Easiest way to get 200 DPI on ICS/FD26? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I haven't been experimenting with any of the ICS leaks lately, mostly because earlier seemed incompatible with LCD Density Modder Pro. Now that we're on FD26 is there any simple, straightforward way too get 200 with a functioning Play Store. I'm not a coder so I'd really like to avoid anything involving terminals or editing scripts.

Add a LCD density line in your build.prop

rom toolbox

** edit: well now that you guys answered the DPI question, he just needs the working compatible play store.
I'm sure he knows how to change the DP, guys. He is asking if their is a working play store that will show all apps. Try looking up the play store for different DPI's, OP. I've seen them somewhere, forgot where though.

What fonebone is asking is..
How do you switch density on ics (to 200, or whatever)? Everytime I've tried changing the build.prop (either manually or with an app) i get a bootloop on the opening Samsung logo.
[afaik, density hasn't worked on any ics leak, also doesn't work on cm9a3]

What you need for it to work is a modified phone.apk so it won't crash when you boot into the new dpi.
for cm9a3
there is this
https://hotfile.com/dl/153812628/17d0758/TabletUI_MOD_CM9.zip.html
You can flash that to enable both hacked phone.apk and tablet services.jar, or you can also just push the phone.apk only.

Density changes have worked for me on both Touchwiz and CM9 ICS. I change mine to 160 with Rom Toolbox and it works fine once I copy over the modified phone apk. If you're only going down to 200, then you don't even need the modified phone apk.

The easiest way to do all of this all at once is flash AoKP milestone5 from the mirror link with the modded phone & app store, you won't be sorry! The sickest setup you'll try..

Sweet, I was on 240 (stock) for a while, found I could lower to 190 without issues, that was nice, but I wanted more.. so I flashed modded phone apks got down to 160 and that was getting better too.. actually, 130+ is nice cause its the UI we are all familiar with on our phones but just smaller in size all around. Well.. I tried the tabletUI and haven't looked back since. Just the look of it being like a tablet on our phones is just sick to me.
So some are saying that the size of everything being so small is what keeps them from using the tUI as their daily, all you need to do is use 'big font' from the market and increase everything to something like 130, you will keep the tUI format but fonts will be easier to read..

changed dpi, have some questions

I changed the screen dpi to 200 but now miui launcher looks weird.
So I'm using adw launcher with 1 extra row and looks nice, however I like the way miui launcher functions, like when I install a app it immediately puts it on desktop, just like the iphone.
Is there any launcher that acts like this and also allows to change number of rows and columns?
this is miui default, folders and other widgets look even weirder

You change the LCD density string in build.prop to set it permanently, or use lcd density changer from the market to do a temp change.
You can use a tool called "Absolute System" to edit the build.prop easily.

changing the lcd density has the same same effect as changing the resolution on your pc monitor. the phone will fit more on the display, so smaller icons and text etc...
any of this apps are changing the phone dialer too ?.....???
None of the sammy aps like dialer change with DPI changes, everything looks smaller and a bit crap, you will either need to find a ROM with DPI changes built in for that or there might be a theme you can use maybe.
My theme is built for changed DPI (shameless plug)

Yes, TouchWiz doesn't play nice with DPI changes. Use Go Contacts (includes dialer) for dialer - I haven't found a MULTI-DPI camera replacement yet tho.

Changing LCD Density
Changing the density changes the whole phone - if you set density to a lower number everything will be smaller on the screen and then you can fit more items on the screen. A higher number will make things bigger and fit less.
An unfortunate side effect of changing DPI however is that quite a lot of apps don't like it and will force close when you try and open them. For example, I just set mine to 200dpi and Angry Birds FC's.
The Market is another app that seems to be fairly DPI sensitive, however in my case right now running CM7 nightly the Market is working fine at 200dpi.
Another effect can also be black bands around apps that are not written to scale to screen DPI but rather with hard coded sizes for LDPI/MDPI/HDPI.
Cheers!

