[Q] ICS and lag after pressing Phone button - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday updated my Xperia Arc S to ICS, via PC Companion official update. Well I'm overally pleased but one thing is very annoying. If I want to make a call and press Phone button, it always takes 4-7 seconds to load up new screen with calling options. Is this suppose to work like that because there was almost no lag in android 2.3.4 after doing the same thing

Lots of complaints about this on the official forum. You could try a factory reset - this might speed it up a little - but it could still take 3 or 4 seconds.
My Arc S was a fresh install of ICS and it takes 2 or 3 seconds for the dialler to appear. Which is a joke!

It is a joke indeed, the main phone feature for dialing, and it's lagging like that. Gonna see if I can live with that, otherwise flashing back to 2.3.4

[Q] Should I return my phone?

Hi I bought my GNex in January and lately it's been having more and more issues.
Here's a list of what happens so far:
1) Low battery life - about 6-8 hrs with minimal use
2) Low 3G and 4G signal - usually 1 or 2 bars
3) Camera sometimes becomes unresponsive requiring a reboot to start up again
4) Sometimes the phone will be unresponsive in lock screen requiring to reboot by removing battery
5) A lot of apps become unresponsive or crash - happens daily with 10+ different apps
6) Sometimes my soft key buttons (back, home, windows) buttons will disappear and not come back (happened while using GoSMS)
Verizon told me that the new update will be coming out this month. Do you think it will resolve all of these issues? I'm hesitating with getting a refurbished phone. Has anyone had any issues with refurbished ones? Thank you to all who reply.
1) Low battery life - about 6-8 hrs with minimal use
This is pretty much the only downside I see with the Nexus. It's a great phone, but the battery life is terrible.
2) Low 3G and 4G signal - usually 1 or 2 bars
I'm running the 4.0.4 radios, which have a (cosmetic) fix for this. 3G data always seemed to work fine for me with only 1 bar, though.
3) Camera sometimes becomes unresponsive requiring a reboot to start up again
This happened to me a few times with the stock ROM. The current ROM I'm running (GummyNex, compiled from source) is based off of Android 4.0.3 and has never done this.
4) Sometimes the phone will be unresponsive in lock screen requiring to reboot by removing battery
See previous answer.
5) A lot of apps become unresponsive or crash - happens daily with 10+ different apps
Probably the apps' fault.
6) Sometimes my soft key buttons (back, home, windows) buttons will disappear and not come back (happened while using GoSMS)
This has happened, but it seems like if you just rotate 90 degrees one way and then back, you can usually get them to come back.
So...to answer your question, even Android 4.0.3 is a decent improvement over 4.0.2 in terms of stability. The forthcoming update is Android 4.0.4, IIRC. There's no point in getting a refurbished phone right now, since you'd still be running stock 4.0.2.
Everything you mentioned can be fixed with a custom rom, kernel, and baseband/radio flash.
If you don't want to do that than.... Yes return the phone.

question, nahingp
1)
You should look around for apps telling you what causes this battery drain. You might have installed apps preventing your phone from going to propper sleep
2)
I guess this depends on where you live and move. Is your network also this slow?
3)
Now this is a reason to give back the phone! It seems to me like it is a guarantee issue!
4)
See previous answer (I am not a friend of custom roms and flashing )
5)
Could you name one or two of them?
6)
Maybe after all you first should try to do a reset sounds a little bit like a software error...

[Q] New to gio

Hi,
First post, feels like I'm a little late to the party. I have a gio which initially had gingerbread 2.3.3. The phone is unlocked, and rooted, and has the clock work mod recovery patch on it. I have tried a couple of different versions of gingerbread, and am now running ice cream sandwich: kernel 2.6.35-7-galaxyics, CyanogenMod version build 9-20120610-UNOFFICIAL-gio, build number IMM76L.
Firmware-wise, it's mostly good, but I'm having a couple of weird issues:
1. The screen goes black on me periodically, and won't come back without pushing the on/off button. This is happening every 30 to 60 seconds of use.
2. The wifi crashes, a lot. With the older gingerbread I would get the word "error" under wifi in settings, and couldn't turn it back on. I would enter *#*#526#*#* to bring it back, but every 5 minutes seems a little excessive.
With the newer ICS, I've noticed I can play on a wifi link all day long without issue, but as soon as I set the phone down for a couple of minutes, wifi stops working. If I go into settings, wifi is on, but there's no connection. If I turn wifi off and back on, it comes back to life.
I guess, I'm wondering if these indicate more of a hardware issue than a software issue. It's hard to ask for support from my carrier, given I'm using an unlocked phone bought from a 3rd party, and have no contract.

