I have gone into the contacts and set my sim contacts as inactive, yet when I open the contact list when creating a new SMS, all my SIM contacts are there... this is really really annoying. I can not for the life of me figure out how to disable this.
I've had a G1 for the past 1.5 years, rooted and running custom roms, so I know this has to be a snake in the grass waiting to bite me. Can anyone lend a hand?
Sorry if this is a bit hard to follow, long day
And yes, I have searched.. again, I know this is probably right in front of my face.
same problem here hopefully gets fixed in and update
same crap here another two annoyances from the stock sms app is no led and if text are sent in the same minute they get outta order
I cant stand how you can sync your facebook with only the contacts that are in your address book. But then when you go to text someone is shows everyone from facebook as a option to message. I just want it to show the people in my addess book. is there any way to do this. Have it sync just your contacts with facebook and not have everyone and their mother show up in the who to message list?
go into contacts and press the option menu, then view. disable the t-mobile one contacts too. because t-mobile keeps all ur contacts too...
i had a similar problem, hope this help tho...

it still ends up coming up when you search for the name in the sms app or other apps thats just to clear it from the phone app
This phone handles syncing strange. I cant wait till its rooted so i can put a Cyanogen rom on it. Even when i delete all the tomobile contacts. It finds a way of bringing them back.

This, 1000000000 times this. If I turn off veiwing facebook for mytouch contacts in the address book it still shows 100000 people form facebook in the sms part when i go to send a new message.
Yes... the syncing on this phone is indeed weird and annoying.. it was cool at first seeing everything pool in and popup without entering any info.. then it went awire , so I hit the killswitch on the whole operation. I know this isn't an answer to the problem, but maybe u can do without syncing until the froyo update comes next week (wishful thinking) ? Or do a hard reset and resync everything over slowly
No way I could find to not see all your contacts as is described in post #1. Dowload a full-featured sms app.

Handcent or Chomp. I prefer the former but have not used the latter much. For all new Android users reading this...please use androidtapp.com for reviewing apps. If they have reviewed the app, it is very thorough, including screen shots and an overall rating. This also gives you an idea of what the app can do, especially in comparison to a stock app so you don't have to frumpenuzzle with it yourself.
Just a word on handcent. I can not stand the way it looks. Its a blatent iphone look-a-like

Switch the skin to the Hero skin.. I forgot it even came imitating the iphone since I always had it with the hero skin on my G1. When I installed it on the slide I was like aww wtf haha. I also have it with no bubbles or or handcent type bubbles.

