[Q] Cannot access bootloader - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a replacement EVO (The white one) because my charging port went bad. I'm trying to decide which method I need to use to root, but can't access bootloader.
I turn off the device then hold the volume down button, then press and hold the power button, but for some reason I don't enter the bootloader screen. Thoughts?
Android -- 2.3.5
Baseband -- 2.15.00.12.19
Build/Software -- 4.67.651.3
PRI -- 2.33_003

I pulled the battery and tried again, works now!

Turn off you phone and then take the battery out. Then put battery back in and hold volume down while pressing power until bootloader screen comes up.
Since you evo has the 4.67 update, you bootloader is 2.18 so you have to use this method (thanks Captain Throwback)

Edit: You beat me to it.

Heh, thanks. You actually helped me. I think i'll just use the HTCDEV.com method to unlock bootloader. I don't see any reason why I would need S-OFF, do you?

You would need it to update your radio, if they ever update the evo again. They might be other reasons that I don't know.

Since you want to achieve root access on your phone, I would suggest "go big or go home" meaning if you are gonna do it, do it all the way. ^^^ Just follow the captain throwback method posted above ^^^

stock device, can I RUU to older updates?

Here's my question. My friend's brother attempted to root his stock Evo using simpleroot instructions I sent my friend 4-5 months ago (pre-2.2) without knowing that simpleroot isn't supported. His phone is now borked. When he tries to load into bootloader, he gets an error (not sure which one), but his phone will boot into android.
What I'm wondering is this: As of yesterday, his phone was updated and current as per sprint and the update commands in the system menus... Can he flash back to an older stock rom via RUU (such as this one) without causing other problems? If my understanding is correct, the latest sprint updates aren't yet rootable, right?
Any help on this issue?
Thanks

No, you can not run an older ruu. If he updated to today or yesterdays update hes stuck. If he is on HBOOT 2.02 he can flash the 3.30.651.3 ruu or ths 3.70.651.1 but you can not ruu further back.

Yes, they're both rootable.
S-ON vs S-OFF; is just basically a security parameter that's being locked/unlocked. This allows for PC36IMG's files to be flashed via the bootloader without having to use or have authenticated signature keys from Google.
Basically, if you ever accept an OTA and it flashes and removes your recovery (CWM or Amon_RA); then you have no way of flashing custom roms/mods, etc... however with S-OFF, you have the ability to get your recovery back and set yourself back to root if need be.
Essentially, S-OFF allows for another method of flashing stuff to the phone besides just using the CWM or Amon_RA recoveries.
Hboot versions however can affect S-OFF; so it's important that if there is a new OTA that you always hold off, until a developer can validate that the hboot can be exploited and that the OTA can be rooted.

1. 2.02 is rootable 2.10 is not and is the newest one.
2.0 S-ON means you can not flash roms s-off means you can. It is the security of the phone kind of.
If you can not get into bootloader then you can try running the oldest ruu and then the next. It wont hurt the phone at all (I just did it today) it will just give you an error and reboot the phone.

To see if you're S-OFF or S-ON; you can boot your phone into bootloader mode.
To do this:
1. Power down the phone
2. Hold the Volume Down + Power button
3. You'll see a white screen with three little Androids
4. Read the very top of the screen; should tell you if you are S-ON or S-OFF.
You can reboot afterwards.
And yes, you can switch from the S-ON to S-OFF and vise versa, though I don't see why you would want to do the latter.

I apologize to the both of you guys; I was under the impression that 2.10 was S-OFF, apparently testing is still being done. For now, looks like you'll have to sit tight. Sorry guys.

However it has been verified that if you were S-OFF on 2.02 you can install the OTA and you will end up with HBOOT 2.10 with S-OFF.

There actually is a way to downgrade without rooting, all you need to do is flash the mtd-eng.img file to your misc partition as explained in toast's rooting part 2 thread. After you do that it will let you flash any ruu that is compatible with your phone

[Q]How to downgrade my DZ after flashed PC10IMG_Vision_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.13.531

Help please!
I was always struggling, since this morning, to try to downgrade my DZ after flashed the most latest official ROM for T-mobile G2, "PC10IMG_Vision_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.13.531.8_Radio_12.52.60.25_26.08.04.30_M3_release_188635_signed.zip".
However, just cannot find the solution. Please help!
1) You will need to be more specific, what step are you stuck at, and how are you stuck? Are you still S-On?
2) For ROMs that are not rootable, the downgrade process involves going back to a rootable ROM. It negates the purpose of you flashing the new ROM to begin with. So flashing this ROM and downgrading was a complete waste of your time.
I thought you couldn't flash a g2 rom on a desire (official) ? But yes be more specific on what you doing
me too!

