A few weeks ago I started to have this problem; i'm ussually connected to the HDSPA network, but the phone turns data off all the time and the only way to get the signal back is rebooting (even turning on and off plane mode doesn't solve it). Calls work perfectly.
I'm on stock 4.0.4, no modified kernels or roms. My carrier is Simyo, Spain.

That´s not my problem; the phone functions work great all the time, but data connection goes off. It happened when I was on 4.0.2 and now on 4.0.4 the issue is still there.
I too am having this same issue with a GSM Galaxy Nexus on stock yakju 4.0.4, but I'm in Canada on the Bell network, and did change the radio to the one they install on their phones.
I've been having this same problem just in the last day or two, ever since I enabled NFC. 4.04, stock kernel, calls go through as normal but no network data. When I disable NFC, everything is back to normal. Anyone else notice conflict with NFC enabled?

I believe this is with the 4.0.4 IMM76D build, it's fixed on 4.0.4 IMM76I.
Again, what the OP has reported, and I am experiencing the same, is that network connectivity does not drop, rather that at least in some scenarios (as is my experience with NFC enabled) network data drops. Really curious if anyone else out there has seen the same on the most recent build and in particular if anyone else has seen a conflict with NFC enabled.
Try matching your radio interface layer with the radio version. This app will help

My baseband and RIL match. Now i'm using franco m4 but the problem persists.

RIL and baseband matching here too. Thx for suggestion though. Handy little app too.
Unrelated, perhaps.
Sorry, but this might not be related: I have an issue with the phone going into 2G when I'm at work -- 23rd floor office. I must manually change it to 2G/Edge every time. All the other folks around me seem to continue without issue and are able to make calls although their signal isn't too hot. GetRIL says baseband and RIL match. I'm using XXLA2 on AT&T in NYC.
Tried searching around for a solution, but I'm not finding anything.
I had the data drop issue as well, not sure if this is related, but around the same time I matched up my RIL, I also switched from francokernel to glados. I have been using glados 1.34 & have not had the issue since.

I've noticed that data connection seems to drop when I switch apps. Does this happen to anybody else? Whenever I switch from one app to another, say from Chrome to Twitter, data connection is lost and then reconnects in about 5 to 10 seconds. There's been occasions when I've lost network signal completely and the only fix, other than to reboot, seems to be to turn airplane mode on and to turn it off again.
I have a GSM Gnex. Is this a hardware problem or will it be fixed with 4.0.5?

Is it me or do I seem to always have an issue with data and my phone. There are many times when I go to pick it up to use and the data, either 3G or 4G, is greyed out.
I've noticed it even if I switch my phone to CDMA only.
Any suggestions on how to fix it other than the obvious reboot or airplane mode?
Unfortunately, this might just be reception issues in your area. I have no LTE problems where I live.
That's what I'm thinking. The phone may just not know what mode to chose cause I'm in between the two.
I have to bump this thread. I'm sick of this. I can hardly ever send MMS messages when I'm on WiFi.
I'm not in a 4G area, that I know. I was successful in updating my PRL which I thought fixed my issue, but didn't.
It's not like I have no signal, 1 bar, -90dBm in my house. Even switching the phone to 3G only doesn't fix this. Rebooting is my only option, as turning on airplane mode doesn't help.
Does anyone else have issues connecting to data? I'm tempted to root, just to flash a new(er) radio, but I don't feel like restoring my phone.
Have you tried updating to the new radio?

I live in a spotty 4g area so its constantly switching from 3g to 4g and before it locks onto one signal it always does the stupid grey bar deal and sometimes it won't lock on at all even though I'm in a strong (3g) area. Restarting the phone works sometimes. All I know is that it better be fixed soon or this phone will be going back.

I thought about taking it in and replacing it.... I don't have any reception issues, just this issue with the phone not wanting to get on data about 50% of the time.
Hey guys. These past few days since I flashed 4.0.4 it feels like something is amiss. I have a very shaky reception and can consider myself lucky if I have tree out of four bars, and while I have three bars, I have no connection to Google sync (the bars are grey)
My father who also has Telia (carrier) on all his phones, has perfect reception all the times without signal loss, however I'm not so lucky. My SIM card doesn't seem to be the problem, so I'm suspecting radio issues. Ever since I started to flash custom ROMs, I've been using the XXLA2 radio which came with the 4.0.4 upgrade. I currently run CM9.
How can I be absolutely sure it's the radio? I'm asking, since I'd really avoid flashing radios.
I was thinking something. I suddenly remember how I don't really run a "full" XXLA2 radio. More like a patched one. When I had flashed stock 4.0.2 yakju on my previously yakjuxw device, and I chose to upgrade through a "ripped" OTA from a guide here on XDA, I noticed the OTA "patched" the radio.
Can that be the issue? That it's patched and not really the full XXLA02 radio?
Update: I reflashed the XXLA02 radio and the problem still persists, so I don't really think it's because of the radio. I'm going to consult Telia about this to see if it's because of them. Strange, though, as my father has almost full reception all the time and he also uses Telia on his three phones.

I get this loud lawn mower type sound when listening to music while using data. It goes basically as loud as my headphones can go and scares the crap out of me. I hardly listen to music anymore just because of it. My wifi doesn't connect to my schools network using EAP. The top half of my display has a different tint than the bottom as well as lots of banding/burn in. Exactly like that Phantom. Is many experience this problem? Maybe everybody with a GNexus? Is this problem serious enough to get a new phone? It's quite disturbing, it feels like my mobile will never be stable.

