Hold your finger on the street so that it gets the address and then click the little pop up, then you can choose street view.
Alternatively you could download the street view app from the marketplace and directly access street view by typing an address or location in.

I knew someone would know... thanks a lot

Compass hardware?
Does this phone have a compass hardware like the other HTC phone where you can look at street view and then move the phone around and the picture moves with you because of the compass hardware?
...did I make any sense?

Google map

Is there a way too download the whole google map?
I dont want to pay data connection for using GPS.
Thanks.
hi, it s second time i see that s kind of funny question.
google map is a online only tools.
the amount of data that google hosting is huge.
satellite photo of the world, tons of poi, ...
so terrabite of data.
it s so easy to understand that no phone could never, ever, host
google map.
have fun
An alternative then?
thanks
TomTom, Navigon, Route 66 etc...
iGO8 is also an alternative.. A little bit of tweaking but worth it.
Anyways, was Google maps preinstalled on your HDs? I didn't have it on mine from the box but the funny thing is that HD Tweak still allowed me to assign a shortcut for it (left or right softkey)
Try java MGMaps. I did not tried it on blackstone but it should work. It supports multiple map providers (google, yahoo, microsoft) and there was an external tool (i don't remember its name, never used it) for predownloading maps - it can work offline too.

Yes, there is Terracrosser : http://terracrosser.com/
It allows to perform exactly what you want to do. First, you use Mapper (included) to download maps on your PC. There they get packed so that you can copy them into the Terracrosser folder on your phone.
However, as Geistteufel already said, downloading such maps takes alot of space. Plus, you should not abuse with the downloads, that is downloading the whole world or a continent or a bigger country, as Google keeps a blacklist. You don't wanna become (black)listed, do you ? Actually, I don't know if that which you can do with the Mapper tool is even legal ...
You can use Google Navigator. When registered you can download a map area with a range of depths. Or simply browe the surface of the Earth and you'll get on you card a big file containing all that you have seen, like in desktop Google Earth.
Georgeous2008,why would I be blacklisted for download a lot?
Wowozanga, can I get a link? Is it free?
I tried the Terracrosser program and it looks hard to use as the gps keeps shifting left or right non stop.
I cant even open the Mapper app because it just gives a unexpected shutdown on the program.
I gave up with it.
How about gpsVP?
originally, it was for Garmin vector maps, but currently it also displays Google/Live/OpenMap map and satellite. Maps gan be cached by the XP version, and the cache folder synced to the handheld.

Refer to the Google Maps general conditions for further information.
Google Navigator
Google Navigator:
http://www.pdafun.net
Last version is 4.6.
For the convenience of space you may want to install on a SD card of at least 2 GB, formated with FAT32.
Best regards,

Ill give it a shot.
Thanks a lot.

Hi there,
Try GPS Tuner, in their forum they have mentioned a tool with which you can download the google maps for any area at any depth. I am currently using it and also GPS Tuner is the best. (But the tool is downloading maps in JPG format so you will not be able to make searches for POI etc.
GPS Tuner
I have been using GPS Tuner for a long time, but you have to use other programs to download the tiles of image (Google Satellite Maps Downloader), or use big jpegs (captured in Google Maps on PC) already calibrated with the PC soft that come with GPS Tuner (Map Calibrator) that are working veeeeery sloooow. After a couple of images downloaded with Google Satellite Maps Downloader, Google will ban you IP address for 24 hours, and you will not get other images.
In Google Navigator everything you have downloaded remains in archive and can be used when offline, with roadmap, satelite view, depending which mode you were using when browsing the Earth surface and the level of zoom. This program is "trusted" by Google Maps and you can download a lot of images. If eventually you will get banned, you have a command to reactivate the path to Google Maps.
Now I'm just waiting for a "medicine " for the current version.
Best regards,
Wowozange

As already mentioned by someone else the mapping data that google hosts for us is so big that one can hardly image its size. Have a look here, the first link. I just hope that this very valuable service will remain available for free despite the global financial black hole .
Now to your particular need, the mobile version of Google earth has also a local cache (possibly configurable!?) so when you are online at a flat rate you can "pre"-visit the place you will later be going offline so as to download the mapping data on your device in advance.
I believe terracrosser is fantastic for that use, but dont work on blackstone...
Anyone can help about this?

