My upgrade is in october, but I'm fairly certain I could convince sprint to cut me some slack. Basically, for the past year or so I've used CM7 on my Evo. I like the full customization available in a stock rom. I'm sure CM9 will be available for both of the phones I'm considering at some point, but that will kill the sense features like the amazing new camera which I feel like I need (most of my photos are in doors in low light situations). The evo seems to have better specs over all, bigger screen, off screen buttons (positive), better screen, sexier more resilient built, and I could always use a custom launcher to get my customization on.
The main thing I think I'm missing with both phones are the quick widgets from CM7 - where you pull down the notification bar and there are some quick settings buttons. I really, really like and feel like I need that. Do either phones have that built in? I know the evo will last me longer and be the same price with upgrade. Any tips? Thanks.
The galaxy nexus has had cm9 for a long time. And most roms right now all have the toggles in the notification bar. So your good on that.

Hardware navigation buttons are not a positive. Have you seem the major ****-up of a job HTC did with em? A huge bar comes up with the menu key. Ya, HTC, you ****ed up.
Trust me. You don't want to be using a phone on an OS built to have on-screen buttons and doesn't have them. Get the Galaxy Nexus over the HTC or get the GSIII if you really need a good camera.

Well actually, from all the reviews I've seen lately of the One X and S it isn't needed. The S4 is apparently great on battery and some reviewers are even getting 2 days out of it. I was honestly surprised.

Isn't it the exact opposite? Reading the one x forums here looks like people have overwhelmingly bad battery life. 2.5-3 hours screen time on a good day. Meanwhile the nexus gets 4.5 hours pretty easily.

They should let you upgrade early because of the contract buyout thing.
Maybe the GSM gnex gets 4.5 but my late version gets barely over 3 on the extended battery with 3g on and on wifi all day. This is on aokp with glados kernal and display at 20%

Only benefit of waiting is that roms will all be here and wont have bugs by the time may 18th comes

You don't necessarily need a custom ROM, you can also just download the free app Widgetsoid from the market. Gives you a totally customizable notification toolbar. I do think you have to be rooted though, not sure on that. I'm running rooted stock ROM and have the notification toolbar with the settings I want.
no problem rooting it, though i read it has a locked bootloader, which kind of blew my mind

So I have the original vibrant and I was wondering should I upgrade to the SII for free today or pay for an SIII next week? Any input from the people that have been using it is appreciated! I just don't know if the SIII is worth paying for if I can get the SII for free... Thanks!!!

S3 of course . I m going to switch someday lol

Ya know, I was a vibrant user, recently upgraded to the t989 and I love it (of course). If you look at the specs on the s3 you're not going to see a huge boost in performance. Slightly different aestethic design to it, a few features that, while pretty cool, are already being provided as mods for the s2, thanks to the brilliant devs here xda.
Another thing to look at is the fact that the s2 has been on the market long enough that its bugs have been worked out and there are endless options for modification.
Last but not least, tmo is offering the s2 for free? Wish we had known that was coming a couple months ago..
If it were my wallet, I'd go with the s2 and use the money on a new BBQ. Good luck with your decision and I hope you enjoy whichever device you go with.

Yes t mobile is having a sale this weekend only with a mail in rebate. I checked it out on the website and called customer service and they confirmed. I might get the s2 and I can always return it next week if I change my mind. Thanks for the help!

Really I just want something faster and 4g and a better camera. What's your opinions on how the s2 performs in these categories?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
s3 is a great phone and you should upgrade if you're on the vibrant. I could not justify upgrading from an s2 to an s3 this seems like just an incremental upgrade imo. But from the vibrant the s3 will be a huge improvement.
Honestly the one S if anything seems like the most exciting device(I know I will get flamed). If you can get around not having an SD card(I cant right now but I can see myself giving it up in the future.) I would go with that.
Metal, honestly, the s2 really meets your needs as far as what you're looking for, camera is crystal clear, even with flash in poor lighting. The phone is super responsive, never lags for me and has 4g. Certainly not trying to talk you out of the s3 tho, just saying my experience with the s2 has been very positive.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The specs of the SII vs SIII aren't too far off. They'll both perform very well (with the slight improvements going to the SIII of course). The one area that is tempting/makes me jealous about the SIII is the screen resolution. That sucker is very crisp, and makes our screen seem rather low-res.
However, having said that the SII sounds like it will meet your needs. It has a fantastic camera, and very high speeds. I'm also not sure if the SIII supports full 42mb/s like the SII does (because of the talk of a unified model), so it may be slower but if someone has more knowledge perhaps they can correct me.
When it comes down to it, it depends if you think it's worth the $200 difference. For me, I'd probably take an SII and call it a day.

