I don't know what to do. I really like my wife's Desire, and I actually ordered one. Now I read that the new iPhone will probably be available end June, if not sooner.
I don't know which one to go for. Any (objective) suggestions?
If you have to ask then your proberly better off with a iphone
Everyone here will most likely say Desire, seeing as you posted in a desire specific thread........
I am using a 3GS at the moment, and I love it. However, the Desire is a huge jump from the HTC Hero (which my wife also has), and for the first time I see it as an alternative to the iPhone. With Froyo coming (if it comes to the Desire), I am even more interested.
A big plus is also that the Desire is available now, while no one can tell when the iPhone will be available here in SA.
This is why I am asking for opinions, as for why in this particular forum - because I believe that objective users who have used both, and are informed about what is coming for iPhone, will be able to offer best advice.
If you love your iPhone 3GS and are happy with the level of control that Apple exerts over the platform, wait for the new iPhone and then make a decision.
Regards,
Dave

My iPhone is jailbroken, so not too phased with that. However I do find the features announced for Froyo very appealing.

Well i should of said before, i come from apple iphone 2g, 3g and 3gs. And i can say for myself without a shodow of a doubt, that android is a much more superior OS the apple have mad, yes the UI may not be as polished, but Android i belive is a more capable device than steve jobs will ever allow.
Plus i LOVE supporting the OPEN community. Not what apple decide i can see. ( Remembering they could remotely delete stuff of your iphone).
In my opionion only i would suggest the Android devices everytime!!
I can see their soon going to knock apple off the top spot for good. Espically after that thing they call an ipad, waste of fu*king money!!
if you like singletask and homescreens with only icons, then you should definitely go for the iphone 4g
If you like a REAL OS then go for Android

I have both phones and I see positives in both. The layout of the Iphone is better to me in that it is marginally bigger and the keyboard is better, however, the software and ability to make changes to the Desire is very appealing too and you can get other keyboards.
If you ask me outright which phone, I'd have to say the Desire and the thing that sways me is the FM Radio (silly I know but I use the radio a lot). The Iphone doesn't have a radio.
Hope this helps.

Yea, the new iphone looks good.
I reason i didn't get one is because everyone else has one and the desire turns heads a bit more, especially with the ''seeds of life'' live wallpaper. it always makes people chuckle.
If you like modding your phone and you love instant updates, then i would go with N1 I have just sold my desire and bought an N1

Agreed..................
Hardware-wise, the new iPhone is just a clone of the Desire with a nicer design. Nothing special, more like catching up with the competition (and being left behind immediately, by phones like the Evo, Moto Shadow, Galaxy S, Dell Thunder etc...).
Software-wise, Android is much better than iPhone OS. Since we know already that iPhone OS 4 will not even come close to Android 2.1/2.2, I think it's safe to get a Desire now.
Or you wait for another great Android phone that's coming out in June/July. Waiting yes, but for new Android phones rather than that iPhone.
Wait for the Evo , when it goes on gen release , Bar a few bits in the US ... My Desire ( orange UK ) is fab until then ...

