Does anyone know what is wrong with my epic screen? (video) - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://youtu.be/8VPftuusCyA
The flickering in that video is not a result of recording, my phone actually looks like that. crazy flickering and horizontal streaks that appear every time there is a mostly white screen (which is why doing stuff like pulling the notification bar down will stop it temporarily i think)... this happens in all apps that have a white screen such as facebook. i've tried rebooting and reflashing the ROM.
has anyone seen this before? do i have to get a new phone?
I'm on aokp milestone 5.2 with nyan 4.2

it worked perfectly. that's weird though. i've been on your kernel since many versions ago and always used the same voodoo color settings, it just started happening yesterday out of nowhere

I have the same issue! But I don't run a different kernel, I run the stock kernel, and voodoo sound won't work without a kernel. What am I supposed to do now?

I had that happened to my phone and it continued. Even when I was I full stock. I took my phone to the sprint store and the. Tech said the cord was a little loose but. It still did that. I got a replacement since. It was a hardware instead of software. The phone I have now does it only when I mess with voodoo values. So it could just be a hardware issue
O. My old one was doing that from day one.

Horizontal line

Pulled my new galaxy s 2 out of my pocket and noticed a thin horizontal white line about 1 inch from the top of the screen, Only on the lock screen. I changed lock screen background and reset the phone but it s still there in the same location (edge to edge). There is no physical damage to the screen and the line is not visible any other time (home screen, pictures, games all fine so far). Anyone else seeing this? Screen shots soon. Maybe normal and i never noticed it?

Can anyone confirm that they do not have a horizontal line under the clock on the stock lock screen like the picture attached?. (not my lock screen btw) after looking around on google it seems this may be normal, but it's hard to find pictures of just the lock screen for the stock rom...thanks for the replies...Not sure how i missed it if it is normal...

not normal. Seems like stuck pixel. Since its an led screen each pixel is an led basically. I would return it if you could if not try to run a test. you can find one from the market just dont remember the name.

noooo. he took a screenshot...that means that a picture of the image being sent to screen for display to the user. Screenshots do not show hardware defects. I believe this to be a bug in the system. I would odin back to stock and post back with results. Not factory reset...odin
edit: if it IS a hardware defect, then it is probably the graphics chip that renders the image that is going bad...not the actual screen
Picture i posted is not my screenshot, gound that with google and added the arrow...i can confirm the line is not visible on any other screen just lock..i really just dont recall seeing it before. Used a screen test app and all screens look ok to me...

then it is most probably just a bug. Are you updated to latest Kl1 firmware? If not, you can update through odin without losing your data. If you are on tha latest firmware and dont want to go through the hassle of odining stock again and setting up everything again then i would just not worry about it as its only on the lock screen
Screen
I do believe that's a design element. I have the exact same thing on the lock screen and I have a brand new phone made January 20th.
I had that when i updated to kl1 or when i used one of the first versions of juggernaut. Just do a fresh install or odin/factory reset from phone.

Yes that's normal. Its suppose to be there. Ive gone through 3 sgs2 and always set up a screen lock and have always noticed it on all 3 phones. Its not a hardware or software issue, its part of the design element for the lockscreen as I'mDan2 also mentioned.

Yes, it's definitely a graphic design element. Most telling is that the same line on my phone, running GingerSnap, is a reddish-orange color - in accordance with the rest of the reddish-orange theme for that ROM. Lol