I got that problem to sometime ,
And welcome !
send from my galaxy gio with paranoidAndroid Rom
Errors that you describe has a lot of people
The team is now working on ICS AOSP so be patient wait a little meringue as soon
And yet you propose to install something else that any CM
In total there is this quite a bit
update
A couple of things I've noticed:
1. The resetting wifi problem does not happen when the phone is plugged into USB.
2. The screen turning off happens frequently, but about 1/2 of the time, the screen will turn off for 1-2 seconds, then come back on at full brightness; the rest of the time, it will not come back on at all, but still responds to being tapped. The only way to get it back is to push the on/off button on the side twice, but then the screen is locked, and has to be swiped to unlock.
I have picked up a second phone, a 5660M running stock gingerbread 2.3.4, unlocked and rooted; not experiencing either of the two above issues (and the camera preview works). If I could take the 5660 back to stock at this point, I would prefer that, as the phone is not usable with these problems. Is there a stock rom available for this phone somewhere?
update part II
Hmm, after the phone showed up with 2.3.3 claiming to be a gt-s5660, and was sold as such, I finally put 1 & 1 together. I checked under the battery, it's a gt-s5660m. That explains probably all of the problems I've been having. Pity there's no ICS build for the M version of the phone.
You can use cm9 ics on your M model, it only changes your device id to gt-s5660, just dont flash roms with ODIN except roms for the M model.
Flashing from recovery wont install a baseband, with ODIN it mostly does, so the only roms you cant flash are old roms that still need odin like gioprio.
Flashable .zips are fine, all of them

The wifi problem might be hardware, m8
I don't know, as my gio has some strange problems as well and I've had ICS, Adrenaline ROMs, everything, and the problems still persist. At least they're not really bad to handle in everyday use but still, they're annoying.
Go to wifi settings - advanced - sleep policy- never

update part III
Since going back to GINGERBREAD.MUGKG3 / 2.3.4 for the GT-S5660M, the wifi crashing and screen blanking behaviours have completely stopped. After two days of running, wifi has not shut-off unexpectedly even once, and the screen does not blank any more at all.
The gps works now; it was not before. It used to sit for up to an hour under a clear open sky, day or night, and never acquire a single satellite. Now it picks them up within 30-60 seconds, though a full lock does take a couple of minutes.
The phone previously always indicated it was roaming, and would frequently refuse to send texts or make calls. I would get full bars for signal strength, but no connectivity.
I even got hold of the fm radio app, which was not included with the M version of the 5660, and manually installed it (phone must be rooted, and file system must be mounted read/write). It works too; a nice bonus.
The camera works, but is a bit flaky, requiring an occasional restart to get it going.
Probably the biggest headache, after flashing back to the 5660M version, was that the phone locked itself again, and wouldn't work on my network. I dumped bml5 page and searched out the unlock code. I had some trouble with this. The search string to get close to the code is supposed to be a sequence of twenty 0x00 bytes, one 0x05 byte, and fourteen 0xff bytes. The 0xff bytes weren't there, and it took a while for me to clue in that if I searched on the twenty 0x00, and single 0x05 byte sequence, I could still pull it out. I got it, and wrote it down in case this happens again.
sms issue
Still ticking along with the GT-S5660M; mostly it's all working nicely. I have one question though: I recently ran out of memory for storing SMS messages. It looks like the texting app in the phone wants to put everything on the SIM card rather than on the SD card, but there's no option for moving the default storage location for messages. Is there a simple way to do this? The phone is unlocked & rooted, but does not have the ext2 file system on it.
What's the IC? I checked under the battery to confirm mine is a Canada model, and it is.
But my IC is GT-S5660L

4.2.1 bugs on GNex

I hope there is no similar thread on this yet and I request to all to add bugs here
my device: GSM international yakju-rooted
bugs:
1. clear recent apps in landscape mode, then switch to portrait mode and the cleared recent apps are BACK!!....and vice versa!!
2. Did OTA update with Bluetooth on and cannot switch off Bluetooth now with devices paired. Bluetooth switches back on automatically as soon as I try to switch it off. Correct me if this is a change in 4.2.1 or if this is indeed a bug.
Other complaints
1. apps on lockscreen widgets starting up randomly
2. 3 sec lag to start daydream and camera app
3. butter gone
4. laggy
luckily no random reboots and broken Bluetooth as others have reported on my device yet. I am not happy Google.
1. doesn't happen with me
2. can't test that (no bluetooth accessories)
Others:
1. lockscreen needs improvement (like clock widget auto resizing itself to full screen when swiping through screens)
2. my camera app starts in less than 2 seconds
3. 4.2 is a little heavier than 4.1.2 but still buttery compared to other high end phones
4. not on my phone
Something which happens to me when creating events on calendar... If i manually type in the end time of the event and the minutes are 59 (e.g. setting the end time to 22:59) when i press okay the time goes back one hour (e.g. 22:59 becomes 21:59). Anyone else?
I have none of the issues any of you have specified.

