I like my text quite small on my device, I've set the system font to small and pinched out all the way in the messaging app so have the smallest font possible but it's still quite large, anyway enough context the weird thing I've been experiencing both before the update and since is that occasionally sense crashes and when I go into the messaging app after the crash the font suddenly becomes very small. However after a restart it goes back to normal small. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and more to the point if it's possible to have the text at the size after the sense crash permanently. (Attached screenshots should aid my somewhat handwavey explaination)
Also the font size seems to be very large in the email app, especially compared to my XE, tried all sorts but just can't seem to be able to zoom out. Another annoying thing is that I can't seem to find a way of getting the email app to just download images that are embedded in the emails automatically, I have to push a button each time. If anyone knows a way to I'd love to know!
Also on a side, just got the 1.28 update and now I seem to be getting lag on Shadowgun and when youtubing 1080p vids through the browser. Anyone else having this issue specifically?

Hi there. Just received my HTC One X and it's a really nice phone!
One thing that really bothers me is the gigantic fonts!
I have set the font size to "small" in the settings but when I opened up apps like Email or Messaging, the font is still sooo big. I cannot zoom out
The font size in the email app is too big...Changing the font size in Mail Settings doesn't do anything at all. This and some other bug definitely should be fixed!
I think it is a shame that phone of this calibre can't render HTML e-mail readable...

Have the exact same problem with regards to Font don't want it that small all the time though, way too small! When I use the E-Mail app to reply it sends the font too big, utterly annoying!
BTW, I recommend pulling your screen shots and editing the number out otherwise you may receive spam

Thanks for the replies! Glad it's not just me, hopefully they fix the bug with the next update. The thing that I found odd was that the font changes after a sense crash :S.
Also thanks for the tip, I normally would but that number is just the number that came with the phone. Once I get my proper number ported over to the One X, that one will go dead so I wasn't to bothered
P.s I don't ordinarily text myself lyrics to Lionel Richie songs haha

I must say myself, I've never had Sense on this phone crash, although twice the boot sequence on my phone has messed up since updating to 1.28 it just seems to randomly happen to me, or maybe Sense does crash and I don't notice it.
There's an update hitting the UK soon (to un-branded devices) that might sort the problem out, albeit it stops Sense crashing anyway, since 1.28 it's certainly slower
Not a big fan of Lionel Richie, didn't know they was his lyrics, my bad

Would I sound like an idiot for asking what this is?
It gives you threaded sms like on the Palm Treos. So basically when you talk to someone it looks like a chat window like AIM or something, good stuff! I am downloading and installing now

My girlfriend and I installed it and we no longer have the left soft key that says SMS. How do we fix it?
I just installed it and there is one problem:
On my device there are like 1500 Messages and it's importing them in Groups of 10. After each group i have to restart to get the next 10.
Is there any way to import all SMS?

yeah, I had to remap the softkey too. I used SKTools to edit it.
@Shogunmark
Can you let us know what the differences are between this version and your last version of this app?
Any difference between this final and the beta?
Thanks

too sweet
i will be testing this on my trip tomorrow.
i gotta make more friend that text message, preferable of the female persuasion. =)
does this version still have problem of 'recbar.dll missing' when trying to record a sound?
yes, recbar.dll still missing... i forgot about that... but will work on that issue...
I took out the sms softkey cause it gets on my nerves i always have to remap that thing, i guess i could always make a quick cab to renable it...
the app still looks the same, but some things that have changed....
MMS send was boosted to 600k.
you can now send mp3's via mms.
if you have a message thread open and that person sends you a message it will now alert you.
thats about all that really comes to mind, im sure my testers that had this can come up with more...
nice. thanks you.
Checking it out now.
Great work.
Hopefully this works out good on the mogul.. im crossing my fingers lol. does it look similar to the palm threaded app?
So i'm guessing this is a upgrade. I had a problem with SMS thread when my phone all of a sudden stop receiving text because i guess some went into my old text format somehow and the others i don't know where they went. Any idea if that's been fixed?

