It seems that the stock camera compress the pictures a lot. Are there any ways to adjust the compression way? maybe smali the camera.apk? Thanks.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I´d like to know it too. The compression is pretty strong and you can see artifacts even on pictures taken with good light.
I downloaded Camera 360 for this reason - adjustable compression (if I remember)
Try igcamera free version, its the best if you ask me, Camera ICS+ is also good.
Cheers.
Wow! I didn't realize how aggressive the compression was until I tested this.
Took two pictures of the same subject, one with each camera app:
Default Camera app: 1.3mb
ICS Camera app: 4.3mb.
ICS camera pic has noticeably better quality.
Why would HTC do this? What is the benefit of making the pictures so small? They did this on the Vivid, too, including video, and it kind of ruined the quality.

Yup kinda of sucks doesn't it?
Also checkout the different in bit rate when recording with the stock camera and the igcamera or ICS+
You get like 12 mbps in bit rate with the stock and with the others you get 30 or more igcamera has the option to go to 100mbps, the difference is very noticeable.

I'd say it's probably for faster uploading to the web. Dropbox, social networks etc. Which is probably what most users are going to do with the photos they take of their mates vomiting in the gutter when pissed up.

I have just installed the igcamera and the quality is REALLY REALLY superior to HTC's stock camera. It really makes you wonder what was HTC thinking.
What's igcamera and where can I get it from please ?

Ics takes worse pictures than stock I found, grainy in low light and over exposed out side.
I took a picture of my dogs in the river by my house with both stock and ics, and ics made the water purple.

Any other alternatives aside from ics+ and igcamera.? I've found both to be extremely unstable.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Well I tried the lgcamera and ics camera.. well the lgcamera is bad in low light conditions and ics camera crops the photo.. it doesn't take advantage of the full ratio.. by the way what I did observe the phone gets heated up like crazy at 50 degrees battery temperature.. well loosing a little detail to battery drain I don't mind.. I generally take portrait or group photos in good lighting conditions.. well this is my take on this..

These three photos were taken one after the other in the same conditions, first one is with the stock camera, second one is with camera 360 and the third one is taken with ICS camera, I prefer the stock, more natural colours in my opinion, what does everyone think. This is the north coast of Ireland.
I'm not a pro by any means, but I think we can all agree that images shot in low light conditions with the HTC one x lack detail and are extremely grainy. The image chip was supposedly going to give us a superior camera experience but after trying the stock camera, ics + and a few others I'm still less than impressed. Not giving up hope yet though that the right software modifications could still make this a great point and shooter, as under perfect lighting it performs extremely well.
I'm currently trying procapture. In direct comparison with other alternatives mentioned here, I am finding the images to be of marginally better quality when pointing and shooting in shades and less than ideal indoor lighting. Although blacks remain too gray for my taste.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
The camera takes great pictures under good lighting as examplified by your images. My problem is that for everyday situations, where lighting is usually not ideal, the picture quality is horrendous.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I've tried almost every camera application I can find and, honestly, I find the stock HTC camera app to be the best. Some applications are better in certain situations, but the stock camera app is the best all round. People always complain about the terrible low light pictures but with the exception of the Galaxy S 3 and some of the Xperia range, I've never owned a phone that can take such good photos.
The advert with the sky diver taking videos and photos is ridiculous and misleading though, those videos and pictures would look awful!

I agree with you but the recording is nicer with ICS due to the bit rate which HTC SHOULD have fixed somehow...
With every app i tried video recording looses focus
refocusses every 20-25sec or so
Any one else allready noticed that all one x's have lag in the burst shots? tested it on 3 different units all the same result.
When you keep taking burst shots the lag will increase because phone is to slow to store them in time. thats not the worst part. the worst part is that these delayed burst shots will not be saved once you stop shooting. so when the object you want to picture is passed by and you stop shooting you still dont have it in your burst shots. because all taken pictures that are in queue to be saved are lost when you release the camera button.
Also picture are never really sharp. HTC put a filter over it to let them look sharp. but the smae thing can be done sharpen it in photoshop. it only creates noise on the picture so it looks sharp on small screens. but when viewing it full size it gives pretty ugly pictures.
HTC always had crappy camera units build in to their devices and the one x is no exception. only now they put in software to make it look like its better.
Hi everyone
I have a request if someone could help me out?
The shutter speed of the One X is 1/2500th of a second; This is really fast, or maybe too fast? Extremely high shutter speeds can negatively impact image quality and decrease the Signal to Noise raito in a picture since it will come out darker. I was wondering if anyone knows a way of decreasing the shutter time to perhaps 1/500th of a second? I'm fairly confident it would get rid of the noise in our One X pictures that remains there even when the ISO is set to 100 and the picture is taken in fairly good lighting. Thank you
The noise is just compression from the stock camera app, try LG camera, has a much better quality and detail to the picture.