How can a phone that's around for about 4 years and hasn't changed much in design and always has different hardware compared to others be a clone?
May I remind you the 3gs still is superior to the desire graphic wize...
The new Iphone will have a lot more graphical power then the desire, even the samsung galaxy (wich uses a new model of the gpu the iphone uses) will fall short. Because if it doesn't steve won't make a lot of money.
Maybe new htc phones will be able to beat the new Iphone, but the Desire won't...
Talking about software I totally agree with you, android already is more mature then Iphone os will ever be. And it's the main reason I won't ever buy an Isheep
Well if look at the "all package" the desire, as well as other Android phones are better that the iphone, simply because of the OS. With Desire you also get a powerfull and fast smartphone.
Sure graphics are better on the iphone for now, but when Android allow installation on sdcard and games start to use opengl we should see many improvements, since the developers will surely use the most used platforms for games i mean (directx and opengl - opengl for smartphones of course).
On the look side, the really annoying thing (to me) on the desire are the physical buttons, i prefer buttons like the wildfire or the legend. Another thing is the mono speaker which lacks some quality to me in some phone sounds and when in calls but is ok when listen to music (maybe this could be improved by htc in future updates).
You should also take in consideration that despite Android is very young it started already to make some bumps on Apple iPhones, so you could imagine what the future will bring to the Android users... And HTC makes good phones and their sense really makes a difference to me, because UI is very very important! i really dislike those basic screens that the iphone have with no widgets.
Some user have refered that iphone keyboard is better, but if you use HTC_IME_MOD you will get one of the best keyboards ever on Desire! Much much better that the iphone.
It's not that i don't like iphone or Apple, but another thing to take into account are the very overpriced cost of an iphone when comparing with the competitors.
In addiction i would suggest WP7. I'm really waiting for it to be released (end of this year) because sometimes i'm really tired of having to use icons or whatever to open a program on android or the iphone. WP7 will bring a new way to interact with the programs that i liked very much (thats why i like widgets on android, i have what i want directly on the screen without having to open the program).
For now i will stick with Desire because i like Android and i use the Google services as well as Microsoft services, so i will definitely get a WP7 (perhaps from HTC again) when it gets out.
Hope this helps!
ONE LAST NOTE: Maybe Nokia will learn with their mistakes and start shipping phones with Android and WP7 - This would be very interesting and could surely break the market a lot!!
Personally I hate apple and everything they do and stand for. I would back this up but don't have time.....
I hate seeing that every sound station of any worth has Iphone/Ipod adapters etc however it shows they have been much more effective at marketing than any other company at present.
For example, the chap sitting opposite me buys everything apple. He wants the iPAD just because its the latest Apple gadg. He has no need for it though. I find that laughable.
I had an iTouch and sold it. The way it forces me to use it stinks. The lack of control is frustrating. The lack of flash is just laughable.
I came from Nokia (N900) to HTC for the first time, and apart from crap AMOLED screens that are simply unuseable outside and the touch screens (not my favourite but seems to be the future sadly), I love it. Ever tried using Maps / sat nav whilst out walking.....its impossible and a joke.
I would say if HTC came up with a screen that worked in day light and had full flash (bring on 2.2) I would say the desire is near perfect for me. Apple? Appple who???
I bought my wife an iPhone 3G last Christmas. At that time I was using HTC Touch Pro and as soon as I saw the big screen and tried it out I could not even look at my TP. ;-)
I bought her the iPhone because of how user friendly it is for people with little to no knowledge about phones/IT etc. She has absolutely no problem with it. Everything that she installs works as intended.
However, I myself could not use an iPhone because I need a little bit more freedom (and I don't like the fact that all iPhones look the same).
I like to experiment with new ROMs, applications and I felt that Android is much better for this purpose. So I bought a Desire.
So... if you want a phone that works out-of-the-box and you don't want to waste time with modifications and you don't mind the restrictions go for the iPhone.
If you want more "freedom" (customizations, ROMs) go for the Desire
Although, I must say that Desire is also an example of a "out-of-the-box working" phone and so far I had no urge to swap ROMs...
Seeing that you are willing to wait until June for the new iPhone why not do so and see what HTC will prepare by then? Then you will have either the latest iPhone or the latest Android phone (perhaps with Froyo).
You lose nothing, you still have your 3GS (which I think is still a superb machine).
Well, a bit late but perhaps this might help:
Choose the one you feel best with. The one that makes you happy. The one that satisfies your needs.
As for OS quality or apps or functionality, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
So, same as others. Why not wait for the new iPhone and then see what's available then. At least if that is the reason you are in doubt. Because otherwise you can do the waiting game for years without ever buying a phone
Unless the new iPhone gives you more felxibility then definitely the Desire.
Tricky title?
I don't know if this is the correct subforum... if not, mods please transfer.
Anyway... As many of you probably did, I have had many phones. The thing is that with my previous devices, the desire for them got lost in like a week after I purchased the device. But with the HTC Desire, I have kinda different feeling. I mean, I purchased my Desire like a month now, and I am not a bit bored by it. It still looks fun to me, and I still find interesting things to do with it. So, what is your opinions about this? How long did you enjoyed your new "shiny" device, and for how long you have been (are) enjoying the Desire?
I know for me the fact I can mould the phone how I want has played a huge part in keeping me interested. I usually upgrade to nokia E class phone, the E71 was my last phone, but coming from a linux fanboy the Desire feels like -my- phone just like my laptop is moulded exactly how I want it.
The fact its the first phone I've owned that has yet to struggle with anything I throw at it helps a huge amount too

Longer then the HTC HD2, BlackBerry Bold
This device is amazing indeed. I still have moments that I look at it and think... wow And soon Froyo will come, which will give you another few weeks of 'new enjoyment'. Also I still hope that the Android Market is going to start filling with great quality apps soon :0) Angry Birds this summer is a must have game.
And in Q4, Android 3 may be released and we can start enjoying that. (probably not from HTC, but from XDA) There is lots going on in the Android World!