Looks the same as the previous version. Unfortunately, the annoying 'soft keyboard overlapping the text entry area' problem still exists. I wonder if Palm will ever fix it ...

this is the actual palm threaded app, it replaces the sms inbox on your phone, and works very well... the messages get stored in a different file in their own format...
ON ANOTHER NOTE, A QUICK WARNING
IF YOU HAVE MESSAGES IN YOUR REGULAR SMS INBOX THESE WILL NOT BE CONVERTED OVER INTO THE THREADED APP.. I WOULD EVEN SUGGEST BACKING UP YOUR CURRENT SMS INBOX IN CASE YOU NEED TO REVERT BACK (ALSO SUGGEST DELETING ALL YOUR MESSAGES IN THE OEM SMS INBOX TO HELP ON STORAGE SPACE)

I have gone into the contacts and set my sim contacts as inactive, yet when I open the contact list when creating a new SMS, all my SIM contacts are there... this is really really annoying. I can not for the life of me figure out how to disable this.
I've had a G1 for the past 1.5 years, rooted and running custom roms, so I know this has to be a snake in the grass waiting to bite me. Can anyone lend a hand?

I cant stand how you can sync your facebook with only the contacts that are in your address book. But then when you go to text someone is shows everyone from facebook as a option to message. I just want it to show the people in my addess book. is there any way to do this. Have it sync just your contacts with facebook and not have everyone and their mother show up in the who to message list?
go into contacts and press the option menu, then view. disable the t-mobile one contacts too. because t-mobile keeps all ur contacts too...

Yes... the syncing on this phone is indeed weird and annoying.. it was cool at first seeing everything pool in and popup without entering any info.. then it went awire , so I hit the killswitch on the whole operation. I know this isn't an answer to the problem, but maybe u can do without syncing until the froyo update comes next week (wishful thinking) ? Or do a hard reset and resync everything over slowly

Handcent or Chomp. I prefer the former but have not used the latter much. For all new Android users reading this...please use androidtapp.com for reviewing apps. If they have reviewed the app, it is very thorough, including screen shots and an overall rating. This also gives you an idea of what the app can do, especially in comparison to a stock app so you don't have to frumpenuzzle with it yourself.

HI guys. This is soooo irritating and just don't know what to do. I assigned photos to my contacts from my photo albums but every time I turn my phone on the photos become blurry n horrible!! I then hav to add them all over again but only for them to blur up again afterwards :-(
I read about blurry contact icons but that was when synced with Google or Facebook contacts, I only add from my own gallery so why is this happening and is there a way round?
Also has anyone had the same problem?
This is such a basic feature & dies work properly.
Thanks

This has been discussed extensively on other threads.
Check out the complaints and annoyances with workarounds.
Basically Google sync is to blame because it stores the pictures in a low format resolution.
You need to create a phone contact and add the picture to that one, then link to the "google" contact.
Do you know where is the "photo" of the "Phone contact" stored?
In the SD-CARD?

it's the gmail-contact-sync fault.
either cap gmail from syncing your contacts or live with crappy pictures.

Hello, sorry if this has been discussed, but is it not actually more of a carrier issue?
I have synced my phone on my wireless at home and had good looking icons, however, once I've spent a day on 3G only, I notice the quality has dropped.
I had put this down to the fact, in my case, T-mobile proxy all images and reduce the quality for bandwidth purposes.
The best demonstration for this is using twidroid. Twidroid has the option of using SSL, meaning that t-mobile's proxies can't tell that it's an image and modify it. The difference between using SSL and not using it is drastic.
Digital blasphemy has page on this relating to AOL; same problem, different ISP.
The page is /aol.shtml
But I transferred the contacts from my old phone, so I'm a bit confused when people say its got to do with Google. Can someone elaborate plz?
All my contacts are Vcards that wer imported from SD card and saved on phone.
Thanks

