Thanks, ArcMan09. I have only rooted the Arc and have not installed any other firmware - it still has the existing manufacturer's firmware. I have also not unlocked the bootloader. Will it not accept an "official" update again ?

The updates do some checks on your current system, if it seems modified it will not update. Just do a restore in pcc it will install the latest version on your phone for you.

Just flash 4.1.A.0.562 ftf files with FlashTool.
FlashTool do not require unlocked bootloader.
After that you can root easily.

I have a rooted Arc S with .62 firmware. The right way to update is to reflash the firmware and then update to ICS via PCC?

I just updated my Arc to ICS. Connected through the Sony Companion which detected the SW update and it downloaded and updated it. The downside of this is that my existing root has been 'patched', ie, it has been unrooted with the update. Waiting for Doomlord to work his magic now

Yes - but what we really need is a 1-click rather than flash 'down', root and then flash. Am too lazy for these you know...basically a zergrush exploit or an emulator trick for the latest firmare...

There is no easy root method at the moment. If you want root then you will need to downgrade the kernel then root then update kernel.
Sent from my LT15i using xda premium

The only easy way is an unlocked bootloader, other you'll either have to use the downgrade or wait for an exploit.

Ok, so I have now rooted following instructions from this thread :
http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119
Step 1. Download Flashtool
Step 2. Download the .562 kernel
Step 3. Flash .562 kernel and reboot phone
Step 4. Root using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601038
Step 5. Download the .431 kernel
Step 6. Flash .431 kernel and reboot phone

I don't see why you need to go check on the talk.sonymobile.com site as those very same instructions have been posted here.
You do realise that everything that happens there is just a rehash of what happens here at XDA. :cyclops:

True...just that I had several links bookmarked on this rooting thing and I followed one of them. Btw, the .562 & .431 kernel links were about 5 MB each, whereas the ones I found on XDA were ~250MB - guess they included the entire stuff...or, I wasn't searching properly here:crying:

The 250mb ones will be ftfs, so the whole rom not just the kernel

Righto...just wondering why you need to download the whole ftf's when kernel flash would do...

Probably because they couldn't find the kernel alone. In that case, the only option would be to download the entire ftf.

[Q] How can I get root?

I just unlocked my bootloader and flashed one of the generic roms but they are already at 2.3.3. How do I get back to 2.3.2 to use gingerbreak and then OTA update. Or is there another way? Thanks!
No only solution for now is flash downgrading and using OTA update to ahve Root on 2.3.3. So reflash with a 2.3.2 version, Root, use OTA update to get tback to 2.3.3
PS sorry didn't see you where unlocked, this solution is for locked phones
Or do this:

Now I just need to find a way of doing a nandroid backup a la my old desire so I can save this state.

Easiest way is to:
*Download*
3.0.A.2.181 Generic World: http://www.mediafire.com/?y9s73andrl4bllc
*Use Flashtool to Flash back to .181*
Flashtool: http://www.multiupload.com/7H4JT35B6G
*Use Gingerbreak after you flashed back*
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
*After it have rebooted and active, go to settings and do a OTA over wireless.

[Q] How do I get root back after update to .62 firmware?

I just updated my arc via PC companion software to .62 firmware.
I rooted it earlier by super one click method by DooMLorD from here.
Now after the update I don't have root access and I can't get it back by the same way or by GingerBreak and I can still see superuser icon.
The system apps are reaaally using too much memory.

using flash tool and a .42 FTF downgrade from .62 to .42 un check wipe cash and wipe user data and you save everything.
root using flashtool
do an OTA update to .62 and you remain root.
then and only then can you delete system apps you dont want. if you change the system aps befor the OTA update it will fail to update.

What needs to be done in the following ORDER
1 - Get yourself a firmware (whichever one you want) .42
1.1 - Connect your phone to your computer
2 - Using the application called Flashtool which be can be found on the forum (multiple threads) Flash the the rom. You will loose all your contacts, sms etc...
2.2 - Wait for the tool to tell you that it's done flashing
2.3 - Using ZergRush or Flashtool ROOT your phone.
3 - Start your phone and disconnect it from the PC
4 - Press the menu button and go to SETTINGS - ABOUT PHONE - SOFTWARE UPDATE
5 - This will verify and push the OTA for .62 to your phone.
That's pretty much it in the simplest way possible.

it`s not so easy
I did it exactly step by step,
phone shows information about upgrade but what i need is PC Companion to do that. This information is in notification about new firmware.
ok I did it but first I had flashed LT15i_4.0.2.A.0.58_Generic Global HK because only after that I could upgrade withouth PC Companion.
thx for advice.
Yeah that was point 1. Which was to get yourself a firmware version .42... then yeah you can update via OTA...
I can't update .42 OTA it is possible only when i flash .58 first...

