[Q] Maps - HTC One X

I have downloaded a European map for offline viewing when I get there but I don't know where to find it or how to load it up to use with just the GPS or just view it.
Can you help?
Ta

Anyone?

I have had a another look round on the phone & I can load up my current location on the maps but not the ones I've downloaded.
After 143 views I was sure someone on here would have known?

Google map

Is there a way too download the whole google map?
I dont want to pay data connection for using GPS.
Thanks.
hi, it s second time i see that s kind of funny question.
google map is a online only tools.
the amount of data that google hosting is huge.
satellite photo of the world, tons of poi, ...
so terrabite of data.
it s so easy to understand that no phone could never, ever, host
google map.
have fun
An alternative then?
thanks
TomTom, Navigon, Route 66 etc...
iGO8 is also an alternative.. A little bit of tweaking but worth it.
Anyways, was Google maps preinstalled on your HDs? I didn't have it on mine from the box but the funny thing is that HD Tweak still allowed me to assign a shortcut for it (left or right softkey)
Try java MGMaps. I did not tried it on blackstone but it should work. It supports multiple map providers (google, yahoo, microsoft) and there was an external tool (i don't remember its name, never used it) for predownloading maps - it can work offline too.

Yes, there is Terracrosser : http://terracrosser.com/
It allows to perform exactly what you want to do. First, you use Mapper (included) to download maps on your PC. There they get packed so that you can copy them into the Terracrosser folder on your phone.
However, as Geistteufel already said, downloading such maps takes alot of space. Plus, you should not abuse with the downloads, that is downloading the whole world or a continent or a bigger country, as Google keeps a blacklist. You don't wanna become (black)listed, do you ? Actually, I don't know if that which you can do with the Mapper tool is even legal ...
You can use Google Navigator. When registered you can download a map area with a range of depths. Or simply browe the surface of the Earth and you'll get on you card a big file containing all that you have seen, like in desktop Google Earth.
Georgeous2008,why would I be blacklisted for download a lot?
Wowozanga, can I get a link? Is it free?
I tried the Terracrosser program and it looks hard to use as the gps keeps shifting left or right non stop.
I cant even open the Mapper app because it just gives a unexpected shutdown on the program.
I gave up with it.
How about gpsVP?
originally, it was for Garmin vector maps, but currently it also displays Google/Live/OpenMap map and satellite. Maps gan be cached by the XP version, and the cache folder synced to the handheld.

Refer to the Google Maps general conditions for further information.
Google Navigator
Google Navigator:
http://www.pdafun.net
Last version is 4.6.
For the convenience of space you may want to install on a SD card of at least 2 GB, formated with FAT32.

Ill give it a shot.
Thanks a lot.

Hi there,
Try GPS Tuner, in their forum they have mentioned a tool with which you can download the google maps for any area at any depth. I am currently using it and also GPS Tuner is the best. (But the tool is downloading maps in JPG format so you will not be able to make searches for POI etc.
GPS Tuner
I have been using GPS Tuner for a long time, but you have to use other programs to download the tiles of image (Google Satellite Maps Downloader), or use big jpegs (captured in Google Maps on PC) already calibrated with the PC soft that come with GPS Tuner (Map Calibrator) that are working veeeeery sloooow. After a couple of images downloaded with Google Satellite Maps Downloader, Google will ban you IP address for 24 hours, and you will not get other images.
In Google Navigator everything you have downloaded remains in archive and can be used when offline, with roadmap, satelite view, depending which mode you were using when browsing the Earth surface and the level of zoom. This program is "trusted" by Google Maps and you can download a lot of images. If eventually you will get banned, you have a command to reactivate the path to Google Maps.
Now I'm just waiting for a "medicine " for the current version.
Best regards,
Wowozange

As already mentioned by someone else the mapping data that google hosts for us is so big that one can hardly image its size. Have a look here, the first link. I just hope that this very valuable service will remain available for free despite the global financial black hole .
Now to your particular need, the mobile version of Google earth has also a local cache (possibly configurable!?) so when you are online at a flat rate you can "pre"-visit the place you will later be going offline so as to download the mapping data on your device in advance.
I believe terracrosser is fantastic for that use, but dont work on blackstone...
Anyone can help about this?

I don't think so. I believe that nobody can use this geotagging. Just wait for the official release of R3AA firmware

Hmm, yes they can. Upload your pics to Flickr and under More Properties you'll see the Long/Lat EXIF info: http://www.flickr.com/photos/artesea/3397692509/meta/
I've installed the R3AA camera cab on my X1. Geotagging works very well. Can open the photos on my Mac with OS X Preview. The coordinates are displayed in the Inspector panel, clicking the locate button shows the position in Google Maps - just brilliant.

