I hate Sense but I love SRS enhancement. Sense ROMS always drain fast for me and are memory consuming. Anyone suffering the same pain as me?

I came over from a Galaxy S 4G and I knew what I was getting when I switched. I must say now that I have it I really hate sense!! I knew there was an MIUI available so the sense only lasted about 20 minutes after un-boxing.
Really? I'm the exact opposite. AOSP is quick with good battery life but I can't stand it. It feels incomplete to me. Sense is the best to me, even though it might be a little slower and use more battery.
On a side note why would you want a HTC phone if you dislike Sense?
I am in agreement with you on this, the sense are a little flashy out of all the roms. They also have a lot of extra mods and different settings, which to me gives it a heavy feeling. The asop and akop aren't heavy at all, and they still have the same customization options that I want, yet very easy to use. I love my ICS, I loved CM7, i always find myself using an asop over sense

I did the exact same thing although I had to wait for the alpha rev for windows back in July. Anyone remember that?? Don't get me wrong HTC makes beast phones. But STOCK sense is garbage. If devs didn't put their custom tweaks into their roms I think a lot of people wouldn't use them.
I dunno about stock sense being garbage. I came from a Droid Eris though which is why I probably like sense now. Sense 2.1 ran at a crawl on that phone so AOSP Rom were the o ly way to make that phone run good. With the dinc2 though, I've noticed that sense ROMS just run better than aosp. The AOSP ROMS seem to lag after being on without a reboot. The sense ROMS don't seem to do that.

Sense has some amazing widgets and I like most of the interface, but CM7 and MIUI roms are so much quicker. Luckliy I have Boot manager, so I can use on rom for a week, till I get bored, then switch it up. I no longer have to make backups and reflash. I always come back to sense though, mainly becuase of the widgets
Well the thing with Sense is if you come from a history of using it your going to like it no matter what. I mean I got the Droid Incredible 2 because it was free for me. I tried handling sense but replaced it after a week. This phone was the first HTC phone I ever had. (First Android for me was the Motorola Cliq XT since my intro to the smartphone world was through the iPhone). Just Sense is not like ICS where I just recently came from. And ICS was my baby.
I LOVE Sense!! And, for me at least, it has better battery life than AOSP ROMs although it is a little slower.

Sense better battery life than aosp? No way.
I came to the dinc2 from an og droid, and I have to say I would take sense over aosp any day. And yes, I also get better battery life on sense. Then again, I bought an htc phone because I wanted sense.

I came over from the OG Droid, so Sense was completely new to me when I got my Incredible 2 last summer. I tried it for about a month before I finally decided I just wasn't a fan, so I went to Go Launcher. A bit later, I decided to root the phone and try out some fancy new ROMs. I've been through a bunch of different selections since then. Generally anytime a new Sense ROM comes out, I see all the people that rave about it, so I wind up giving it a try. But it never fails, within a week or two, I wind up going back to an AOSP choice.
As far as battery life, I haven't personally noticed a huge different between the two. I've run Sense flashes that are good and battery, and others that are not as good. Same for AOSP. It the end, it basically comes down to me just not personally loving the Sense UI.
Sense:
. much better camera (especially in low light conditions)
. Better phone and contacts apk s . Better phone and speaker in call volumes
. Slightly better battery life
. More polished UI
. Feels like it's made for the phone
Aosp:
. Quicker, lighter, snappier
. Power toggles are awesome
. Feels incomplete
. In call volumes are questionable. They're either too low or too high.
Conclusion: can't go wrong with either one, but the edge goes to sense (until aosp ICS is fully functional)

I thought I'd really like Sense, but once I used it, I just didn't care for it. Can't Stand the launcher - the enormous phone button, the dedicated "customize" button, etc... So I use ADW, which means I loose all the Sense widgets, which leaves little else of value.
The camera on Sense did seem to be better than AOSP, not sure why that would be. But I use either MIUI or CM7 as they're so much faster and, in my experience, do get better battery life.

Yep, the launcher kills Sense for me. Why on earth do they do that? That stupid customize button is one of the worst UI design decisions I've ever seen.
Ultimately, too, I'd rather have my phone run well than look pretty, so while I mess around with Sense ROMs when they come out, I always end up back on AOSP. I like HTC hardware, but Sense is more trouble than it's worth.