Hi, I've just bumped into this thread while searching for the same problem, it wasn't very clear in others I've found.
It's well known that syncing your contacts with your gmail account results in semi-blurry / pixelated photos, which look very ugly especially while dialing in HTC dialer. This can be solved in a couple of ways, one is to disable contact sync.
Now I'm on plain Froyo (Defrost 2.1) and I've noticed that if you crop a photo to make the contact picture, if the photo has a high resolution and you crop a big enough rectangle, the photo becomes very pixelated when shown in the dialer. Oddly enough, contact photos which I've chosen and cropped with HTC Photos album, while on HTC rom, and which have been restored through titanium backup, are showing ok, so I'm guessing it's an issue with Stock Gallery not properly resizing images ? Anybody else experiencing the same ?
To reproduce - this happens (to me) in NON htc roms, with google contact sync disabled:
- create a contact
- add contact picture through Stock Gallery (the 3D view one)
- select a big picture (5Mpixel) and crop a good part of it, more than half, or most of it.
- call that contact and you should see the picture very pixelated / badly resized
I will assume that if it's a google OS, they will use the same policy regarding contact pictures. Because, in the end, it will save time in their servers when a sync is made.

Uhm I don't know, while this explanation could make sense, I have the impression that in fact the image is stored in a high resolution, but then, when resizing it smaller to make it fit into the tiny square when calling a person, the algorithm used doesn't make it's work well. If I crop a small part of the picture, the scaling occurs much better.
You actually mean it happens the same on your device ?
I have maybe understood what happens, since the photo is still pixelated even when opening it in another dialer or contact viewer.
Select contact photo -> Open Gallery -> Crop to desired size ->
Here is the problem, the Stock 3D gallery resizes the cropped section to the actual size that have to be stored in contact pictures (anybody knows the size ?), but does a horrible job in scaling down, especially if the original picture is very big.
Anybody can verify this ?

Nope i made all my contact photos within the gallery and they are just fine (sharp etc.). For me the problem was GSync which i disabled now. I know not everybody uses it here and still has the problems but for me everything is OK since disabling contact-sync.
Maybe everybody should have a look at the GoogleSync-Settings as well as the Exchange ones. In my case both accounts where enabled to sync the contacts with Google.

Lucky you, I have every sync disabled but can confirm that it's just the gallery that crops and resizes with bad quality scaling.
I have tried using astro to select the picture and while it doesn't allow you to select the cropping area, it doesn't scale badly.
Did you actually try to use a very big picture and crop a good part of it?
Also, are you on froyo or eclair?

I use the standard eclaire ROM (1.21.405). The photos i used were taken with the 5 MP Camera of my former HTC HD2 so i guess they are big enough? Havent tried it with Astro so far. Hmm it seems hard to figure out, what could be wrong/different between our Desire-Contact-Manager-Photo-Thingy...
That is weird, since it's not mentioned anywhere else or probably mixed up with the sync-contact issue. At this point I would think that it could be an issue with the froyo gallery or with this particular rom. I might try a nandroid backup and then install stock eclair to try it out.
Just to be sure, let me ask you one question: if you select the entire photo (or rather the square part that fits the rectangular picture) for one contact, then on calling it, does the photo look blurry or rather pixelated ? on mine it's very visible in curves, which become jagged. I'm just asking because probably most people crop to a smallish part of the picture, like the face, while I'm trying to include the whole photo
Thanks.
[EDIT] erm, you mean stock rom with HTC Sense ? Because my problem is with stock android froyo, without HTC Sense Gallery, but using stock android 3D gallery (the one by cooliris)
I've just tried to install a eclair cyanogen (ERE27) and even without restoring anything I have been able to repicate the same exact issue.
At this point I think most people don't notice this because you mainly crop pictures in order to take the face and not the whole picture itself.
Just to make this clear once more, this has nothing to do with blurry contact sync issue and it happens in HTC Sense-free roms (i.e. DeFrost, cyanogen)
If anybody can come up with a better alternative than using astro or resizing images in separate applications, please post it here.