Hey there,
I just unpacked my T-Mobile USA Vibrant (modified Galaxy S). I love the phone, but as always, there are things that I think are missing. So I played around a little bit with it and one thing kept bothering me.
The phone integrates all my Facebook contacts, which is great. But I think it would be a slick feature if you could actually send them a message directly from the contact list. As of now, I have to go into a browser or use the FB app to send messages and I think it would be a lot more convenient to just go into the contact and send a message from there (like a text basically).
Does anybody now if there is an app or some piece of software that can help me out here? If not, do you even think it is possible to do it? I am not a developer, but I can imagine there are some issues, cause as far as I know Samsung didn't open there UI code for developers yet (or showed any intention of doing it).
So I am excited what you guys think of that and hope there is a solution somewhere out there
Phill
edit: I just saw there is a specific Vibrant forum. If the admins would like to put this post in the right place I would appreciate it. However, I think the issue is omnipresent among all versions of the SGS.
This would be a fantastic mod for contacts I would think I don't know why someone hasn't done this previously. I think if we get the guy doing the standard froyo / eclair dialler / contacts mod to do this it will be extremely innovative.
Contacts -> Groups -> Facebook -> menu -> Send message -> Choose recipient
Wow, long path... Should work though.
hey yea that works. but it is kind of a long way dont you think? Thanks anyway, it got me one step closer What I think would be a tremendous improve is to add the fb msg feature directly to the first contact screen. You know, when you slide left on a contact for texting and right for calling. If there is no number available but a fb contact it should automatically go to the fb messaging.
I found this post on WP Central from a user by the name of "StrkerGT" and I have to agree with his findings and needs.
StrykerGt:
I jumped on the wagon on November 8 and got the Samsung Focus. I sold my iPhone 4 and I decided to keep it knowing that there are a lot of things missing on this OS but I know (if Microsoft really cares) will fix as soon as possible… Here is my list on the things that I consider missing in the telephone. I put them in order of FIX THIS NOW!!! to what I like in the future.
FIX THIS NOW!!!!!!!
• Visual Voicemail – Whoever decided to release the OS to the market without this should get fired right now! Come on Microsoft it is 2010 (almost 2011) this feature alone makes the phone look outdated. Please fix this a.s.a.p. I love to show off the telephone until someone asks to see the vm. This is inexcusable on this type of smartphone. Shame on you Microsoft!
• Global Address List - we have an Exchange Server 2003 (We have plans to upgrade to 2010 next year) in my company and it’s a pain to look for the contacts. Try to tell your boss about how awesome is the Windows Phone 7 OS and then tell him that in order to access the contacts on the GAL he has to put the address manually! This is something like the Visual Voice that has to be fixed now!
• HTML 5 – When I noticed that Microsoft put an already obsolete version of IE on the new Windows Phone 7 software without support for HTML 5 I said like in the WP7 ads, “Really?!” How come Microsoft that is telling everywhere that they are committed to HTML5 didn’t include it on the WP7 OS. Again, Microsoft, Really?!
• VPN Support - again come on!
• Marketplace Search – Hey Microsoft how about this, on the Marketplace put an option in Bing to filter what you want like apps, music etc. I hate to do a search for an app and get a bunch of other stuff like album, artist, song etc. The way you do it on the games hub is excellent please do the same in the Zune hub. I don’t go to the Zune hub to look for apps.
• Some kind of multi-tasking is much needed on this telephone Microsoft, get to work on this.
• SkyDrive Access I love the Skydrive concept but is completely ridiculous that I can put the files on the cloud but there is no way to access my documents directly on the phone. Something like Dropbox would be great.
• A favorite list for your contacts is a must, I really like the way this phone organize the contacts, but you always have that special list with contact you use more like family, friends etc. I don’t like to scroll to several work and business contacts to get what I need.
• Back Up/Restore – Please do something quick about this, there is no way to back up your settings, saved games, outlook configuration (certificates) downloaded apps etc. You have to re-download and re-configure everything every time that you reset your phone.
• Save Camera settings – It’s absurd to set everything every time that you use the camera. I feel like I have to put a flash bulb every time that I use the camera.
The things I want to see soon:
• I noticed that the telephone only vibrate once when you get a phone call. This is not good Microsoft. It should do both in case you have your telephone in the pocket or in a place with too much ambient noise.
• I’ll like to see the battery percentage on the notification bar. (I know the telephone already shows that information through one of the hacks but it will be great if I can see it easily.)
• Easier way to find the IP and MAC address. Again, (I know the telephone already shows that information through one of the hacks but it will be great if I can see it easily.)
• Add vibration to the Alarms
• Disable keys when playing games or at least pop a menu asking if you want to quit the app like the Facebook app.
• Run downloaded app directly from Marketplace
• Open file from any applications - example, open PDF files from Homepipe
• Unified Inbox or a mail Hub
• IE Address Bar in landscape mode
• Answer phone call when swipe up the lock screen
• Drop-Down notifications
• Outlook notifications (notification bar at the top, i.e. like receiving text messages)
• Volumes controls for Music, Notifications, Games, Alarms, etc.
• Market Place updates need to show what the update changes are.
I think that’s all for now, I’m planning to keep this phone because I know that this platform has a lot of room to grow but there are some things that have to be addressed now to put this platform on par with what other are already offering.
wsantiagow, your list is interesting and I agree with the vast majority of your points.
Especially this one:

Mine works just fine. If you hit the search button in the People Hub you have an option to search the Exchange server. The same option appears when you're addressing an email message. We use Exchange 2007. Maybe it's 2003 that doesn't support it.

WiKi - "Visual voicemail is voice mail with a visual interface. Such an interface presents a list of messages for playback and may include a transcript of each message."
You may not notice anything special about it but try having a telephone that does not support it and you are trying to find a message from 100 voicemails. Non visual voicemail phones have to dial a number to get your messages and go one by one to find the one you are looking for.

Maybe it is a carrier feature because I don't have anything of the sort on my iPhone here. I can get a text message notifying me about who just left a voicemail and a number to tap and listen to the thing. Can't imagine when this wouldn't be enough. Rarely even have voicemail on - if I'm not available people text me, send emails, or use a gazillion of other methods to keep in touch.
Guess the love for answering machines is just a local US thing.

