Don't all wp7 owners get 25 Gb anyway. Thought that was normal or am I missing something?
Sent from my Radar 4G using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Well yeah the title is a little bit misleading.
SkyDrive used to offer 25GB for every user for free, but today they decreased that to only 7GB because over 99% use less than 7GB (and that is still more than Dropbox offers).
However, if you have been a user in the past and already use more than 7GB you will get to keep your free 25GB. If you do not use more than 7GB of the service you have to sign in and go to manage storage, from there you can get a free upgrade to 25GB for the time being.
Also as a side note if you made a account after April 1st you will not get the free upgrade. For New WP users they had to April 22, if you already had more than 7gb on SkyDrive you will be automatically keep the old 25GB storage amount. Now I would advise people to go hit up your old hotmail accounts and click that free upgrade.
Thanks
The title is a bit misleading and maybe think about changing it , but you are correct and thanks for the information. just took advantage of the free upgrade

Anyway, anyone noticed any kind of " show deleted files", or "previous versions"? Dropbox features that, and would be wierd if SkyDrive didnt.

IIRC there is Revision tracking for Office documents. You can see who edited what and revert changes.
I just upgraded my account to 25GB and installed the SkyDrive App on Windows. Now I have automatic synchronization of my documents between SkyDrive, my PC and Lumia 800. Epic

Thanks for this....I've been using skydrive for a long time now but, just for a few documents and some WP7 apps (store their files on it). I was using less than 1gb, but, now I got plenty of space.
Can Zune (on my WP7 phone) stream from there ?
Zune, currently, cannot stream from SkyDrive, but Cloud Music can.

Can anyone with an actual WP7 device confirm what kind of access they have to Skydrive? Some people are under the impression that you can stream your music and video files from there thereby explaining why some OEM's have only installed 8GB of storage on their devices.
Also, has anybody seen any 3rd party app that have access to files on a users Sky drive?

That is a fckin retarded explaination so I don't think so.
Streaming your music and other media from the Cloud simply doesn't work. We need 100% guaranteed and fast data connections at all times, something that doesn't exist for now.
To be fair even 8GB is quite a lot for some users like me
I think they should allow bigger sized phones or an SD card expansion slot for those users who do love putting lots of music / big apps / films on their phones.
I don't have a device but I'm 99% sure you can't stream music from Skydrive. I don't think they even let you put music there. But if you have a Zune pass, you can stream music from there.
Why have many OEMs been installing 8gb in so many devices? Because they're dumb and cheap.
Zune
Well skydrive is for docs and pictures.
Zune and later spotify is for music streaming.
When i first got my samsung omnia 7 i thought that 8gb was waaaay to small but i havnt filled it more then 30% yet

30% in what, a week or two, at most? If that isnt proof that 8GB is far from enough I dont know what is.
Good news... there are rumours of further integrated SkyDrive support http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archive...ight_bring_turn-by-turn_gps_and_skydrive.html
Whether this means 3rd party apps will be able to access it though is another question.
A lot of manufacturers have been putting 8GB in phones because that is the minimum spec. Some have 16GB, and some (e.g. Samsung Focus & Dell Venue Pro) have an SD card slot as well so you can add 32GB on an SD card.
So if you want lots of storage, so for a phone with the slot. HTC phones don't have a slot.
Incidentally, Skydrive is really just online storage for synching files with your laptops, desktops and phones, using MESH. It exists so a synched copy of your file exists online AS WELL AS on your devices, should you require it. My understanding is that full support for synching with Skydrive via MESH is not currently in WP7 but is coming soon. However I understand you can copy Office / OneNote files to your Skydrive already.

No. its more than that. It's 25 gb of storage and its not just for mesh. Please do some research.
Its google docs, picasa web, and more on overdrive.
Dont expect syncing with mesh for phone. Mesh can hold up to 5gb which would cap most people's data in a day. Its a pc took. You can still access skydrive from any mobile browser anyways... But it has wp7 integration...