I am not going for s3. May be i will go for next nexus or note 2 when they availble.
There is nothing new in sgs3 I mean this time Samsung did not introduced any thing first time. Many companies already released their phones with HD screen and with quad core processor.
I am expecting something unseen from Samsung but this time they did not.

The thing about this is ... if u get an s2 or s3 are u gonna run it stock... answer is probably not so next question is do u like touchwiz enough to keep it... reason for asking is that if u plan on running cm9, or aokp then the difference between the two is minimal I'd say the s3 obviously is gonna outperform the s2 but in day to day use on cm9 and aokp I'd say u wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.

I couldn't agree more. Of course the S3 is faster, but I honestly can't think of applications or situations in which the SII fails me. Sure maybe it will be 2ms faster to load the Homescreen, but we're not talking about noticeable differences. Until software catches up and creates more demanding apps (or perhaps they're out and I just don't want to use them yet), there will not be much differentiation.
I don't see the point of performing an upgrade simply for upgrade's sake. I have a desktop that's aged quite well. The processor is nearly 5.5 years old, and the graphics cards are 4 years old. There are computers that can run laps around mine, but in the end it doesn't matter because all of the programs and games I play run nearly flawlessly at max or near max settings. Sorry if that's OT, but it's the same concept.

Right, I think the question is will it get the full 42mb/s.
I see conflicting information regarding what type of 4g speeds this thing will get (I mean HSPA+ 21 or 42mb/s). Some sites say there will be a T-Mo version, and it may have the fastest quadcore while other carriers get slower ones, and then others say the phone will be unified.
Does anyone have a recent trustworthy link regarding this issue?
The s2 is great. I'd stock with it if I didn't have an upgrade available. But since I do, I'm getting the gs3. The variety of cases alone makes it better for me as I like to use multiple cases and swap them frequently.

Why not wait until the upgrade means more to you? It's not like you lose the upgrade, and it takes 2 additional years to get another.
Just moved to t mobile and have a one s. Awesome phone, with spotty reception., which is the reason for wanting to exchange. Can't exchange for sgs3 due to backorders and 14 day exchange. Can go to sgs2 but is it worth the little downgrade?
I love mine. The device is rock solid and the multitude of custom ROMS, GB and ICS, should give you enough variety to find what makes you happy.

Don't do it because its going to take a while for us to get the new software (Jellybean). I'm going to give you a little advice that I learn the hard way. Only buy Google made phones like galaxy nexus. Never buy other parties like Samsung and HTC cause they never update phone and there's not a lot of development. For android only get Google specific manufacturer phone . I can't stress that enough

Reception is a tough one as it depends on so many factors. I live just a few miles from the nearest TMO tower and my job is only 15 miles away so I always have great reception. I'm currently running the Whitehawkx AOKP ROM and have no issues with audio, camera, GPS or battery. Audio is crystal clear on calls and through apps such as Pandora, HBOGo, etc. The camera is what it is, 8mp is capable of quite a bit and if you get a solid HDR app such as HDR Camer+ by Almalence, you'll really get to see the hardware used to its potential.
I don't use maps much so I can't comment a whole lot on GPS other than to say the few times I have needed it, it has worked flawlessly. The battery is of course dependent upon far too many factors that all come from personal usage tendencies but I can say from my experience I get between 15 and 20 hours of battery a day on a full charge.
I'd suggest just checking the phone out in store if possible to get a better feel of what you'd be getting. Yeah, the OS updates are few and far between, and could very well be over at this point, but with all the custom ROM choices and the abilities of the Devs here, I wouldn't be shocked to see more custom choices as we go along.

There isn't a bright future for this phone. Most of the devs are moving away for greater phones. Our aokp dev doesn't have this phone anymore so it's not looking too good for aokp jellybean. I'd figure out a way for an s3 or wait for the nexus to come back (hopefully).
But if you must then this is a good phone with good Rom options at this point in time. Just don't be too hopeful about the future.