Are Windows phones 7 right now with this feature on other carriers? EU or in the US? If that true then I'll change the list and put the blame on AT&T. I just hate to have to dial a telephone number hear a recorded message with options, press key to hear the voicemail in sequencial order press more keys to delete o hear it again. This is ridiculous, its the same method of any cheap flip phone out there since the last 15 years. AT&T support this on the iPhone since day one so I don't see why they won't allow it for this telephones.

Should be preloaded on your HD2 if you still have the stock rom, otherwise you need to find a cab for Windows Mobile, however if you have Android on your HD2, then it should be in the market place under Visual Voicemail, has a magenta colored logo

Trust me, your life will only be better. Those who really need to tell you something or have you call back will easily find a way to communicate. Those who just waste your time won't do it.

$2.99 a month for this on Vzw ? I guess I'll stick with the old method.
After insurance, Data, text messages, taxes and all the other crap vzw charges me with...
I like my Focus but the iPhone 4 kicks it ass in every way except reception. I can't imagine Microsoft is sitting on it's collective hands doing nothing and hopefully there's an upgrade that's pretty inclusive of everything you've mentioned, hopefully it's soon and hopefully we don't get jerked around by the carriers again, as usual. Patience is a virtue, especially when you own the latest and barest. That having been said, however, with a little more than 2 weeks left to evaluate the Focus, I think I'm keeping it and selling the iPhone, the main reason being potential. The iPhone is close to running out of steam while WP7 has a huge amount of potential.

I note on the Facebook for Windows Phone Facebook page, they've promised a new version with "features that [we've] been asking for".
It seems it has gotten delayed, probably owing to the recent messages bug, but maybe - just maybe - this may support notifications through the OS or a live tile?
The notifications issue, along with support for FB chat, seems to be the biggest request on there, so we might be in luck.

Your point being?
Live tiles, or rather "at a glance" was the big selling point for WP7. Sure, you get "at a glance" information galore for the people pinned to start but not being notified about messages on FB is weak - should definitely have been in the app from day one. Not to mention they still need to sort out the scrolling issues.

need I remind you that fb push notifications didn't come till last august on android? Let's be real, android's FB before last summer was a piece of crap compared to the apple platform..and even then there were some bugs till fall of last year...and android's been around since 08...and it still doesn't go without bugs...with toasting or push notifications
I mean i admit the facebook xap is paltry and has a lot of issues in coding which should be corrected but I say give it time
I can't believe that the Microsoft-coded stuff (even Facebook app) wouldn't have Live Tiles or push support. That one surprises me more than anything on WP.
However- I never recall my iPhone not supporting Push and doing it well.
Android was certainly sketchy, even after running 2.3.
Right now my best "solution" seems to be as suggested and setting up email notifications.

My point is that this is not a mature OS and I think (hope lol) MS will add that feature in the future. There's a lot of things that could have been added from day one, but MS wanted to focus on the most important features and making sure they work perfectly before implementing them.

Android supports PUSH well. All of Google's services are pushed, and let's get real... Google didn't add C2DM (their PUSH service) until Android 2.2.
Facebook Chat is pushed on Android, and it's as fast as ever. I know because my Vibrant is going off everytime I'm having a Facebook Chat conversation in Widnows Live Messenger/Facebook.com . I also get all of my Facebook Notifications (Posts/Replies/Messages) really fast.
Flory on WP7 has fast Push/Toast/Live Tile notifications, but the application takes so long to load and/or resume that it's virtually useless. Since the first day I've installed it, I've never gotten it to load my contact list for GTalk or Facebook again... So I uninstalled...
I have my Facebook Background Sync interval (Both in the App, and in TouchWiz/SocialHub) set to 12 hours so I know it's not polling, BTW...
Right now my best "solution" seems to be as suggested and setting up email notifications.