I got the same Recent App bug, which I didn't notice before!
But overall it is running smoothly. Did you try factory reset or flashing stock image?

* I listen to podcasts via Bluetooth car audio during my drive to and from work. Ever since 4.2, I get frequent Bluetooth disconnects while I am listening to audio. This never happened before 4.2. Unfortunately, 4.2.1 did not fix it.
* When third party apps such as Locale or Tasker turn WiFi on, it will not connect to any access points in range. However if I turn WiFi on via the WiFi settings, it connects immediately.
* Car mode is broken in 4.2 and 4.2.1. A "car home" app used to be able to invoke a mode where the home button would return you to the car app instead of the desktop. Now, the home button drops you to the desktop and crashes the launcher (Android's desktop process).
* Overall, much more lag and delays. Looks like 4.2.x is optimized for the Nexus 4 and its 2GB of RAM. 4.1.2 seemed perfect -- too bad we only had it for less than a month.
Well, my screen shuts off at random.. I can still press stuff, but it's totally black!! I have to put the battery and restart
bugs
I cannot use my BT headset, it disconnects when screen is off.
Camera is very very laggy.
Wipe phone and flash complete stock image!
I have none of these bugs! Bluetooth works like a charm.
Stock browser omnibox issue. When I open bookmarks and links from 3rd party appss, it's all good.
But when I try to type a search or url, the adress bar freezes and stays frozen on the screen. Rotate the screen and it becomes a black empty wasted space.
Is it a bug in in 4.2/4.2.1 or is it my phone?

i find it takes a couple of swipes of the security pattern at times, screen doesnt always respond as quick if ive not used my phone for a few hours.
didnt happen on 4.1.2 , not a massive issue but i do notice it

Firstly, It sounds bit too much to do a complete wipe and re-flash or a factory reset for just a dot.dot update.
Also, I have been reading that for some wipe and re-flash did not fix the Bluetooth issue. Also, a just a factory reset after OTA hasn't worked for all.
Can we please have confirmation here that a the factory reset thingy works so that all of us having issues can give it a shot?
In case we should wipe and re-flash, can it be done in the following way?
1. full backup system (in my case using titanium backup)
2. factory reset
3. copy the relevant image , yakju 4.2 in my case, into memory and flash zip using cwm recovery (6.0.1.5 in my case). then flash 4.2.1 similarly.
4. restore root.
5. system data/apps restore
please let us know.
International Yakju here and I've get the most annoying out of the problems. Random soft restarts. I've done a soft reset and it didn't help. I'm getting really pissed at this. Thinking of rolling back to 4.1.x
I havent tested bluetooth but I have random errors, sometimes when phone is locked It vibrates, I unlock it and it is asking with wich program I want to open, I choose gmail and it attaches a bug report, a .txt file with 4mb and a screenshot tottaly black.
weird. 4.2.1 yakju

I agree with the 3rd and 4th points. Camera app is quite different from ISC 4.0 and Jelly Bean 4.1, both icons are rotating while the phone is rotated. However, Jelly Bean 4.2's icon, instead of rotating, they shift the position while the phone is put as horizontally. I hope these will be fixed in the near update.

I got the same bug on both my galaxy nexus and nexus 7. For those who said that they don't have this bug, did you leave at least one app on and rotate the screen while having the recent apps menu open? Try again.