If your still in your 14 days why don't u return the one s and cancel the service. Go buy a cheap prepaid phone get on T-Mobile prepaid or another prepaid service. Then when the gs3 becomes available resign up for service thru T-Mobile.

If you're looking for a really good phone but don't want to spend $600.00 then the S2 is for you IMO! I've enjoyed my S2 since I first bought it. I don't know how big you are on rooting, ROMs, and the like, but even if you don't root this phone is great! The only thing that might turn you off is the larger than average screen (the Galaxy S3 is even bigger, but thinner), in that case I would go with a Blaze.

probably the international S3
I downgraded from an S3 to a GNexus and let me tell you, that phone is terrible. Its too big and yet it feels like cardboard ready to break at any second. The build quality was **** and the volume buttons felt like they would pop out any second. On top of that the Touchwiz that comes with is on par with low-budget LG phones. I mean the thing wouldn't stop trying to upload my photos to G+ even after i told it 50 times to stop. You can't get rid of the "Wi-Fi available" bull**** and the whole top of notification bar is ful of other retarded **** that I never used, you literally have like 1/2 of the notifications filled with useless crap. The keyboard is also modified to **** it comes with swype which has autocorrect but if you get tired of swype and go back to normal keyboard it suddenly loses its auto-correct. Overall I hated the phone and i'm glad I got the GNexus.
I feel like they may be doing this to try and get rid of nexus updates altogether by offering s3 they can just say Samsung is your problem with the nexus one it hits aosp it really shouldn't take much time to get to the end user I think Verizon is tired of supporting this phone.

I think your biggest problem is Sprint, not the phones you have
I would have told the CSR that I'll take a phone I can unlock and do whatever I want with over one that they locked down. Tell them to call back when they're offering the developer edition, which will likely never actually see the light of day.
Have you guys tried Jellybean? Do it and then tell me you hate the Nexus...you won't. It's buttery smooth with Franco's kernel and battery life is great. I had an Epic Touch and it was a great phone, but you can't give those things away...they made millions of them and that $99 bogo special doesn't help resale. I put $100 with mine and traded for a 4s and sold it for $400. People are having problems getting $200 for the Epic. Traded another 4s for an Evo lte then for my Nexus. Lte is a good phone but feels like its gonna break in half, plus I had a 1.15 hboot. Nexus' camera isn't the greatest, but it's a phone camera remember...I would however trade my Nexus for an S3

well if i get the option to change my nex for an S3 id go for it, and flash cm10 (i know you guys are gonna say cm10 is not the same on the nex than on any other phone) but id jus enjoy the slighly better hardware for a bit until the next nexus(es) come out in november, then id be back in the nexus line again
If this is true its not a good sign. If they decide not to carry the next nexus I will likely be moving on. Honestly I would have told them no. To me the s3 is not really much of an upgrade. The only advantage is the processor and camera.

yet you're here reading the forums... Just to tell us about how bad it is apparently.
Right now im on the amaze 4g... and i have to say.... the development for that phone is horrible. :/ when it was on gingerbread it wasnt all that good either. now there is ics and dev is severely crippled. the specs are nice but the dev part is lacking.
now i was thinking if i could buy this from the play store for 349. is it worth it? i dont know. i know you guys will prlly say yes. but theres a upcoming nexus this fall if im not mistaking. should i wait or tell google to shutup and take my money?!
im thinking about getting this or another HTC device... but the problem is that HTC doesnt release its kernel source right away (like it did with the amaze). im not sure if thats true with their other devices like htc one S or one X. can anyone clue me in? So if jellybean drops on the one S and one X will there be another problem with the kernal source being released? i like their build quality.
Im only going to buy nexus devices in the future fuhhhhhh. but the question is should i wait or get this one?
help me out guys?
I came from the amaze forums as well, and the galaxy nexus absolutely destroys the amaze in every way except for maybe build quality but there is so much more pros than cons it's unbelievable. Alright here is what I recommend. Keep your amaze. Buy a Nexus 7. & wait for the Next Nexus.
We are just 2-3 month away and that N7 will be able to keep u happy long enough.
What do u think???
--------------------------------------------------
If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
I would take the Nexus over the Amaze for the screen alone, lest we forget then other specs. If I were you I would sell your amaze and buy the nexus. You should break even on that. Then see what comes in a couple of months. New Nexus? HTC One X+? TMO may have some nice devices coming down the pipe.