OK it's not *just* for MESH but that is the best way of using it because then the Skydrive copy of your files gets synched to all your devices. Mesh now uses (with the new 2011 release) all the 25GB of Skydrive if you want it to. Mesh supports PCs but you'll notice you can also add Mobile Phones to your device list.
It is Microsoft's intention to add WP7 support so that files can synch across your so-called "three screens plus the cloud" (i.e. laptop, desktop, phone and cloud).
Is there an app to access Skydrive on a WP7 device or is only web browser access currently?
at present only via the web, however i've heard that MS might be improving office a bit more to support skydrive a lot more.

Not true. At least some of them have SD slots which are accessible by opening the phone. I got a htc mozart with no warranty on ebay. Opened it, replaced 8GB storage card with 32GB. However, doing so will void your warranty.
I don't know why HTC actually implements an SD Slot without making it 'usable'.
Well, I can access SkyDrive from my phone (HTC HD7).
But i've not been able to download any of the documents onto my phone, so I can use them in MS Office.
Like other day, my mate wanted Poker rules for a party, copy and pasted them into a a Doc, put it on skydrive and went to the party, got skydrive up, looked for the document, opened it, was able to view/read it. But not able able to download onto my phone to edit it or save it or highlight key parts etc.
Unless i'm missing something, then my apologies.

This is my first post on this forum! I own a HTC HD7 since Nov 8th and seriously love it
You can download files from skydrive on the windows phone 7. Just make sure you visit the desktop version of Skydrive not the mobile. So in Internet Explorer on the wp7 go to settings make sure desktop mode is checked. Go to your skydrive location and select the file. tap lightly so youget the option to download file. I think its hidden under "more". Once you tap download, it goes directly to the office hub!
Any changes you make may need to be emailed to yourself to be sent back to skydrive again as there is currently no sync other than onenote.
Hope this helps

just got mine too, now what to do with all this space, can i backup my entire phone to it somehow?
Thank you very much for the info, I will take an extra 50 GB any time +1
very nice!!!
Good looking out!
The 100MB file size limit is very disappointing and I hope they change it in the near future. What's stunning is that the earlier version of this promotion, with the HP TouchPad for example, 50GB accounts also came with a 1GB file size limit. I can confirm this because I have since commandeered my friend's account with those limits.
There was also a way to to get 50GB under the LG Android promotion (we just edited build.prop, which is what the box.net app checked), but that too came with the 100MB limit.
It's great to have 50GB lifetime storage for free, but I really wish they upped the limit to >300MB. I find myself using my Dropbox (24GB storage, 300MB limit via mobile, unlimited file size via desktop). Write to BOX and ask for bigger limit, or post in their forums!
Sweet i'll take 50, thank you

Yes, I appreciate 50GB free storage, but without sync it is pretty useless. The point for me of having cloud storage is to backup my computer and have access to all my files in the cloud from my portable devices and to keep the files in sync from all these devices. I certainly don't need 50GB of storage to upload a few files from my phone. So will keep using dropbox, until I can figure away to sync.
Hate to sound ungrateful, it just is not that useful at this point.
How do i get my 25GB dropbox? I setup a new account on the phone when i set it up but i still only have the minimum
Same here, I logged into the app when i turned on the phone and I havent received my 23gb or any email. I installed a hacked XDA members app that game me 23gb before I got the phone but the next day Dropbox had removed the 23gb!
you have to invite people to join drop box in order to gain more space. Based on the email I got they just upped the Max amount of space you can get. You can also gain some space by uploading photos if you have not already.

That might have something to do with it; dropbox have said that they're going to be removing the space from people who used apps which spoofed the One X to get the extra 23GB, so if they've done that to your account it's probably not going to automatically re-add the space just because it's got another install claiming to be from a One X. You might need to contact them.

i got 2 mails from dropbox, followed the link in the one that says "follow this to claim your 23GB", landed in a 7-step process which you have to complete to get 250MB (as it says)...
didn't complete it btw, i'm on 4/7 or something
so what's with this mess?
1. do you get automatically 25GB after you create an account from the phone?
2. do you get 25GB after you complete that retarded 7-step thing instead of the displayed 250MB?
I got the mail 5 mins after I installed on my Desktop.
I take it back, it just worked.