interesting point. From my understanding, it is a problem of the very aggressive compression as stated by the fellow above.
Whatever happened to that camera mod that fixed the compression in the camera pictures?
Has anyone ever reviewed or compared the modded camera with the original and the competition(sgs3 and iphone)? I think it would finally do justice to the hox's camera

The shutter speed is NOT fixed on the One X (check the EXIF Data on your photos) and if it was, it certainly wouldn't be 1/2500th... 1/20th of a second would be more realistic.
The shutter speed itself has NO impact on signal to noise ratio. However, an indirect result of a fast shutter is that the 'gain' on the CCD is increased (commonly defined as ISO speed). The greater the gain, the more sensitive the CCD becomes, and thus increases in noise. This is why night time pictures are far noisier than bright daylight ones. ALL of this assumes a fixed aperture lens (which most camera phones are).
The real noise issue is twofold...
1) The lens is small, and although it's F/2. that's F/2 of a lousy size lens.... in essence, it's too small to capture enough light to be a decent camera. This then results in the gain of the CCD being very high and producing noise (a bit like the buzz/hiss of an amplifier turned up to max).
2) The compression using in HTC's JPG storage is quite aggressive, resulting in JPEG noise/artefacts. Whilst not noise from the camera per se, it just makes the images even worse.
ALL digital cameras suffer from noise, but the professional cameras have far better noise reduction, massive CCD's and dedication image processing DSP's that simply leave a humble One-X in its wake. The long and short of this is:
Camera phones for genuine photography are a very bad idea, and until there's some amazing technological breakthrough people are deluding themselves about the quality of image that can be obtained from them. That's not to say you can't get great photos, you can, but the image quality simply isn't there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765416&highlight=camera+mod
That fixes the JPEG compression issue, but video recording is still not a perfect 30 fps. Frames are dropped at a rate of about one a second, but it's still a huge improvement over stock.
I think it is possible to set shutter speed of the camera module, but HTC seems to have prioritized sharper shots at the expense of higher sensor noise. It is a reasonable compromise for these situations as it is not easy to hold a phone still for long periods of time. Perhaps HDR mode might be able to help, but that is only for still shots.
There is hardly any or no difference between LgCamera (or any of the camera apps) and the stock app, videos are smoother but pictures are very much the same.

Yep ive changed settings and took many pictures, they all turn out pretty much the same apart from certain focus differences.
Lgcamera and other programs have the same problem. The image appears really "grainy". It's not digital compression but rather the photos turning out like that. This in turn affects image quality. Even images taken in daylight are grainy; take a picture of the sky and you'll see what I mean. Zoom in a little and you see it. My Sensation XE had a better camera than my One X, mainly as the noise was practically non-existant and images came out very detailed. It seems BSI sensors perhaps generate more noise? Or it could be that heat can result in increased digital noise; ISO increasing results in more current to the sensor to pick up more light but the heat generated as a result produces noise. Since the One X heats up around the Camera area, it could be possible that the Tegra 3 chips are located there, providing constant heat that also unintentionally hesting up the sensor and resulting in increased noise levels in images?
If either if you are rooted, you should really install the HQ Camera mod. It modifies the settings of the stock app, and you can easily get 4MB pics with really good sharpness and colour. High ISO noise is less too. Really works wonders, and I'm really really really picky about my photos (retired portrait photographer)
Tried finding this online and on the forum here, but I was hoping some of you could look through a few of your photos and give me an average file size for full size 16MP photos. I have an S6 and am pretty disappointed with battery life like most people, and I was shocked to see that my photos average 6MB each. I love the camera and image quality, but I'm wondering if the G4 does any better.
The smallest I've seen is 4.6 MB for the jpeg (assuming you don't mean RAW/DNG, right?), but I haven't done long exposure shots to make it go past 6 MB per file.
I do want to remind you that file size doesn't really mean better quality.
Yes, JPG. I'm not concerned about RAW imaging on my phone. Too much hassle to transfer to computer, delete the originals off the phone, etc. I'm also not super concerned with image quality; looking for fairly high compression and acceptable image quality. Both cameras are excellent, so I was curious how the G4 does.
I couldn't find for the life of me how to adjust file size. Is it just 16 megapixels? It can't be adjusted... I mean like taper down? Maybe I sometimes need to take a pic @ 3 megapixels so the file size it's not too heavy....

Looks like you can't right now. You can change to 4:3 mode which is slightly smaller.
It's very very limited. There is like nothing on the menu... No b&w options sephia, night, sports...etc.. Further... When editing a pic the only options that work are auto, crop and rotate; there are more options but they don't do anything when you touch them...