I'm pretty much bored with it as I get with any phone once you do all with it you wanted. It becomes just another phone. The only difference with this one is that I'm hell angry on HTC for there build quality in general which covers everything from the poor UMTS reception to the stupid body design with button back light shining through micro holes under the screen.

Been happy with my HTC phones since I opened up a box of Magics and knew I was buying one by the end of the day. I've now had a Magic, a Hero and now my Desire and I always find something new to do or try out every week and that's without having rooted the phone. Before this I've had a S.E. W950 and after an E71 and while I've had my Hero I've had an iPhone and I've got to say that the iPhone has nothing on the overall features and abilities of even my Hero.

Loved you very much. Moved onto a Backflip. Couldn't take the lack of support for the speaker on Android. For those of you looking for an Android phone I recommend the Backflip... It's slicker, and even better: it's free with a new plan on AT&T
Even still good luck with this Android port.
If anyone wants to buy a used T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 I'm selling it on eBay and it's only at 125$ bidding so far...
The backflip is literally the worst Android phone made. Just trying searching google or side loading apps on it. You will be unpleasantly surprised.
Yeah, I'm moving to a iPhone next week and will also be putting my TP2 on eBay. Good luck on ur eBay auction.

There is a reason that with a new contract the backflip is free and the TP2 is still $250....

ok honestly you just made the WORST decision in history! why the heck would you drop the TP2 for the crappiest phone on the planet? slicker and better is more like uglier and horrible, worst perfomance, and of course Android Market is locked down, you cant load any third party apps! and why you didnt get the Aria? its 10000x more better but whatever and moving to a backflip just because you couldnt get speaker support on the Android port is a real unacceptable excuse, its a PORT! TouchPro2 was made for Windows Mobile, dont expect the devs to make everything to work in one shot, it seems like you insulted the port project by moving to an actual android because lack of sound, dont worry youll regret the whole decision!
ugh my venting session is done -.- total pointless thread, sorry but i just had to rant, because thats the worst decision ive seen from a consumer
xero_racer, roast much lol, I agree with you and all, cause Im like big time trying my best to get the sound working, and I am a noob when it comes to all of this, but im still tryin cause I speak tiny amounts of C++.and I can usually figure stuff out, and this kinda upset me cause that just makes me feel like i'm wasting my time towards something that people wont appreciate...

Odd. The droid is one of the best performing phones on the market, period. The build quality is unusually high for Motorola. I'm sure the Droid X follows suit, the specs are nothing to laugh at.
Motorola Android phones that have extremely LOW build quality and are also low spec'ed:
Cliq
Cliq XT
Backflip
always liked the nexus one for a native android phone, just not a phone i feel like buying though.
Nice. Motorola's cell phones almost shut their entire mobile division down. The droid was their saving grace, but the backflip and the cliq have been plagued with problems, including a possible lack of upgradability to eclair without rooting. Lack of sound is to be expected in a build that's still in development, I hope you didn't get this pone with the sole intent of installing android.
Sorry about your lack of taste, but you should expect to be flamed when opening a thread bashing an excellent piece of hardware.
ive been thinking about switching to an android phone. but not a backflip. its horrible. its slow, ugly, outdated, have you tried using that thing they call a keyboard? my brother has an aria and i love it, but id prefer something like a touch pro 2 with android. i might settle in the future for something like a nexus one with an htc sense rom. a sense rom is whats tempting.
Have u ever used a backflip or cliq?