The biggest issue I have is that it's clunky, waste data and battery life (downloading emails uses way more battery power than getting a Push Notification) and is simply impractical for people with busy Social Networks. Do you REALLY want 30+ Facebook emails a day? 1 Hour or more less battery life (these smartphones are already working overtime trying to provide decent battery life)? People with low data plans won't want to do that, either...
Also, on other platforms you get to set different Notification Ringtones for Different Applications, which let you know whether or not you need to even bother looking at the phone when something comes in.
Microsoft needs to implement this.
For me, personally, the Push Notifications isn't that big of an issue (Toast), but a Live Ticker on People Tile would be good.
The biggest issue is that People Hub is a gimmick. It's nothing but a glorified RSS feed for social networks. It doesn't support Facebook Messaging or any of that, only posting and replying... That's why if you are a Facebook user you still need the Facebook application installed on your phone. People Hub barely passes for an alternative, if it does at all... It is too functionally thin to be truly useful and the fact that it doesn't update its information in the background makes it not really worth using over the Facebook application which does much more and has a better user experience.
WP7 has really good voice recognition (at least for English) and Bing is good now, so there's hardly a need to open the People Hub when you can just "Call PersonX Mobile/Work/etc." and the phone gets it done faster than you could if you went through the contact list (if it is of factorable length/size). Hell, the other day I just said "Call Pizza Hut" and it got the city right and everything. One less number in my contact list

Google didn't implement C2DM on Android until FroYo.
Facebook Getting Push on Android in August means they were very fast in implementing it after Google added C2DM, which destroys your argument/excuse/justification.
When you cut through the spin, Facebook was fast as hell at getting Push Notifications to Android, and Launched Facebook chat in that client as well.
I simply don't think they wanted to implement their own Push Solution, with 500+ million users... It't just too much. Better to use a native solution and and allow Android/iOS/WP7/BB users get their stuff pushed through Google/Apple/MS/RIM instead...

Facebook integration was, according to MS, a very important feature. Since the FB app is a MS commissioned app you would expect them to have taken full advantage of their, so called, killer features.
My point here isn't so much that it's a missing feature but rather that it's a missing feature which has all the necessary building blocks available for use - and they decided not to utilize them.
Maybe I'm wrong but I swear that WeatherBug Live Tile is updating itself. I'm going to consciously not open it and see if it updates again this morning. If this is true: why can't other apps do this?
As far as the people hub, I don't use it much. Alot of it is as I've already said... None of the apps cache data. That sucks. These apps should be able to poll and cache in the background, but they don't. The People Hub is one such app. I might as well use the Facebook app.
I can see the People Hub having some use but as you said, it seems more like a replacement to Facebook... And unless it has the full functionality of the Facebook app, why use it?
I also agree with your statements on Flory. It never loads my contact list. Maybe I'm not patient enough- but it doesn't even matter... If it takes more than 15 seconds to load it, it's useless.
I must say one thing I miss from Custom ROMs... Headphone amp. I listen to a podcast that, when I'm driving 75mph- you can't freaking hear it with the volume on the radio and phone all the way up. On a Custom ROM I had a headphone amp that I was able to crank it up and hear it with plenty of extra volume. I sorely miss this.
A question... How do I voice dial/search? I realize if I go into the search- I can hit the mic button and do it from there. However from the main screen, holding search does nothing. ????????????
Also... On large contact lists, how do I scroll to say, the M's? I cannot figure this out at all. On Android/iPhone you have a alphabet on the right and you slide your finger down it to the letter you want.
Hey guys, right now im loving mango, but one thing that annoys me is how I don't get toast notifications from the ME tile. I think its great how it updates and tells you of you have a notification, but I think it would be great if there were toasts so you didn't have to open your phone to check. I know you can use the fb app to give you toasts, but that's pretty buggy for me and never really even gives me them
Sent from my 7 Trophy using Board Express
Toasts are fairly useless as they are now, as they buzz your phone and make an audio sound - and then disappear forever.
We need a notification tray before all 3rd party and built in apps can start using toasts properly. But unlikely this will happen before Windows Phone 8.
yeah, well that would be a good longterm goal. but I still think it would be good so if im just walking around out and about I get a little buzz if I have a new notification. I cant believe that after all this time MS still cant get their FB app in order...
Yeh I agree and I'd like it too.
That type of notifications is what makes Blackberrys (aka "Crackberry") so addictive - the users seem to love the phone always buzzing, constantly giving them social media and email updates.
yeah haha, because I really like to keep up to date with whats happening and I couldnt quite understand why they didnt at least put an option for toasts. Or maybe add an optional facebook counter (or any of the other integrated social networks) next to the texts and email ones.