Hey there,
I have exactly the same problem with GNexus. Wifi works fine, but 3G randomly stops working (can't check email, facebook and browse), reboot does help, but it's very annoying to turn off and on mobile phone. Did anyone manage to fix this problem or did you get a new phone?
Same problem even on 4.2
Hey guys,
I was wondering if you got any news about this as the problem is still persistent on stock 4.2.
One difference I noticed since 4.1 is that the data connection will rapidly switch from 3G to HSPA when the loss of connection appears. It doesn't solve the problem though...
For me, it seems the issue comes when you switch from HSPA to WiFi to HSPA and from HSPA to 2G/Edge to HSPA (and maybe after a long period of HSPA).
Never had a problem in 2G so I force it to avoid the reboot most of the time but it's slow...
I used my Galaxy Nexus on Tmobile in the US and on Free Mobile in France. So it's definitely not a provider problem I guess...
But on these two data plans, I have a limit of HSPA usage (3GB) which then should force the connection to 2G. So would the usage check by the provider would somehow mess up with the data connection?
Anyway, any info on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Max

After having the phone for a year or so, it just decided to go into this "Phantom Airplane mode" Only thing I did recently was I switched to T Mobile Straight Talk sim, because Straight Talk didn't have any more AT&T sim cards and I thought it was the sim card. This is just annoying me. lol. I tried everything, from reflashing to stock rom, to cm10.1, flashed some radios and basebands and nothing. I don't even know if I can get a replacement or fixed because it has been over a year which sucks. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Running stock mysid JRO03O on toro GNex, experiencing not so random soft reboots where the device appears to freeze for several seconds followed the the multicolored Nexus boot logo. System uptime is not affected, battery history shows break. Seems to happen in relation to being on 4G LTE fringe area/international roaming. Both ways. I initially unlocked and installed the leaked OTA, but flashed the Google stock image as soon as it was released, thinking that it was something to do with the OTA leak. My wife's GNex has not exhibited this problem, only difference is that she has hardware version 10. What I have done in the past day is turned off the LTE setting and the problem has not repeated as of yet.

Switched back to LTE/CDMA mode today, and at our kitchen table (where the reboots have always occurred and is in a location that just gets a whiff of LTE signal) the X animation popped up after about an hour of use on WiFi. Some details I've noticed - happens while in a sleep state, always in the same physical location. Also realized one additional difference between my wife's GNex and mine, the she doesn't have Google Now enabled.
Noticed in the change log for 4.1.2 on toro that the board info was changed to radio versions FF02 for CDMA and FF03 for LTE. As this reboot seemed related to LTE/CDMA switching, I wonder if the update will actually roll us back to a slightly earlier radio (I don't believe FF03 was ever rolled out with any of the updates).
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Back to square 1. Soft reboots still happening. No correlation, though occurs in relation to poor signal, app updates (always over WiFi). Reflashed stock boot loader, both radios, and boot image last night. Hopefully that does some good.

Are you running a custom kernel?
You're sure it's a reboot? I was told once before that allot of times the graphic shell crashing is mistaken for a reboot. Considering up time is not affected, I'd say that is plausible.

Radio or location services. Reboot occurs after losing signal in remote/international border areas, while trying to negotiate reconnection. Only occurred after 4.1.1 update, so suspecting the new radios. Can't say the problem is solved, but at least I think I know what's causing the reboots.

We can receive them just not make them. All other calls work. When on 2g or edge it works. I finally found a fix for mine, since my s3is rooted, I reflashed the modem only and mine is fixed. I have the same issue with my stock 4.3 Note 2... not sure what happen during the OTA but im led to assume that with all the newer LTE phones, note 2 users arent the only phones accessing those bands, and something was shifted that creates more instability with wifi calling. I say more instability, as even when I was on 4.1.1/4.1.2 there would be times when friends/family would call/message me when I was connected to certain wifi's (at my girlfriends/etc) and the call would never come through, the messages would receive until I disconneced from the wifi. Even when leaving a voicemail, it was hit or miss for me to get those until I disconnected from wifi.
Not sure if it is a compatibility issue from being connected to edge vs lte vs etc (like you have narrowed down) as it may be a wifi router issue, or just initial bugs with wifi calling in general, considering wifi calling is still (in my mind) in its infancy stage

I have the same issue with my stock 4.3 Note 2... not sure what happen during the OTA but im led to assume that with all the newer LTE phones, note 2 users arent the only phones accessing those bands, and something was shifted that creates more instability with wifi calling. I wouldn't necessarily say WiFi calling is in its infancy. I've been with T-Mobile since before the first android. We had Wi-Fi calling with the 2nd android phone T-Mobile had, the cliq 1. Every phone we have had has had Wi-Fi calling since. The first hiccup we ever had was with the HTC one s. With the note 2 we haven't had a problem until the update. Being an IT tech, I couldn't help but do my own ts, since it was happening to my s3 as well. What we found was it only happens if she makes a call on 4g or LTE going to a phone that has Wi-Fi calling turned on. If that person turns it off and goes to where they actually has signal, the call goes thru fine. My s3 was doing the same, but it is rooted.
We have put several calls into T-Mobile IT dept. That has stumped them badly. They have no idea why this is happening.
On my phone, I finally had the bright idea to reflash just the modem. It worked. No more issues on mine.
I can't root hers(she won't let me), and I know that will fix it by flashing the modem only.
So, sorry for long post, but that is where I'm at. I'm stumped, unless maybe just using Odin to flash the update all over again (like that will happen, she don't like it when I play with her phone).