Totally second that lol
what about the Samsung Epic 4G. It has almost the same form factor as the tp2 but a larger screen.
I cant wait to get that in gsm.
The Backflip is not that bad depending on what type of user you are. If you active in this forum then most likely it is not the phone for you. My wife got one and she loves it. She is not a power user though. She likes to make phone calls, text messaging, the occasional photo upload, very light web surfing and facebook. She has no interest in side loading apps or any of that other stuff. For her the backflip suites all of her need.
For anyone else here that would like to switch over to a native Android phone I suggest you take a look at the Samsung Captivate. It is a highly anticipated phone and is supposed to be just as powerful as the Droid X. It releases this coming sunday the 18th of July. For those of you who can't live without a keyboard then you maybe out of luck cause the Backflip is the only Android phone on AT&T witih a keyboard.
I myself am a power user who needs the latest and greatest in both hardware and software. I though have grown very tired of Windows Mobile and the daily reboots just to keep it running well enough to use. I am also out of patients waiting for a full working port of Android. The developers here do an awsome job and I am not puttingi them down. I just want to switch to Android and I want to do it yesterday. I to have put my Tilt 2 up on Ebay and will be purchasing the Captivate this coming Sunday.
Samsung Epic 4G/Captivate/Vibrant/Fascinate (all versions of the Samsung Galaxy S) looks like the go-to phone if you're leaving XDAndroid. I'll probably be getting the Vibrant once it's released on T-mo.
Nothing against the Rhodium, but mine's beat up (probably only good for parts) and I don't normally keep a phone as long as I've kept this one. If anyone needs a t-mobile Touch Pro 2 for parts or whatever, PM me after the 15th.

Am i missing something or did any one realize he spelled goodbye wrong?
So heres the thing. My father lives in Pakistan. I came to Pakistan from England for my summer holidays and I was thinking of gifting my Galaxy Nexus (running JB) to my father as he really needs a good, capable business phone. Hes not particularly happy using his combo of the Nokia E5, the galaxy tab and Xperia X10.
So I was wondering what i should get next. I was initially planning to wait for Nokia's latest offering and the new iPhone. I'm not particularly uptight about the OS I use, as long as I am happy with the phone. With the Galaxy Nexus, I was extremely happy with its performance, and i cannot for the life of me live with a phone with a screen less than 4.3 inches anymore (its spoilt me). But Galaxy S3 or the One X just don't look as big of an upgrade compared to the Galaxy Nexus.
And I'm not too hard on apps either. Kik, Fifa 12, and Flipboard are the only ones i use.
Would it be wise for me to get WP8? Its not that android hasnt kept me happy, but WP8 has me really intrigued, what with the idea of Pureview integrated into an ecosystem thats useable. And are there any unique phones on the market right now? Other than the obvious heavyweights.
Any help would be really really appreciated. :cyclops:

I would go for the S3,since it's the best out there for the moment.
I have never been a fan of Windows on cellphones (guess I'm disappointed by the old WM on the old phones).
As for iPhony... I boycott them simply because they are a big corporation with evil business practices.

Hey man!
Thats a nice thing to do for your dad, its hard to beat a Gnex atm, and having played about with my friends HTC one and s3, i still prefer my Gnex and the softkeys, i cant imagine an actual button on the front of my phone!
WP8 looks good to me too, but Jellybean is a new level of smooth, and Gnex's are getting the OTA already, so maybe just get another one? lol the new iphone and possibly a new nexus are planned for the fourth quarter, so if you could wait im sure they would be equally awesome (although coming from an iPhone to the Gnex I don't wanna go back lol maybe ios6 is different though, their making a lot of noise about it anyways). out of the HTC and s3, the HTC was nicer to use and more fluid, the touchwiz on the s3 really got on my nerves, and im sure it bogs the phone down (still superfast though). but sense on the htc was really intuitive. but thats just my opinion. im sure a custom rom on the s3 would sway my opinion though the nexus is just great and your right, this community is awesome. the asus padphones pretty unique, but its something u either like or hate. or dont know what to think of like me
maybe go to a few phone stores and test the phones on offer, some unusual suspects might catch your eye :fingers-crossed:

you might want to try the lumia 900. I've actually used it for a while (more liek a couple of hours) and i really felt that it was something i could use. Plus it felt so good in my hands. And yes i do understand why some people would not like the iphone.
But i really do not see myself getting the S3. I'll be really honest, it feels cheap. The One X looks and feels better. But as I said none of these two phones offers anything quite different from the galaxy nexus. Why pay 100 quid more for very incremental differences in user experience. The galaxy nexus right now is a much better package for the amount of money you pay. But I want something different.

