Back story: Every time I turn on / reboot the phone, the media process would crash. It didn't look like it affected anything but annoying non the less. In an attempt to fix it (which I did, so far) I cleared the data from "Media Storage." This deleted all my pictures, which is fine - they're all automatically backed up with Dropbox.
Now, all of the factory sounds are gone.
Is there a way to restore them or copy they back into the correct folder on the phone? I'd like to avoid wiping the phone, if possible. If I have to do a factory reset, it's not the end of the world, but just a PITA.
Thanks in advance!

Hey,
I want to mess around and most likely break things but i want to know i can recover from it ^_^
Soft reset = restart device yes?
Hard reset = ?? dose it have a backup rom in there or something what exactly dose this do
Can i backup and later restore the entire rom? as far as i can see i need to pay for something like this which seems to me like a very very basic feature...
Looking foward to putting my mind at rest so i can start breaking things =D
Cheers
Hello! Hard reset means that you reset your device to the manufacturer's default. Well, that means: after a hard reset:
- When you turn your device ON, it acts exactly as the first time you did it
- You won't loose the ROM
- You will loose everything you did after the first use. That means, for example: contacts, installed applications, pictures, sms, emails, installed applications, phone configuration, ect...
- What won't be deleted: contacts on SIM card, everything on Memory Card. I recommand you to save on your mem card: contacts, pictures, CAB files (so it's easy to re-install apps after hard reset), media files (music and video, but usually you won't put them on the device memory, so no problem there)
- Well, basically, after a hard reset, it's like you turn on your phone for the first time (except that your memory card won't be formated)
You can backup your contacts-email-contactspictures-sms using PIM backup. Just save the backup file in the memory card or on your PC. Then restore it after hard reseting your device. More informations here: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-pim-backup-v2-8.html
I hope that helps you!
Thx for the reply ^_^
So if i go into file explorer and delete everything, a hard reset will fix that?
Just want to know if its just resetting settings and del personal data/programs, or if its reloading all the files into the rom from.. somewhere else.
Trying to get an idea of what i cant recover from, or if i download something suspect, can it do any lasting damage