Just to give you an idea i have attached an original pic and a screenshot with the caller-screen. It might seem (when you zoom in the caller-screen) that it looks a bit blurry but on the small screen of the desire it looks absolutely sharp. As said, i made this with the standard album and chose a quite big area of the original photo.
Cheers
Thank you, I see that you in fact have a HTC Rom, and I guess that's the difference, I use stock froyo, non sense Rom, so I don't have the nice HTC picture gallery which does a fine job.
for standard album I meany the 3d gallery, developed by cooliris which is stock in non HTC roms.
Thank you anyway for your effort

Yep and thank you for stating it clearly Didnt get it before, that HTC Sense is the cause. Didnt know, that Sense is integrated so deeply into the system that there are differences when setting up contact pictures just because of different album-applications.
Greets
The gallery and possibly the dialer are the only reason why I would return to a HTC Rom, along with very few other things.
Still I can't understand how they can overlook such things...
Greetings. After testing the water with a GNex for a week, I was so impressed with Android I locked myself with AT&T for another two years and bought an S3. It's been almost two weeks with the S3. There are issues that I'm willing to overlook for the overall package, but there are three issues that are completely driving me insane that I might return the S3 for. I tried to post this in the mega S3 annoyances thread but I couldn't.
1. The S3 is auto-adding every single misspelled words into the my word list. The only way I find to stop it is to turn off predictive text, which turns everything off including basic spell checking.
2. I copy and paste a lot in the email app. The left text selection handle is upside down, so I can't see where my text selection begins unless I place my left thumb nearly upside down on the screen. It is the same way in the browser, but it's less of an issue in the browser since it brings up the magnifying glass. In the Gmail app the text selection handles are the way they should be.
3. Getting and syncing new email in the email app is horribly slow. Typically it would sit there with the spinning circle for a minute (or longer) before new messages come in. Half the time it would look like it finished syncing but no new email is there, but I would have 3 new messages in my inbox. The other times I would read and reply and delete an email, but on my computer that email is still unread on the browser. This behavior is not consistent as there are times syncing is instant. Gmail does not have this problem. And somewhat related, sometimes the new email notification doesn't automatically clear up after I read a new email, this happens on Gmail as well.
I really love this phone, but these three issues are absolutely driving me insane and I'm ready to pack it up and return it. Please someone tell me these issues are because I don't know what I'm doing :crying:
1. Use any alternative keyboard - Swype, ICS, Swiftkey etc
2. Use alternative Email app, or forward all your email to Gmail account.
3. See 2.
Do quick reading in general - you'll find many interesting things.

When I was using stock keyboard it wouldn't add my words to the dictionary unless I swiped upward on the word that I wanted to add. If I just tapped on the word it would add it to the text but not to the dictionary. Just hitting space would use the predicted word.

Hitting space or selecting the word (misspelled or not) from the predictive text area will both add that word to the my word list. I kept wondering why some gibberish made its way into my composed messages, and one quick look in the my word list my jaw was on the floor.
Maybe I'll look at other keyboard as bravo suggested. But I'm still kind of in shock at this behavior - why would it auto add every misspelled word into the list? Why have a spell check at all
I personally uninstall Samsung keyboards from all their phones and use the aosp/aokp keyboard. Its much better IMO. As for email, I've never used a stock email app ever. I've used K9 pretty much since I got my Captivate. Backed it up with TiBu, moved it over to my S3, and everything just worked.

