Damaged USB Port - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
My friend's Galaxy Nexus seems to have a damaged USB port (it rarely charges and will not connect to a PC via Android, or fastboot).
It is unlocked running AOKP and I was wondering, what is the best course of action for a warranty return?
Remember, I cannot use adb or fastboot via USB as it WILL NOT connect.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Disable "Fast Charge" in the options. (I forget where in the menu's it is, probably Rom Control, maybe Developer Options... it's in there somewhere though.)
That may do it... or it may not. lol

Nope, I thought that might be the problem at first too, but it is't even recognized in fastboot, Windows states that a USB device has malfunctioned, so I'm fairly certain it's the port.
Basically I want to know if there is any way to revert to stock without the use of a USB cable.

Just checking, but have they tried using a different USB port on their computer?

It's most probably a faulty USB port, see http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23789
To fix it you need to replace the USB charging board, so you should probably advise your friend to try to return it. It should be a warranty case.

Hi guys, thanks for the responses, I have tried using different cables and computers, including my own (I have a galaxy nexus as well) and it all has the same problem. We haven't found a way to get adb to function at all so he's gonna try to send it away through the carrier (so he gets a loaner phone).
Do you think it will go through under warranty even though it's unlocked with a custom ROM?

It's a known hardware issue so it should surely be a warranty case even if unlocked and with a custom rom, if they don't accept Samsung has really become an ass.

Asses or not, it's clearly been said that unlocking the bootloader voids the warranty. I fail to see how that actually would matter on a phone where one simple command can unlock it.

You can try using chainfire's mobile odin. Or you can try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25191923
I haven't tested it out yet, but it should work.

And if nothing works theres a thread here about how to brick a Galaxy Nexus, and that should be enough

I would suggest buying a new cable and trying that. Seems a lot of users are encountering this lately. The wires that carry data fail, but the wires that carry power still function. It doesn't have to be a Samsung branded cable, but one specifically for charging/data for the SGH-T989. It happened to me both on this phone, and my Transformer. Both times it was solved by using a new cable.
Your local electronics store should carry what you need. Good luck!

I tried it. No help :/. I think it is the phone's usb port that makes this problem. Probably I'll send it to samsung company to have it fixed.
Before u diagnose the phone as the issue i would check and try plugging it to another pc besides the one that doesnt detect it because i have the same issue with my main pc. When i plug it it opens up as an unreadable drive, it wount open or anything, but when i plug it to my laptop it works perfect.
kind of wierd but it works. i also tried installing kies and didnt help at all. now it it still doesnt work than yea probably the phone.

Also remove sim, sd card, and battery for a bit then replace. Also, get the most "official" cable you can. I'm working with an old evo cable and an old g2 cable. Some of the car charging ones/generics won't play nice. Try blowing (light laughing allowed) into the port.

Ok here is what i did:
1-enable EHCI on your computer from device manage >> http://www.intel.com/technology/usb/ehcispec.htm
2-took a portable toothbrush with isoprop (swabbing alcohol)
3-took my phone to the gas station ...25c air and dried the crap out of it
4-wipe/reset my phone from fast boot menu (not android menu)
5-got an LG "B" data cable...
voila monsieur !!!! i dont know which was the silverbullet but i aint complainin.
However, it was still nice to know that Samsung is a no questions asked manufacturer.
Someone was having the same issues as mine in russia, and he said ICS 4.0 did it and is waaaaaaaaaaay better for this phone. Im gonna give this to a friend and WILL NOT touch these till ICS 4 officially comes out here. Tooo much hassle and ive got too much info riding on it (phone). <<personal opinion

HALP, USB port is borked

My computer can't see my phone via ADB or anything else, and the phone won't charge. I'm positive it's a USB port issues, as I have been able to connect to my phone before, flash ROMS, move files back and forth, etc. I've tried different cables and different USB ports. USB debugging is turned on.
I want to return the phone to stock before I try returning it. Is there a way I can do this without a USB port? Maybe use a stock nandroid or something? (even if I could do this last step, I'm not sure how I'd relock the bootloader)
you could use this to lock the bootloader https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwyLDEsIm5ldC5zZWd2MTEuYm9vdHVubG9ja2VyIl0. flash a stock rom that you could download from a web browser and you should be good

no problem
Post 3 of my guide has a link to return to stock and locked with no USB access.
If you want to do it without Mobile Odin, there is a (free) way. See here. I've set it up for maguro, but you can easily replace all the maguro images with the toro ones. Then use segv11's BootUnlocker app (linked earlier) to re-lock the bootloader.
Thanks guys, exactly the info I was looking for. I appreciate the speedy replies!
Also, there just seems to be a generalized hardware problem with the Galaxy Nexus' USB port, I myself sent my device in because of it, and they put in a new USB port which helped prevent the problem for a week and I was extremely frustrated when it came back, and of course XDA being the lifesaver Paradise, I learned that if you get a small object like a flat-head jewelry screwdriver and slide it under the tongue of the port and apply small amounts of upward pressure (But not too much, because if it breaks you could void your warranty) to the tongue. Apparently the Nexus' port shorts out when touching the bottom of the phone, I have been good for about a month with no problems. You could try this before warranty.

[Q] Nexus doesn't get power anymore when on

Hi guys,
Since yesterday my Gnex doesn't get power from the adapter anymore when it's turned on. Only if I shut it down, it will get power.
Also when I connect it to the computer, it says: "device is not recognized".

i don't know, your phone is dying?
those of us who have never experienced that particular behaviour, we need something more.
please provide more information; ac/usb charging or both? other charger/cable? running stock, stock+custom kernel, custom rom? list the apps you have installed. fastcharge y/n? if you turn it on after it begins to charge, does it keep charging? have you tried another battery? how do the pins/usb port on the device look: dirty, bent, any kind of damage?
Before thiis happened, I didnt change much things at my nexus. I use AndroidHD rom for quite a while now, and didnt install any new apps.
I tried several chargers but nothing is working. Only of its off, but even then it says its charging but thats not the case all the time.

reflash stock images if you want, relock bootloader, turn it in for warranty, if you checked usb port state.