Yea I have to agree with that much about sense. The launcher does blow pretty bad. The paginated app drawer is pretty sad too. I use go launcher pretty much because the HTC launcher is so bad.

well certain versions of rosie are better than others....i like the mt4g slide version a lot (in tsm bullet, cheap plug) and its a lot different than normal rosie
bliss sense 3.5 rosie is barely recognizable as a sense launcher in its layout
and from what ive seen of ics sense 3.5/3.6/4.0 they completely redid the layout
I like bliss alright but i haven't tried any of the 3.5 ROMs on the dinc2 so I don't know how well they run.

"the relentless pursuit of the perfect ROM "
Hey guys,
I recently flashed between ARHD and LeeDroiD, both already fantastic ROMs, considering the Device just launched. Great respect for that dedication and support!
Tho, it seems both ROMs offer a No-Sense installation, or its possible.
AFAIK, Sense UI 4.0 still is pretty buggy. Memory Management is fuxort and causes Rosie Reboots every now and then. Plus, it seems like Sense / Rosie is causing the Phone to slow down a tad. When I use Trebuchet or Apex Launcher, Screen scrolling is WONDERFULLY smooth. Noticeably smoother than on my previous devices (Desire HD, Galaxy S2 i9100).
Question is: Even tho I always loved Sense UI, does removing Sense / Rosie speed up the phone in general? I would be perfectly fine with Apex or Trebuchet, as they run absolutely smooth so far, even with quite some widgets.
Thing is: I noticed alot of games acting up after a while, little lags every now and then, most likely a sign of cleaning up memory in the background to get the active App (in this case the game) more spare Memory to fill up. Sense UI and its Widgets seem to consume quite alot Memory, and because of the bugged memory management, it starts to lag more and more. After quitting the game, Rosie usually reboots.
I love Sense, always have, missed it alot after switching to the Galaxy S2 back in the days, but to speed up the phone and get rid of occasional lags, I would sacrifice Sense for the time being (until a new Firmware fixes issues).
I am still running Sense 4.0, but before I flash again, I would like to have your opinion and maybe experience with this matter.
Thanks guys!

I am currently trying No-Sense. The phone feels faster, indeed. Better response, apps start a little faster, haven't had a Launcher Reboot ever since (but I am using Apex instead of Nova as for now).
Too bad the Lockscreen-Shortcuts are gone, but thats normal since there's no HTC Sense Launcher anymore (Dock-Icons).

LOL, Lee's sense stripper
I am absolutely astonished now much work some ppl put in sense. I wouldn't waste a second on this launcher as it's just way too bloated (and 4.0 should be stripped ), lags on my 4-core phone, isn't able to scroll a live wallpaper smoothly and so on. Especially with launchers like Apex out there, lightweight and very fast plus customizable, I just don't get it.
Anyhow, we need a good camera alternative asap so we can go AOSP...
Sweeeeet, will try this as soon as I get my new unit.
Does anybod know if the camera UI is gone too or not?

Maybe some people like the consistent look and feel, and the at-a-glance information that the Sense widgets give them. People like me.
Lags? That depends on your perception. I don't have a problem with waiting 0.5ms to flip between one screen and the next. Maybe I'm just a patient person!!!!!!!!!

After every RAM intensive app whenever I went back "home" I was greeted by a "loading" screen and I had to wait several secs to bring rosie back to life, never happened to me with Apex.
Having to stare at a loading text on a brand new quad core phone just to load the launcher is a bit embarrassing, don't you think?

I don't like the calendar widget at all - I use a combination of simple calendar widget and business calendars week view, gives me more info over the next few days than a bunch of dots
As for notes I use catch, but there is one very good post it style note app out there but thats not the way I am using notes on my phone and my player of choice, PowerAmp has several nice widgets, so this is also not something I would miss.
What I like and would really miss are the camera app obviously, the tasks widget (for the ability to sync with G and exchange) and the mail app which is really nice. The AOSP is nice too though, so its acutally onle the camera app that will prevent me from going AOSP.
Most probably I am going to try this ROM, AOSP themed sense ROM, once the unlock before answering a call bug is squashed.