Geotagging Photos

Hi there,
Recently had an epic trip (thanks to the volcano), left geotagging on for all photos, so I can see them dotted across a map of Europe.
Cant find any way of viewing them, I've tried uploading one to flickr, and it doesn't do anything automatically.
Is there something I need to do? Gotta say, the iphone geotagging feature is much better implemented...
Regards
niklz
my bet is on picasa as it is googles own photo hosting. On my picasa I have a small google map on the bottom right of my home page with a mark on florida for the photos from last years warped tour and dundee from a random jaunt i went last summer =]
I assume this is exactly what yours would show up like if you uploaded them all.
Im actually going to go check see if this works...
Edit: ok i cannot get geotagging to work, full stop... not good.
Any light shed on the subject would be awesome
Seconded, dying to see them.
If you open the EXIF data (right click the photo in Windows Explorer, properties, details) there should be a 'GPS' section which has latitude and longitude coodinates if the geotagging info has been stored correctly...
Nothing wrong with geotagging here. Take photo, upload to flickr, view flickr, click add to map and the map is centred on the geotagged coordinates.
If you check the photo properties on flickr you should see the following
GPS Latitude:
GPS Longitude:
GPSAltitude Ref: Above Sea Level
GPSAltitude: 79 m
GPSTime Stamp: 08:29:46
GPSMap Datum: WGS-84
GPSProcessing Method: HYBRID-FIX
GPSDate Stamp:
Just tried it in picasa (desktop version), just uploaded photos direct from phone to web picasa. Then sync the desktop picasa to your web albums. You`ll see a small red icon in the bottom left (google maps). Click on places icon in the bottom right and a map will open showing your locations of your photos.
Or a really cool feature is to select all your photos, click the geotag icon at the bottom. It`ll open google earth and geotag all then you can see all your photos in google earth.
In your Flickr settings, enable "Import EXIF location data".
Hmm, my photos don't seem to have any EXIF data on geo location :*((((.
I had GPS on obv, all I have done with the photos is copy them onto my hdd, using the HTC usb cable.
I have since replaced the phone, anything else I could try? Or has my old phone just cocked it up...
Regards
niklz
Just tried same procedure with new phone, no luck.
Sorry to be a pain, but could you do an idiots guide.
What settings must be in affect on the phone/PC.
What method of getting photos to picasa/flickr insures the uploaded file isn't compressed e.c.t.
Would be very grateful, Let me check if this new photo has geotags in the EXIF data.
Regards,
niklz
Bump, please cant get this to work atm...
I`m just uploading to flickr or picasa straight from the phone. Take photo, press share icon, send to my flickr/picasa account.
If you load into the pc they should be fine, but exif (geotag) data can be lost if you manipulate and resave the images in some software.
Also, on the Desire. Check the settings in camera has geotagging on, then when taking a geotagged photo make sure you have gps lock. The animated gps (satellite) icon in the top left corner of the camera screen will be replaced by a target to show locked location.

Ahh, its the lock thing! really really wish I'd have known this a week ago!
Thanks for the help, now it works fine. takes ~30sec to lock for the first time, is that normal?
Is there a decent geotag app for the desire, will google earth do it on the desire?
kind regards,
niklz
Yes usually takes about 30 secs to lock onto the satellites. You could always leave GPS on but then its going to eat battery.
Haven't tried any geotagging apps for android sorry. Google earth wont do it. Its pretty basic on android, recommend doing those kind of things on the PC.
aaah right. so yea i had the right idea but had no idea about the location lock. Cheers guys
Does anyone know if it is possible to geo-tag using only tower location? Used to be able to do this on my iphone and although not 100% accurate, at least lets you get a rough idea without trying to get a GPS lock?
Our is there an app which would do this?

3d google maps for DEFY not working

Updated my google maps to 5.0 last night along with a new version of street view but there doesn't appear to be any way to access the new 3d view or caching for a journey.
Is the device not supported? requirements on the goggle map market section only state 2.0 devices and above as the requirement.
I updated google maps yesterday. And it works.
I went to NY city

I just tried it, the new 3D feature works great! Search for a big city and zoom-in deeply, you should be able to see 3d blocks.
I'm still trying to cache and use maps offline instead. Any ideas?
Nothing. Tried un-installing it and the stuff connected to google maps but still nothing. Says i have the latest version but none of the new features appear
Only a few cities are available in 3D for now. For NY city it works fine.
After a 3rd install all working fine, nyc in all its vector glory. Now if they update London for me it would be most useful.
Also how does the caching work, is it just generally for maps or can you cache a specific journey?
Hi!
I have the new vector graphics but no way to activate Street View ...
On HTC Desire Street View can be avtivated with the Trackball, but on Defy i cant access this Menu

Search for a place or select a point on the map which is covered by street view, then push the proper icon, you should be able to get into the street view mode.
Thanks tiggggr !
Now Street View is working!

[Q] Maps

I have downloaded a European map for offline viewing when I get there but I don't know where to find it or how to load it up to use with just the GPS or just view it.
Can you help?

Anyone?
I have had a another look round on the phone & I can load up my current location on the maps but not the ones I've downloaded.
After 143 views I was sure someone on here would have known?

[Q] Geo Tagged Photos & Maps

I have a question, on the Note 3 when you took a picture with Geo Tagging turned on you could at a later date, bring up the photo and press the menu button and get directions to where the photo was taken in Google Maps. Now that I have the Note 4 I dont see Get directions in the menu anymore. This really blows because it was a feature I used a lot on the Note 3. I can bring the photo up on a Google map, I can see where it is but I see no way to map myself to it.
Any insights on how I can regain this ability, is there a plug in I need to install, or a separate app?
Thanks.
If you goto the photo, click the menu button, click more info. All your geo tagging is in there. It also will bring up Google maps and show all your photos and where they were taken on the map. Hopefully this helps

Yes I saw how it was doing that but gave no option to get directions to the Geo tagged photo the way the Note 3 did
