much more than my trusty Desire and the huge choice of custom roms on XDA (thanks to great work from the devs here)
Then the One X was released.....

I'm waiting for the S3 too! My little hope is it having a quad core with cortex A15 cores and a new gpu... But I'm dreaming at first I've said "if S3 it's not better than One X, I will stick to HTC", but after reading some "not too much positive" feedback (mainly about Tegra 3) I will leave the One X where it is
If that's not the case (about cpu/gpu) and the S3 it's not that surprising, I think I will wait a little longer with my lil' old desire, the new oxygen MildWild 3.9 got me a new phone

I'm sticking around for yet a while. Maybe even until next year. As I see it, the step from desire to todays top of the line is just to small. I don't want to pay that much for such a small change.
The development may seem slow to us consumers, but that only means that developers have more models in their product pipelines. I'm waiting for that number of models to reach critical mass, forcing developers to skip several steps in the pipeline queue and release some serious hi tech all of a sudden.
My guess is that the sgs2 was so good that the market became saturated in combination with Apple not releasing #5.
I hope that when either critical mass is reached or #5 is released, some first class equipment will see the light of day, that companies will release second rate (compared to the above) gear at a sale and that everyone dumps prices and runs for the hills.
Or I might settle for Samsung 3
I just bought a Nexus 4 two days ago. Damn phone is sexy as hell. Fast too! So yeah, thanks to everyone who made my first Android experience well worth it. I learned a lot from here but now it's time I move on to more exciting things
Shout out to the developers for their hard work and patience
Sorry for bringing this thread back from the grave. I hope I see some of ya'll on the Nexus 4 threads..