Well... no and yes.
No, you won't be able to delete everyting using File Explorer , and Yes a hard reset will clean up all your mess and "reinstall" Windows Mobile from scratch afterwards. It's more or less like formatting your PC's hard drive and then use the recovery partition or CD/DVD to rebuild everything up to the original state.
I would advise you to remove your memory card before hard reseting... just in case. Better safe than sorry.
MMMk i think i get how it works then ^_^
There is 1 rom and it just restricts access to origonal files and restores a copy of origonal settings? So its unlikely my curiosity will get the better of me by editing or deleting things, time for some fun =D
Thx for the replys!
"Sprite Backup" will not restore ROM (nor will any other backup software) - but Sprite will backup/restore *every* other setting, let you browse backup files, and makes self-restoring backups.
Hi,
I was just trying out a few ROMs, and after flashing CyanogenMod (The stable release, can't remember the exact name) and then doing a full wipe and restoring my LeeDroid Nandroid backup, I ran into a bit of a kerfuffle...
After booting up, I was greeted with blank homescreens - which was a bit annoying, but nothing too bad - and so went to get started on repopulating them.. only to find hardly any apps were present. I put this down to some of them not having synced yet, until I noticed that even system apps were missing; Market, Music etc - not a single downloaded/sideloaded app is present. They appear under the "Manage Applications" section of the Settings menu but only Data and Cache are present, not the Application themselves.
I reflashed the Nandroid backup again (and again), and was met with the same, only Astro File Manager had miraculously appeared so I could at least install some apps from my SD Card using that. So after installing the Market and Root Explorer from there, I could see that the System Apps were infact there, but required manual installation. I can't even re-download all of the lost Apps, as even attempting to select one in the Market leads to a force close.
I can effectively do nothing, except use the tiny array of Apps that are actually there, which at least does include Messaging and Phone. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this, or a partial-solution at least?
Thanks
Ok, just as I finished typing this the Factory Reset finished and everything loaded. It seems everything is working now, but still, I'm just left with System Apps and with no sign of my other apps syncing/downloading.
After the wipe factory reset did you do nandroid install again straight after?
Sent from my leedroid v1.3a DhD via xda app
Yeah, and the same happened again. I tried various nandroids from all sorts of ROMs, and I would just get the same, even restoring the Stock ROM.
That said, the thread may as well be closed, I just went and did everything manually and everything's fine now. It took many hours, but it's in a usable state now.
i expect u will face the same problem soon as long as ur apps list will grow and be installed on ur device, this is a big issue i faced and still experimenting to get the best solution for, but currently the most effective cure is to mount ur sd card to a card reader, and go to the folder android_secure, cut some bunch of files ther(maybe half of them) and past to ur desktop, mount back the sd to ur device, ur phone will bahave normally now, this will work great after ur nandroid backup, when u see it work, try again the previous step and start to add files to android_secure folder from ur desktop, untill the bad behaviors start to occur.
hope this will help
I read alot about wiping data in CWM3 and was wondering what that wipes and is it good to do periodically since it seems to be part of repair procedures. What gets wiped. Also what is the difference in backing up in CWM3 and My Backup Pro.
Thanks for helping us noob's learn.
When you wipe data/factory reset. You're clearing ALL the setup that had been done on the phone. So the next boot; it will act like it did when it was first taken out of the box.
Starting the tutorial and prompting to login or create a google account.
recovery backup is like an image of your phone; it is always best to use this when trying a theme or anything that could cause your phone to not boot. You can always go back into recovery and put your phone back into the state it was prior to the change (kind of like a restore point in windows)
the backup programs really just do apps their data and some system data but could not help you if a theme or kernel causes your phone to stop booting to android. This is more like copying files to a folder in windows and then copying them back when needed.
Either backups are good to have as they serve different purposes. ALWAYS backup your phone. It can save you much headaches later.
Hope that helped.
Luckily this isn't my main phone as it's close to junk now, but I wanted to test out 4.2 since my current device doesn't have a ROM yet. That being said, I'm in a real sticky situation that I don't think is possible to get out of.
So here's the problem
-micro USB port is fried, only charges when 0% battery and off. Can't mount storage at all.
-when it boots start up apps force close and it's impossible to get to the homescreen because of infinite popups. Factory reset does not fix this. Why this is is a mystery since it's the gapps that are force closing.
-sdcard is now mysteriously empty. I'm almost positive that I didn't wipe it on accident.
I need to get a new ROM onto it since a full wipe doesn't fix the problem. I can't mount the sdcard/adb push/fastboot due to fried port, I can't download through wifi/bluetooth due to infinite force closes.
Is there any possible solution that I'm not thinking of that can save my beloved gnex?
EDIT: Never mind I fixed it. I ended up wiping data, system, cache, and dalvik individually instead of trusting the factory reset option to do it for me. This of course caused the ROM to be removed completely so there wasn't anything to boot into. I was messing around in the recovery since that's all I could do and I figured out that for some reason whenever I did a factory reset it created another /0 directory on my sdcard. I had something like /sdcard/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/ before I could get to my real /sdcard. I flashed a ROM I had saved and am now up and running again. If I didn't have that ROM saved, I would have been screwed for sure.
Hi, yesterday phone admin made factory reset by remote control and now phone is empty. There was a lot of photos and info in it. Is there any chances to recover data or at least some photos? And how to do it?
Android 10
Last time I was doing something similar - Samsung S4

If you have created a backup before, you can restore from there.
I assume that you do not have s backup.
On some devices, there is a kind of trash/paper bin, in which you can find deleted files.
If not on your device, you can connect your device to a PC (via USB cable), and check with a recovery tool if it can detect deleted files to be restored on the internal storage of your phone.
You should really create a backup of all your files regularly, when you're phone admin is performing a remote factory reset from time to time. Or insert an external sd card/USB storage to copy your files in a place that is not affected by a factory reset.
Usually on a PC hard drive you can run a data recovery software to try and get things back. I believe with phones its a bit different. Once you factory reset it sets every bit on the phones memory to a 1, so its impossible to get everything back.
I could be talking out my arse however.
