TWRP 2.1.2 for the Hercules! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

TeamWIN has released TWRP recovery for the Samsung Hercules!
For those who do not know, TWRP is a touchscreen, GUI based recovery, akin to CWM touch.
Credits to the people who put the CWM flashable zip together:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Backups/nandroids made with CWM do NOT work with TWRP. I would suggest installing the recovery while on a stable rom (Gingerbread), making a backup, then installing the ICS roms.
TWRP is also themeable - search around for TWRP 2.X themes and you will find plenty.
To use themes, rename the zip file to ui.zip (if it doesn't already have that name) and place it in /sdcard/TWRP/theme [create the directory if necessary].
If you're looking for a great ics theme, check out my theme at the bottom of the post [based on this.
[Studies show that this does NOT cause bricks. Any bricks that were caused were found to be due to user error/that leaky ICS skyrocket rom. However, as always, exercise caution when flashing roms/kernels/modems/etc...]
[Further, this recovery seems to work as well or better than CWM Touch or standard CWM for flashing AOSP roms (CM9/AOKP). If you plan to flash one of those, you would be better off using this recovery.]
[With this recovery, it does not seem to be necessary to use Darkside Super Wipe/Fix Permissions script. The built-in wipe/fix works just as well.]

SWEETness. i like this recovery a lot more than clockwork mod.. at least the versions i used on the HTC sensation 4g
my favorite recovery was 4EXT or something like that, but team win makes a good one
BTW,
this works on our device, just change the first line of the update-script file to this:
assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "SGH-T989" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "SGH-T989" || getprop("ro.product.board") == "MSM8660_SURF");
(or just erase the whole first line)
thanks for sharing!
frescoraja
EDIT:
it's pretty awesome, a touch screen GUI recovery with a lot of options CWM doesn't have.. just make the edits to the update-script like i said above, rezip it, flash it ! sorry i can't post screenshots, no camera besides my phone!

Cool not to familiar with updating scripts so I guess I will wait.

No, I'm not sure, but from the description of what they did it seems like there could be a problem with the recovery. Check out the skyrocket thread. If it is found to be user error I will remove the false alarm

TWRP Pulled the files from the market and their downloads.. This recovery can and will cause bricks..
Here's a picture of what happens... After using reboot to recovery in twrp recovery, phone reboots & walla, phone is bricked and shows up as QHUSB_DLOAD.

To bad cause this thing is awesome.

Rom:
I present tFD24 rom.
1. Touch of ICS theme by Tiffany84
2. Added AOSP gallery for nice widget
3. Changed settings background to GNex scaled grey (thanks Ben's for help and research)
4. Changed touch sound to GNex sound (thanks Ben's for help and research)
5. Removed boot sound
5. Silenced Camera.apk as much as I could. It does make sound only when getting focus. No shutter sound, no recording sound on video.
6. Removed stock boot animation
7. Added International SGS II Boot animation.
8. Added app to switch between MTP and USB storage.
9. Removed bloatware.
Added tweaks:
1. Added VM managment.
2. Internet speed
3. Battery tweaks in buid.prop and in init.d
4. Kernel tweaks in init.d (hope it works as planned).
5. Low memory management.
6. Tweak to help phone to go to deep sleep when idle.
If you need tether you should fall back to wifi tether for root users for now.
Installation instructions:
1. Download rom zip file.
2. Download modem zip file (optional)
3. Copy files to root of your sd card
4. Boot into recovery.
5. Do a NAND back up (optional but strongly recomended).
6. If you still running any GB build flash/apply Calkulin's format all zip. This step can be skipped if you running ICS builds. I have tried flashing this rom over FD10 ICS rom and had no problems. Also I have flashed rom after using Calk's format all script. No problems either.
7. Apply rom zip in recovery.
8. Apply modem zip in recovery.
9. Boot to system.
tFD24_v0.1.0
1. http://d-h.st/Y0k Odexed Rom.
2. http://d-h.st/TMG Deodexed Rom
Rom comes with Team Rogue FD02 repacked kernel with CWM recovery and init.d support.
If you want to run completely stock themed rom here is zip file to flash stock
FD24 kernel:
http://d-h.st/zv1 Stock FD24 kernel (no CWM recovery)
Please note that if you flash this kernel init.d scripts will not run and you will not have some of the tweaks.
I made a flashable zip for modem for those of you who want to flash it in recovery.
You can download modem here:
http://d-h.st/Gch
Here are links to removed app zip files:
1. http://d-h.st/sow Removed Odexed Apps.
2. http://d-h.st/KDQ Removed DeOdexed Apps.
If you want any of removed apps back download the zip file. Delete any app you don't want from /system/app folder using 7z and flash rest of it in recovery.
Please note if you are on odexed rom with any app you delete you should delete the .odex file as well.