I came from HD2, best fkin phone ever, and got HOX, the next best fkin phone ever, so don't you tell me to go get an iPhone! This is about the biggest insult you can make here on xda, shame on you!
I bother with htc phones because I used to have a HD2, a diamond before and a 3300 even before that. They were all very well built and had some good hw specs. Back in the wm days, sense was a revelation and on my HD2 I could flash whatever I want, but I was shocked when I tried sense. Now on my HOX, I learned to h8 it once again. If it wasn't for the camera app, I'd be long gone. It's a real shame that the HOX has such a great cam with all those great features that can only be used together with the rest of sense. These ugly icons are so outdated, have a look at AOSP to get a feel what a menu should look like nowadays.
I never liked Samsung, the GSII had something cheap when you had it in your hand, nothing as solid and nice like htc. And I h8 them for trying to copy fkin apple, wth would want that anyway. I h8 this carrier / manufacturer customizing crap, most of the bases are flat out rubbish and only delay the updates of optimzations to the phone and make it unusable. My gf wanted to get rid of her defy, I rooted it and flashed CM7. She was absolutely amazed and at the same time upset/confused, htf a company could fk up their own product so badly! These guys should try to keep themselves apart with hw and design choices, not with bloat ware and stupid overlays.
And last but not least, I buy a phone because of the hw, not the sw, especially if the sw is or should be open source!
What better is there than a community working on the android base (CM / AOKP)?
I h8 the idea of now being forced to wait for a company to bring out new updates to my system, I really do...

As per the title, will I miss the Quad Core? Especially concerned about smoothness in the browser, for example scrolling when viewing flash elements is as if the flash element wasnt there on the One X.

Thanks for the reply mate. How does the battery life compare (screen on times)? And does the Nexus feel "cheap" this is one criticism i see levelled at it a lot. I have the option of the S3 but that does look ugly and cheap (too much chrome and too much shine as well as too much plastic.)
I will miss the One X's looks but I love the look of the Nexus, particularly on the front.
Could you give me a test of browser/flash performance? How is it on the Youtube website scrolling when the video is playing? Are button presses on the flash object (like pressing play/mute/pause) instant? I'm a heavy flash user (cricket/football/Sky Sports streaming) so this is important to me.

Brilliant. Just trying to think of things I could throw at you lot here - I know what works smooth on the One X and what doesn't. For one thing CVG on desktop mode would have lag from when you put your finger on the screen to the actual scroll taking place.
PCgamer.com was also similarly troublesome on the One X.
What "Screen On" times can I expect with a Nexus? I get 3/4 hours on the One X
You'll get comparable screen on times. Most people get in the three to four hour range. Some less though, and I have seen upwards of five plus hours. A lot will depend on your setup and kernel of choice.
The One X is a nice phone, one that would be tempting to me, as I do like Htc's build quality.
The Nexus doesn't feel overly cheap to me or like to much plastic. I think that may be due to the Glass front and I run a cover so that kinds of changes the feel of the textured back to me.
I do really like the dev community and support that the Nexus receives. One of the reasons that it would be hard for me to leave the Nexus.
Good luck in your choice.

Trust me, i owned htc and samsung phones, and since my htc desire days i stopped using stock browsers and dolphin was the main one on all phones that followed. after getting the gnex i was still skeptical about stock browsers, but it's really the best browser i've tried so far, adding to it's speed all the cool stuff like guick controls and inverted screen rendering, u just can't go wrong with it. Furthermore the jelly bean experience is far away from anything available on any other android device out there. I posted a youtube link a while ago about a review for JB on gnex , a part of the review concentrates on browser performance, i'll post the link here as soon as i get to my pc (don't feel like searching over my phone)
Edit: as for screen on times, it depends if u're planing to get the gsm or cdma (verizon/sprint) version. I have a gsm one and on ics i used to get continuosly over 5hrs screen on. On jb it dropped to ~ 4-4.5 hrs , i think Google Now is eating the battery, (giving me navigation and calculating traffic to home) even though i don't need it, and actually i'm still enjoying all these JB features so i guess i'll turn some of those uneeded gnow cards OFF soon, pretty sure it'll improve my battery life more

That review you mentioned above would be great to see.
What JB ROM/Kernel combo would you recommend and could you point me in the direction of the thinnest case for the back of the phone?
I'd be on GSM in the UK BTW.
Does overclocking to the 4460's 1.5ghz massively impact battery life? And how effective is undervolting? I've read you can UV the CPU/GPU and Screen as well as another chip?
For the fella above that had the ONE X would you say the camera/screen is markedly better on the HTC or is it negligible? Screen more important than camera to me.
Also is this colour accuracy patch still in use with many Kernels? The ONE X screen is streets ahead in terms of colour IMO and this seems to certainly help? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521195
Lastly just to reaffirm, scrolling performance with a flash video playing is instantaneous?
Don't even need 1.5ghz. Its smooth at 1036mhz.