I know right. The keys on the galaxy nexus are brilliant.
The thing is, windows phone has really got my eye right now. I mean someone was talking about it having directX support and that porting games form windows 8 would be quite easy for developers. If something along those lines could happen, it could change the mobile gaming landscape. But yes i do realise how right now its more a fight between the One X and the S3. I still dont fancy these two phones. Maybe an android offering in the future might get me, but I just cant buy a device i dont love. You know. Like with the Galaxy nexus, it was love at first sight. The curve at the back and the whole feel of the damn thing lol. Loved the experience. I want something of that sort with my next device lol.
Getting win phone 7 before win phone 8 which is near corner is stupid
Getting iPhone 4s now when new 4" iPhone cones in few months is stupid.
Getting new iPhone than on same old OS would be even more stupid.
LOL.

I dont say theyre expensive. I just think theyre not different enough from a Gnex to be at their price points. The Gnex is really good value for money is what i meant. And I still think that stock Jelly Bean offers a better experience than touchwiz or Sense. Wp8 on the other hand might rival the whole UX thing.

I thought the same about the s3, but the screens great and it is pretty solid (watched it drop from a desk onto a hard floor, once we took a breath and checked it was ok) touchwiz was the killer but that can be fixed with a custom rom.
The lumia 900 wont be getting WP8 as far as i know, so if something different is what your after, maybe waiting for the new one is a good idea.

Lol. That's why I'll probably wait for WP8. I dunno about the iPhone. The only reason anyone would get the iPhone over the S3, One X or Gnex is its gaming prowess. I mean the interface is kind of..well crap. but with a 4.7 inch screen, gaming on the iphone could really be something. I know that will never happen but I mean. Hoping for something of that sort. Browsing on a tiny 3.5 inch screen is a pain in any case.
Btw i do know that gaming on android doesnt suck. But i just feel we dont get developers giving it the same amount of love as the iOS equivalents. Wouldnt you agree. FIFA12 on iOS is comparable to the 3ds version. But the same version on android feels like a half hearted effort and its even costlier.

Do you think with a clean JB ROM, I could get noticeably better performance out of the S3? Compared to the GNex that is? And I have seen the S3 screen. It doesnt have this sort of banding that I'v got on my GNex but the banding has never bothered me at all. Otherwise the screens feel identical to my eyes.

Yeah Ive heard about that too, and your right it could change everything! but windows has failed royally in the past, i guess ill believe it when i see it!
aw dude I know, I was so close to going with an s2, the guy at O2 was pushing but I tried the nexus and knew i wanted it! gonna keep it until a new nexus or something that catches my eye like the Gnex did to start with haha Happy Hunting anyway and be patient if you can, Im sure there's some cracking phones on the way.
and as for gaming, Androids starting to get the attention it deserves. EA and Gameloft have some great games already and more are on the way. i was super impressed with the dark knight rises game from gameloft, people have been having problems with it but it runs like a dream for me and its ambitious. things can only get better!

I cant say for certain as my friend wont do it lol despite my peer pressure. but the touchwiz is bloaty and it cant harm anything to get rid of it. compared to the Gnex? it depends, hardware wise theoretically it should, but there are rom and kernel combos on the Gnex that make it lightning so i'll be honest and say the difference probably wont be huge. U cant get much faster than lightening fast haha maybe someone in the s3 forum has an answer to that who previously had a Gnex.

Yes. I might wait til the new nexus devices come out. Rumors about 3 or 4 of them coming out at the same time are interesting as well.
And yes I'll be keeping my eye out for all those devices from Japan as well. Some of the androids there are really something (design wise).
And yes i know. Gaming on these 4.5+ inch screens is really what portable gaming will be after a couple of years. With the amount effort most devs are putting into mobile gaming, we might see the 3ds and vita fizzling out.
I will also be looking around in the S3 forums. I think it really wont be that much of a difference. Your'e right Gnex really is quick. Dunno how much quicker you can get lol.

