[Q] Backup without root? - Acer Iconia Tab A100

I want to backup all of my apps so I can have a clean ICS installation. But I would prefer not to root the tablet. Is there any way to do a backup and restore of apps and data without root?
If I do root and use something Titanium Backup, can I select which apps I want to restore the data for or does it just restore everything?

AFAIK, you can't back up apps unless you use something like Titanium backup. And yes, you can select which apps you want to backup/restore.

On an individual app, can you choose to restore the app without restoring the data? I don't want to restore the problems that I think a particular app is causing. For other apps, I really want to restore the data and personal settings.

adb withn ICS is capable of backing up data without root. I haven't tried it yet but the newest adb binary is needed. There is also an option in Developer Optionsfor desktop password protection. I'd suggest searching google or here on xda to see how it works.

Titanium Backup

Hey,
I have a question about Titanium Backup. If I understand it properly I have to lose all my apps and data to install or update a new ROM - full wipe - if necessary. Of course I may use Titanium backup but that is quite long process to restore all apps and data again, right? Do I need to tap on restoring every single app to install it etc.? AND may I restore system data as well or it makes no sense when the ROM needs a full wipe?
I really do not understand this properely. I am quite confused.
Thanks.

When I do a full wipe for a new ROM, google/market will reinstall all the apps I had and I just restore the missing apps/games that I had settings or saves for. I'd recommend to do a full backup and try yourself to see what works for you.
do not make a system backup cause it'll give you only loads of fc. Backup only installed apps. You don't have to restore app by app if you have a titanium backup pro or donate than it's doing everything for you.
If you are switching roms, you should only restore apps+data.
There is a batch mode that allows you to restore all of it at one go.
I haven't used system yet but i'm guessing you could restore some of you system setting if you do a factory reset?
You can always use something like appbrain to sync you apps again, then use titanium backup just to restore the data.

I do this after each full wipe and new rom - it's a single click batch operation using the free version of Ti.

this is why we have Titanium Backup...
1. use it to backup all user apps + data
2. nandroid backup
3. full wipe, flash new rom
4. install TB if the ROM doesn't come with it, then restore all user apps + data
don't backup and/or restore system data betwen ROMs, as they're often incompatible and will screw things up
No, You need to delete them, but the poster above me has the solution

Back your app data only (you can sync contacts and calendar from Gmail) and restore after you have installed all your apps. TB is not compatible with all ROMa, you can have problems. Use NANDROID backups to investigate which way works best.
Cheers

good point, though have not known of TB incompatibilty between roms.
@honglajiao you might as well still backup all user apps and data, because TB can still restore the data separately.
in addition to using google to backup/sync contacts, SMS backup+restore (free in market) is good for texts.
and once again, don't backup/restore system data!

+1 for SMS backup and restore. Simple, but excellent.
Cheers
There is a way to try and that is to delete dalvik-cache between flashing roms. But because of the huge difference in design of roms nowadays, it is difficult to implement. Supernova does not require a wipe before flashing because my script migrates even Froyo to Gingerbread without issues..
You can use the ic scirpt to install your apps at boot and tb to restore data.

titanium backup restore - lookout security scan

I just flashed calk's 3.0 rom. When I started to reinstall my apps my phone asked do I want lookout security to scan my apps before installing. I choose yes. When I went to restore my backup from titanium backup it stops and scans each app and then asks me if I want to install the app. Does anyone know how to change the setting back to normal where titanium does a restore and then once the restore is complete lookout scans all the apps just install. Its very annoy to have to say yes on every app installed during the backup
I had to really think outside the box for this one so bear with me here... perhaps you can try installing Lookout AFTER restoring your backups.
Crazy idea I know, but it just might work.

Just a question about Titanium. When you restore after the wipe did you just did a complete retore. I have the pro version ang wanting to do ICS rom which requires a factory reset

Does Nandroid also restore your rom version?

I like to play around with different roms but at the same time, I have next launcher as my default and did a lot of customization etc.. to the phone. I do make a nandroid backup but never had to use it. But i'm also tired of spending hours customizing the looks of my phone each time. I use mybackup to backup logs, text ect...
So I understand that nandroid brings the phone back to the last working stage but does that mean to the previous roms modems etc. as well?
If so, are there any backup programs or process I can do to completely backup all my settings of apps and phone but not the rom and modem?
Yes. It's called Titanium Backup. It's in the Google Play store. It will backup all or selected apps as well as each app's settings, etc.
Also when you do a nandroid backup (with TWRP recovery) there are options to include or exclude backing up the modem etc.
Yes a nandroid backups everything. I just have to select the modem to be backed up if u use twrp

How about the Rom? I want to exclude the roms and just want to backup the phone settings and app settings.
With titanium you can backup your launcher and it's configuration, also all of the user apps plus system apps but it is Not RECOMMENDED, TOTALLY ADVISED AGAINST TO RESTORE SYSTEM APPS WITH It... Backup your sms, call log, wifi access points and only user apps, then flash wipe and flash your new room, boot into it, run the initial setup without restoring from Google, get titanium from play store, restore missing user apps with data (batch restore), then sms, wifi access points and call log if you wish from xml, good luck!

Does Backup/Restore through TWRP Backup/Restore your apps?

Quite simple. I don't know what Backup/Restore through TWRP actually does, if it backs up the whole phone or if it just backs up your apps, or if you can have it do either.
My Note 4 is rooted and I really hate changing ROMs just because I end up having to re-install my apps. It's a PITA.
Is there really an easier, quicker way of doing things when I switch ROMs? Can I backup/restore my apps with TWRP? If not, then what about with Titanium Backup Pro? I have that as well. I've been manually restoring my apps each time I change ROMs.
TWRP makes copies of the entirety of the selected backup partitions (Whole Phone), using Titanium backup onto your SD card would probably be the best option for backing up apps.
The correct way is you should do both. You only need to do twrp backup once to have a full image of your phone. This is very helpful if your new rom crashed. You just need to restore the twrp image and you will have your phone back exactly the same setup before the crash. Second, you also need a full backup of all your apps with Titanium Backup, this helps you to restore all the apps back to the new rom. Make a note here, if you flash a new OS version, like 5.1 lollipop to 6.0 MM, do not restore app data, instead, just restore the apps only. Apps force closed if you restore app data.

Titanium backup has a setting that allows you to make TWRP flashable zips . It allows you to do the operation as a batch as well so you could make a single zip with all the apps you want restore or you could do them individually or in specific groups. Since your rom selection is based upon system Img. This should work unless you went from a Touchwiz to Aosp base.
