Hi everyone. I'm using my E4GT on AOKP Build 33 and Codename Android and everyone constantly talks about changing DPIs. I'm just wondering... what are the pros and cons to changing DPI? And what problems are known to occur if you do so? If I'm not mistaken, DPI stands for dots per inch, so wouldn't a higher DPI be better in terms of quality? Why would people want to lower it then? Thanks.

I do it because more fits on the screen and makes it look more high Res. Typical settings would be something from the 180-200 range but I prefer 160. Some cons would be maybe harder to press on screens buttons since their smaller, some apps not working and market not being compatible at that DPI. Just try it out and see if you like it. I would start at 200 and go lower from there if you want.

Aokp rom 160dpi. Only complaint I have is the notification bar being so small and difficult to pull down at times but I'm starting to get use to it.

There is an app, called "LCD Resolution".
It lets rooted phones to change the resolution. It is free and works on ace.
Looks cool.. Post a comment if you used it.. and what setting is optimum.
It just changes the screen density. However, if you really are intent on using it, try 140 and your 2d performance will improve a little bit.
Muhaha from pocketnow
You can d this also manually by editting build.prop or with lcd density

Two screenshot collections. One before other after setting to 140 (also added more columns with ADW).
My language has long words, this helps to see full length words in settings menu.

have you tried make/recieve a call with a different lcd density? i guess your phone app will simply crash.
If there is a solution please, i'll be very glad to know about because my ace with a 140 density is much more appealing to the eye!
Great apk. And which smalest can change density 140 or smalest?

Just booted with 80 (940x640)
I'm wondering, since 800x480 game resolutions wont fit Galaxy Ace's screen, will changing the density to 800x480 from 480x320 make it fit? Haha just curious though

So it only changes the density, not the physical resolution of the screen, right?
Don't get it. Conventionally High Dpi = High resolution but it seems the opposite in this application.
Did you notice any loss of sharpness guys?
Using now 120, 110 status bar fc, 100 bootloop
If you do this keep it mind that it breaks the market, most things will say your device is incompatible, and lots of stuff will be missing.
At eny resolution i try i got crush of com.android.phone all other work good but i cant use phone for call :/ wen i got o try make call .. crush ;/

To anyone who wants a higher LCD density on our beautiful screen but can't stand the market issues, I recently found this app on the market for only $3. It changes the density and edits the market to make it think the density is 240 so there are no compatibility issues . Definitely worth the money, so check it out if you want:

I personally use 200 because it looks nice but doesn't affect the grid size on my homescreen, which I like at 4x4.

Yes, but the awesome thing that this app does differently is that it fixes the market compatibility issues that changing the density causes

Not that I know of. For some reason all touchwiz type things don't play nice with raised density.

There's nothing you can really do but either get a dailer replacement on the market or just run and AOSP rom because they have no problems with higher density.

Other than for visual purposes, what is a benefit to have this. I have never used lcd app to change my density. I have used something similar on my vibrant but everything looked too small.

I can't think of anything really besides maybe that it lets you see more things at once on the screen in some situations (like in your contacts or browser). It doesn't really look too small (IMO) on this screen because it's so big lol.
Yeah. Fron what ive seen it seems to mess with other things, such as dialer being messed up and market issues. If i can avoid purchasing an app i will if i dont necessarily "need" it. Thank you for your reply.

220 was perfect for me. Made icons large and the text large so that my screens would look the same. Using exdialer since stock dialer didn't stretch. Perfect now with extra resolution.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The pixel density of this screen compared to it's size is exactly 206 (check gsmarena or do the math). Hence that is what I use for DPI. It really showcases the screen as it fits so damn much and everything is legible and sized right.
Ofc, on stock, this doesn't work good.

Simple fix, go back to 320 DPI.

My solution, don't use Landscape
Don't rotate your phone, problem solved.. i've been running 241 dpi for a while now.. runs perfect in portrait mode, only time i go landscape is for web surfing.
Thanks I solved it. Just disabled the search.

What's the benefit of running a 241dpi vs 240? Can't think of it making much of a difference, other than the market being fidgety with 241.

some launchers dont work to well aka adw launcher and youtube app can be annoying at times on 240 also when you go to 246 you no longer get the problem of contact pictures being super zoomed in when you click on them

What is the screen resolution? IE there is 360, 600, 720, 800 etc. I just got it today and I am messing with some theming and don't want to waste time on the wrong ones. I'm theming systemui right now

The lower dpi = higher "resolution" gives you more screen space smaller icons looks way better then the stock huge icons.
You should try it.
I did it with rom toolbox under screen density.

Using 340 right now myself and and it works well. I don't use Buiild.prop to do it so I don't have problems with the dialer. I use Xposed to set it on a per app basis.

Either by editing build.prop (this will cause scaling issues with touchwiz apps like the dialer) or by using app settings
You're going to need root access and the Xposed framework see here
Using App settings will allow you to change DPI on a per app basis.
320 is working well for me.
I will give 320 a try as well. I switched to a build prop edit for 340 and using closed to switch dialer, contacts, and gallery back to 480.

I really wish we could just recenter the dialer because I really can't stand how big it is, even at 440. Or even just make it scale to the right side instead of left lol.

It's easier to use App settings to control DPI on a per app basis.
