Hi There!
I got my wife one of these to replace her Motorola Defy.. She has a few questions I couldn't really answer...
1) She seems to be having problems with signal and therefore internet connectivity. All our other 6 devices wireless fine. It's running 4.04 Android Custom ROM. I read recently 4.04 users were reporting issues with the signal strength and wondering if I should change back to 4.03?
2) She says whites are not really white and when I compare to the Defy it would appear she is right.
3) She says the text doesn't look as sharp or crisp and again I am inclined to agree. I am not sure if this is a Pixel Density issue or a setting we can change.
4) Battery life is shocking. I'd say she is lucky to get 8 hours if she talks on the phone for perhaps 45 minutes a day. I am interested to know what a reasonable baseline expectation is.. Right now she is barely touching it.
5) Are the Nexus and Nexus S supported in the same forums and take the same ROMS?
NM I found the S Forums, sorry to have bothered you.
I think some users have found setting the Min CPU frequency to 729 instead of 384 helps to alleviate the signal drop issue. I have not experienced it myself. It might help if you report what rom/kernel you are using.
I personally get excellent battery life. Try enabling auto brightness and disabling auto-sync on data heavy applications such as some news readers or facebook. You can install CPUSpy and BetterBatteryStats to get an idea if your phone is properly going into deep sleep when idle and if not, what is preventing it from doing so.
Nexus S roms are NOT compatible with the Galaxy Nexus.
Thanks how do I change cpu frequency?

This could be a normal thing but I've never really paid attention to my battery life until now. Since I have rooted and switched to different roms my battery life has been sub-par. Since using Desire-Z the life has improved, but still not as good as it was before I rooted.
Anyway, it says the display is taking up 89% of my usage which I find obsurd. I had the brightness set down to 30% so I don't see how it's possible. Could it be I have a very vibrant wallpaper set? Should I tone it down? The screen is set to turn off after a minute but when I'm done i typically lock it manually. Other than the wallpaper i don't see what I can do differently???
Is there some bug that I don't know of, is it just a false reading? Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated.
go to ziggy471.com and try his latest nov kernel,14th I believe, and give it a try. after that try dl setcpu and just setup a profiles for when the screen is off to run under 600 mhz. thats what I do and get pretty good batt life. otherwise try some other kernels and see how they work out. another thing I actually don't know how much the display sucks from the battery but I keep my auto-bright off and display at like 10% maybe all the time

This seems to be the case with both the Desire Z and HD ROMs. I'm not exactly sure why but it happens to me and I saw a few other people talking about this.
I had a lot of trouble with this also... with stock battery I was lucky to get 8 hours out of the phone... I bounce between CM and MIUI and it seem the newest MIUI rom has greatly improved this issue... it did however introduce a new battery hog with the wireless drivers, but atleast that can be addressed with some tasker profiles or by manually turning it on and off. Im only 2 days into this rom and not quite ready to give someone a hug for the improvements yet, but i seems as though things are much better.
Hello this is my first topic that I have posted up, I am aware that there is hundreds of these same type of topics posted up, and I apologize for another one lol.
Just wanted to get thoughts from other members on these results on battery life through AOKP b37(stock kernel that comes with aokp, without touching the CPU settings)
CDMA (with extended battery)
Settings profile:
Basically followed every guide on turning off certain settings to save battery (GPS,wifi use, rotation, vibrate and etc.)
Brightness: 4O Percent
Wifi: 80-90 percent on
Few phone calls
Decent amount of texts
I know that there is a lot Rom/kernel combos and every phone will give different results, but searching through other posts I have noticed that Franco kernel give fantastic performance and battery life to many users and give recommendations to other users to use it.
To me still kinda scratching my head and uncertain if these are decent, bad or good results, and having opinions will help me understand better
PS. Sorry for grammar
Via Galaxy Nexus [LTE]
That's just fine for a CDMA Nexus. It might even be a little better.

I've been running the 9/15 nightly, and while I haven't had excellent battery life, it has typically lasted around 8 hours or more. Today was a little different; with only an hour of screen time, my battery was down to 30%. On top of that, it usually takes 3 or 4 presses of the home button to wake my phone up.
EDIT: I forgot to add that my screen usage usually accounts for 60%, or more, of my battery usage--and that's with minimal usage. It always seemed like my screen was draining the battery even when it was off. It is much less now.
I read on the forums that a simple increase of the minimum frequency can resolve the waking issue. However, it didn't; instead, my battery life improved dramatically. I'm used to a pretty jagged and sharp battery graph, but now it's as smooth and linear as I have ever seen it.
Can anyone explain why raising the min freq improved my battery life?