I appreciate you sharing this and all but...... The V10 camera is capable of producing a photo that is 5312 pixels x 2988 pixels, that has 16 million pixels in it. That is the maximum that the sensor is capable of producing. They are not ever REALLY going to be able to increase it 4x without physically changing the camera sensor. You can modify the dimensions of the image all you want, but the sensor just cant do any more than 16mp

You cannot change the sensor size, but you can get different number of pixels with the same sensor size, you have 23 Mp phone cameras with same size sensor, or smaller, than others with 12 Mp, like the last Samsung and Huawei, etc...
Having said that, you dont get more info, just 4x more pixels extrapolated from the original. The photos do look sharper, as I confirmed with my tests, but when I resize them to same size, they look the same, and the files are so large they wont load to apps, or be resized like on facebook and look the same again
Bottom line, only worth if we want to make a large print or display in a large hi-rez screen

The point I was trying to make (although maybe not all that well), is that you CAN increase the size of the picture, you can make it 100000x160000 and have a picture at 16GP, but if the sensor is only capable of capturing 16MP, you're going to have a pixilated image. Even with some very fancy software work.
With the actual resolution the V10 is capable of taking photos, they can be printed out to large format or displayed on any large monitor without ANY issues at all. (I have a 12mp DSLR and have printed photos up to 4ft wide with EASE)
I guess I'm just calling BS on what is really being accomplished and the expectations that are being set that the app is going to "Get your 16mp camera shoot a 63mp photo"

You are right. This superpixel camera gives a fake better image. I taken the same image in the same condition with the original V10 H961N camera and with the supercamera, analysed both in paintshop after magnifying and the details in supercamera are very dissapointing. Uninstalled without regrets.
My Sony NEX6 camera has a much larger sensor than the V10, but the same 16 Mp resolution...
I am not saying this app will have 4 times more detail, but dividing every pixel in 4 blended with the pixels around, if properly done, will increase sharpness, as I confirmed with my tests.
Having said that, I will not use it, not worth what we loose on features
The results are real, the app is using a well known photoshop technique but in-app.
Olympus is also using it to up their resolution on their e-m5mII camera.

I recommend having a look at cortexcamera. It uses a similar "trick", but increases the size by only 50%. The result is a stunning 24 MP photo with almost no visible noise and lots of details with no adverse affects from noise reduction. There are a number of limitations though that are basically inherent in the technic. It's best used for rather static scenes and between shots the phone needs a couple of seconds to calculate the resulting image (combined from up to 100 single frames). That being said especially for night or landscape shots I find the results impressive.
Using the Super Resolution Method does not add any more details. Of course it is limited by the sensor. But by doing this, noise is greatly reduced and artifacts like Moire get removed since the program averages the images. This method is done by professional photographers if they want to enhance images when using a mid range shooter.

There are certain benefits upon doing this 4x Spatial Reso Increase. The details don't bump up so much but noise gets significantly reduced and edges become much more detailed rather than edgy. Still its an improvement than nothing. Tho the hype should be re calibrated.

Exactly this. I was just about to mention the OM-D E-M5 MII. This camera has a 16MP sensor but has a 40MP high-res shooting mode which combines eight exposures into a single image which is how it can manage to get such a high pixel count out of a sensor that's only natively capable of 16MP. You and your subject would need to be completely still though as any movement can create blurs and jagged lines but the results are real, there is a noticeable difference if you look closely.
But that's if you look closely. Having a high pixel counts doesn't mean much unless you need extremely large prints and even then, have you guys seen the huge billboards from Apple saying that the picture was taken with an iPhone 6 or 6S? That's a 8MP and 12MP sensor respectively. Of course, they probably edited the pictures like there's no tomorrow but then if you were going for such huge prints, you probably wouldn't be printing directly from the in camera RAW or JPEG file.
As a hobbyist photographer, I would say learn the manual settings in the built-in camera app. It's more than enough to squeeze the best possible pictures you can get out of the V10's camera. Then go out and buy yourself a MILC or DSLR (but MILC is probably the smarter choice).
thanks for posting this app

Image processing is way better in stock lg cam app
Yeah pixel count does not matter much. 16mp is plenty for most pics. Unless the program managed to use the ois in here to emulate what the Olympus OMD EM5 Mark II does I dont see how it would get a actual useable larger pixel count without the possiblity of introducing digitial artifacts in the image. And even then unless you were shooting non moving subjects in a studio environment you would get that ghosting effect in the pics. Id rather just take regular shots in Raw and post process if I need to work the pics some more. On a side note, the 5 axis OIS on the Olympus is very Nice. I agree with a previous poster about learning what the manual controls do. Then get a nice camera if you are serious about taking better shots.
