Hey, I'm new here, and just got a HTC Desire recently, I mistakenly updated to Froyo before I knew that I couldn't root and now I want to try downgrading my HBoot to 0.8 so that I can root.
I want to follow this:
htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2934
But I need a RUU (No idea what it is really) to do that, so I'm looking at this list:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 but I honestly have no idea how I can see which one I need to download, so can anyone help me out there? Where can I see it on my phone? I believe it's unbranded and all that.
You can't. You're stuffed until someone breaks the new HBoot, which may be never.
mate, i understand you're new, but please read forum rules.
hboot 0.92 is not downgradeable at the moment, as explained on some already opened threads...
unfortunately, you'll have 2 wait.
Well, it looks like someone succeeded in downgrading from 0.75 to 0.66 without doing any such breaking? I'd like to try it just to confirm, what harm can it do? Haven't seen anyone actually having tried that way?
I also did read forum rules, I'm not asking for a way to downgrade it, just asking for some information in how I choose what RUU I need? >.<
no, the rule was to search before posting a new topic.
there's another thread with discussions about this subject: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741672
Aye mate, I did search before, I've been browsing around for most of the day, what I'm asking is how do I see what RUU I need to download for my phone, not how do I downgrade HBoot.
but mate, whichever RUU you get won't fit because you have updated your HBOOT to 0.92. that's what's being discussed in the thread I pointed you...
if you dare reading...
Yeah, I'm reading, and I saw that the method was tried, I'm still interested in what a RUU is
And sorry about that, I only read like around the latest pages, not the first 2, which was the one it was on >.<

Hope this helps! )

there's no point in having rules and manuals if people are lazy enough to bypass them every time they have a doubt.
anyway, feeling better now andrea? relieved maybe?
enjoy your week.
lol !
yes dmpwd, I was already feeling quite well, waiting for Paul's rom as many others...i came to delete my post because it was going to be taken negatively, but I like the kindness that comes between the lines of your answers....FYI I am now quite amused, thanks!

Is there not also a rule about flaming?
Would hardly call a copy paste of the rules for flaming..
But if you saw it as that, then i apologize.
Just getting tired of post after post asking the same things by newly registered users.
I wish that reading and searching had first priority, instead of spamming the board with countless new topics.

The rules are there for a reason, let's not forget that! To be honest, these forums are starting to get less and less useful, because of the amount of redundant threads that are being started.
If we had more robust/regular moderation, this would be less of an issue, but it seems we don't have a Desire-owning mod!

Yeah, and I did search before posting, I think people just got the question "How do I downgrade from 0.92" instead of my original question that asked what RUU I'd need to get for my phone, if it was possible. Lol.
And also, I wonder how the hell this topic got onto rules and stuff like that, so lets just leave it at this
I have received a surprising number of PMs in response to my App thread [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973921] from newbies who say they are PMing because they are unable to reply to threads. One even said he couldn't post till he had 10 posts (how the heck could he get 10 posts if he can't post?). I thought newbies couldn't post links for a certain period or number of posts... but I have slept since then and the site has changed some.
What gives? I read the FAQ and all I found was that in most forums you have to be a registered member to reply or post new topics. Are these newbies just mistaken about the rules, if so is there some way to better explain the posting rules?

We have an informative notice to users when they try to do this.
New users (<10 posts) can't post in development areas. What you could do, is make a "support" thread outwith development. The problem was that we were getting thousands of pointless posts from people in development areas, causing endless trouble in moving them and dealing with the flaming that continued...
Once they have 10 posts outwith development areas, they can post in dev forums within 1 hour of that time. A support thread outwith that section, with a prominant link in the first post might help, and it's the method I will be using myself.

Must follow the rules, thank you.
I have the same issue and found out about the 10 posts rule, yet something confused me, a "new member" (Labeled as Junior Member" was able to post in the development area for a Rom thread with only having >5 posts. I saw two posts of his in this thread and he only had total of 4 posts...I tried to post in the same thread and wasn't allowed to because i have fewer than 10 post...oh and his post is only a day or two old.. what gives??
noted ...sir
This stupid rule forces me too post in pointless threads for me. It's just too much hassle to post in threads you really don't care about just to be able to post in your desired development thread.

The recommended way is to post in Q&A instead of development, and I tried it. Obviously no one from the development thread is going to be informed of my post automagically, so I went on contacting the kernel dev, leading to the same situation as the OP, meaning an unwanted PM to a busy dev...
Yeah I don't want to keep bugging deva through pm. Only reason for me to post in other threads.

I perfectly agree with you, sir, and find the present thread particularly handy in that respect. Of course, I would never post anything just for the sake of reaching a post count of 10, but it appears that light conversation about the ins and outs and philosophy of the XDA rules does help towards that goal, isn't it wonderful?
And hooooo didn't I just discover another thoughtful anti-noob restriction ? It appears that, in order to increase my verbia... to increase the quality, grammar and punctuation of posts, and more importantly, to avoid easy mass spamming, XDA requires non-mod-approved users to wait a total of five minutes between two posts. Specifically, the following message appears:
To prevent spam to the forums, new users must wait five minutes between posts. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed.

(HA, yes, I admit that I am just training to use the quote function here, and that the above snippet of text does not bring much to the conversation, but eh, isn't it a positive side effect of the anti-noob-spam rule, that I get to train proper formatting of posts?)