Well, you know for sure you like the gnex, so why not just get another one? When the new Nexus comes out you can take a look at it and maybe sell the gnex. As for the S3, it has significantly better hardware... screen, camera, processor etc... but it doesn't have the Nexus software advantages.
Can't argue on games on iPhone vs android cause I'm not a gamer.
But I would differ on this that s3 or even one x doesn't have more to it than nexus.
Yes nexus gets OS updates fast but when both phones are on same level of OS, which they will in month or so, it will be different.
Example the leaked new build of one x is notably faster than previous, everyone noted that who uses it. And that's 4.04.
Also on s3 you put apex, nova and you get stock look.
Talking about quad s3 here, US users may don't agree.

What troll? Where's the troll?
He likes nexus true
He likes but wont buy S3 or One X for his reasons, which are only good phones apart nexus in my opinion at the moment.
He likes win phone 8 and want to buy when it comes... and than there's iPhone somewhere in between.
Well the screen of my previous Nexus look better than my S3 so it depends on each device and the batch it came from. My Nexus screen didn't have banding problems. I like the higher dpi too.
S3 has a much more powerful quadcore GPU so its one of the best phone for gaming now. Playing psx games it was over 500fps. And the camera is excellent, but I don't think its any better than the S2 or Note.
I trading my S3 to go back to the Nexus, made a big mistake buying any phone but a Nexus. Now that I realized that fact, my phone hobby will become more affordable, especially with Google pricing.
i don't like my gnex
My gnex was dropping the signal all the time.
My wife's Droid x has a much better signal reception. My gnex is much faster on the wifi. I got Verizon to send me a replacement and the second one has same problem. But the second one has powered down on me a couple of times now for no reason. The phone was in a case on my side when it happened the few times that it did. I am frustrated now. Verizon said we could talk about a different model
But what do you replace this with. What is most bug free without losing ground?
You sound like you're into gaming, so right off the bat I'd recommend waiting for the Note II. It sounds like samsung will pack in a lot of power, and once you go bigger you generally can't go back.
Waiting (a bit longer) for the next Nexus is also another possibility. Hopefully it'll come with an OMAP 5 or another A15 chipset. (As a strong soft-key advocate, it's also not likely I could get anything besides a Nexus anytime soon either.)
While I too find WP intriguing, I cannot in good conscience recommend it or iOS due to the limitations they built into the platform. I'm not even talking about limited custom modding (though that's also a big deal to me), but even more basic limitations: no custom launcher, no custom keyboard (no swiftkey or swipe? They must really think their stuff is the end-all-be-all or something), no file manager, no sideloading of apps. Some of this might be mitigated by jailbreaking, but only at a stability cost.
This problem is even worse in WP due to its further limitations; not even WP8, to my knowledge, will allow custom backgrounds in its launcher - my Launcher 7 is practically more advanced than their bloody default start screen. Still, if you do decide on WP, you should definitely wait until the 8 devices come out, or you'd just be buying into a dead end.
Right now the S3 or One X are the obvious choices, but I would recommend waiting. It feels like better stuff is right around the corner (whether the Note, Nexus, or One X+). Unfortunately, I don't think England has the Nexus for $350 deal, or I would definitely recommend that for your father.
So,
6 months ago I decided to try out the iPhone. It was an experiment that ended up with me thinking apple is not that bad. But i love tinkering and the tinkering itch was back. So I did a straight trade with someone, my iPhone 5 16 for an S4. Mine you before the iPhone I rocked a rooted GNex running AOSP, before that a rooted Droid X AOSP, a rooted DInc running AOSP and my first phone a Moto Droid original NOT rooted.
So here I am with this S4 and before I bought it I checked to see if there were any ROM's see the activity and it was booming. So F it, got it only to find out it had the latest bootloader that was unlockable. Touchwiz sucks, I tried it for a few days until I said F It and sold it. Now I'm on the boat another iPhone 5 or try the HTC One.
I don't see much development activity but with the people that have been here a while. Can you give insight, it just got cracked and it I get it, it will be S-Off and Unlocked before you can sneeze.
A little thought and guidance would be helpful.
Thanks

Not Really Jorv... I love me a stock android experience and if I can eventually get that with the HTC. I would sign up for it in a heartbeat. I think Sense to have cut back. Rock the HTC One with say Nova and get rid of the bulk of the terrible things Sense offers.
One thing I could not stand with the S4, is that they cluttered the notification panel and status bar with crap. Way too much I did NOT or want.