I still have not got email from dropbox or increase in space after 2 days.
I'd like to ask you guys what can we used the 25GB for?
I currently have 7.2GB throught their beta program and only used 1.4GB. I mean we can not stream music with dropbox, got Google Music for that. We can not stream video without downloading it 1st, I've PLEX setup for that as well. Also the size is too small to be used as backup for files on PC.
So any ideas on how to use the 25GB space?

6 out of the 7, done them before getting the One X, only one left is to invite someone. Maybe there is a bug when most of the tasks are already done.
I'm not really bothered about the extra space on dropbox, but will send them an email if it still not working after a week.
I already setup a dropbox account a few weeks ago in preparation for when I got my one x - did the usual tricks to get some extra space to start with. As soon as I logged into dropbox on my one x, I got an email instantly advising me of the extra 23GB -great service imo.
Just need something to upload now lol - but of a useless feature for me at the moment now I think about it but I'm sure I will make use of it in the future.
Ok I have a theory. A friend of mine shares some of his files from his Skydrive to mine. When I open my Skydrive app and swipe to Shared page, there are his files. Okay so what does this mean?
Well.. if you create a new account (hotmail/outlook) you can then share all your folders/files with your first email account. All your files from your second account will be available on your Shared page in your Skydrive app of your first account.
Now if you had a hotmail account for a long time, you automatically get 25 gigs of storage. If you happen to have a second older account that means you can share another 25 gigs. Total 50 gigs of storage. If your second account is new, then you can share only 7 gigs. Total of 32 gigs of storage.
If you don't have old accounts then both newer accounts will have 7 gigs. Thus you could have a total of 14 gigs of storage.
Great huh? :good:
Now I haven't tried this out yet but I don't see why this should not work.
Interesting, one should try, and report whether it's actually convenient or not.
About the 25GB for old accounts, I wonder how you get that. My hotmail address was opened more than 10 years ago, but yet I only get 7GB. Is there something required to do in order to get 25G. That alone would already be a great improvement for me. With the unused old account of my wife, that'll make 50GB
Little while a go MS offered a free 7gb->25gb upgrade to users who clicked it in their account. I think its not available anymore.

Surely we could piggy back email acounts. Open new accounts and share 7 gigs and another 7 gigs and another 7 gigs to your defualt Skydrive account???
Ok finally managed to test this. Works fine as I suspected. Put lots of files in my second hotmail account and shared with my first default hotmail account and naturally the files appear in my shared page of the official Skydrive app. I have a total of 4 hotmail accounts. Two 25 gigs and two 7 gigs so in theory (if I wanted to) I could have access to 64 gigs of files in my Skydrive app. Wahay!!!
What do you do with all these files? Why do you need 64GB on the SkyDrive, especially for WP7? Actually, my DropBox free 19 GB account still filled by 40% only (but I'm developer and share huge ISO's between my PC's)

When I did it they had me complete 5 steps of 7 listed in order to get the 50Gbs. Steps included taking a tutorial, referring a friend, etc. Took me about 5 mins to complete.
All I had to do was to log into my dropbox with my new GS3 and I received the bonus space.
Invite more people to increase the space on dropbox.
I had a dropbox account prior to my SGS3 purchase. I've logged into my dropbox account with my S3 but don't see a way to get the free 50gb.
Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?
Thanks for any help

I did not do anything special. I did not even know about the bonus until it happened. I simply used the dropbox app on my phone to connect to my existing dropbox account. Shortly after that I received an email telling me about the bonus.
Got it to work but later found the e-mail. I had to install dropbox onto a second computer to qualify.
Don't forget folks that the S3 bonus space is only temporary. Just wanted to remind you guys of that. So if you intend to keep dropbox for all your cloud storing needs be aware it is only for about a year or two. After that I believe you would have to become a paying customer or loose the bonus storage. The S3 bonus storage is like forty something gigs from what I can remember. Sorry I don't have the specifics but you can check from your account online and see how much it is and when it expires.
An alternative if you need storage for your pics and vids is photobucket. It automatically uploads pics and vids, dropbox only does pics as of now, and you get unlimited storage with no expiration.
The bonus is for two years. I figure that by then I will either be buying s new phone (and hoping a similar deal is on) our that there are other options.