like I said in my first post, I'm using ADW and it works fine with it, I was looking for a miui like launcher, with all the apps on desk and no app drawer, probably doesn't exist.
While I was on miui rom I didn't encounter problems with the apps I used, this goes from games to standard apps, like the market.
Now I'm on stock and I saw the dialer is small, but no problem otherwise, when I get called the slider works fine.
the advantage is it makes the screen seem like higher res, browser fits a lot more content, holding it next to a sensation it looks the same, one difference I encountered on sensation is a game megajump, doesn't fill out the screen while on sgs2 with dpi change it still does.
it probably looks so good because of the samoled + subpixel density stuff
It makes it look extremely hi-res. I can't, no, WON'T have my phone at stock DPI, ever.

Market fixed at 240 dpi with other LCD densities in build.prop

Hey guys, after a while I realized that quite a lot of people prefer lower than stock LCD densities on their phones. At first I thought it was stupid, until I tried it and now I can't go back to 240 without swearing because everything is too big.
My problem,as everyone else's,is with the Market not showing apps as compatible. So two days ago I stumbled upon this guide for modifying the Market.apk.I did everything the guy said to the letter(although I signed using Signapktik on my phone instead of SignApk),and it worked at first.I don't know how and why,but is stopped working after a while and it still doesn't work.I've modified more Market apk's,including the newest 3.5.15,but it still doesn't work.
Below is attached the latest one I made.I think,if someone can do something to help, many people will benefit from this.
Thanks in advance guys!
Bump!

Lol, is somebody else confirmed is working just for some time or for a long time? From which thread is that guide? This market issue is really, really a big pain for me. I will be glad to help you and other somewhat to fix this issue.

Yes,this thing with the Market is a pain in the butt. The guide was just what some guy in the Android Themes and Apps section followed to mod Market 3.4.6 .In his thread reports were the same.It worked for some time and then stopped.I think it didn't work for everyone though.
However,my knowledge on apk editing is less than minimal. So I hoped that someone more knowledgeable than me would take it from here.I tried and,for the time being, failed.Maybe I will try again tomorrow...
Turns out that there is a temporary solution to density problems with the market. We just have to follow a certain procedure. So,supposing we all want to lower our lcd density and not increase it,we should do the following in the given order(as LordClockan's IceColdSandwich rom says-it's based on AOKP I think):
i)Using whatever method you like(I prefer Root Explorer, but you can also do it via other apps or even adb) change ro.sf.lcd_density=240 in your build.prop to ro.sf.lcd_density=160.
ii)Reboot.
iii)Once booted,go to Settings>Applications>Application Management(Or whatever,my menus are Greek)>"All" tab and find Market/Google Play Store.Clear its data.
iv)Go back to your homescreen, open Market/Play store and hit accept in the prompt.
v)Then again, change your lcd density to whatever value you want.Mine is ro.sf.lcd_density=200 for example.
vi)Check if it works.I suggest searching for Mobile Odin in Play Store because it shows up as incompatible with non-normal densities. You can check with any app you know that is incompatible with low densities. If it works, you're okay.If it doesn't,repeat from step (i).
I found that,if not followed to the letter,it won't work,so don't skip any steps.I hope this helps until a permanent solution shows up.Unless this is a permanent solution after all...
I haven't tried the above method yet but this version of the market works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23336920
You'll need to make sure market updater is uninstalled but thanks for this, next flash I'll try this out.

Well,I'll make sure to give that a try next time I get trouble(almost sure I will ).Thanks
However, what makes the method I posted effective,is that it will work with any version of the Market, new or old.I for one am using latest 3.5.15 with no issues.
Can anybody help with the issue i am having in touchwiz. Changed the density to 200 and get following screen issue.

Well, yes: TouchWiz isn't designed to run on any resolution, so you're having this problem. The Email app and Dialer are smaller than normal - they're not handling other densities than 240. Strangely, Messaging works just fine.
Thanks. Oh well back to 240
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Why ? unless you have poor vision (which I can understand), everything looks much better at a higher density; you should see it on 160, it's like a shrunk tablet
Just get a better launcher (Apex Launcher or Go Launcher are both good) which can be adjusted for the new screen density and you're good to go ! perhaps get a new email app and a new dialer if their small size bothers you.
Tried launcher pro and it was fine. But the issue with email and dialer would annoy me.