This may sound silly, but I'm just going to tell you anyway. Getting the galaxy nexus was like having a huge weight removed off my shoulders. I feel so relieved from it.
I bought it for 380. From somebody off craigslist, but it came with an extra housing and 3 sgp cases.
The next nexus won't be 350, so consider that.
And honestly the camera on the amaze destroys the camera on the galaxy nexus, the pictures taken with my galaxy nexus are good overall but not mind blowing like the amaze. The camera isn't horrible. Just good enough to not be a deal breaker.

YUH iwas thinking of selling my amaze for this phone. i got it day one when it was released.
i was thinking of holding out on till HTC makes the next nexus device or the one x+ comes out. the problem with the one x+ is what if the development is as stale as the amaze :/

Well it all depends if you like sense, stock jelly bean is literally lightning fast and responsive. Even faster than my friends evo 4Glte. This "old" phone is nothing to be reckoned with . And honestly, you're telling me you can put a price on timely updates directly by google? Lol

lol im not putting a price on it. i would love to have the best software when it comes out not months and god forbid years later
im worried google might treat the galaxy nexus like the nexus one and leave it behind when the next version of android comes around
jellybean could be its last update

I doubt it man. The nexus s is getting jellybean. This phone is good for about two more updates. I'm guessing, that's two years! Lol

The Nexus will be getting updates for the next 1-3 years from now.
If Google discontinues it & for some reason have not upgraded, you can root it and get the latest OTA through CM or something.
Also the N7 isn't really a tablet IMO. It's small(in a good way) & extremely portable. Something most tablet can't brag about.

nexus 7 is nice but not enough for me to buy it if the galaxy nexus also has jb and a hybrid mode.
for the next 2-3 years? i hope so!
It's worth it. In fact i just bought it couple days ago. It's an unlocked international gsm for only $360. Half years ago it was $600, so it's cheap now.
What i like about it is it's a pure google experience and keep getting major updates unlike other 3rd party handset.
The bad thing about this is the screen. I could see a greent tint on the left side of my screen i ln low brightness, and people said it's normal with amoled. Urghh.

From my understanding this phone still has a great amount of life left. I'm getting a nexus on Tuesday even though there is no SD slot I'm confident I won't need it even though j have about 10gbs of music.
So if your torn between phones I'd say get the Nexus/DInc4g/Sgs3. If your into rooting and feeling free.. then go with the nexus.

I'm a tablet user who wants a smaller phone , I want to revert back to using normal sized phone. So I was thinking of getting the nexus but I read that it's batt life is horrible
Any suggestions? I'm using tab plus 7.0 and I have no complaints whatsoever with it, in fact I think my tab is even faster than s3 if you wouldn't base it on benchmarks.
Pros and cons of nexus for you?

I wouldn't describe the battery life as "terrible" - it all depends how much you use the screen each day. On average, 50% of my daily battery consumption is the screen. The more you use it, the less life you will get from it.
I use mine a few hours each day (I would say I'm a moderately heavy user), and get a full day out of it with a slightly larger, 2000mAh genuine battery, which cost $38 on eBay. The genine battery has the NFC antenna built in, whereas the non-genuine batteries do not.
The ability to replace the stock 1750mAh battery with a range of after market ones means you can tailor the physical size of your phone to your usage habits. Try doing that with a One X.
If you want, you can buy a 3800mAh (non-genuine) battery for about $20 on eBay. For that sort of money you can't really go wrong...
Pro is the huge choise of custom ROMs that you can run on the phone. There is one for just about every sort of user.
Enjoy!!!
Well we've got a little over a month to go before we hit that magical 18 month mark and the support cycle for our beloved nexii ends. Not that that matters a whole lot, but its a milestone nonetheless. Despite the ongoing battery struggles and some awful early (and sometimes reappearing) signal issues, I have to say that I've loved this phone, and at the end of the day it really did meet most most of my expectations. It can still handle pretty much everything you can throw at it, even at 18 months old, and that's not something you can say about a lot phones at this point in their life cycles. I did hate it while we were waiting for the first official radio update and 4.04, and even then I never really stopped thinking about selling it. But from the first JB update and since, I've been a happy camper and even turned down a family member's offer to buy me a full price Note 2 or DNA.
Interested to hear what other launch day or close-to-launch day purchasers would say about if and how it has lived up to their expectations.