I just installed ICS Keyboard from the Play store. Wow it works so much better. The first thing that I noticed when I got the S3 was the lag on the keyboard compared to the GNex. With the ICS keyboard on the S3 it feels exactly like it on the GNex. All the more shocking how the Samsung keyboard can be so horrendous. However, this is a security hole as the keyboard naturally captures every single keystroke. I'm not comfortable with the idea of installing a keyboard from an unknown source.
With the stock Samsung keyboard, is it *supposed* to auto-add every misspelled word in the my word list? If it is then what is the point of having spell check

I can't stand Samsung keyboards. One of my least favorite "features" of touch wiz. Something like swift key is just so much better I can't believe people use the stock keyboard. Hell, the JB keyboard is excellent, and Samsung goes out of their way to remove it.

All keyboards capture your keystrokes. That's what they are for.
Also, just about everybody uses third party keyboards because the manufacturer keyboards suck. SwiftKey, Swype, perfect keyboard, and 8pen are some of the common ones.
On to the other issues, use a third party email app. I use K9. Just don't forget to disable sync and notifications from the stock email app.
Just about everybody uses third party email clients too.
Finally, try using different browsers and sms apps. Try dolphin or chrome for browser and handcent or go sms for texts. Good luck to you.

Hmm, every-time I would try to type "ya" it would come up with something else and if I hit space or on "ya" the next time it would do the same thing until I finally tried swiping up on the word I wanted to store and it worked.
SwiftKey is the best keyboard around you should try that.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions everyone.
My problem with the very slow Yahoo mail syncing appears to be ONLY on my main Yahoo email account. I tried another Yahoo account as well as a new outlook.com address on it and the syncing is immediate. So problem solved, I'll likely be switching over to the new Outlook.com service.
So issues 1 and 3 are solved/worked-around, that leaves #2 with the upside down text selection handle. I've attached a screen shot to show you what I mean. I tried K9 as suggested and yes the handles are as they should, not upside down like the stock email app. What is up with that Samsung :silly:
I am still dumbfounded as to how/why the default Samsung keyboard adds every misspelled word into the word list. This is with all factory default settings, no settings were messed with.
Honestly I'm a huge fan of the ICS keyboard. Here is the APK pulled directly from the GNex. Simple, functional, clean. Just move this apk to the phone and install. You will need to go into settings and check to allow installation of unknown applications since this is not coming from the market. Enjoy.

Like stated all your issues are with the software not the phone. Get a different app. This is why people stick with iPhone. It's just easier

I just tried it again, just now, just to confirm I'm not hallucinating. As soon as I press space that word is added into the my word list. I now have a bunch of dkdk dkdkdk dkdkdkdk in there after the previously emptied my word list.
On the Gnex with the stock keyboard, the only way it will add a word is to press that word in the area above the keyboard, then it will prompt touch again to save. If I don't touch it again it and just press space it doesn't add it.

Yes absolutely. The software matters as much if not more than the hardware itself. I stuck with iPhone for the past 3 years because no Android versions or devices had the smoothness in the UI that I demand. Believe me I have no love for Apple or any particular brand; I spend my money on the devices that work for me, simple as that. Now that Android has matched the smooth UI experience, I dumped the iphone real fast. The GNex running Jelly Bean feels smoother and faster than the S3, goes to show software matters more.
Am I blind, or did they actually leave out contact specific notification tones option they've always had? Took the Oreo update last night and noticed the one person I want a different tone on changed to the default tone and there's no option under edit contact page. Kinda bummed about that and definitely feel like the phone isn't as snappy as it was on 7.1.
Same thing here.. I looked around on a few sites and notice a few threads.. the idiots have seemed to removed the option. There are a few other chat programs that do it... I also am very pissed at this moved.. Reluctantly I moved to the Verizon Messenger + app. It does allow you to assign specific tones. I hated the interface but once you customize it ..it is ok... I was just so use to the stock android messenger.. and now this bulls**T. Maybe they will bring it back in the next update...

I hope so too. Is your phone noticably slower? Many of my apps take 3-4 times longer to open and a few like my adt app and Chase app take 5-10 seconds to load the login screen.