There are several Google Play Edition and CM-based ROMs for the HTC One in the development section.
I was kind of in the same boat as you. I had an iPhone 5 but I missed the customization of Android, plus I REALLY wanted a bigger screen. Got a Galaxy S4 but really didn't like it - too locked down and TouchWiz sucks.
So, sold the S4 and got the HTC One. First thing I did was mail it off for S-OFF (before the software S-OFF was available). Unlocked bootloader and debloated this thing. Right now, I'm running completely stock ROM with bloat removed because I actually like Sense. It's FANTASTIC in all regards.
There's already several solid options for the stock android experience in the original development thread + slimrom which isn't listed. Have you read anything on this forum yet? + its already s-off and unlocked.
With a software exploit only made availble a couple of weeks ago, it will take time for a large amount of ROMS to be released. There are already 5-7 and more coming every day. If you like tinkering, not even sure why you would consider an iPhone. Even my 70 year old mother got bored of the iPhone and made the switch to Android.
If you want a solid phone that works and you don't mind drinking the Apple Kool Aid and remaining totally stock, get the iPhone 5. If you want anything more from your device, get an HTC One. Pretty simple really.
Came from the Gnex just like you and got antsy at upgrade time and pulled the trigger early and got the S4, too. While it was a decent phone, the bloat was unbelievable and I found that I'm no fan of touchwiz. And I agree that the notification area is bombed out pretty heavily.
I returned my S4 after a week because the One was available on Verizon and never looked back. Completely happy on stock with a couple mods from the themes and apps section and Xposed framework. I'm curious to try Viper when it's available for us but truly am content with stock until then.
I'm not going to dump on the iPhone. It's a solidly built, locked down device. My wife has one and is happy with it but I like to tinker and have all the options that Android brings to the table. There's quite a few solid AOSP and Sense based roms right now, like others have said before me, and it looks like more are coming.

I think you'll be surprised with Sense. It's actually pretty nice, especially for photos, etc. Like mentioned before, though, if you like tinkering you're just wasting your time getting an iPhone.

Yes. And you don't want to wait too long to get it either. The thing with software exploits is that they can be easily patched, which is guaranteed to happen to the current rumrunner s-off exploit with the 4.3 roll out. This is perhaps the only occasion where Verizon's slow upgrade actually works in the consumer's favor.

Like you, I tried the iPhone for a little while and while its a great device, I can see why a lot of people like it, I just got bored with the UI and frustrated by the lack of capabilities after about 6 months and bought the S3. The S3 was a fantastic phone, TW wasn't so heavy that it effected phone performance severely and overall I was very happy. We switched from Sprint to Verizon and when we did, I bought the S4. I figured I liked the S3 so much that the S4 could only be better. Boy was I wrong, TW has grown to be far too large, device performance was disappointing and the UI is starting to look dated. There were ROMs available to alleviate some of my concerns but overall I was never satisfied with it.
So, I decided to try out the One after I saw S-OFF was achieved. To be honest, I've rooted, jailbroke, unlocked, etc all of my phones since the HTC mogul in 2007. This is the first time I've stayed on a basically stock ROM when other options were available. Sense 5 is so nice, it's very smooth, light weight, and unlike TW doesn't seem like its trying to cover up Android. The HTC One and the S4 use the same processor but the fluidity and general performance on the One is noticeably better, even with the CPU underclocked. The hardware is my favorite of any phone available, its beautiful, sleek and feels really nice in my hand. I'd say at least go play with one before deciding. After I spent 10 minutes with one at Best Buy I was sure I'd be happy with the device.
ROM activity is increasing but honestly, with xposed framework and the available modules, a stock debloated ROM really goes a long way.
I own The HTC One, SG3, and SG4.
SG3 kicked ASS!
HTC One blow them all out the water.
Sg4 is blah and I may sell for moto x.
Thanks for all the responses it has been extremely helpful. I just checked it out from a co-worker who has it. It really is a clean device. The bloat is definitely not there like it is from the SG4. Does anyone here take a lot of pictures with the phone. How's that 4MP camera that lets in more light...