Would I still be able to update OTA (from France) with .42 World or shall I use a .42 France ?

That's what I have done, and worked well.
Question: How can I update via OTA? Is there a site like wotanserver or something? Or is OTA an app I can download somewhere?
I updated my WT19 with PC Companion, it has .62 firmware now, but I need root to delete system apps and clear space on internal memory.
Anyway I always update via wotanserver, because I can't find the .ftf I need to flash it via flashtool. And now I'm having problems with wotanserver, so where can I find those firmware files (ftf) ?? (for my model)

When installing 4.0.2.A.0.62 it says can not install

I have the phone rooted and when I try updating to 4.0.2.A.0.62 it just says can't install. Do I have to flash it all over again, which would mean loosing all apps?
Via OTA?
Better leave it as it is.
Update via computer will remove root.
Data remains with both methods.
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
happened to me too! You have to flash .42 again, root before u do anything else and right after root update via OTA! ;-)
And if you don't wanna do it again next time, backup your applications right after OTA update, so you can restore it for the next OTA update (if any)
Is it not possible to unroot, and then update to 4.0.2.A.0.62 ?

Rooting the phone doesn't prevent the OTA update, messing with system apps does. (And you usually mess with system apps when rooted)

Ahh of course.. Iv'e deleted a few system apps and messed with other things (crapware)
When you put them back, you can update your firmware. When you do it OTA, you will keep your root.
Furtermore, this update won't remove any data or apps.

What should I use for backup?
Titanium backup will do, and by the way, if you find your current firmware you can try and restore one by one the bloatware you deleted or restoring any mod you have installed, I did this and I was able to update via OTA again.

You may consider either retrying (some people reported having to flash twice or thrice before it would work) or using another firmware, or using a different flash software (I did updated OTA after flashing .42 with wotanclient).
I experience this. What I did I reflash with rootable firmware then root with flashtool without removing any app then I directly update OTA. Then I successfully install.

I have similar problem and now I have a rooted .62 NAM firmware.
What I did is the following:
Flash your phone to .42 firmware with flashtools
Update your phone to .62 with PC companion
Re-flash your phone back to .42 with flashtools
Root your phone with flashtools
Update your phone to .62 with OTA
No need for step 2, 3 and 4!

Just have a rooted .42 firmware with an locked bootloader ( i seriously doubt that you have a locked boot loader )
Aftet that just update to .62 over the air [OTA]
If this doesn't works then either flash a pre rooted .62 firmware via fastboot or flash a fresh unrooted firmware via flashtool and then root it by recovery method! If you still have a problem then PM me!

Root for 4.0.4 Xperia Arc/ Arc S was out a while ago. One must downgrade the kernel, root and then upgrade it.
try to put your drive into flashmode and flash back to a stock rom/kernel and try install the big pack on an GB rom!
First of all, go to this forum and download the LT15i 4.0.4 update for your phone. I suggest Generic Global World.
Flash it using the latest version of Flashtool (v0.8.6.0). Check the No Final Verification box. Welcome to the correct build of ICS for your phone. LOL!
Now you've already downloaded the LT18's 4.0.3 ftf previously. Using Flashtool, just flash the kernel alone of the 4.0.3 build. Make sure you exclude everything else. The 4.0.3 kernel is rootable using the zergrush exploit.
Once that's done, flash back the 4.0.4 kernel. Again making sure to exclude everything else other than the kernel.
And there you go, you have a rooted 4.0.4. After this, go download pvyParts' Xperia CWM Auto-Installer from the market.
That should solve your problem. You should have no issues with CWM after that. (Maybe except a slight offline charging issue. )

Flashtool method is available in this forum, just search for it . There will be detailed method with pictures. Search for stock 6.1.a.2.50 ftf, which is also available in this forum.
In ur case, uncheck wipe user data and wipe app log before flashing. U won't lose any data but you'll lose root and cwm. So u must root again using bin4ry method and reinstall cwm after u flash.
Please note that 6.1.a.2.55 doesn't support bin4ry method. So u have to update to 6.1.a.2.50.
Good luck!
