my friend has an evo aswell and i kno on my evo and my wifes to access the bootloader you hold down the volume button and power button at the same time and it will come up and tell you hbot version and give you s-off or s-on info for some reason the other day i tried it on his phone and it just wouldnt give.now i know his phone is supposedly rooted due to the z4root app on his phone but my question is how do i find out the hboot version so i kno whether to root with unrevoked or with revolutionary ?
You have to uncheck the Fastboot option in settings:
Settings > Applications > Fastboot

download Quickboot from the market and boot into bootloader plus if you have z4 root running its 2.10 or older HBoot. He also only has temp root not full root.
Other method is shut phone off
Power phone on
Release power button
Hold down the down volume button
Success! - Fastboot

I rooted my phone using the now close How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G Outdated with clockworkmod and then updated the to 3.30.651.2, now I am looking to remove root from the phone because I am selling it and the buyer does not want the phone rooted (warranty and such) and I have not been able to find a method that work. So after searching here and other forums I posted to ask hoping that someone had the answer to my dilemma. Can someone please point me in the right direction and help me restore the phone to factory i/e un-root the phone?
NOTE: I searched this forum as well as others looking for the answer with negative results.
You have to flash that p36100.zip or whatever its called ima get u the link

I used this method for a friend and it worked as it should.

Thanks I will try that one
Thanks but it didn't work, "error: Main Version is older!"
just in case my Hboot is 0.79.0000
Thread moved to Q&A.
First check to see if you are S-On or S-Off.
Go into bootloader. Power off > Hold volume down + hold the power button till you see a white screen with skateboarding androids.
Check at the top to see if it says S-On or S-off.
If it says S-off you have to first get it to say S-On.
Reboot the phone. Enable USB Debugging. Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.
Download Unrevoked's S-on tool here and transfer it to your SD Card.
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
Go into your recovery and flash that. Reboot and then go back into bootloader to make sure you have S-on now.
Then you want to run the Official RUU. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HTC SYNC INSTALLED AND USB DEBUGGING ON.
Then run the RUU. Follow the instructions.

This brought me back to full stock.
I did this yesterday and brought my phone in to get it replaced (cause I lost my RSA keys and hence 4G). Got my replacement in today. So it works for warranty.
Note that this is 3.29. 3.30 is a leaked ROM so for Sprint's purposes, 3.29 is the official release.
Help please!
I was always struggling, since this morning, to try to downgrade my DZ after flashed the most latest official ROM for T-mobile G2, "PC10IMG_Vision_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.13.531.8_Radio_12.52.60.25_26.08.04.30_M3_release_188635_signed.zip".
However, just cannot find the solution. Please help!
1) You will need to be more specific, what step are you stuck at, and how are you stuck? Are you still S-On?
2) For ROMs that are not rootable, the downgrade process involves going back to a rootable ROM. It negates the purpose of you flashing the new ROM to begin with. So flashing this ROM and downgrading was a complete waste of your time.
I thought you couldn't flash a g2 rom on a desire (official) ? But yes be more specific on what you doing
me too!

Two people have asked for more info from the OP, in order to help. You are doing much better. If you seriously want help, you're going to need to type more than 6 words. What steps you've tried to do, where you are stuck, etc.
i also have problem downgrading my g2
i used
PC10IMG_Vision_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.13.531.8_Radio_12.52.60.25_26.08.04.30_M3_release_188635_signed
under the menu setting > about phone
it says
baseband version 12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3
kernel version 2.6.35.10-gb351ce5 [email protected] #1
build number 2.13.531.8 CL56018 release-keys
when i turn the phone on with volume down + power button
i see
vision pvt ship s-on
hboot-0.82.0008
microp-0425
radio-26.08.04.30_M3
eMMC-boot
when i select 'recovery'
i see the image of a phone with red triangle and exclamation mark in it
at this screen i cannot turn it off with the power button
so i have to take the battery off
i installed 'visionary+' tyring to get it temp rooted
when i first tap on 'temp root now' menu
it seems to be working but soon it goes to black screen
it doesnt go to total brick
because home button works so when i tap on it and it goes to home screen
but after that visionary+ app doesnt work
i mean nothing happens when i tap on the visionary+ app icon
after reboot these things repeat
because i cant get it rooted
pushing files with adb doesnt work
nor clockworkmod recovery
so could anyone help me here?
thx
Were you rooted and S-Off before flashing the official Gingerbread update?
A bunch of people still don't seem to be getting it. Don't flash the official ROM if you want to be rooted. If you are rooted and S-Off, there is a rooted version, and that is what you should have flashed (just flash from ROM Manager or Recovery):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074852
Are you following the Wiki guide to downgrade?