I've looked at the post, re-locked the bootloader --> that worked.
Now I want to download the ODIN.tar files for de Odin Mobile app, but I can only find the .tar files voor Verizon models.. I however have a GSM model from a Dutch carrier.
Do you have a link for ODIN.tar file(s) for the GSM version of the GNex?

You're not on your own. I'm having the exact same problem with my Galaxy Nexus. since a couple of days.
Only way I can charge it is by turning the device off. Then while its rebooting plugging it in.
I also have the 3 dot connect docking station. Same problem with that way of charging... So I know it is not the USB thats faulty.
My device is rooted. with superuser permission. no special rom. only a different launcher,
never had any problems with it. and I did not change anything in my phone for 2 weeks.
I have no clue how to relock my bootloader without USB.
Casparovic i have a GSM model too. also from a Dutch carrier Vodafone.
Ill try Jubakuba his guide.
Well, I relocked the bootloader (without usb), but it's still not charging when turned on.
I can't figure out what it is. Also i can't send it to the carrier because it's rooted.
Can someone tell me how to go further?
I have the same issues, I just bought 3 spare batteries, and only 2 of them work on my Nexus. So basically I switch between the original battery and the extra battery I bought and charge them with wireless chargers. Very inconvenient, I hate samsungs absolute garbage quality, never again.... 6 years of a loyal HTC customer, guess this is what I get lol

Having the exact same problem. It won't charge when connected to the AC adapter as well as through USB. Computer doesn't always recognize it either.
It does charge however with my rocketfish car adapter and a BlackBerry ac adapter.
Not sure if this could related to the OS, currently running Cm10 v1.7. Or is it something else?
Sent from Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Devices:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Asus Transformer tf101
I have had the same problem running Jellybro and AOKP.
Only way to fix it for me was to go back to stock and wipe everything on the internal storage. Then unlock, root etc.. all the way back to whatever nightly I was running and put all my apps and data back on.
This has happened 3 times now in the past 2 months. I really panicked the first time!!
Also, sometimes I have had an issue with it showing that it was charging when nothing was plugged in! Same method to fix... oh well, the price for being a rom flash addict...
Mine randomly started working again. I've been on cm10 nightlies since they started, never changed the kernel. I also have 2 Hyperion 3800mah batteries and the stick battery. Everything charges like normal now.

No USB connection to computer - Not the usual driver issue

Hey all,
I picked up a used Nexus (VZW version) about a month ago and have been struggling with this issue. No matter what I've tried, I cannot get the phone to connect to any type of PC in MTP or PTP mode. I have been able to get it to connect in Fastboot mode on a PC, but that's about it.
I've tried NUMEROUS fixes after scouring the net for the past three weeks. I've tried on a Mac using Android Transfer, on an XP and Windows 7 PC using various drivers and toolkits, even the SDK, but nothing seems to work. I've used official Samsung drivers, naked drivers, wug's toolkit, another Nexus toolkit, pdanet, but none produced a different result. At one point I noticed that the pins on the USB terminal were bent and even went as far as replacing the USB port. I used factory Samsung cables and any other that I could get my hands on, but still no luck. It seems that the phone is not sending any type of signal for the computer to respond to. I get nothing popping up in Device Manager, not even an "unknown device" warning from Windows.
At this point I have to assume there is some sort of software issue (phone side) that is preventing the connection, but I don't know what. I thought I had a lead last week with changing something using the PhoneUtil settings, but I can't seem to find the right *, #, number combo to get into the settings.
Any ideas would be appreciated...I'm really not sure what my next step is.
Thanks in advance.
If fastboot devices lists your device when booted into the bootloader, I doubt this is a HW issue. Since you already tried so much, I can only write what I would do in your case:
1) get a clean install of Windows (XP or 7, doesn't matter). No restore point stuff, format C:\ and reinstall using the DVD.
2) do NOT install any drivers yet
3) open device manager
4) connect your GNEX and watch for changes
If you do see an unknown device now, update its driver using the naked driver.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm gonna give that a shot in the morning and I'll report back.
The only other possibility that I could come up with was firmware. But I'm guessing that it since I tried stock 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 that it rules that out.

Unexpected. Does your phone react when you connect it to the PC (starts charging, mentions 'connected as a media device')?
Yeah, I know. I'm baffled. No, doesn't show that it is charging, unless I turn it off completely. And no, doesn't say anything about being connected to the computer.

It could be worth a try to inspect your USB port. Use a flashlight to see if something is bent or damaged inside.
If you are talking about the one on the phone, I replaced it about 2 weeks ago with a brand new one.

You can either replace the USB port which isnot expensive actually. hardly 2-4 dollars on Ebay.
There are Rooting methods that work without using cables like STUMP root and TowelRoot but before that, are you developer unlocked?

Idk how I feel about soldering on that small of a device. Anyway I think I am locked. I know for sure I never did fastboot OEM unlock (that's what I did on my nexus 4). Or if you mean enabled USB debugging then yes.

Although there are many guides how to repair usb port on your nexus, how about you take assistance from a technician or some mobile shop to replace it for you? I think it'd be worth it if done within 20$ or you can eBay the port and ask a technician to help you (might cost even less).
With a locked boot loader, I'm afraid customs roms/recovery wouldn't be possible and slow qi charge.
What do you reckon?
