I ran speed test after flashing the FD24 modem and they were horrible. I just flashed the FD24 kernel to match and there is a huge difference for the better, almost tripled the download speed and doubled on upload. I am on AOKP for the time being.

Back to fd19

I had flashed the fd24 modem and it broke my mms so i went back to fd19. However, once the aosp fd24 kernal was out, i flashed both.... and BAM!! MMS is working again and so far speeds seem much faster. Wireless tether doesn't lag and i'm happy so far.
Just my experience

Initially it was really bad. I couldnt update the profile or PRL but after a reboot everything got quite better. I have ALWAYS gotten 1.4 something upload on 4G and that's definitely changed a bit. Latency is kinda cruddy.

if you're looking for the AOSP kernel just go get it from TCP's page on AndroidFileHost. That seems to be a good place to check periodically for new aosp kernels and roms.
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/Samsung_Epic_4G/TCP/

Seems pretty solid to me.
Pulling about 1Mb down and about 0.6Mb up.
This is with fd24 kernel and modem on CM9

MOST people dont even test during the same time of the day. OFCOURSE speeds will be better/worse. I usually run a few test, flash new modem, then test & judge speeds.

Well, I said that to say you cant run speedtest at like 2 am (where your speeds are likely to be HIGHER), and then flash a new modem at 3pm, test it, get low speeds (peak hours) and say the modem sucks, and speeds arent comparable to a previous modem. You need to test them at nearly the same time.

So what's the verdict?

Test the modem at various hours over the course of a full week, including weekends. If you get high and low speed tests, then the problem is likely at Sprint and has nothing to do with your modem.

OK, so my results have been mixed, I haven't tried the FD24 modem with the FD24 kernel yet only tried the FD24 modem along side the FD19 kernel, but I've had much faster speeds with the FD19 kernel/FD19 modem and the FD24 kernel/FD19 modem. Same speeds no matter the kernel.
Does thebkernel really affect modem speeds?

well its the same as verizon but niether cdma networks can come close to touching current gsm carriers as far as 3g speeds
i had to get an at&t phone for work so now im packing 2 sgs2's i mix them up so much and no i didnt get the craptacular skyrocket i got the i777 which is the i9100 branded for at&t
Yeah those numbers seem pretty much what I get. Every once in awhile ill be lucky and see 2MB on 3g but its rare.
I'm three blocks from Times Square on New Years Eve. I would have thought with all the crowds today speed would be way down, but:
3G: Ping 84ms Download 2120kbps Upload 850kbps
4G was a little slow however:
4g: Ping 114ms Download 8836kbps Upload 1513kbps
wow... I'm blown away by everybody here.
I'm in central long island (melville for the locals) and around here I average about 100kbps... never ever see above 150
at home, I use wifi and roam control because I've got nothing going on over there. so all of you should feel lucky
clarification: this is real life use. speedtest app says I avg 800kbps but I've never seen that happen
After flashing EL26 modem, my 3g increased to 1360kbps down/ 720 up. Before I was averaging 800 down/ 300up. So far this modem has given me the highest speeds out of all the modems. Even 4g speeds are higher and more consistent. Ping times are slower than previous modems, but speeds are faster. Go figure. I'm in D/FW area here.

FD02 Modem review

I live in nj, and i love the FD02 Modem. the 3g is always near 1 mb per sec, and upload about 600 kb. thats awesome. GPS locks real easy, and I get phone signals where I did not before. (aka work) It used to be more spoty, but now, it gets more consistent signal. only down side is that my 4g is slower than my 3g. i used to get 5 mbps, but now i get like 800 kbps. it's interesting.. slowest 4g speed i ever got at my home. but i never use 4g so i don't care. i might keep this modem for good. but i'm also going to try FD05.
how is your experience with FD02?
edit: just tried FD05, and the 3g went down to 100 kbps.. and 4g went up to 2 mbps.. but thats not that great. i'm gonna try to keep it for a day and see how it works.