It looks like this should be around long enough for someone to be interested to repack the kernel.
I'm ready to learn but so far no one showed interest to walk me thru.
I hope there will be now problems with rom or downloads since I'm about to go out.

(at least with ROMs) the aroma script can get stuck where anytime the aroma installer is called it can use the stuck script. so when the updated script comes out then the old one might still get called
EDIT: what is the latest on our phone? do we have CWM 6 yet?

got that from your ROM page
i dont believe it happens with TWRP, it hasn't been reported on TWRP but it has with CWM. it wasn't on this device so it could be device specific
EDIT: it might be best to warn user that it has been reported before and if something uses the aroma installer that they should greatly consider using TWRP instead

There really isn't a specific answer to that. Choose whichever modem works best for you and the area you're in. I tried LG8 but it wasn't as reliable for me as LG2. The best thing would be to test each one out for at least a day or two.

Introduction:
Team Win Recovery Project 2.3, or twrp2 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. We started from the ground up by taking AOSP recovery and loading it with the standard recovery options, then added a lot of our own features.
It’s a fully touch driven user interface – no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.
Key Features:
-Built In File Manager
-Touchscreen driven with real buttons and drag-to-scroll
-XML-based GUI that allows full customization of the layout – true theming!
-Settings are saved to the sdcard and persist through reboots
-Ability to choose which partitions to back up and which to restore
-Ability to choose to compress backups – now with pigz (multi-core processor support for faster compression times)
-Onscreen keyboard
-Decryption of /data
-Easy selection of internal/external storage
-See changelog below for 2.3 features
Current Issues:
USB to PC mount not working :/
Device assert issue - some packages wont install

the greater good will the twrp version that you have work with any one of the roms here or is there a specific rom that the twrp is supposed to be flashed with. Also can you give me an easier way to root. can you also put together an auto root which would install either clock work mod or twrp with super su in an automated package that i can flash through odin an then from there go to ggoo manager and then flash the rom, gapps an the curnal once these are in more stable releases. I truely appreciate all the great work that you do on all of these package just would like to now have an automated proces to do all this and then there will be even more people wanting to go through the approach of rooting and flashing when there is an automated way. automation is much easy and can make things much easier for a new bee. again thanks for the great work that you and the d mand all the other developers who i dont know there names but will giv them credit all the time for wonderful and awsom projects.
Nice work!
2 files? the firs is via odin right? what is more recommendable? odin or CWM flashable? I want to try it

The CWM flashable worked fine for me. Backup and restore worked well on both internal and external memory, although when it finishes backing up, it won't let me go back, so I have to pull the battery, then it boots back into TWRP and I can finish what I'm doing. It also installs zips just fine. All in all, this recovery is pretty good.

I saw you said USB mounting doesn't work, does that mean ADB doesn't work as well, or is ADB separate? I tend to adb file transfer ROMS and such through recovery so there is less going on (slightly faster transfer I've noticed)

AzraelsKiss said:
I tried that in the keyboard lights fix for cm10.1, but it didn't help. I've tried a few hacks to the installer script, but it keeps failing out. I'm gonna go with my original theory that my phone is a bit "special". No worries though. Once I added the system folder from the keyboard lights fix to the LiteKernel-4.2-20130113.zip and flashed that, I now have keyboard lights, so all is well with the "special" phone for now.