I take a lot of pictures of my kids, and with it getting cooler outside many of those pics will be indoors with less than ideal lighting. In these situations I've been very pleased with the pictures I get. Even blowing up those pictures for use as by desktop background the pics still look very good.
I bought the One before selling the S4. My two concerns about the One compared to the S4 were the camera and battery. I've been satisfied with both.

Of the competing phones I have tested extensively the LG G2 and the Droid Maxx. The G2 was a braindead phone. Whenever I pick it up I had an urge to throw it away, so that was out of the equation.
The Droid Maxx really had me torn. It had close to vanilla Android, superb build quality (this is subjective, but to me the Maxx felt much better in the hand than the One), and, most important of all, the amazing battery life. I just loved that phone, it had everything I wanted in a phone. I was pretty sure the Maxx was going to be my main phone for at least the next year.
Then the HTC One killed it in one arena: signal reception. Now we live in a fringe area of Verizon 4G coverage. Our old phone, the Gnex, absolutely struggles to hold on to the 4G signal. It would drop in and out of 4G many times in an hour, in the best reception areas we can find in the house. The 4G->3G handoff is hard, meaning all data connections gets dropped, so in reality we have to turn off LTE while at home. Both the G2 and the Droid Maxx have about the same signal quality, which is significantly better than the Gnex, but they would still drop 4G from time to time. The One however, simply blows all its competition out of the water in this aspect. It would display 4 bars(!) of LTE in most areas of the house, while the G2 and Maxx would have 2 bars. At first I thought it must be a cheap trick by HTC. The signal strength in the phone status show identical numbers across the phones, and the One just show more bars for the same signal strength. But after more than a week of extensive use on my wife's One, this phone has _never_ dropped the 4G signal in our house in that entire time! Even in the bathroom where we barely get our own wifi signal, the One would somehow miraculously hang on to one bar of LTE, and still maintain a reasonable download speed!
What magic HTC did on this phone I have no idea, but I'm sold, exchanged my Maxx for the One, and now I'm a happy camper
Yeah., over the years I have ditch my point and shoot and have been using my phones for pics and the DSLR for shots. The GNex took terrible the pics, the iPhone was a descent point and shooter. That is what I need a descent point and shoot camera.
I have an iPhone 5 for work and the One. My god, I can never look at the iPhone after using my phone for a few minutes. I know it was this huge marketing this against Apple but the screen size of the iPhone really is a HUGE negative for me.

Yeah, I used to be an SLR guy until I got my Sony RX-100 last year. I used to use it all the time, but the One is good enough that I don't use the RX-100 except for special occasions when I know I'll be taking dozens of pictures.
Coming from a camera on a phone, I'd say the One has one of the best to date. Might not be as epic as the unit on the Lumia 1020, but it definitely holds its own. I snap tons of photos, the the camera in this phone in my opinion trashes the camera in my sister in laws iPhone 5. Either way, the One is an excellent device and coming from my kickin SGS2, in more than happy. The s4 just doesn't compete in the features even though the cpu in the One is running at a slightly lower frequency. I won't even look at the s4 now. This phone stole my damn heart and VanirAOSP put the icing on my cake.

Once again with these "not much developement" comments.. You do realize having 99 copies of one rom isn't development... We have a wonderful variety of roms. Posting threads like this are likely to irritate people. If you want 50 copies of a rom get a nexus device. Follow the golden rule.. If you aren't happy running stock and never expecting it to be updated NEVER buy it. You don't buy bread for the poop you'll turn it into... Be realistic. /rant
I recently went from S3 to 5s and now to the One. I gave the 5s 2-3 solid weeks of trial before I started looking for something else. The only way possible I can explain how anyone would want an iPhone is that out of the box they want a finished product that you install music and apps on. It just seemed so limited on what you could do with it. Something as simple as copying ringtones over was a huge fiasco. Picking the keyboard you want. Etc etc.
My only complaints are the fixed buttons. Maybe I'm just so use to the s3, but the back arrow is opposite on this phone and doesn't seem as convenient with the thumb. I wish the htc logo acted as the home button as well and the home button was swapped on the other side as a menu button. In a few months, hopefully I feel differently. But, I do appreciate the galaxy nexus navigation buttons being able to be changed however you want. wish they would've done the same here.