I can't say on the Stock Browser with Ics, as I was using Chrome. But on JB with the stock browser, I just opened Youtube, and had no lag at all. Very smooth. I've been really impressed with the improvements to the Stock Browser in JB. I tried Chrome, and it was choppy. With the performance of the Stock Browser, I see no reason to use anything else now though.
What everyone else has said about not needing to overclock. Very true. I run at 1036 with no issues. I will push it up to 1500 if I want to run a bench test, but other than that, there really is no reason for me to OC.
The Gpu can be OC'd. I haven't noticed a lot of difference between 384 and 512. I don't play a lot of labor intense games though. Jelly Defense and Ski Safari are the only two games I have installed at the moment. Even the stock 307 setting works fine for these.
I have tried a few of the Kernels, but have been using Trinity exclusively now for the past few months both on Ics and now on Jb. It's all subjective to personal taste though. If you make the switch, there are many Kernels and roms to choose from, all with there pluses.
I loved MIUI on the HTC Desire, it was fast, stable and just worked.
However i have never heard many good things about it on the Galaxy Nexus, a lot of people say its slow and laggy. from watching most YouTube videos it does appear to be. What are people experiences with it?
The reason i ask is the ViciousMIUI V4.1 Jelly Bean Edition is supposed to be pretty fast and stable. Atleast in this video, however some comments say ". But compared to the stock Jelly Bean ROM (Vicious, Bugless, etc.) it is a lot slower and less fluid than JB. I was took forever to load and seemed kind of buggy to me."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqraqIUenOU
Just wondering if people think its worth going from stock jellybean to MIUI, i do like that everything on my phone just works at the moment, however i do miss MIUI.
Nandroid and try it then let us know.
I actually have tried MIUI on the Gnex. ICS as well as Jellybean. It is working ok, but as you say it's pretty laggy.
So if u love miui I would just try if I were you and then draw you're own conclusions. I have never tried it for a long time, so it's perfectly possible that when the rom settles it will solve the lagging issues.

I have only heard negative things from the ones who has tried MIUI. Buggy and laggy sums it up pretty much.
Heard good things used it for awhile and no problems with it. Minimal lag to me and I didn't have any bugs that bothered me.

Tried it and hated it
mainly because I don't like the UI, but it was pretty smooth and stable if that's what you're looking for.
Not recomended on the GNex...!!!
I loved MIUI on my Galaxy S i9000, in fact it was my favorite ROM on the SGS. but would not recommend it on the GNex...too laggy and you have more feature rich ROMs out there.
mmm
mmm
heard it's pretty and neat,
but kinda laggy atm in JB
OP: Why don't you just try it yourself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31621751
I did end up giving it ago myself, the build on miui.com was pretty laggy and was not totally in English.
The ViciousMIUI V4.1 build was a lot more responsive and had been totally translated from what i could see, it did'nt appear to be as fast as the stock jelly bean is on the nexus, however it did look really nice!
The double unlock screen is annoying though, its a shame you cant just disable the lock screen on MIUI if you have a swipe to unlock pattern set.
At this moment in time i'm just going to stick with the stock Jellybean rom, MIUI just doesn't perform like it did back in the 2.3 days sadly. Although it looks even more awesome and I do miss it after using it now!

Yep I agree... I was a serious MIUI fan back in my Nexus S days but MIUI on Galaxy Nexus makes me feel really bad about it. I downloaded it every week, flashed, then went back to CM. Until the last few versions (especially 2.9.14) that I feel it's getting good enough to be my daily driver :fingers-crossed:
Its nice. The newer releases are better and better. The only complaint I have is when an app is requesting root permission I have to click the dialog box like 6 times. No joke. That alone was a deal breaker for me

I personally don't like it because it looks too much like iOS. And it has no App Drawer -_-

Miui is a full ROM. What you are complaining about is only the launcher, which can be changed like any other.

I feel in a few months it could be there, it does appear a lot better now, I think stock Jellybean really has spoiled me.
I cant help but want the Mi 2 phone Xiomi are going to release, i would expect MIUI to work perfectly on it. However i dont really want to get rid of the Nexus, plus i dont really need a new phone too!
Fingers crossed it keeps improving!

That annoyed me too actually, however i could live with it as im not running apps that need root all the time. I would really like to just have the lock pattern to unlock my phone and not some fancy lock screen too, that's probably my only other deal breaker.
The phone stutters often and it is frustrating! I just switched from the Galaxy Note II to the Galaxy S 4 and simple task like switching between home screens and application screens stutter. Third party applications run perfectly smooth. Face unlock has massive stuttering and I used it on my past devices just fine. The only thing I can think of is that it is powering a 1080P display.
I've been looking around online and all I seen were complaints or people saying they do not experience it. People who have what are some fixes?

Have you tried checking your background apps? Maybe the processor is busy running something else very resource intensive?

