I want to know if installing the official ICS will break our ability to root the A100 and install other ROMS.
If so, is it better to wait for someone to modify the official ROM so we don't lose root or make a new ROM based off of the new ICS.
Just want to make sure before I accepts and install the new update.

.....*sigh*...
Yes you can root using the ZeroNull method (use the search to find it)
It can also have the bootloader unlocked (use the search to find it)
You can also install a custom recovery like CWM or TeamWin (use the search to find it)
Guess what?...You can even put a custom rom on it now too (after you've done all the other things that you'll be searching for in this forum)
You can

Apologies for the very simple question, but I've yet to find a definitive yes/no answer on this.
I'm interested in:
- unlocking the bootloader
- rooting my nexus
With a view to install root-enabled apps like Titanium etc.
I DO NOT want to install any custom ROM (at least for the time being!) as I am happy with stock ICS 4.0.4
If I do the above (unlock & root) - will I still be notified about and be able to install OTA updates from Google?
(I'm on yakju)
Cheers

you will be notified and assuming you still have the stock recovery and not CWM and do not modify any system files, you can install it.
is method given by Jubakuba the only way to root Galaxy Nexus??

<lie>
Yes.

Really though...it's the best way.
If you want to use other methods *cough* toolkits *cough* they'll probably work.
But if you end up soft bricking your phone at some point (Trust me. You will.) You'll want the tools in place (and know that they're working and how to use them) to get you unstuck.

Thanks.
So, I assume form your answer that unlocking and rooting does not modify the system files enough to break ota?

unlock: no
root: no
the problem is, most root methods flash clockwork recovery. this does break OTA.

Hi.
I'll read through your guide - looks good.
However, you seem to imply that to get root, I have to install a custom recovery??
Is there a separate step to simply install root using the default recovery?
Easiest method...
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakju
You can (and should) download the factory images.
From there...unzip the .tar and the .zip inside of it.
The .zip contains a recovery.img
Flash that using my guide...post 3, I believe...detailing alternative (in this case, stock) recoveries after rooting.

To expand on what Zepius said:
1) unlocking does not modify any system files at all.
2) "rooting" just means place two files on your system partition. Nothing more. As long as you don't modify or delete files already there, you can add whatever files you want.

You do not need to install a custom recovery to root. Booting a custom recovery allows you to do the same thing. In Jubakuba's guide, replace
fastboot flash recovery <name-of-recovery.img>
with
fastboot boot <name-of-recovery.img>
and it will temporarily boot the custom recovery from your PC.
i am on my way to root it now guys, need help with few questions to remove my confusion. this forum has benn the most helpful for me, i hope i get further answers as well:laugh:
1. what if i root it and dont do anything else , what are its benefits, and will i still get ota
2. if i install a custom ROM , WILL i get ota. and where will be my stock rom and how i can get it back.
3. ehy do ineed to install a custom recovery while rooting.. will it effect my ota and how can i go back to my original recovery. i hope somebody sheds light on all these, as my phone is unlocked and i am waiting for answers to further proceed, thanx
i used jubakuba method to install sdk and pdanet to install driver, it didnot work, it didnot work so i went to samsung website to get latest driver,
what does flashing , reflashing recovery means
1. You'll be able to modify system files and have SuperUser permissions.
2. Assuming you only root and install a custom recovery you will be able to OTA. Your stock ROM gone, you can flash a factory image if you need it back.
3. You need a custom recovery so you can flash custom ROMs.
To be honest I don't think you have any business rooting your phone. You obviously have no need to and lack the drive to research on your own. OTA's also appear important to you so that's another reason to just stick to stock.

thank you so mcuh for all these answers, actually i am searching the net quite thoroughly, but some of these basics i needed to learn.
So I really love my phone the way it is. But I do want root because there's a couple things that I like to do and rooting is required. However, if I root and if there's an update for my phone. Do I have to go back to STOCK get the new updated version and then root? Or can I be rooted and when a new stock update comes out can I still update it and maintain my root? I know when root you cant do over the air can I just download the file and flash via odin?
5 android phones in the past, and you STILL have to ask this question??????
Sounds like you are the type of person who should NOT root...

I think the developer Chainfire has an app that will let you root and still get OTA updates. Poke around for his thread in the developers section to find it. I'll try to link it here in a few. Also I'm pretty sure you can go back to stock anytime you want, again Poke around in the developers thread for the download that can be flashed via odin.
However if you root, and install a custom recovery you will always be able to get the latest updates much earlier by flashing the roms that the developers will inevitable update much quicker than waiting for carrier updates. check the site galaxynote2root.com for a super easy one step process to both root and install Clockworkmod all in one to them be able to flash the Roms.
First of all,
What is Unbricking ?
Second Question:
If I flash my SU640 to GingerBread 2.3.5 , Root it using whatever method. confirm root using
"adb shell"
"su"
Install CWM using "dd" or "cat" to mmcblk0p13
Copy any custom ROM to my sdcard,
boot into CWM
Can I flash these customs ROMs successfully ?
If not , why not...
If yes , then why does the guide tell me to flash AT&T version of Gingerbread to install CWM.
P.S i have not been able to boot into AT&T GB using ANY guide so far.
I have been able to use CWM and root access on Korean GB though.

i'm fairly new here but i'm pretty sure about the following:
if you booting into cwm you dont need to unbrick. unbrick is for if you've bricked your phone through a fail flash or corrupted d/l or w/e.
if your reading a unbricking guide thats why its telling you to flash to at&t because if your phone is upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich then it got bricked by secure bootloader that gets installed.
you should be able to flash a custom rom as long as you follow the proper procedure, find the procedure for installing the rom you are using and follow it.
note: ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR ORIGINAL ROM IN CWM before flashing a custom rom. reasons for this are you could have problems with the rom and have to revert, among other things, also you may not like the new mod and want to go back for preference etc.
for my p930 i run cyanogenmod 10, it's jelly bean and it seems to be stable, after all it is marked as stable by the developer, here is a link for d/l and install instructions if you want to try it.
http://get.cm/?device=p930 this is where you can download CyanogenMod one of the most popular, there are others though if you are curious google them. I recommend a stable version for your first flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980505 <-- install guide, click on the show content button under the kind of rom you are installing... READ THE WARNINGS ON THIS PAGE.
*edit* dont forget to backup your contacts/apps that you want to be sure you have for your custom Rom as well. titanium backup is the generally recommended app for backing up apps and their data, there are tonnes of apps that do contact backups.
i was going through threads and i noticed that u have the SU version of the phone, make sure you get a rom that is compatible with SU640
So I'm going to be following this persons guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyJq_Ta8Y9Y&list=WL&index=8 to root (I wanna make sure I don't brick it).
Is there a way to root my phone, use titanium backup and then unlock bootloader and stuff without losing my data?
I was then going to install this custom ROM

Question is, does the kernel auto install or do I need to click the github, download as ZIP and flash it ?
Kind of don't want to brick my phone as things have sort of changed.
Have rooted 3 phones before but now things have changed. The kernels auto installed for me, now I don't know.
