I've scratched the screen - HTC One X

How, I have no bloody idea. Needless to say, I am pretty hacked off.
Its a fine hairline scratch smack bang in the middle of the phone.
am I the only unlucky one to have scratched the screen? I've kept it in a case without a screen protector, but I'll have to invest in one now!!!!! arrghhhhh
Edit: I've tried to capture the scratch, but its very difficult, here is an attempt attached!

No you are not alone. i got the same somehow. First time ever on any phone. right in the middle of the screen.

It is not quite visible on the pic.
Glass only gets scratched by materials which are harder than glass. Keys, knifes, etc don't usually have the hardness to scratch glass (hence the uselessness of scratch tests in my opinion).
Sand however is the most common culprit (as it is all around us). You might have had some in your pocket and due to some kind of leg movement (ie sitting down) enough pressure and friction was applied to scratch the glass.
I currently am struggling to find a decent fitting screen protector, the htc screen protector and the rock screen protector (which came as a gift with a brilliant case I am writing a review about).
I haven't really heard of any decent "film" protectors. The skin protectors (zagg and skinomi) are not an option for me (I have to admit I have only tried zagg for numerous devices, and haven't tried skinomi yet. however I am certain they feel exactly the same to zagg) as they feel tacky and put too much grip on the screen. And that I detest.

Otter box ftw?
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away

+1. One can only notice it with some light angles, but it's pretty long. Don't know how it happened.

I've just ordered a Zagg full body protector. I'm not taking the risk again.

Mine had a very tiny scratch (i think from when really drunk lol), altho I've had 2 replacements since anyways for flicker and dead pixels.
I can't stand screen protectors, they always make the screen look dirty (no I didn't get dirt stuck behind it) they just look horrible , the otterbox one the same thing, so I ended up taking off that screen protector and using the case without it (on dhd) , main thing tbh, make sure your pockets are clean, and always make sure the screen is as well before putting in the pocket

Grrrr, i've managed to scratch mine as well after having a credit card in the same pocket. I'll never put it in a pocket with anything again, it can't be trusted not to scratch.
I've never managed to scratch a phone in my life. (All HTC's since they started making phones.)

got a scatch on mine somehow too, no clue how it happened but i never put it in the same pocket as anything else. i wanted to cry

I scratched mine as well, since it was after I had just been sent a replacement I said it can back with a scratch and got a replacement that I'm getting today. Mine got scratched my my iPod touches screen which was cracked. Best thing to get is a pouch when putting it into your pocket

Screen Quality on HTC Desire?

does anybody know, quality of HTC Desire screen? does it scratch resistant the same as on iPhone 3GS or better? or worse?
Please tell more info about it.

AFAIK it scratches quite easily. I remember some Desire owners complaining about this, even from just having it in your pocket with your car keys. A screen protector is a must.
The screen is glass. I have had it for 2 months now and not a single scratch, not using any screen protector. I would say screen quality is very good, as god as any other phone (including the iPhone).
P.S. putting ANY phone in a pocket together with keys will scratch the screen. That is just stupid.
Yeah modern phones have reenforced polycarbonate, or Glass. either way very hard to scratch. yeah you'll probably pick up some reflective superfisal scratches, but you won't see these. i've got one, but I can't find it now.
point being, unless your a plank and drop it on gravel driveway or put it in your pocket with screws you'll be fine.
Sure a screen protector is a good idea, but not essential, tbh I couldn't get on with invisishield ones, and i spent £35 trying, so until next month i'm going commando lol.

I don't bother with a screen protector either - I'm just careful to put my phone in a pocket which doesn't have loose change or keys in it.
Regards,
Dave
Ditto. Gone commando since April. No scratches at all.
If you're going to put it in your pocket, make sure there's nothing else in there that can possibly scratch it. And have the screen side facing you. So if some idiot bumps you, the soft back side will absorb the impact.
Well, this is just my personal opinion. Even though the Desire has a glass composite screen, I don't want to take the chance of accidently scratching the screen having paid so much for the Desire.
I think it is a sensible option to buy a suitable cheap screen protector that will not effect the sensitivity of the screen and still allow the screen to be functional. I currently keep my phone in a Gel Case with a screen protector applied.
The screen is very good, suitably rugged for a smartphone IMHO. I've a screen protector and a case here, but I rarely use them. I've dropped it twice outside on a stoned pavement from 5ft high (obviously unintentionally, once it literally flew 10m away at high speed) and twice inside on the kitchen tiles. Slept on it twice accidentally, waking up and finding it directly beneath me. Thankfully, not a single faint mark, scratch, chip or dent anywhere yet. Unlike what resulted with my last N97.

I'd say it's quite a tough screen / phone all together.
I've dropped it a few times (dumbass thing to do I know) - but it's been on a softish surface, no damage.
I also keep it in the cover that came with my G1 when I first got that. It saves the phone from possibly getting scratched, or damaged. Although if it's full glass, I think it's difficult to scratch the screen anyhow!
Does anyone know if it is the same glass as the nexus one? There is a guy on youtube who took key and all sorts to that screen and it came out ok!

I have no scratch at all and have had it since Nov, but i make sure the pocket i use for my cell is empty of everything else. I do not use a case since it scratches the frame of the phone. I very often use my glasses cloth to clean thr screen the worse i have had is a real deep smudge that stayed for like 3 days but it just faded the more i wiped.

