[Q] sdcard space not enough - HTC One X

i flashed some custom roms for several times. today i just noticed that theres only 1GB left in my sdcard. and all the files that i can find are just about 10GB. i have no idea what takes the rest. any solution pls? thx alot!

Not sure if this could apply to you but try to get a tool called diskusage to better understand what is happening it may well be dalvik cache space issue, another tool which can also help with clearing dalvik cache is link2sd once you frozen you can clear the dalvik cache for particular apps.

thx mate! what about wiping dalvik cache in recovery? will this work?

I've only cleared dalvik cache from apps I not longer used, so is best if others here can make more technical recommendations on this topic.

Sure you're not getting internal storage confused with phone storage in Settings?

I had this problem too the only way I could fix it was copying all of my data from the sdcard, formatting it and copying it all back.

What's the best way to format the 25GB partition?

Looks like i may have to do a reformat as well then.
I have 14ish Gig on my phone storage, yet only have a little over 5Gig left!?
6gig missing somewhere!
Tried looking using linda file manager.. can't find anything that big!

thats what i actually did. looking for better solution. it seems to have something to do with rom flashing. after formatting i flashed a rom again then almost 1GB is gone. btw im on ARHD 4.1 and used super wipe from ARHD thread before flashing.

Copying the data to my PC, reformatting, copying the data back worked for me too.
I had been playing around with various ROMs over the last week, and I would think that this has had something to do with it.

This happened to mine too. I already did what you have done and formatted the sd partition and i gained 3gb from 5gb to 8gb which was great but woke this morning to have lost another 1gb overnight. I thought i had solved it but obviously not. Hope this gets sorted soon.

Well if it does, then its still a problem even if i format the sdcard 'cause i wont stop flashing roms in the future. The missing space is gonna keep growing and lead to another format. And thats annoying

The problem is that after files deletion their space goes to the bad sectors - just run chkdsk to see this. Seems problem with internal SD driver or something like this

How many roms did you save on the SD card? That takes space. Plus how many nandroids have you saved? Each nandroid takes 1.2 gb space. So multiple nandroid back ups will take up a lot of space.

Also you can use storage analyser from play store to analyze what is using your storage

Where am I going wrong

Ok . Got s-off last night and partitioned my SD card using recovery console.
I have then flashed a custom cm7 hboot using Android flasher and then tried both insert coin and rcmix roms but still only getting about 120 mb free.
Can somebody advise where I am going wrong and possibly suggest what I should be using.
I basically want new ginger sense with lots of app space.
Thanks

That's normal (if I.remember well)
Sd space should not be shown, you only see the internal free space

Yes you do. The ext partition is there, you just can't see it. Your storage will decrease the more apps you put on because of the dalvik cache.

hmm can you clarify that a bit? as in, is seeing ~120mb of free space is normal?
I recently flashed the InsertCoin cm7 rom and see that i'm using ~160mb and have ~130mb free. I thought this is normal given that the hboot used was alpharev cm7r3 (~290mb for data)
Though reading this thread makes me wonder, whatever happened to the 1GB ext partition? What is it used for?
A2sd: apps on ext(SD)
Dalvik on internal
Sent from my HTC Desire
Some rarely used system apps are on sd_ext which allows rom to fit cm7 hboot system partition. Also all downloaded apps .apk go to sd_ext, but their dalvik cache (which is from what the app actually runs) stay in internal memory and that makes rom super fast. What you see in settings is true but this space will be taken only by dalVik and that means (with your 120mb) lots of space.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Just wasn't really sure I had done it correctly. Bit of a noob!!.
I also just wanted it correct before adding my files and also flashing custom splash and boot animations.

[Q] Can the Cache partition be increased in size?

Hi Experts!
I have an HTC Wildfire rooted with CM 7.1.0.1 stable installed. Love my phone and Cyanogenmod but I have an irritating problem with downloading large apps from the Market app. Basically there is not enough space on internal storage to store the file.
After some searching and investigation I think I can see the problem. The market uses the Cache partition as a temporary store for downloads. The dalvik cache is also located on the partition. Unfortunately the dalvik cache is so large that it is using up pretty much most of the cache partition (currently 31.62MB used leaving 8.38MB free and there is nothing else but the dalvik cache taking up space at present).
So I'm not sure how to resolve this. I've seen some posts where people have moved the dalvik cache and/or the Market download folder to SD but I'm reluctant to do that as I can imagine this will slow things down a lot plus cause problems if I remove the SD card, turn on mass storage mode etc.
This leaves me to the conclusion that I need a bigger cache partition. So I'd like to know, is this even possible or recommended? If not what other options do I have?
Thanks,
Neil

Thanks for that Guide, that certainly looks helpful, although a pain to have to wipe my system and start over .
Something unusual I have noticed is that I seem to have two Dalvik-Cache's. One is on /cache/dalvik-cache the other is on data/dalvik-cache. They both have contents too so I would assume they are both used!