Irfanview working fine http://www.irfanview.com/ download plugins too, after install klick image - information then EXIF info and "show in Google Earth" - Google Earth is must be installed in your PC, why this is not workin in phone in google maps or something?
it's working for me also... but remember, launch the camera and take some photos.
if you launch, take a photo and exit, no gps data will be embedded as you have to wait to the x1 to get a fix on the sats before it records that info.
example:
I shooted 4 photos and only the last 3 had the gps data.
of course, if you launch the camera and wait to get the fix, all photos will have it.

Lots of GPS-info!è
but I don't know where it is xD
Hi,
When taking pictures you must wait until you will see 3 little "brackets" with satellite icon (left upper corner). It means you have GPS fix. Now while taking pictures you will have long/lat data in EXIF.
Send it to flikr or picasa and will see exact position of them.
These I taken with my X1: Geotagged X1 photos on Picasa

Whoot!
Nice
You don't need to place the picture's on the map itself, right? LOL
Anyway thx for the tip ;-)
Yes, it is no need to place it on the map. Just upload the photos and they are placed automatically.
You need to remember when changing resolution (irfanview for example) always keep exif data while saving the photo.

Streetview Google maps!

Hoping someone can help me to find streetview. I've started the latest version of google maps but can't seem to find how to get to streetview. Could someone assist?

Hold your finger on the street so that it gets the address and then click the little pop up, then you can choose street view.
Alternatively you could download the street view app from the marketplace and directly access street view by typing an address or location in.
I knew someone would know... thanks a lot
Compass hardware?
Does this phone have a compass hardware like the other HTC phone where you can look at street view and then move the phone around and the picture moves with you because of the compass hardware?
...did I make any sense?

how do i upgrade to Google maps 4.1?

Hi Folks,
Have seen reviews recommending updating asap to 4.1 but how do you do it? i cant find Google maps in the market place..
Is there an option in the pre installed app to look for updates? Checked version info and it says 4.0
Cheers,
Mick
go to market, then downloads and see what updates are available
i'm on 4.1.1 (#4156) gmm-android-htc
its not in my downloaded list though as it was on the phone when i got it..
It was at the top of the popular free apps for me saying update available, along with the facebook app.
Easiest way is to search Google Inc on the market the inc makes all the diff, picking out googles specific applications first before broadening the terms.
Cheers,

You in Ireland or the UK?
I am in Ireland and I see no update to Maps available. And a search for google inc just show sup sky map. no maps. I think the Irish market app is different. (crap)
If you're in Ireland why don't you install the BRUT version? Gives you the same features and also Nav!

Will this work on the Desire? Also, as I understand the reason we don't have navigation in the UK version is because of some copyright/legal issues - If we install this will the Navigation actually work?
Thanks.

You have to install something else as well, but the speech doesn't work as yet on it. Didn't for me anyhow.
Make sure you have 2.1 Android otherwise Maps 4.1 won't work anyhow.
Doesn't matter now as it's out officially in version 4.1.1.

CoPilot is my favourite and can be downloaded for the market and comes with a trial period.
You could also try Navigon which can also be obtained from the market.
You said that you're looking for google maps that works offline. But if u are looking for something similar to Google maps (but with offline maps) there are some good paid navigation apps like Garmin, with their own offline maps....
If that's what you are asking for, check Navigon, CoPilot or iGO My Way...
Thanks i'm looking for free alternative if i can find. Because i will use it rarely

Fancy the changes.
Well fancy the chances of that. I log into XDA to ask for the best offline maps application as I need to get around Spain and Switzerland without data for the
next two months starting in 2 days.
The first thread, at the top of general is just that!
i hope we can find good free one

Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
On a recent Italian trip I used navigon (paid) and mapnik which was free. You can select map tiles on the PC then download them to the mapnik folder to view offline. It doesn't do navigation. Andnav2 uses the same files and might do navigation.
Navigon did a great job, have tried copilot on android and Garmin and tomtom navigators. Copilot has more features but navigon is fast and better interface.

İt seems just paid ones working?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Which paid navigation software has maps for Malaysia?? Anybody knows??
Try Motonav. I think you will be pleased.
What about Maverick and mobile Atlas map creator. Maverick is free unless you want more waypoints. You select the maps you want in Atlas map creator and select download. You let it run for a wee while and then copy them to the maverick directory on your sd card. You can select google maps, google earth, bing maps, ovi maps, google terrain and a few more. The only drawback is the fat 32 file size limitation. The google maps to level 16 of Northern Ireland is only 1.5gb on my PC, but on my memory card they are 8gb. There is no navigation either its just for viewing maps. You can find a full walk through of Mobile Atlas map creator on the forums if you do a search.
TrekBuddy is another nice program. Use an AtlasCreator to download Google or other maps. It's available on Android Market or directly on http://www.trekbuddy.net for free. It's also great for logging your tracks.