Can I turn off updates
OTA update to 4.2, totally stuffed my setup, flashed 4.2.1, no difference, have now flashed stock 4.1.2. to make the phone work as it should do.
Problem 1: The signal strength meter vanished on my car screen, no indication that bluetooth had connected.
Problem 2: The speaker, as I am sure we are all aware, is rubbish. I am using the pucker car mount and have a small speaker system set up and hooked into this so that I can hear warnings from CamerAlert. The phone connects over bluetooth but the CamerAlert warnings are directed out of the device speaker and go via the car mount to the speaker system - works a treat. With 4.2 this totally disappears and I get half a warning from the device speaker itself.
Having gone to 4.2 and back I can vouch for the fact that it is the update that is wrong. It will take me another day to get the 'phone back as I want it and I will then do a full backup. Thanks a bunch Google for, really professional update.
All I want now is for the 'phone to stop nagging me to update, anyone know how to turn off updates ??
my phone freeze after taking a picture today, so weird it didn't happen before and i need to pull out the battery in order to restart the device because the power button not give a respond.. so sad.. in 4.1.x everything is good.. for the first time on my gnex i need to pull out the battery twice today.. huh!!
Wow. I was very pissed of with the overall lagginess of 4.2/4.2.1 update, but I thought I might wait and hopefully Google will fix that. But then I noticed just how ofter the stock launcher crashes (leaks from RAM anyways). 5-10 times in an hour after using heavy apps like Chrome, Pocket, Facebook etc I press home button and I get and empty wallpaper. WTF? How is this even possible for a stock app?. And then there are things I've mentioned in other similar 4.2-reated threads like camera animation that lags and music widget that stops responding and keeps playing after headphones are unplugged...Gosh, that's the worst update (for me at least) ever. And now I noticed that recent apps bug. It does exist. Awesome.

[Q] Would a reset remove lag on stock JB update?

Before anyone just says yes, please look at my situation.
I am running the latest stock JB update, but there seems to be a lot of lag. I installed the update using Sony's software as an upgrade and kept all my information and apps instead of doing a clean install. Is the following behavior normal or is this something a hard reset would fix?
1. If I manually close the phone app, and then launch it, I have to wait at least 3 seconds for the phone app to populate (i.e. show keypad, and call history)
2. If I manually close the Google Now app, then launch Google Now from the homescreen seacrch widget, I have to wait at least 2 seconds for the Now app to fully load and for the soft keyboard to launch.
Are these wait times normal for the Xperia S/SL? I am considering a hard reset of my phone, but would rather not waste my time if this lag is typical.
Sooner or later it'll become laggy, so it is a temporary fix at least for phonebook

Wait times are pretty normal.. But a clean install of any ROM will prevent lags or bugs.. Do remember that..

Z1 Compact hangs in random moments

Hi
My Z1 Compact started to hang while opening apps or while using them. Sometimes it doesn't reset and then some things are not responding and whole interface disappear and comes up again.
I tried to record it with the screen recorder and the "show touches" option but the record wasn't saved. The "show touches" option worked during the hang.
Sometimes I can turn it off by clicking power button and power off but it takes some time to "read" my touch. There are no problems with the battery.
Is it a RAM problem? How can I find out what happens before and during the hang? Is there something like Windows event viewer for Android? My ROM was DstrikerZ1 Kai SP007, after the problems started I updated it to SP008, now it is on stock ROM with no root. The bootloader is locked and it was never unlocked.
I thought it would work for another 2 years

Are you saying that the problem was the same through both Dstriker versions, and straight stock? Was there full wipes in between? If so, I would think it's a hw issue, maybe digitizer... If not, best thing to test is a totally different rom with full wipe.
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think digitizer can cause software freezes... If it was faulty I couldn't control the phone but it would respond anyway.
I flashed SP008 with data+system+cache+art cache wipe, then I flashed stock ROM via software repair in PC Companion.

A good app for what you're looking for might be OSMonitor from f-droid - https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=git&fdid=com.eolwral.osmonitor&fdpage=3 There's a 'message' tab, and a drop-down menu you can choose which type of log you want to read.
I don't understand this log ;/ There is a lot of messages.
I consider buying a Z1C with cracked screen and swapping the mobo, but first, I will call a technician.
Hello I have the same issues from today. It looks like a SW issue. I never do updates, except yesterday I did,...
I also saw that lots of people have issues with the latest update of Facebook.
Yes, it was all because of Facebook. I restored custom rom and all mods yesterday and it works fine so far.
Somebody wants us to throw old Z1Cs, but we throw FB app instead. Nice try mr. Zuckerberg.
I don't know why, but i have this problem, i don't think it's hw fault, i have the same issue in all my 3 z1, it's kinda funny, deleting Facebook App 'fixed' my problem
Had same freeze on SP007, so I downgraded to SP005, instead of upgrade to SP008.
SP005 runs much better and doesn't look like Pixel but has the XZ look
Had this issue all week and now I know it's Facebook! Was having hard / soft reset issues for like a week after this stupid Facebook update... thank god I checked here.