Hey there christopher columbus when you get into recovery with triangle and thr ! Have your tried vol+ and power? That should take you to stock recovery, as well. Like anything there is no root for new hboot, and downgrade method is only choice though I haven't seen anyone tempted this yet,
Gfree method won't work either
visionary?? LOL http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025135
thank god visionary does not work on gingerbread.
downgrade is something that should be tried (on your risk, as always) - section 13 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
edit: section 13 is not applicable without s-off
Do I have to be on a sense Rom for htc sync to work? Still trying to figure out a way to unroot without the power button

You could put a PC36IMG of the RUU on the root of your SD card and boot into the bootloader with an app. When it scans, you choose yes with the volume up button and let it run. Then choose yes again to reboot. This will not give you s-off if you've ever used unrevoked or flashed unrevoked forever, but it will put you on the stock, not rooted rom. This is assuming that the power button isn't stuck, but just not functional.
The only other option that I can think of is to claim it lost and pay the $100 deductible if you have insurance, or go to a non-Sprint repair shop and have them look at it.
And yes, you have to be on a Sense rom to use HTC Sync.

I've never used bootloader so used to recovery etc. So I can download that stock file and do it all with the bootloader and volume button. I can honestly say i can't remember the name of the method i used. I've been rooted since August and hadn't looked back.
Also excuse my ignorance what is s off? Power button has been deemed dead by Sprint but they won't take it back until I get unrooted.

I know there were other methods back then that didn't use unrevoked, so you may be in the clear. S-off is security off, NAND unlocked. It essentially means that you are fully rooted. It is possible to flash roms etc while still s-on (or at least I've seen mention of it) but certain root actions will not work.
The bootloader is the white screen where you access recovery - you usually get there by holding volume down and the power button. Near the top it'll either say ship s-on or ship s-off. If you're s-on, then running the RUU through the bootloader will put you where you need to be.
You can get there through certain apps if you're already booted into the os. I think Quick Boot will do it, I know you can use Widgetsoid to make a reboot toggle, just choose "bootloader" or "choose on click" when making the widget. I believe the option is under "advanced".

I sure hope this works. I have an app that will get me to the white screen yes where I usually go to recovery. If is says "ships s-off" am I SOL? I guess before I go in and look I just want to see what the status is *cringe so scared* once i get into bootloader though it will do its thing without me having to use the power button as "enter." Should I just google for the PC36IMG file you mentioned?
**UPDATE**
I just went into bootloader to look at it says Supersonic [email protected] Ship S Off
I just got a replacement EVO (The white one) because my charging port went bad. I'm trying to decide which method I need to use to root, but can't access bootloader.
I turn off the device then hold the volume down button, then press and hold the power button, but for some reason I don't enter the bootloader screen. Thoughts?
Android -- 2.3.5
Baseband -- 2.15.00.12.19
Build/Software -- 4.67.651.3
PRI -- 2.33_003
I pulled the battery and tried again, works now!

Turn off you phone and then take the battery out. Then put battery back in and hold volume down while pressing power until bootloader screen comes up.
Since you evo has the 4.67 update, you bootloader is 2.18 so you have to use this method (thanks Captain Throwback)

Edit: You beat me to it.
Heh, thanks. You actually helped me. I think i'll just use the HTCDEV.com method to unlock bootloader. I don't see any reason why I would need S-OFF, do you?

You would need it to update your radio, if they ever update the evo again. They might be other reasons that I don't know.
Since you want to achieve root access on your phone, I would suggest "go big or go home" meaning if you are gonna do it, do it all the way. ^^^ Just follow the captain throwback method posted above ^^^
Please can someone show me how i can get s-off on a verizon droid incredible 2? I'm usin android 2.2.1. I can upgrade android...the device answer " web problem"...
i want to install clockworkMod recovery and cyanogenmod or an another rom...
Can someone help me?
You just need to flash the ruu for 2.3.3 and then you can run revolutionary.
Go here and download Gingerbread 2.3.3 firmware.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18873-ruu-htc-incredible-2-signed-ruus-pg32imgzip/
Download it to your sdcard and rename it PG32IMG.zip. Turn phone off, pull battery, re-insert battery, hold vol down and power to get to bootloader and it should recognize the update file and press vol up to flash.

No need to downgrade when he's on 2.2.1, just upgrade to 2.3.3 like sjpritch said and use Revolutionary.
