Wifi On/Off with TASKER??? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Whats the best easiest way for this?? Ive tried a few from searching on google, directs me to droidforums.com but they seem to not work that well. Plus, some people use variable set, using %HOME = 1 and all that. Others go straight to the point of wifi near - on but somehow it doesnt work right. Can anyone help me? i just need a WiFi Near really, to toggle and connect to my HOME. I use Y5 app in the market, which does it but its not always reliable, doesnt always activate it ON/OFF but its exactly what I want but with TASKER, since it seems a hell of a good app!! Thank you.

can you not set up a "in range of" style thing? Like it goes off your GPS when you are near home and it will then turn on wifi.
I don't have the app and just did a quick skim of the website... sorry if this doesn't help

Most Effective/Easiest Way to Disable GPS?

I just wanted a quick way to be able to do this in order to save battery when i dont need it.
i have read/heard that having gps enabled and active doesnt actually use any more battery until it is fed into a maps program (or something similar) which must then use that info to find a location from the internet.
so:
1) does gps really use extra battery when it is enabled/active but not actually being used at the time?
2) what is the best way to terminate the gps connection?
thx, Jim.
somewhere i read that if u go into settings...phone...services...location settings and turn that off (only 911 will use gps) it saves battery...but i havent even updated my vogue to use gps yet so i've only heard this in another thread...i wonder what happens if say u run googlemaps and try using gps while its off, will it enable or just not lock any satelittes?

ya i have read that about the location setting too, im just not sure if that really truly shuts gps off/terminates it completely....? anyone?
as for if it will work with the location setting disabled i am testing it now and...looks like it wont so..maybe that does the trick? hmm not sure...
alright well after another 10000 hrs of fooling around with roms and gps i have learned a lot. but the thing relative to this thread that i just checked is that you do not need location enabled to use gps. works just dandy w/o it. though i think that is where the agps comes in and therefore can/will probably help a bit to have it on, though it does drain more battery so i think im going to leave mine off for the time being.

[Q] Best App that will turn on GPS remotely?

Anyone out there who can recommend a good locator app for a lost phone? I'm specifically looking for one that can remotely turn on GPS as I keep it off most of the time. Thanks for any suggestions.
If you are rooted, then mobiledefense does the job, use the version that you flash in recovery and it'll remotely activate the gps if its deactivated. If you're not rooted though, then the best it can do is cell tower triangulation like google maps when gps is off.
there is a version that you flash in recovery? i have mobile defense and it's great, seems very accurate even before i was rooted.

Yes go to there website and download then flash the zip in recovery, uninstall mobile defense first of course. Doing this installs mobile defense as a service which then can turn on gps remotely. Must be rooted.
or you can go here...looks like finished one up on xda:

??
so you can turn on gps remotely???
Tasker is a good option. You can just send your phone a specific text, and it will turn on the GPS and WiFi, get its location, then text back a Google Maps link. I've also got a profile that turns on sound to maximum and starts playing my most annoying ring tone when I send it another text.
?
im going to try it. should i just download it through a torrent site?
i installed it. is there a manual ? i cant figure out how to set up turn on gps through text message.
Yup, if you head over to the Tasker website, there's a wiki with instructions on how to setup profiles to do things like the locate functions.
i folowed that wiki to a tee. for hours i read it over and over and still cant get it to work. i dont know what i could have done wrong. i set my evo up identical to the wiki
when i pull my notifcation bar down it says no active profiles. i dont know how to activate it i guess? when i click apply that profile it just closes the tasker app, is that what its suppose to do? id really appreciate any help.

Block Internet for a single app on a single network

Hi,
I use tTorrent to download big files when I'm at work (we have a fiber connection, there's no problem). I set it on Wifi only, but I owuld like to prevent it from downloading from my home network (I don't have a lot of bandwidth allocated). Is this possible? I know that the app can't do it (didn't expect more anyway) but is there an app who could do that for me?
I tried blocking the tTorrent port on my router but I can't figure out how :/
Thank you!
This sounds like a job for TASKER!! lol AMAZING app and really one of the main reasons I put up with a lot of android BS, and not move to the iPhone. Be warned Tasker is scary at first since it SOOO powerful, however after some reading and youtube videos I was up and running, examples of what I have it do.
on random times of the day Tasker will send a text to my wife explaining how much I love her.
When I launch camera, or gallery the brightness of the screen goes all the way up, when I launch the camera NFC enables.
When I launch a web browser screen rotation turns on, when I leave it turns off.
at 7pm the phone goes in to auto reply mode explaining to any would be textures and callers I'm working out and I'll get back to them soon
There's one I found that if your going over 5MPH auto text will turn on and will explain to people your driving.
Sleep mode after 12pm and off at 7am
Tasker & astrid make for a wonderful location based reminder team!
Locale is mch like tasked only VERY VERY simple, and you will be frustrated at the fact that you cant to 1 tenths of what Tasker does. lol

these are very basic commands, there are MANY MANY more.
Dont forget to hit THANKS!
You could also do this at the network level. Set up a static reservation for your phone so that it always gets the same ip address. Then block the port(s) that the program uses for that ip assess address. Net result is that the firewall will prevent the connection.

LBE Privacy Guard is your best solution. It has individual app firewall, and app permission manager.
That tasker app sounds like it makes life a little easier. I'm going to have to check that out

[Q] Programmatically Turn Wi-fi Hotspot on/off

I'm thinking about building an application for personal use. The details aren't important but one of the things i would like to be able to do is turn the wifi hotspot on or off. I've looked around, but haven't been able to find anything on the subject, or whether or not it's even possible.
Does anybody have some information on this?
Most ICS ROM's have that option built in...have you tried app store search or just a google search?

If you intend to have your phone automattically turn on wifi hotspot based on certain profiles, Tasker will do that for you. You can find it in the playstore. It's a paid app though.
Well, i suppose suggestions for apps that do the sort of thing i want to do. Unfortunately there's nothing out there that does what i want, because I want something rather unusual.
I spoke to a friend yesterday and he pointed me in the direction of the API i want (which contrary to my initial assumptions was not DHD specific), so when i have the time i can put together my tool.
Thanks anyway

Best way to setup one action for serial tasks (e.g. wifi off, data on, vpn start)?

I've started using OpenVPN, and to use it I disable wifi, enable data, and then get into OpenVPN to establish the connection. That's not convenient at all, and neither is getting off the VPN.
What's the best way of creating a single icon for such things?
I thought perhaps Tasker, which I've read about but not used yet, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm overlooking something else.
I'm on stock 4.1.2 now but am considering CM10.

Tasker + Secure Settings can do this but you may need to figure out a script to get it to also enable OpenVPN's connection.
Tasker is worth every penny

OK, thanks, I'm beginning to bludgeon my way through Tasker now (a bit of a steep learning curve). I'm curious, though, which part of what I want to do is Secure Settings for? I've read its description, but it's hard to pick out which particular thing there you had in mind.
