Hey guys. These past few days since I flashed 4.0.4 it feels like something is amiss. I have a very shaky reception and can consider myself lucky if I have tree out of four bars, and while I have three bars, I have no connection to Google sync (the bars are grey)
My father who also has Telia (carrier) on all his phones, has perfect reception all the times without signal loss, however I'm not so lucky. My SIM card doesn't seem to be the problem, so I'm suspecting radio issues. Ever since I started to flash custom ROMs, I've been using the XXLA2 radio which came with the 4.0.4 upgrade. I currently run CM9.
How can I be absolutely sure it's the radio? I'm asking, since I'd really avoid flashing radios.
I was thinking something. I suddenly remember how I don't really run a "full" XXLA2 radio. More like a patched one. When I had flashed stock 4.0.2 yakju on my previously yakjuxw device, and I chose to upgrade through a "ripped" OTA from a guide here on XDA, I noticed the OTA "patched" the radio.
Can that be the issue? That it's patched and not really the full XXLA02 radio?
Update: I reflashed the XXLA02 radio and the problem still persists, so I don't really think it's because of the radio. I'm going to consult Telia about this to see if it's because of them. Strange, though, as my father has almost full reception all the time and he also uses Telia on his three phones.

I'm on a full 4.0.4 radio and have always had issues. There comes a time when people need to just accept that the radio hardware sucks. Its always been like that for Samsung devices. I was always told on my Fascinate that a new radio would fix it...nope.

Strange. My dad has a Samsung Galaxy S2 and no problems whatsoever. Perfect reception without signal-loss or loss of connection to Google's servers.
I can't say if I had this issue while on 4.0.2

It's perfect. WiFi isn't handled by the radio, though, it's handled by the kernel. I'm going to see if this clears up by tomorrow. My carrier said they have some breakdowns, and that it was supposed to clear up by tomorrow. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

At least there's a huge chance its not your phone lol. My reception, wifi, display, battery and sound all suck. The other 4 people I know in person that have an LTE nexus have the exact same problems.

It's because of the update 4.0.4 more people have this issue. Google is working on a new update to solve this problem.

Sorry to hear that, bro. My phone's sound is a little dodgy, though, but I'm sure it's nothing a little tweak can't fix.
How about returning the phone for a warranty claim?

The issue is due to the min CPU power being to low to support the radio. If you are rooted you can raise your min CPU level to fix the problem. Anything above 500 seems to work...

I get this loud lawn mower type sound when listening to music while using data. It goes basically as loud as my headphones can go and scares the crap out of me. I hardly listen to music anymore just because of it. My wifi doesn't connect to my schools network using EAP. The top half of my display has a different tint than the bottom as well as lots of banding/burn in. I go from 4 bars 3G to 1 bar and then no data at all and not being able to send texts to having 2 bars 4G and losing that in 3 minutes...I should exchange my phone huh? Lol

I flashed back to stock 4.0.2 and I have the same issues.. and I almost never have signal even when NOT in standby.. right now I'm using bamf and CPU minimum is set to 700.. I'm thinking mine is hardware and not 4.0.4.. I bought the phone 3 days ago on 4.0.4 so I don't know how this phone was behaving before 4.0.4..
I'm just confused.. I've tried everything... was the reception issue only a problem on standby or all the time?
Anyone have any ideas for me to try?

A few weeks ago I started to have this problem; i'm ussually connected to the HDSPA network, but the phone turns data off all the time and the only way to get the signal back is rebooting (even turning on and off plane mode doesn't solve it). Calls work perfectly.
I'm on stock 4.0.4, no modified kernels or roms. My carrier is Simyo, Spain.

That´s not my problem; the phone functions work great all the time, but data connection goes off. It happened when I was on 4.0.2 and now on 4.0.4 the issue is still there.
I too am having this same issue with a GSM Galaxy Nexus on stock yakju 4.0.4, but I'm in Canada on the Bell network, and did change the radio to the one they install on their phones.
I've been having this same problem just in the last day or two, ever since I enabled NFC. 4.04, stock kernel, calls go through as normal but no network data. When I disable NFC, everything is back to normal. Anyone else notice conflict with NFC enabled?

I believe this is with the 4.0.4 IMM76D build, it's fixed on 4.0.4 IMM76I.
Again, what the OP has reported, and I am experiencing the same, is that network connectivity does not drop, rather that at least in some scenarios (as is my experience with NFC enabled) network data drops. Really curious if anyone else out there has seen the same on the most recent build and in particular if anyone else has seen a conflict with NFC enabled.
Try matching your radio interface layer with the radio version. This app will help

My baseband and RIL match. Now i'm using franco m4 but the problem persists.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
RIL and baseband matching here too. Thx for suggestion though. Handy little app too.
Unrelated, perhaps.
Sorry, but this might not be related: I have an issue with the phone going into 2G when I'm at work -- 23rd floor office. I must manually change it to 2G/Edge every time. All the other folks around me seem to continue without issue and are able to make calls although their signal isn't too hot. GetRIL says baseband and RIL match. I'm using XXLA2 on AT&T in NYC.
Tried searching around for a solution, but I'm not finding anything.
I had the data drop issue as well, not sure if this is related, but around the same time I matched up my RIL, I also switched from francokernel to glados. I have been using glados 1.34 & have not had the issue since.