That's actually pretty bad for 4G. That download speed is what would be expected of a 'good' 3G connection, in the areas where Sprint has upgraded backhaul.

EDIT: thanks, sfhub. I understand those concepts well enough, I enter just actually never bothered to check what "good" 4G speed should actually be.
Maybe I should look into that, lol.
Sent from my calculator watch.
Things are relative. A modem is not going to make a bad area all of a sudden better. The problem with most Sprint areas which have speed issues is the backhaul is overloaded. So as an analogy, a new wifi driver is not going to suddenly make your DSL WAN connection turn into a FIOS connection. If it doesn't make your connection worse or things are slightly better, than that should be a sign of good things for most people. You want the radio to allow you the full potential that is available *in your area*. The radio isn't going fix endemic problems in your area, you just want it to not make things worse.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
What I do is reboot to recovery, clear cache and dalvik, flash modem, reboot, update profile then prl then reboot. Sometimes you need to try again on profile/prl. If it doesn't take by the third time then something isn't right. I don't know how to fix that either.
I have been getting pretty good speeds on FD26, however, I started getting frequent LOS today. Was at a music festival earlier, and thought it may be an issue with overloaded towers, but it just LOS'd again at home. I haven't had an LOS issue since pre EL29. Flashed to FB24 a few days ago, then FB26 (nodata) yesterday. Considering doing a full wipe and reflash to see if it cures the issue.

Oops, my bad. I'm used to seeing speeds in bit-terms.
I like it. Smooth overall, i have no major complaints. I have noticed areas where i normally have minimal service, i now have none, and my 3g speeds are terrible. However sprint is also doing some major overhauling, so im going to blame sprint. Ive compared my phone to my wifes stock el29, and i think each user will have a different feel towards things. I love the lockscreens and smoother transitions fd26 has, but i think in my area staying stock is in my best benefit as far as service goes....Looks like if i want my service back i might have to go back to el29. SFHUB, do you think its possible that maybe all the sprint network changes could be the reason for my bad 3g data speeds and poor connections? My wifes phone see's 3g and shows it, maybe 1 or 2 bars, and i show none....however she cant browse online or do anything...just make a phone call....i can do that to....what do u think? I formatted all and did a fresh flash from el29 to fd26 btw....(also im in niles,IL and chicago,IL)
If your wife's e4gt gets signal, then it is probably the modem/kernel in FD26 causing you issues. Also check to see if they are on the same PRL and try update profile.
If that doesn't help, try ##72786# reset from the dialer, you'll need your MSL which you can get using "getprop ril.MSL" in adb shell.

Sprint Epic 4G user, beware of ICS UPDATE, SLOW 4G CONNECTION

I can't believe no one is bringing this up. When I decided to drink the kool-aid and updated my phone to ICS, I noticed a huge drop in my speedtest result. In 4G, I used to get speed 2-4x faster than 3G. Ever since I upgraded to ICS, my 4G speed is unstable and it is now speedtesting at less than my 3G speed. Does anyone know what is going on? I have tried 4 different ICS rom and modem, they all do the same thing. I am currently on the official sprint patch, same exact problem again. When I flash back to Gingerbread, my speed skyrockets back up to where it should be. Anyone know what is going on? I can't believe no one is bringing this up.
Same problem here, I don't get it. Is everyone else not having the problem or just cool with it?

The OP meant to say our Epic 4G Touch, and he is correct. It varies by region and it doesn't seem to affect everyone, but for those who are affected, the difference is noticeable (in my case, about 8-10mbs on gb versus 2-3mbs on ics). Course, this issue has existed since the first ICS roms were leaked as well as all of the AOSP based ics roms. Based on previous threads, there are people getting 8-10mbs on ICS roms so I'm pretty sure it isn't affecting everyone...just some.