Congratulations on your first post, komusic.
I shall also note that the 5 minutes between posts limitation makes that a minimum of 50 minutes is necessary for anyone to reach the infamous tenposts milestone after which the golden doors of the dev forums posting will open under our ungrateful greasy little noobish fingers. Hence, this is also a test of patience. We shall consider ourselves monks, in fact. Apprentices.
So can anyone explain why a member with >10 posts can post in the development area? The posts are recent, just yesterday and the day before
So, a couple of people on IRC (myself included) noticed that we couldn't access the Paid Software board. Is there some sort of restriction on entering it?

QUOTE: 50+ posts and a years membership for creating a thread.
I am not understanding what has happened with access to the Paid Software forum at all! I noticed yesterday that I had lost access to be able to read the Paid Software forum. I contacted a mod, thinking I had somehow gotten banned, even though I have never posted in that forum. I was told that too many users with less than 50 posts/1 year tenure were posting in that forum, so the access has been changed...
What am I missing here? Because other members have been posting in that forum when they shouldn't, I can no longer even read that forum? This makes ABSOLUTELY no sense to me! Can't users be restricted from posting in a forum if they don't meet the requirements? Because SOME members have been abusing that forum, ALL members with less than 50 posts and one year membership are now blocked from even READING that forum? (Or have to log out to do so).
I don't understand how this serves anybody...

There was a change made to the Paid Apps forum yesterday to restrict people not meeting the defined requirements from creating new threads. People didn't read, and we got tired of constantly removing these threads.
However, nobody should be restricted from viewing the forum or replying to existing threads. I will follow up with the server admin to see what's going on with it.

This is a legitimate question for the q/a forum...if they choose to lock it that is their prerogative. I have never made any trouble on this site...there is little reason. This post is not meantt to be inflammatory, I just genuinely want to know if XDAS part in our quest for root is over or not...I am not breaking any forum rules in posting this.
So do people still plan to work on the note 4 using this forum or is there somewhere else I should be focusing my attention to?

Because of the nonsense that goes on in root threads, no developer in their right mind will post any efforts in one of the threads in General. This is why developers have taken their efforts off of XDA and in private chats...and now no one learns anything here.
And no, you are not breaking rules by asking but you opened a thread where all the non-helping people from the other threads will have a place to go. So I am sure they will be quite proud to post something here to get this locked too.
Now Root will never be achieved, sadly.

As Kenny stated here. This is the best course to take. We know most of you guys think we are being jerks, but the bottom line is that thread is/was and would continue to be out of hand. Just because that thread is locked for now, does not mean devs are going to stop collaborating and find a method.

Whoa, excuse me . I read your post and found no value in it. I merely made a statement (not even remotely regarding your profound post.) We paid a substantial amount of money for this phone. I also paid for the stupid XDA premium app to support the XDA community. I also have contributed much money to many devs in the past for previous phones I've owned. I believe I have a right to be kept in the know. Whether the know is what exploit developers are using to find root or useless banter from idiotic foreigners and newbs who have no idea what is going on is completely regardless. It's a public forum. The thread was posted in the general section. There was no warning in the title that it was a "Dev thread only." It wasn't just the idiots who were posting dumb comments, it was a lot of the ATT Note 4 Community that would post 4-5 replies after the "are we there yet?" posts that got the thread shut down. I enjoyed the thread, I learned a lot about exploits that I wouldn't have ever thought to research on my own. It was purely entertainment for me and it was taken away because the moderation can never handle anything properly.

This is a big site, 100s of threads go unanswered every day.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/find-threads/unanswered
Not much can be done about that.
Search for threads that have been active.
Most people that visit this site never post more than a few times.
Very few that do post do not watch for new threads.
You just have to describe your problem well and wait.

Also, don't keep creating new threads, you are more likely to lose any interest in your issue than gain.
If you have made progress or have more details reply to the same thread to bump it up, and update title and original post (post #1)

is it possible to pay a moderator or a smart person to help me with my tablet problems?

In general offering a reward or payment for help is allowed, but often has little effect on getting an actual solution. You really need help from someone familiar with your device and similar issue, that may be a very small number.

And trust me we're willing to answer without you paying us (And personally I refuse to get paid).
What I think when I see a question thread:
Why does the title means nothing... next.
Alright, I have no infos in the OP, next.
Ok that one has more infos, but that's device specific. I'm going to point him the right forum so he can get an answer. Next.
That one is perfect: has a good title, infos, a general question. The thing is that problem is way too niche. Idk the answer straight away...
-->I don't know how to solve it. Let's test some things and see how it goes
-->Sorry not enough time to commit, next.
Oh my god that one didn't even searched before posting, I'd like to set the record straight, but that's a newbie, I'll pass this time...NEXT!
What! Another one that didn't search?! How complicated could it be. I'm literally gonna link him to www.google.com and he does the rest. next...
Title: "Love Mariage Specialist Baba Ki Punjab +01234567789"
Alright, it's ban hammer time !
And so on....
If you made a post in the Q'n'A section put a link to it here I'll see if I can help with that

Negative, XDA does not offer paid technical services!
And if someone did offer a paid service it'd be against the rules of this private platform, and actions would be taken accordingly. This does not only apply to posts on the site but also to conversations.

The buying, selling, trading and / or exchanging of any item is now prohibited on XDA, in any forum or via Private Messages. We now use www.swappa.com
8. Donations.
As a user, you're allowed to ask for donations in your signature as a thank you for your hard work, however donations up front are not allowed. This forum is about sharing and not about getting paid to do something... that is what your job is for.