I've noticed that data connection seems to drop when I switch apps. Does this happen to anybody else? Whenever I switch from one app to another, say from Chrome to Twitter, data connection is lost and then reconnects in about 5 to 10 seconds. There's been occasions when I've lost network signal completely and the only fix, other than to reboot, seems to be to turn airplane mode on and to turn it off again.
I have a GSM Gnex. Is this a hardware problem or will it be fixed with 4.0.5?
I signed up with tmobile about two weeks ago and have had no complaints until now. All of a sudden I am having trouble keeping a constant data connection at my place of business. Idk if its my phone or a problem with the local tower but the signal is all over the place while browsing the web. It looks like a strong signal until I go to use data then it drops to nothing. Last week this wasn't a problem at all.
Any tweeks or hardware I can buy to help remedy this?
My phone is completely stock and I am on the 30/month pre paid plan if that makes a difference.
Are there any better radios out that can be installed maybe?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Is WIFI available at your place of business? If you are completely stock I'm assuming you are on GB. If that is the case use the WIFI calling feature offered by T-Mobile. If WIfI is not availiable you can try flashing the Blaze modem it improved my data speeds.

Well hopefully it is right around the corner and we can have the current crop of ICS roms rebased off the T-Mobile S2 stock build and not from our distant cousin AT&T SkyRocket's build. But to be honest I’m not sure if it will or will not but I’m assuming it will as the current set of radios needed to be tweaked to work on current ICS roms. Any who if you want Mr. X has a list of some radios that he has tried and reported working he listed radios for both GB & ICS which I will post a link to his thread below. Try them out and you might just find one that works for you.

I called tmobile about what was going on. They said they were going to try to reset my data connection and that I should reboot my phone and of its not fixed in a couple hours then to call them back.
I did this and all is well again! I'm back to a good signal and have not had any data issues in the past couple hours!
Thanks for all your help though it was greatly appreciated!

I read somewhere that this is a hardware issue and that I should get another replacement. Is there any merit to this or is there something else I can try? Thanks.

Yes they are the latest ones. 4g drops even on stock ICS? Also, if your area just got 4g, I hardly doubt it is your phone, but the towers that are dropping 4g. Try to give it a little bit (a few days to a couple weeks if you can) because of the "growing pains" of your local towers.

I'm on stock ICS 4.0.4 ...gonna try it out... I don't think it's my area because I drove into LA which has had 4g forever and same thing. About every minute or so the radio would seem to completely turn off so it's just the outline of the bars. Sometimes it will stay off for a long time and I also cannot make calls/text. Never had an issue like this.

I have had this phone for about 4 or 5 days. When at my house I get 3g and only about 1 or 2 bars. This happened on my Samsung stratosphere too. Could this be a SIM card issue or hardware. I have read about a lot of people replacing this phone and still getting issues with signal. If I do bring my phone in to a Verizon store to get a sim card do I have to revert my phone to stock? I don't know if I should send my phone back or if where I live is just horrible for data. Sorry for so many questions.

Flash another baseband radio and if you are using custom rom with custom kernel then flash stock galaxy nexus's kernel.

Since it is the case for two phones, then maybe the 3G coverage is not good in your place.
Try asking others living around to confirm if they also suffer the same 3G coverage problem. Also try in another place to see if it still shows a weak signal everywhere or only at your place.
I do get better signals in different areas. Even with the 3g and 1 bar my speeds for browsing are decent but I just was wondering if a sim card or replacement would help. Thanks and I will ask some people

Flashing radios makes a slight, if at all a difference. Your best bet would be to keep calling and complaining to your provider, ive seen some success stories where others have been able to get verizon/att to pay for a 3g extender
Edit:Alright thanks. I think I am just in a bad area and I use wifi at my house anyways. Thanks
I accidentally misread the radio labels. The 4.0.4 did install.

Good Luck
4.0.4 radios are old. Try running something a little newer. I'm using FC04/FC05. Although honestly I don't really see a difference. Most of the time it just adjusts the timings between switching in and out of 4G... which I have disabled.
I would also recommend looking at a cellular booster/repeater. I work underground in the bottom floor of an office complex and we don't get signal from any carrier. We paid like $200 for a repeater and now we're good.
Just picked up a used nexus and its Korean and I'm getting some radio drops but idk if its because I'm in a low signal area.. And I remember back in the day the Korean models has radio drops but good screens and the Chinese has good radios but purple tint screens.
Anyway I also read they made an update to eliminate this from happening anymore. Regardless of where it was made. Is this ROM related?
I am on 4.3 with the 4.2.2 radio..

I experience the same issues on 4.3 (I've tried multiple roms). If I go back to 4.2.2 all is well again. It has something to do with the 3g to 4g hand-offs and viceversa.