Try to wipe dalvik-cache and see if it appears again. Dalvik cache should be on data partition, but if you flash your roms through RomManager than it moves dalvick-cache to /cache for some reason.

Stupid Link2SD problem

Hello Guys, i need help.
I followed this guide to create a Link2sd system.
http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/12/12/link2sd-guide-never-worry-about-internal-memory-limits-again/
Link2SD Partition is FAT32 primary, other one is also FAT32.
My problem is, after moving my apps i have a lot of free space in internal memory. After the reboot, which takes some time, some apps are missing, and i have no free space anymore in my internal memory. What am i doing wrong? I´ve wiped dalvik cache through CWM, but that didn´t help. However, I can restore old system through CWM Backup, but i want a system with working Link2sd.
Using .69 rom.
Any tips?

Okay, when it seems to be this problem then i´m using ext format. But ext4 can only be used with some kernels, doomlords one right? But i thought it´s some kind of dalvik cache problem. I read that some people on a german forum pointing of that. But anyways, i´ll try ext3, want to see if it works better.
Now i know what the issue was: You can link max.10 apps at once, than you need to restart phone. Guess that was the problem. I linked too much apps at once and dalvik cache had a problem with it. But thx anyways for responding.

Low memory at boot
I have an odd problem ,,, Upon boot my phone has very low internal memory and I get an error.
About 1 to 2 minutes after boot, all of a sudden I get a large chunk of it back ... is something corrupt in my LINK2SD setup ?
The internal memory is so low at boot sometimes that it starts to F/C apps and sometimes doesn't even load the SIM card ...
Lib, dex files ?
... it seems to be the linking of LIB & DEX files upon boot, if I turn the option off within LINK2SD the memory stays low, if I switch it on and reboot then after about 100 seconds the memory comes back ...
Does this mean I will always 'owe' back the internal memory from LINK2SD ?
I thought LINK2SD symlinked to the files, which to my understanding was just a small shortcut places on the internal pointing back to the EXT partition
When the memory drops low at boot, it makes things FC error
When I link the lib and apk files, Link2SD works grandly. Maybe it's the dex files that's causing issues? Or maybe you chose the wrong file system when you first ran Link2SD?

[Q] E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]

In my defense, and before anyone jumps up and yells "questions go in Q&A forum" I know that and originally posted this question in the Q&A forum but, as is the case too often with the Q&A forums, it got only one response and no real answer.
So at the risk of being flamed (I have thick skin, I can handle it) I'm moving the post here in hopes of getting some help with understanding this.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds with valid information/answers.
Anytime I wipe Dalvik Cache I get the following message.
E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]
I haven't altered any of the settings in my phone (that I know of) and I seem able to read from my sd card just fine so I don't think it's negatively affecting anything but I'd like to know why I get this and what it means.

Much appreciated but I didn't realize it isn't wiping dalvik cache so wouldn't have known to search for that problem. I never partition my sd cards and only started seeing this error a few weeks ago despite having wiped dalvik cache (on 3 different phones) many times. Or maybe I just didn't notice it before if it's a common issue with un-partioned sd cards.
Thanks for your help.

It's still wiping your dalvik just not EXT dalvik because your sd isn't partitioned. So it's still wiping internal dalvik. That's why it says dalvik wiped after it tells you no ext found.

Okay that makes sense.
Thanks for the responses.
So if we let it repartition, then we loose all the data on the card right? I have a 16gb (i know its not much compared to you 64gb sd'rs) but sometimes it can be slow (it is class 10) and yes, I know the benefits would be great, but I feel kinda lazy and do not want to repartition if I dont have to.

[Q] How to delete old files???????