You shouldn't have to uninstall the apk just to go back to 240. Just reset your dpi with ROM toolbox or in the build prop and reboot.

yep crashes outright and nasty it really don't like 240dpi I will have screen shots up shortly.
OK 240dpi is the way the Note II should have been shipped. you folks running Note II's no your not. your not running a Note II till you goto 240dpi and see the amazing difference in makes (unless you have soso eyesight then you might want to stay at 320 dpi but com eon 5.5" display !!!)
but alas some of the SAMSUNG specific phone apps are designed FOR this phone so there is no reason for samsung to make them "scalable" (lazy bums
so Bala_Gamer figured out how to "alter" them to display properly at 240dpi (which makes them prettier more usable and in some cases usable at all since some apps crash outright) these mods "fix" them so they work right and look right.
I am LOVING it.
Ok Screenies of everything but the dialer (I seem to have misplaced my dialer since installing exdialer .... using the S3 Dialer pics for now (its identical)

I'd do it but how do I get it to show the folders? I'm using 7-zip and it's not showing the folders inside
winrar opens the zip fine. there are two root folders. META-INF and mode
there is a zipalign file in the mode folder
I have ZERO skill at this so DO NOT apply this without a backup I may have done it wrong and may screw your phone !!! remember its a $700 phone
I unzipped it replaced the zipalign file and then zipped it back up again. I am assuming its that simple? (bala?)
try it and see what happens in twrp
All you have to do is replace the zipalign. I have been doing this to flash gsm note 2 mods constantly.

I unzipped it replaced the zipalign file and then zipped it back up again. I am assuming its that simple? (bala?)
try it and see what happens in twrp

Best DPI for Galaxy Note 2

I was wondering what is the best DPI for my Galaxy Note 2, I tried other people's suggestions but it didn't work for me so I was wondering how Google decided on their DPI. Considering they're in charge of Android they must know the optimal level so I used the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4 as reference:

So if Google designed a 5.5 inch screen device with 720x1280 resolution, it would most likely be at 270 DPI
I know this won't help a lot of you how it helped me but just thought I'd share it just on the hunch that it might at least help the 1% :silly:

My personal favorite is 240 which is 25% less than the standard 320. It is best if you could use the dpi per app mod if you are running a touch wiz based rom. I am personally on the aosp vallina rom and loving the customization. Some apps work better with a higher dpi like the one you use to scan for example a starbucks card and other like email work better at a lower dpi. With android you can customized your dpi per application.
I use 220 system wide, and make exceptions as needed.

I use 240 system wide only changes I needed to make were to contacts, camera, and calculator apps. Also the samsung keyboard didnt like the 240 dpi but there is a mod for that. I like the look at 240. Couldnt imagine going any lower.

I tried to change the dpi, but I like more original

I am using Liquid Smooth, Android 4.2.2, Matrix kernel overclocked to 2.0GHZ, at 182 dpi. I love it!! Its like having a tablet as a phone. Google Play shows completely different, gmail is in dual view mode, and everything just shows up so much clearer and fresher. I wouldn't go to 160 dpi as things are too small for me to tap on while I drive. 182 dpi is by far the best resolution to me.
Nice one!
I loved your idea but I would like to point out that you have disregarded the proportions by taking the average of the two devices. Mathematically speaking, If the display was ((4.7+7)/2) = 5.85 inches your calculation would be sound. But if you consider the proportions we get,
213+[(7-5.5)/(7-4.7)]*(320-213) --> Using the interpolation method (Never thought I would apply my statistics knowledge like this)
= 282.78 dpi
Though personal preferences may differ.
I love 182 dpi but I was curious I'm running touchwiz rom and using xposed. Is there something I can change the DPI on to get the status bar to not show up all small? Thanks!