I have had my nexus since December 2011, not exactly launch day but that was the soonest I could get my hands on it in Canada. My experience in owning this device has been interesting. In the end I have realized what features I value more then others based on the nexus' downfalls. Some of these include radio strength, battery life, camera quality and of course software is still vital to me.
The 18 months is coming quickly upon us and our Galaxy nexus is probably only going to get one more official update and to be honest I'm fine with it, as this will give me extra reason to upgrade.

Well I've had my nexus for about 8 months or so now. I did not upgrade when it first came out and stuck with the nexus s for a bit.
Then got the note 1 for a while. Then finally came over late last year cause I got tired of waiting on Samsung to release jellybean for the note 1.
Anyway... I can easily say this has been the best experience I've had with any handset. Never been happier.
Jellybean solved a lot of problems with the fluidity and speed of the already excellent android experience.
The handset itself is still a beauty too. I never get tired of those sexy curves and all clean black front end with no buttons!
The handset still runs well with no big issues. Games and apps load in an almost instant. Blazing fast still. I will keep it for a good while I think.
Will try and wait till the fall at least. See what the next nexus brings. Or that Motorola x phone.
The only thing I would change about the galaxy nexus would be more ram. It's the only small issue I have very rarely. Especially when using chrome with a few tabs open. It eats a lot of ram at times.
But all in all... This has been and still is an excellent handset. Love it

I've had mine since launch day on Verizon, and I stuck with it after the fiasco of the launch date that was delayed and delayed. I wanted the nexus experience and I have enjoyed it for the most part, but Verizon has ruined some of the experience with their late updates and such. I will be keeping this phone as long as I can since I am grandfathered into the unlimited data so I don't want to upgrade. When it comes time to get a new phone, I hope I have the option to buy a nexus.

Did google said anything about that 18 month something? I think you're all being paranoid. Go ahead and flash something coz it looks like y'all need your medication.
I thought support ends after 2 years?
I/O is coming.
And I thought support was for 2 major Android versions. Like the Nexus S.

I bought my Gnex used and I've had it about 9 months. I love the pure Google experience and it helped me survive to the end of my contract with VZW. I'm waiting to see if Google has something up their sleeve at I/O for a new Nexus phone. I'll probably go to the Nexus 4 or whatever they announce then and free myself from carrier crap. Though maybe I'll wait until my Gnex craps out first and buy a Nexus 10 to replace my aging Iconia A500. Anyway, I'm firm in the Nexus camp!
Going by past history, each nexus device is roughly supported for around 2 years, which means we might stop getting official updates at around october..

I am on my second Contract with verizon...my first 2 year contract had the OG droid, Droid X and HTC thunderbolt in there. this is the only phone i have had on the current contract. i Do have urges to get a used S3 and throw an AOSP ROM on it, but i still think i would miss my Nexus.
all of my phones, i have tried everything in my power to make it as close to a nexus device as possible....and now that i have a nexus device, i dont have to worry about it. it is always up to date, it is super smooth, i haven't run into any issues, the Community is EXACTLY what i wanted, and the phone is even more than what i wanted. a phone that is still smooth and fast 15 months after i bought it, i am simply amazed.
and this phone gets more and more exciting come these google events, because i know i will have what they announce later that day or the following one.
I've had this phone for over a year which is an eternity for me. I still enjoy it so I'm having trouble convincing myself to retire it which is good thing. Sure there's now faster phones with bigger screens and better hardware but this thing still holds its own.
My only hope now is that I accidentally break it to give me reason to replace it. Maybe then my wife will understand.

Oh man! This is exactly how I feel. I'm tempted to buy the N4, but I feel guilty because my gnex still works perfectly. Also if I pull the trigger and buy the N4, I'm going to regret the decision by the end of this year when the next Nexus comes out.
I might just get drunk one day and make the purchase and blame alcohol for the decision!

Exactly my thoughts too! If it works, why bother replacing it? I'm getting a Nexus tablet to satisfy that buying urge. I'll probably hold out until the Nextsus before I doing any phone upgrading.