I do hope you realize if I thought it was truly an issue with TWRP, I wouldn't keep saying that my phone is "special". I don't remember demanding anyone to fix this for me. I was just providing my view of things, while I try to fix my issues myself. Please forgive me for my indiscretions. I will remove the offending posts.
BTW... I removed the lines in the updater-script as thegreatergood suggested, and resigned the zip, and cm10.1-keyboard-lights-fix installs for me now. I'll attach the resigned zip, so you can check it out. I'm not an expert at all this, so I'd suggest to just use the file as an example, although it hasn't yet broke the "special" phone, as far as I can tell so far.
I am having an issue after backing up, it seems I cannot get back to the main menu & have to force reboot using the power button. Was wondering if anyone else is having this issue?

I have the same issue, but others aren't, so it seems like it may only be an issue with some phones.

This zip is AROMA Installer enabled, so it gives you the option to install 3 recoveries, TWRP, CWM, or CWM Touch.
No more need to store a bunch of flashable zips to switch recoveries (no offense to @Naddict, because his flashable zips are awesome!)
All with the help of a nice UI called AROMA Installer so that you have the option to choose recovery at runtime.
Features
Choice of 3 recoveries to install at runtime
Option to "reboot recovery" after the new recovery is flashed
Customized recovery choices available upon request!
Thanks/Credits to:
Dees_Troy - TWRP
koush - CWM
koush - CWM Touch
amarullz - AROMA Installer
NOTE: Flashable zips with customized recovery choices are available on request if there's a specific version you prefer

Go to the install menu and select the zip you downloaded
Wait for AROMA Installer to open up and then choose one of the three recoveries to flash

This will make troubleshooting others problems so much easier! How are you installing the recoveries? Are they done using naddict's flashable zips? How difficult would it be too add preview versions of twrp and cwm?

I'm doing it the same way boot.img's are flashed, by extracting the .img file to /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery which is the symlinked to /dev/block/mmcblk0p18, AKA the recovery partition. If that's how he does it, then yes, but I haven't bothered to look honestly
And as long as thr .imgs are provided, no it would not be hard at all, PM me if you want a custom one
EDIT: To get more detailed, its actually a very simple setup.
If you look inside the zip, you'll see a "recovery" folder
The aroma installer saves your recovery selection to /tmp/aroma-data/recovery.prop like this:
Code:
rloc=<recoveryName>.img
The updater script reads in the value of rloc, and does this:
Code:
package_extract_file("recovery"+file_getprop("rloc", "/tmp/aroma-data/recovery.prop"), "/dev/block/xxxxxxx")
So thr updater script doesnt actually know what its flashing...it just extracts that path in the package to the recovery partition
Updated to v1.1
5.12.13 - v1.1
Code improvements
Nice work. Especially since different recoveries seem better suited for different roms and this makes switching on the fly even easier.

[MOD][ZIPTHEMER-KK-PSX-SLIMKAT-CNANDY] iOS7 Signal + Carrier on statusbar

So, I made this modification to SystemUI.apk and changed default signal icons to these iOS7-like, personally I searched for it A LOT, and only found a patch for Samsung Galaxy S4, no lucky for universal patch so I made it myself on KitKat's SystemUI.apk and patched it for everyone who's also been looking forward to it (Nexus 4 and XHPDI phones users only, for now)

can you make a zipthemer or similar thingy? makes it safer for guys with modifed systemui and not having those glithches on some custom/stock roms? just a suggestion. ☺

It's a shame they're not on the left side of the status bar. I wonder if they code would be the same as it was in JB to change it. I'm still on 4.3

I'll try, but meanwhile people with non-AOSP or Stock Vanilla shouldn't do this mod
EDIT: DONE

download the apk, extract the .pngs and paste 'em in your SystemUI.apk and I think it's even simpler as in android the left side is where apps's icons are, but that's not my intention with this mod
can someone confirm if the flashable zip attached in the first post is working?