Try different home launchers, disable s-voice home button, flash a custom rom. I dont use face unlock. Look some more, and post questions in the questions section.

Guess it depends on whether you use any of that stuff. I don't use of it. I got the phone for the hardware and the screen.
Cm10.1 = absolutely lag free. Bar none. What bugs are you referring to? I'm solid over here.

The simple fact that you downgrade from the tw camera to the aosp camera is enough for me. Plus the fact that when you record video the volume is way lower. There was also a call bug that sometimes you or the other person couldn't hear each other ( I'm not sure but I think it was fixed). Cm was great for me when I had the Motorola Triumph since the triumph sucked, but cm has always had issues on all my phones that I've owned. Honestly people say it's so much smoother but I don't see a difference from tw and cm.

No bugs on my end. Could care less about the camera, and yes, the smoothness is apparent as soon as you flash cm. Anyone can tell you that. The only reason to go with TW is the features.
It just depends on personal preference.

I flashed the 4.3 Google Edition ROM and it is butter smooth along with the face unlock. So maybe it is not the 1080p display. I also noticed ram usage dropped by a good 50%. The TW ROM uses around 900mb-1.1Gb probably due to the bloatware that was on it. A Google Edition phone for only $580 I am happy.

It's apparently Touch Wiz that makes the phone laggy.I'm expecting Samsung to make this less of an issue with updates since it is a new phone but I didn't want to wait.
I flashed the Infamous rom since I am not willing to give up the Samsung camera features. Then I use Nova launcher within it and it runs much faster.
Horrible touchwiz is what causes the lag, flashed GE ROM. BUTTER SMOOTH, I don't use the Samsung gimmicky features and the only camera mode I use is HDR that's included in the GE ROM
Super smooth, super stable, great battery life, more ram, win!!!

Bro if you flash Omega v7 from the "i9505" forums and right after you flash omega, flash ktoonz kernel for the TMOBILE s4, the phone runs BUTTER i mean BUTTER smooth.

I did that earlier, but my WiFi wouldn't turn on. Someone explained how to switch radios through oden, but that's a pain.

I installed the ktoonz kernel on my otherwise stock 4 and it is absolutely 100% smoother.
Stock S4 here with Nova Launcher, NO LAG, here my crappy video, LOL.

Beside the lag has the heat given any of you some trouble? I noticed the phone heats up quicker than any of my previous phones but it doesn't seem to cause any harm to performance.

I've had 2 M919 Galaxy S4's so far.
First one I returned because it was so incredibly laggy, everyone said theirs was butter smooth (all of whom were in denial), I thought I had a defective device. I tried all the custom roms using the Tmobile base and also international 9505 roms. Still did not fix the microstutters. Second one was laggy as hell also out of the box so I knew it was just the device. The latest international 9505 roms seem to make the phone smoother, but there are microstutters still present which should NOT BE THE CASE with a phone that's this powerful, but the biggest offender for me still is web browsing.
Open up the stock browser or chrome and go to theverge.com website, call up the full site and browse around. Pinch and zoom, then pan around. Tell me how incredibly slow it is to use. It seems like I'm using my original Motorola Droid all over again.
I'm sure by the time the Galaxy S5 comes around, Samsung "might" finally come out with a smooth working firmware for the S4, in the meantime I say ditch this device and get the HTC One. That baby is liquid smooth in EVERY operation and rips the S4 a new butt hole when it comes to web browsing smoothness and speed. Hell it even still supports full Adobe Flash even with 4.2.2.
The One is also pushing a 1080P screen so it's not the pixel count that is slowing the S4 down. It's something else. I had initially blamed the S4 lagging because of 4.2.2, reason is on my Note 2 running 4.1.2 it had next to zero lag and it's also running a heavy TW skin. I thought the HTC One was so smooth because it was still on 4.1.2. Well after updating to 4.2.2 on the HTC One, it even GOT SMOOTHER and FASTER.
I have also ran the google edition ROM's on both my S4 and my HTC One, and guess what?? The HTC ONE ran the pure GE ROM smoother than the S4 still!
The GE ROM still has slight microstutter on the S4 which is mind boggling. I noticed it a few times when opening the dialer and gmail app, the animation has a bit of microstuter in the animation when opening up. Something is definitely up with the S4 hardware wise.

I just opened up 20+ apps and didn't get not one micro stutter, running GE ROM. Also Im not in denial cause I hated the TW micro stutter when opening apps. My browser is BUTTER smooth, it rarely gives white spots and its 1 to 1 with my finger. I love it.
