Running Linux natively? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey all,
I'm familiar with the process whereby you can run variants of Linux, usually Ubuntu, in a chroot environment then connect to it via VNC. But has anybody tried to port an ARM version over to our device yet? If not, why not? Is it not possible? Arch running on my GN would be a dream.

Find a way to install Gentoo on a phone and I will never stop laughing.

as if Debian ftw!
but yes people are trying to get ubuntu to work on the gnex

Running Backtrack 5 on mine.

I know ubuntu works and works seaminglessly well for the Nexus One through the use of a VNC and some other stuff.
I remember following this guide: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...29tLnpwd2Vic2l0ZXMudWJ1bnR1aW5zdGFsbHBhaWQiXQ..

As I said in the OP, I know you can do it this way. But is it possible to run it directly on the device?

Ah, well, if I'm not completely mistaken, I know the Ubuntu team is developing a standalone operating system for android devices, but I don't know when and if it will be completed.
As of now, though, I doubt there is anything standalone.

They did something like this for the Xoom, I'd love to see it on the Galaxy Nexus.

[Q] Ubuntu for Android on Galaxy Nexus?

I'm very interested in getting Ubuntu up and running on my Galaxy Nexus so I can move one step closer to having both my desktop computer and my phone in one device. Does anyone know about the possibility of Ubuntu for Android on the Galaxy Nexus? Or about timeframes? Thanks!

Does this work as a full desktop replacement, like Canonical demoed? If I plug it into my monitor via MHL, will it function properly as desktop Ubuntu? Thanks.

Well you connect to the GUI via a vince connection so its lagy compaired to what canonical demoed but I am working on native graphic accelerated GUI.
For now this is as pretty much good as you will get until they really release anyway

Thanks for the info. What exactly is a vince connection? Also, will I be able to use USB peripherals, like a mouse and keyboard?

[Project] Ubuntu Nexus [CDMA]

So I have decided to take on putting ubuntu on the galaxy nexus. I am using a reconstructed img based on the HD2's build. To Start i will be using the same methond to boot ubuntu nativly on the nexus s. So this thread is to keep people updated on whats going on. just so everyone knows since i am busy with other projects there will be no eta. Once finished i will start a dev thread under the Galaxy nexus CDMA Development section.
UBUNTU NEXUS
UPDATE Progress
Working on kernal and recompiling a boot.img
Also If anyone is willing to help please let me know Shoot me a PM. If your interested in testing the builds also PM me,

Good luck with this. I will be following even though I dont have any interest in having Ubuntu on my phone unless maybe in a dual boot function.
Well eventually thats what im shooting for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889433 <-- this is the thread for the hd2
but eventually once a stable build is created i want to have dual boot feature so.
Hoping the best for this with dual boot, thanks in advance for your efforts

This will be fully native right? As opposed to ones that use a vnc server/client?
Yes this will be fully native and evenually dual boot. Once a stable build is ready for release

Erm... "kernel"
why just because you can? i will follow this for knowledge but don't see the point ... isnt ubuntu making a moblie version of the os themselves with a possible hardware phone too? i dont think it really has a place ... never the less i wish you good luck
ubuntu would be best for tablets not phone imo
I'm not putting a desktop version of Ubuntu on the phones. And yes but its based on android GUI and android code. I am doing this because it becomes an option..... something different . And I had an hd2 the idea itself and the actual build was pretty interesting. But think about a mobile true Linux device. All the possabilities

Also I want to make point of this Ubuntu mobile OS will be similar to android with an effing unity interface. Personally I hate the unity interface. By porting Linux Ubuntu this opens the doors for things like idk for ex programming custom gui's. Ha aha if somebody wishes a true mobile hacking unit lol not that I support this fashion of hacking. But again its DIFFERENT. But all in due tine need to get through my exams

Can't wait to see development!!!!
If you need beta testers let me know! I'm more than happy to help with this project.
Awesome idea USB functionality I already incorporated and I will let everyone know on a beta

Also, provide kernel source and headers so if anyone who wants to build new modules/drivers it will be easier!
I would look at Backtrack-ARM too. I am running it in chroot but having native would be awesome! If we can find elite engineers to convert our broadcom wifi and make it monitor/injection working would be like the n900 but with way more power and bigger/better screen for mobile pentesting!