[APP] GalacticNight -- night mode for rooted E4GT

I made a simple open source nightmode app for rooted E4GTs that turns the screen to red and black, to preserve night vision. I've only tried it on EL29. Whether it works on other firmwares, or other Samsung phones, depends on whether they use exactly the same /system/etc/mdnie* files.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
If you ran some screen adjustment app that modified your mdnie* files, GalacticNight will refuse to start.
There are also options for green and black, black and white, as well as reversed colors (e.g., if you want to browse the web at night, reversed BW might work better).
You also save some battery life in single-color night mode, because you don't turn on the other colors.
Yes, I know there is ChainFire3D, which is a great app, but this is better for nightmode. ChainFire3D does nightmode by simply dropping the green and blue colors. That way of doing things can make some things invisible (e.g., some things in the UI may be pure green, and then they'll turn black). GalacticNight, instead, properly converts RGB colors to luminosities, and then sets the red (or green or white) intensity according to the luminosity.
GalacticNight manipulates the /system/etc/mdnie* files and should not have any more impact on performance than, say, using the Movie color profile in the standard settings.
If something goes wrong, you may need to go in with adb and copy the backed up mdnie* files from /sdcard/GalacticNight_backup

Yup, that was perfect, thank you. I didn't realize that busybox's mount formats the list of partitions a bit differently. I just posted 0.02 which fixes the problem your log showed. Of course, there could be other problems.
I updated to 0.03. Don't know how compatible it will be, but now it does things quite differently (it sets up a link from /system/etc/mdnie*dynamic_mode to files in /sdcard, so it doesn't need to touch /system when you change colors) and adds a new sepia mode which changes the background to sepia (same shade as Kindle app uses).
Looks like one problem is that this stuff has been seriously changed in ICS while I only have GB. Looking at ICS source code (for the I9100, but I am hoping it's the same here), there is a control file called "tunning" (yes, "nn") somewhere on the device (maybe in /sys/class/mdnie/?) that controls color tuning files. Can anybody check if they have such a file?
here ya go...this is from cm9
but it seems to just be blank??
Thanks, it's actually a control file. When you copy it it should be empty when you have no tuning file.
If you want to try to help with further development, I posted instructions in this thread on what would help next. It's hard to develop for an OS version I don't have, but I really don't want to go to ICS on my device.
For the daring user, I made a version of GalacticNight for ICS. Not tested on any ICS device, but based on my understanding of the ICS mdnie driver source code. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Here it is. If you are daring enough to try it (I do think that if it screws up the display, a reboot should fix it, but I can't make any promises), I would be grateful for tests.
I would recommend first testing the Dynamic/Standard/Movie modes. Those are less likely to cause problems on your device.
If you have GB, you can try this version, too. I did test the GB version of the code. This version has a new screen mode called "No blue" which turns off blue pixels to save batteries, and modifies red and green to compensate. White turns to yellow. I've heard that blue light makes it harder to fall asleep, so this might be a good screen mode for use while reading yourself to sleep. I certainly felt like I got sleepy while using this mode last night.
Just tried the last update for ics. I'm on cm9 nightly 8/3 and it seems to be working fine

Excellent. I spent a couple of hours adding S3 support since then. Could you try the current version to make sure I didn't break the S2 ICS support. I hope it will all work on S2 (GB and ICS), S3, Note (completely untested) and maybe even the 7.7 Tab (completely untested).
Also, while you're testing, I'd like to find out if the color mode survives turning the screen off and on. (It doesn't on the S3.)
On my S2 it returns to normal after screen turns off.
Still an awesome app though. With the way you have the interface it is so simple and quick to change colors, having to reapply after screen off is not much of an issue for me.
Thanks for building this app. Great job!
Forgot to add.. I am on CM9.

Done in 0.11. If anybody is annoyed by too many options, press MENU, Settings, and then you can select which color mode buttons are showing.

Screen flicker while typing.