Why don't you update? Its Oct 5th. Maybe give that a try? Old build man.
Well, I've considered it, but I always check the main thread first. It always seems like people are having LTE or GPS issues with the new build. Everything, aside from the battery life and screen waking, has been working exceptionally well. Not to mention, school and work hasn't given me enough free time to experiment with the new builds. I might try this tonight though.

The rom actually updates EVERY DAY you have missed many many updates here is a changelog http://changelog.bbqdroid.org/#d2att/cm10/1349329973
well all devices are not created equal. i suppose its possible that the ideal minimum frequency for your device is a above stock (or whatever you had it at before). raising the minimum frequency can improve cell connection, screen flickering issues, ect (things that cause battery drain).
also i advise you to update your cm build. either that or switch to cm monthly or another rom that doesn't push out critical updates every night. Try a rom that is considered stable like liquidsmooth, slimbean..
On the Oct 3 build and it's very fast. Batter life has been quite bad, have to charge it twice a day. Had a lot of crashing yesterday, phone decided to reboot continuously. Apollo has stopped error persisted until I cleared cache, and keep getting email/exchange devices have stopped errors until I disabled email.
Battery is the only thing that really bugs me though
Not sent from my toilet with a soap bar.
@nccu_eagles & @jefferson9: To be honest, I never realized the minimum frequency affected so many different elements outside of power saving. I admit I haven't kept it up-to-date; I'm always afraid to update after seeing some of the bugs people post. Perhaps I would be better off with a more stable release--at least until the semester is over, which will leave me with much more time to dabble. If I finish my homework in time, I might try a few different roms tonight.
@adammur: Those are the type of bugs that keep me from updating.
On another note, today's battery life has been great. My battery would normally drain between 12-20% an hour. Today, I'm averaging 5% an hour with similar usage. :good: Anyways, thank you guys for the replies. I'll see if I can't find something to better suit me.... for now :fingers-crossed:.
Before playing with the TouchWiz Jellybean Milestone 5 (Firefly) ROM by Drew Garen, I was running the JellyBro's euroskank October 3rd nightly along with LeanKernel as well as JuiceDefender Ultimate...
My Galaxy S3 could literally last 2 days with that setup. It was UNREAL.
The problem is, I really actually do like the TouchWiz interface (I know I know, I'm one of the few).
But if ultimate battery life is your goal with the Samsung Galaxy S3... Do a factory reset / cache wipe and install the Oct 3rd version of JellyBro's euroskank for the d2att... Then go ahead and install yourself the tmobile / AT&T version of leankernel...
You WILL NOT be sorry!

What did you increase it to, if you don't mind me asking?
I normally use up-to-the-moment builds (downloading 10/07 ad I write) and my battery life has been reasonable - up to two days total with light use. Seems to me to be a matter of making sure you're not running too many (any?) battery-hogging apps (BetterBatteryStats has been enormously helpful in this respect).
Unfortunately, I was unable to play with anything last night due to homework. I did, however, purchase and install BBS and JD. I'm actually at work right now, so I can't really post much other than a few screenshots.

I increased it from 384 to 486. So far it seems to have helped a lot. I'm actually about to try a couple different ROMs and see how they go. Wish me luck :cyclops:

You are not alone, I enjoy the functions/features of the OTA ROMs.
Notification accessible when in full screen apps, the multi-window screen lets you "clear all" and access task manager&Google Now, the stock dialer has more efficient functions(Displays all calls from a contact if selected, slide right/left to call/send sms)
But going back on topic, I set my cpu to be conservative but I'm not sure if that'll save battery.
I want to be able to game when at work but not have the power-saving setting limit it yet still be able to last me a day. The OTA ROMs' power-saving feature was able to do that.
Hi all.
Obviously, mi issue is with low fps in playing ingress. I can't understand, why.....here is my explanation:
In casual gameplay (one or two portals visible), I have still around 30fps - which is great, but when I go to city center, where there is much higher portal concentration, my fps drops down to 10-19fps (almost the same, that I got with my old HTC Desire Z (9-15)). I've asked few people with galaxy nexus and they all have around 30fps all the time, even in city center (even on stock rom)
Even my friend with galaxy note (similar hw performance, like my gnex) have almost all the time around 30fps.
I was really looking forward to this phone and to new game experience, which it should have had, but I'm little dissapointed
I've tried:
Stock 4.2.2 (with root)
CM 10.1 with their kernel
CM 10.1 with franco kernel (my actual configuration)
I've also tried messing with overclocking (very unstable results in benchmarks (one test 1500points on cpu, second right after first gave me i.e. 400points etc)
from developer menu I use only Forced GPU for 2D
from performance menu I have: stock cpu, stock I/O, zRAM 26%, Allowed purging of assets, and enabled 16bit transparency
Could someone please point me, where could be the problem? I would be very greatful
Thanks in advance, zipp
edit: screenshots
I am completely stock and performance is weak. Not to mention that I have to kill and restart the app or it absolutely fails to give me a correct location. It might not be our hardware. Perhaps its the extreme beta nature of the game. Even folks on the S3 and N4 are complaining.

I began Ingress with the AOKP JB MR3 rom. It was very smooth in the beginning when I was at level 1. Now I am a level 6 and I've noticed the recent lag.
It may not be our hardware, but the google servers entirely.
When I try to attack a resonator, it take up to 10 seconds to fire an XMP. When I hack, it takes a good 5-8 seconds. Say good-bye to double hacks.
Google had a g+ meetup on this. I think they are getting more servers or something...

I see the same on Gnex LTE running rooted 4.2.2.
Plus, it absolutely kills my battery. When plugged into a 2.1 amp charger in the car, the battery drains if Ingress is running.
Also, I have to first start GPS Test app, get a GPS lock, then start Ingress or it takes forever to load and locate.
Much of the lag is on the Google server side. At times, the game has been unplayable, taking 1-2 minutes for each action. Then, I just turn it off and try a few hours later.
Remember, Ingress is still a closed beta.
As i started playing Ingress i owned a Desire HD CM10.1 device.
Performance was pretty poor even on playgrounds without portals. After my first 2 levels i bought a Nexus4. Hoped that the performance will be much better, but i have the same lags on N4 like on the DHD. Of course if i'm at a Location where there are no portals, performance is much better than on DHD but if i go to an urban location it lags everytime.....
topic battery:
I think it's normal that battery life sucks while playing, because ingress tries to locate you as good as the smartphone gets the location with its sensors + permanent internet traffic -> permanent working modem IC.
Everything on the smartphone uses battery while playing....
I hope that Niantic will increase performance on our devices.
If anybody has a suggestion how to increase performance tell us.
My fps drops to 2-7fps whether one portal or 10. I wish I had your problem.

Hi
Hope you are all doing well. I am coming from Optimus 3D and I was moving to S3 until I saw this device. In my country it is only available used (Korean F180 versions ~300$). I have read lots of posts and reviews and I was confused due to heating issue. Firstly is this even a issue, if yes how to check if it exist in the mobile. The sellers here have Gs in factory reset condition and not allowing me to install any game or benchmark(kind of selling in as in condition) I do realize that the mobile was constantly changing brightness even when I was just scrolling and checking camera etc(unable to brighten...). Cut short what do I need to check in approx 1/2 an hour. Thanks for your time
When I first got the phone and was running stock, unrooted, I would get the "unable to brighten due to temperature" message pretty often, but it never caused any problems other than a minor annoyance. Since rooting & running custom ROMs I've always had the screen at maximum brightness, and while it does get warm after heavy use, I've never had any problems with it.

Check this out. On the Korean phone it may be different, but I bet the same menus exist somewhere.
I'm guessing that since you live outside of America that you have the E975 model. The screen dimming and processor throttling is done to avoid overheating. You can disable it without any problems.Go to the dialer and enter 3845#*975# . It will take you to the hidden menu. Scroll all the way down to "Thermal Daemon Mitigation Off". It should be set to off by default. Switch it to on. This will stop the processor throttling and screen dimming.
thanks guys I bought it
If u set ur kernel tweaks on trickster mod then u will never get any over heating... Maybe a little warm but not overheat. When I first bought this phone I was experiencing bad overheating and that was every time I use the phone. Then I downloaded trickster mod and set the I/o scheduler and gov etc... And I never experienced overheating and my battery life went threw the roof!! And custom kernels help a lot as well.