Hi guys. I have the 16 GB White one.
I have flashed at least 20 different ROMS since i got this phone. Even though i always wipe all data and cache. I still can see files in the tree that belong to older roms. I have have files that say BACKED, another one that says AOKP and others. Right now i'm running on Liquidsmooth JB v2-RC3.
The major files i have are the backups from CWM. Two back ups: (stock and the present liquid jb) Booth together don't make more that 4GB. Then i have on pictures and videos less that 2 BG. What else could be taking my space? I should have more than 4 GB free and my phone says i only have 500 MB free.
Is there any way to delete everything on the phone to make it clean like when it came out? Buut that i could stil keep the rom i'm using. Or even if i have to do al over again. Can some one explain to me please. Any help with be appreciated. i'LL PUSH THAT THANKS BUTTON AGAIN AND AGAIN.
In recovery format data, system, and internal (and/or) external sdcard. OR get FX file explorer or solid explorer 2 (my favorites) explore the files and delete what u don't want

Another good app is call DiskUsage.
It will show you in a graphical form what is taking up so much space. It will work on internal and external and obviously you are rooted, so it has those functions too.
What if i delete something that wont let me boot again? Also i noticed that in the internal SD card tree, there are two CLOCKWORKMOD FILES
Clockworkmod
Clockworkmod Copy
Right now i only have one back up because i deleted LIQUID one. So, right now i only have the STOCK Rom backup. Wish is around 1.8 GB.
Why there are two CWM flies and booth have 1.8 GB. ??????????So, The stock rom takes me almost 4 GB ?????????????????????/ Thats crazy.
I'd like to delete everything and start again. But i'm affraid to delete any file that preventes me from booting into recovery at least......Thanks again mate. SORRY MY ENGLISH
Thanks mate. Hey, i tried to download the DiskUsage from the market by Ivan Volosyuk and it says this app is not compatible with me device. WTF??? LOL
T2mo SGS3 16GB
Liquid Rom
KT747 Kernel.
Just delete the old roms from the download folder with a file explorer.
If you've been using Rom manager it puts them in its folder

Thanks again: Well. I wonder. What would happen if i FORMAT the entire internal card and then drop a rom in it, to flash. Would this make any sense if i want to make a clean FLASH?????
I think i'm missing something here. Has any body done this before? Format the whole card and start from zero again????
Thanks again and i wont forget to hit that thanks to you.

S clean flash is one where yoy have done a factory reset / wipe dalvik, cache and data.
If you reset from the settings menu it should wipe you back to an out of the box state, or a clean fresh rom installed state.
If you factory reset from cwm or twrp it will not wipe the internal sdcard.
Download your rom of choice to External sdcard, backup internal, factory reset ftom settings menu, reboot recovery and flash rom from external sd.
Earlier you were talking about not having enough space, can you not back up your int/ext to your computer?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Now we are talking. Yes, i have backed up all my files to my computer. I will give this a try and will report to you tomorrow. Thanks again mate
Hi again, Well. I did what you told me: Factory reset from Setting, backup/reset, FACTORY RESET. The phone went into CWM and a blue bar went from left to right in only 5 secondes and then Liquidsmooth jb rom started to boot. I let it finish and then rebooted into cmw and wiped everything posible there, from dalvik to cache pertition and did it 3 times just in case, then i flashe the new JellyFrost JB leak.
When i booted the phone and connected to PC i still have 0.98 BG free.
I wonder if i should format this thing from my computer in FAT 32 ????????
Or what i'm i doing wrong?????? I can see all the old files still there of program i have not installed yet....Crazy mess......Any idea....I feel like a D..k
I'm sorry man! Its because of the recovery. Hitting factory reset just rebbots recovery and uses the factory reset there. If you have cwm or twrp it won't wipe everything. Forgot about that.
Try this instead. I use twrp and in the Wipe menu there is an option to format data. If cwm has the same option try using that instead of factory reset. I think its there in case you do want to wipe everything.
Don't try to format the internal using your computer.
Internal sdcard is actually just part of the /data partition. If you go to /data/media it is the same thing as /mnt/sdcard or /storage/sdcard. The internal sdcard is not a separate partition itself.
Just to clarify from your last post. When you factory reset were your apps gone? When you were referring to parts of your programs left over, were you talking about the folders on the internal sdcard?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I think I get what you mean OP. I still have folders on my phone from apps I uninstalled weeks ago >.<
It's pretty obnoxious. Especially since most are empty.
You should have an option to format sd card under mounts and storage in cwr. This should do what you're asking. Make sure you have a rom ready to go on your external sd though, because this should wipe everything.