It is the Sprint Epic 4G touch Galaxy whatever crap name they give it. Anyway it is definitely related to ICS because I flashed multiptimes back to Gingerbread and I was getting speeds that were 8x faster. Now i am stuck at like 1200kbps at best with ICS. I would have stayed on Gingerbread if I can get the tether to work. My rooted EL29 cant seem to bypass the Sprint block anymore.
Turn 4g off, update profile and prl, turn 4g back on. Sometimes reboot
Sprint has been working on towers in area 13 miles south of los Angeles. Just tested and great speed now! Thanks Sprint. On blue Kuban custom ICE ROM. Top two are 4G, ...3G. ... and bottom WiFi with time Warner sucks

Knoxville TN here as well. Near the Halls Crossroads area if you know where that's at. No 4G and 3G sucks so bad I have to use a corporate PRL and Roam Control to have data in half the places I go. Sucks cause I can't run AOKP all the time I would like too due to the data issues. Nothing you can really do other then use QPST and use a corporate PRL. It helps dramatically.

My speed tests have been strange on FF18, they start off slow and then they get up to 9mbps shortly after it starts. Back on EL29 Blazer 4.1 I would get very sporadic and uneven wimax speeds, but they sometimes went up to 15mbps. When I blazer I did try several modems (including FF18) and I did not notice much of a difference. I am in NYC and in NJ.
Mine actually went up, I never had this speed before 0.o

I posted about this yesterday.
With FF18 I get .5mbps down and 1.5mbps up on 4g which is slower than 3g. In the exact same location I flashed el29 and got 12+mbps down and 2+up.
I then flashed the EL29 modem and used ff18 but still received very slow 4g speeds. I have to assume that this is a kernal issue, not the modem. I've tried updating PRL and profile, even putting different PRL's on (sprint corporate 11119) and had no increase in speeds.
Either way, forget ICS. Its great but its not worth the crappy data speeds so I'm back to EL29.

Modems have different effects for everyone. Hundreds of users had tested FF18 prior to the OTA, plenty of talk happened before the OTA.
Flash a different modem if your performance is that bad see if it clears up for you. I get great 4G speeds. Only a couple of modems were troublesome for me and it was usually GPS not network speeds though had a couple that 3G was screwed on.
This thread is ridiculous, my speeds are the same on ics. The variations in speed are due to crappy sprint (and clear) service not android version.

I get between 8 and 15 Mbps and ALWAYS get 1.4 Mbps Up. I currently run the FF18 modem and I have had the same experience on most of the modems. Like your current experience upload seems to not get much of a wrench thrown in it.

I've been using Sprint for years, their 4G service for over a year now and I've never seen speeds anywhere near what I've seen past few days... it's crazy. I'm hitting 13mb at night, 11mb during the day... I'm VERY pleased right now, it's like years of struggle and their rewarding me.
Rom is straight up Cyanogen 9.
For me, ping times double on ICS.

From playing around past several days, it's all around the pacific northwest, Oregon, Washington, etc.
My guess is they're upgrading towers for LTE. 3G speeds are still the same though, that is to say, beyond belief terrible. But 4G has gone nuts. I might try to find a Sprint store in the area and check to see if LTE is live yet.

So you say your wimax 4g speeds have gone up as a result of the network vision work? I thought that was for lte and 3g improvements only? Can anyone else comment on that?

Beats me as to whats going on... all I know is I've never seen a speedtest result beyond 7mb or so on a GOOD day, now even during busy hours I'm hitting 11, 12, 13... maybe so many Sprint subscribers have cancelled their service due to poor network speeds there's simply now an abundance of bandwidth. lol

Notice the same here in Orlando, 4g speeds have never been higher. Could it be people switching to LTE devices and getting off of wimax?
Edit: unnamed rom, ff18 modem
Swyped from my Samsung Epic™ 4G Touch.
Caulk ROM 3.0, modem ek02 also in the Miami area only Wimax I don't use 3g lol