Note: I searched forum for screen flicker issue, but it wouldn't let me reply to the thread for some reason, so I'm creating a new one here.
Phone : Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-i747m, ICS, not rooted.
Hi guys
I noticed when I'm typing a message or email, the screen would flicker sometimes, its so quick that if you blink you'll miss it, I know I'm being picky about it because its an expensive phone. So I did some more tests on it, I thought it might be due to samsung keyboard so I installed third party keyboard and noticed flicker again, then I installed sms pro, still noticed flicker; noticed flicker in email app as well as gmail app. At this point I thought it might have something to do with the software(sending keyboard signals to the operating system?) since it only happens when I type. So I did another test, but this time in SMemo and I didn't notice any flicker, I was puzzled here, so I tested 5 times for straight 15 minutes straight, no flicker.
I noticed that in all the apps I tested except SMemo there was something in common - traditional "textbox" object, whenever I typed in a typical textbox, I noticed flicker. So I downloaded few note taking applications which were using typical textbox and non-typical textbox(not sure how many different text objects are there in android, I haven't started android app development yet.) so I noticed flicker in apps with typical textbox, and didn't with non-typical textbox.
So I was wondering if you guys can do a similar test on your phone to confirm whether the flickering exists on your phone or not. I'll be relieved to know that I'm not the only one with this flickering issue, and hopefully Jelly Bean update will fix it.
To reproduce, just open a messaging app and start tapping on the letters from Q to M one by one.
Side Note: I did send the phone for repair in case it was a hardware issue, they couldn't reproduce the issue for some reason, reloaded the firmware and sent it back to me. sigh
tldr: Screen flickers when typing in any other app except SMemo.
You didn't search very hard, or you would know that the flickering is a known issue. That can be fixed by either raising your minimum clock speed to around 384mhz, remove your under volt settings, and disable hw overlays in dev settings.

Undervolting requires a kernel that supports it as well ad an app to control the voltage of the CPU. While the ktoonsez kernel does support undervolting, you stated you didn't know how to change the settings. I am assuming you never undervolted your CPU.
Are you using ktoonsez's newest kernel? His older kernels were undervolted and did not have stock settings

Crap, I just made an ass of myself, thought you said you had different kernel.
Sorry bud, haven't heard of the screen flickering issue on completely stock phone.
Hmmm...well, I don't have this issue.
But, I know the power saving adjusts the refresh rate: try disabling that if it's enabled.
Also, you didn't change any settings in developer options, did you? Like show screen updates?
What apps do you have installed? I know my brightness adjustment app did funky things with my screen when I first installed it.
Or did this happen right when you got the phone?
I don't know know a lot about backing up, but you could reset your phone and see if it still happened?

I already tried disabling power saving, the frequency of screen flicker reduced but it still flickers.
None of the setting is enabled in developer options.
I dont have lot of apps installed, may be one or two, texting app and google chrome and other apps which already came with the phone.
I already tried resetting to factory settings, but that too didnt solve the problem.
It doesnt flicker when I type in SMemo, but it does in other apps, this is the thing which I dont understand.

Same thing is happening to me, some help would be greatly appreciated.
so no one else is having this issue?

Help: Stuck on low brightness

My friend gave me his One V as we were walking to class and he told me that his display was stuck on low brightness. I literally had to cup my hand over his display to see anything.
He asked me if I could fix it (as I have a slight reputation at my school of being the tech nerd) and I said that I might be able to. The first and only thing I could do was factory reset. He informs me that the problem still remains and I really want to help him get it fixed. Pretty much identical to the issue here: http://androidforums.com/htc-one-v/593557-htc-one-v-stuck-low-brightness.html
He can move the slider but it won't change the brightness.
What ROM is he using? Did you check light level settings from system>display>automatic backlight>custom dim? I realize a restore should have fixed that but is the only thing I can think of. If custom dim settings are set below 10 its almost impossible to see the screen. I think default is 18 or 20.

[Q] Vibration stregth

Hey all.
Got my One today and really like it.
However, the vibrations is WAAY too strong and it louder than the ringtone.
How do I dial it down a bit?
Personally I find this to be a problem with all HTC phones. I had two M7's. The first was ridiculous, the second was toned down a little I suspect a different motor.
Anyway I guess you can change it with root/kernal settings.

yeah, had the same issue with my m7. Fixed that one with custom kernel.
However, that modified the vibration globally, including touch vibration and that ended up being barely felt.
EDIT:
also, can you please point where exactly would I find the file that deals with vibration in root?

I think you'll have to wait for custom kernals and GUI or an app for the kernal to adjust them to be honest. Don't think we'll see custom kernals till april.