Multi boot options

I wish we can have multi boot options. There are just too many good Roms and restoring nandroid backup takes too long. What do you guys think about developing dual boot option for our Nexus? I wish devs take a look at this concept.

I imagine it runs well on the galaxy nexus due to the roms running off of the virtual sdcard which is really the internal storage. Is this correct?

From the accounts I've read, BootManager only works for ICS and previous on the gnex..
I am entertaining some options to multiboot this device. Might have already been done, but we got ubuntu one preview, android (of course [particularly jellybean & beyond] multi versions [MIUI, CyanogenMod, etc]), Open WebOS, possibly futures like B2G or Firefox OS & Tizen on the horizon..
and other devices multi-booting (Nexus 7 does).. so I think I might can throw something together possibly.

7 month old thread dude.

If you could run another mobile OS on the Galaxy Nexus, what would it be?

I thought this would be a fun thread.
Firefox OS is already becoming a reality, btw. Somebody has already started porting it to the Gnex here, but beware, it's a pre-alpha.

Well, that's the beauty of a Nexus, isn't it? You can flash so many different things with less problems than a non-nexus.

No, I get you, but that's not what I meant. If I wanted a windows os I would have bought a phone that already runs one. Same way, if it were possible to run android on iphone, I wouldn't buy iphone to do that. I would buy iphone to run ios, right?
Now, I do get that it's awesome to play around, have something different, impress your friends, etc, but I bought my phone to run android. that's me.

The reason I have a Nexus is that I want to run the latest version of Android. So, nothing.
I'd like to be able to try out windows phone, buy prob not as a daily driver. What I would like would be some sort of Ubuntu implementation where it ran both Ubuntu and android depending on whether it was docked or not.
I would want to stick to Android, but run it on Nokia hardware. No one comes close to their quality, albeit diminished as of late.

Web os or windows phone. Or Meego.
Definitely meego with a dalvik machine for android apps
I think Mozilla's B2G shows a lot of promise. I like the concept.

Tizen for sure. Meego's real time multitasking was awesome. Same with Maemo.
W8 could be nice, but for that I'd probably prefer getting a w8 phone, from my experience with HD2,dual booting was annoying.

There are several apps on the play store that add Ubuntu or Debian to the gnex. My favorite one was Debian Kit, which let you put either Debian or Ubuntu on your phone side by side with Android. I'm not sure if it works with Jellybean, though. Really nice to have mc, vim or joe, GCC, package management, X, etc available.
Well... in smartphones we don't have many choice... So I would say windows 8, no windows phone I mean PC windows..

I didn't know they had a mobile version. I am questioning, if it is possible to run the version used on a computer, on our phones?

So, you're wondering if a program designed and compiled for Windows and Mac OS, both of which are x86, will work on an ARM Android device? If you can't figure this out, you may want to trade in your phone for something a little less smart.
They do have a mobile app though, and if you're wondering about that, then why not test it out yourself? If you paid for Rosetta Stone because it said compatible with Android, and it isn't compatible, then you can complain to them until they fix it to work with Jelly Bean.
yep theres a $300 online version

No. I was interested if there was a mobile version that could be used on smartphones, specifically android jelly bean. I was not aware of an online version. Sincerely, that is good to know.
However, I was looking for something that would allow me to use the program without an internet connection similar to how they function on a PC. An app exist that is supposed to do something similar, but I am not getting the option to download onto my phone similar to if I tried to download flash which is no longer being supported.
Hopefully, this clarifies my post. Your response indicates that you were not understanding.