Two people have asked for more info from the OP, in order to help. You are doing much better. If you seriously want help, you're going to need to type more than 6 words. What steps you've tried to do, where you are stuck, etc.
i also have problem downgrading my g2
i used

kernel version 2.6.35.10-gb351ce5 [email protected] #1
build number 2.13.531.8 CL56018 release-keys
when i turn the phone on with volume down + power button
i see
vision pvt ship s-on
hboot-0.82.0008
microp-0425
radio-26.08.04.30_M3
eMMC-boot
when i select 'recovery'
i see the image of a phone with red triangle and exclamation mark in it
at this screen i cannot turn it off with the power button
so i have to take the battery off
i installed 'visionary+' tyring to get it temp rooted
when i first tap on 'temp root now' menu
it seems to be working but soon it goes to black screen
it doesnt go to total brick
because home button works so when i tap on it and it goes to home screen
but after that visionary+ app doesnt work
i mean nothing happens when i tap on the visionary+ app icon
after reboot these things repeat
because i cant get it rooted
pushing files with adb doesnt work
nor clockworkmod recovery
so could anyone help me here?
thx
Were you rooted and S-Off before flashing the official Gingerbread update?
A bunch of people still don't seem to be getting it. Don't flash the official ROM if you want to be rooted. If you are rooted and S-Off, there is a rooted version, and that is what you should have flashed (just flash from ROM Manager or Recovery):

Are you following the Wiki guide to downgrade?

Hey there christopher columbus when you get into recovery with triangle and thr ! Have your tried vol+ and power? That should take you to stock recovery, as well. Like anything there is no root for new hboot, and downgrade method is only choice though I haven't seen anyone tempted this yet,
Gfree method won't work either
visionary?? LOL http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025135
thank god visionary does not work on gingerbread.
downgrade is something that should be tried (on your risk, as always) - section 13 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
edit: section 13 is not applicable without s-off

[Q] HBOOT version

I'm embarrassed to ask this question as I feel like I really should know this... but I can't find the answer so here goes. Just got insurance replacement for EVO (usb port issues). Was running Synergy nightlies prior. New phone is of course 2.33 with 4.24 build. Thrilled that Revolutionary is now available as I could not stand going back to an unrooted phone.
Revolutionary is asking me if I have HBOOT 2.15 or 2.16. I don't know! I can't get the phone to go into the boot screen with power/volume down (don't you have to have root for this?). Only info I have is Baseband 2.15.00.05.02 and PRI is 2.15_003. This makes me think that HBOOT must be 2.15, but all threads that I can find re: rooting 4.24 with Revolutionary talk only about HBOOT 2.16.
Again, sorry if I am being totally stupid, but I can't find my answer and don't want to screw this up right out of the gate.
Thanks!
Nevermind. It turns out that it must not matter. You get the same beta key regardless of what you choose for HBOOT so I'm going on to root. Still curious though, if you can't get to your boot screen, how can you find out your boot version? Or, why wouldn't the boot screen come up for me? Oh well. On to root and all the goodness that it allows!
You have fastboot enabled (by default). You could've unchecked fastboot in settings, or after powering down the phone pulled the battery, put it back in, and then volume down + power.
For the record, your hboot version was 2.16. I think that running revolutionary changes the hboot to 6.16, but I may be wrong.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
THANK YOU!!!! This has been so infuriating! I've read about disabling fastboot in the past, but did not focus on it since I never had this problem. This is actually my daughter's phone. My phone has fastboot disabled, plus I always use Quikboot. I thought that maybe I'd been rooted so long that I must have forgotten all the fundamentals! Great, great thanks!

question regarding boot loader

my friend has an evo aswell and i kno on my evo and my wifes to access the bootloader you hold down the volume button and power button at the same time and it will come up and tell you hbot version and give you s-off or s-on info for some reason the other day i tried it on his phone and it just wouldnt give.now i know his phone is supposedly rooted due to the z4root app on his phone but my question is how do i find out the hboot version so i kno whether to root with unrevoked or with revolutionary ?
You have to uncheck the Fastboot option in settings:
Settings > Applications > Fastboot

download Quickboot from the market and boot into bootloader plus if you have z4 root running its 2.10 or older HBoot. He also only has temp root not full root.
Other method is shut phone off
Power phone on
Release power button
Hold down the down volume button
Success! - Fastboot

[Q] Won't root

Help! I've tried running Unrevoked 3.22 as suggested in these forums to no avail, tried using different recoveries that members have suggested, and nothing I do can root this phone.
For the longest time, I had the OTA ICS update available but the phone wouldn't reboot and update. After I did a factory reset, it updated. The battery died a few days ago, and its back to GB for some odd reason and doesn't even register that there is an update available. Regardless, I can't get the dang thing rooted. I'm used to Motorola development, so please be patient with me as I'm still not familiar with the HTC procedures. Thanks!
First off, what's happening? You say it won't root, but not saying how. As in, are you getting error messages, and if so, where?
What is your HBOOT version and are you S-ON or S-OFF? To get into HBOOT, completely turn off your phone. Power it on while holding VOL DOWN. Should now be in HBOOT.
This phone is easily rootable via the manufacturer. Setup adb, and then unlock your bootloader. Take a look at this site for help: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