No scratches at all on an unprotected and heavily used 8-month old Epic. I'm so confident in the screen that I chose to keep my new one unprotected as well.
The feel of screen protectors sucks enough to offset the benefits for me and my use.
Best advice to not scratch your phone is to never use your shirt (even the inside) to clean your screen. EVEN if your shirt appears clean. The screen is not scratch proof against many types of materials which gather as tiny dust particles such as granite and others. Use a cheap protector and you'll be thankful.

The epic screen is definitely not scratch proof!! Screen protector is good, but invisishield is the way to go
i dont have a scratch on mine and i have this phone since release day. I guess it depends on the owner.
dropped my phone 5x from around 3ft, over the last 5 months. I have only one small scratch on my screen that i think my belt buckle did.
i took a swiss army knife to an epic before and it didnt leave a scratch.
gorilla glass IS scratch resistant. I dont think there exist a screen that is scratch PROOF.
for a quick test take a sharp key and try to scratch an epic and a phone w/o gorilla glass. see what one has more dmg to it.
I've had mine for a couple of months with no scratching. I suspect I've just been very lucky. I left it on the roof of my Jeep while loading furniture once. Remembered it when I saw it fly off in to traffic behind me. I'd driven about 5 miles and was doing 75mph when it went airborn. After the first bounce it came out of it's leather case. When I ran back down the highway and picked it up the case, phone, phone back and battery were scattered around. The screen still looks like new. The silver on the corners of the phone is worn away and I have a hole in the leather case. I think the high speed of the air kept the screen facing off to the side so only the phone corners hit the pavement. That was a couple of weeks ago. Everything is still working fine. I don't know how much I should attribute to luck and how much to good construction.
I go on ebay and buy like 5 for 2 bucks free shiping and the screen looks clear

Hopefully I haven't just jinxed myself.
No you don't need a screen protector, they do nothing other than getting scratch, smudge and decrease the clarity of your screen. Another problem is the touch feeling of touching the glass.
For any discussion about scratches >> IT DOES NOT HAPPENS !!!
The Gorilla glass 2 on the galaxy s3 is probably the best glass in the market, doesn't scratch or easily breaks. Though the problem is the frame which scratch on drop.
I used my galaxy s3 for 3 weeks, got my screen protector on for the first 4 days and just took it off, it's just degrading my phone. I current own an iphone 4, new ipad, iphone 4s and i know they all scratches at some point, but not this galaxy s3.

This. I was scared of not using protection with this expensive phone (even though I had a Droid X for over two years without a single scratch).
I bought a Zagg HD and thought it was great....for the first couple of days. Then I realized I hate the feeling, scratched easier than normal glass! and turned a weird yellow color after a month. So I recently ditched it.
WOW, almost forgot how much more beautiful this screen is naked!
You guys have been sold by advertising.
The glass in our phone sucks. Why do you think there are so many threads about diy repair in these Forums?

There have been a lot of videos with people using razor blades and forks to try and scratch the screen and it looks really awesome. I have had Gorilla Glass screens in the past that had the same things done to them and somehow they got scratched when I used them. I don't know how it happens (maybe diamond wielding gremlins sneak into my pockets and do their evil deed when I am not looking), but it happens.
I am a 'better safe than sorry' kind of guy. I know that if I got a scratch on my screen it would bug me until I bought a new phone so I am putting on a screen protector. I have tried the Zagg on other phones (and on my iPad) and I hate the feel of it. To be honest, I have found that the cheap screen protectors work very well and are quite clear. If/when they scratch.... Put on another one and it looks new again. At around a buck each it's no big deal.
Actually... My HTC Sensation and my Samsung - whatever the first Galaxy was on Tmobile - still have the original cheap screen protectors on them so one dollar protected them for as long as I used them.
Put me down for "use a screen protector" (but not an expensive one).
I had my phone for about a week without a screen protector and it looked gorgeous. Not a single scratch. I had a Motorola Photon before for 8 months and it also has gorilla glass. I can tell you, the glass does stand well, but it showed some small scratches after that long (and I'm not rough).
After my first week owning the phone, I had it in my pocket while sitting down and it slipped out onto the tile below. Screen shattered. I don't have insurance so I had to spend $200 for my own screen to replace it. It sucked.
A screen protector seems like a useless product, and the good ones (invisible ones) are expensive, but trust me, its a lot cheaper than a new screen. Also invest in a good case. My bezel has a scuff from the fall.
Ive never used a screen protector, and luckily I haven't scratched my screen either. Have been using N7000 since first week it was released in Sweden. Have only dropped it twice, once from pocket height on concrete floor, once from nightstand table.. both times face down of course, haha. Except from that I'm careful with my Note, only put it in a pocket where there is nothing else, and face up when I leave it on for example a table. I've never seen a screen protector I would like to use myself, so I'm careful with my phone instead and if I scratch the screen I guess I'll have to replace it or buy a Note 2. But rather that than having screen protector on in my opinion

Hi, guy doesn't it feel better without a rubber on? Same thing you take a risk but it feels better. :highfive:
I'd have to say use a screen protector. It's the first thing I purchase when getting a new handset
Sony Ericsson P800, numerous XDA variants, a HD2 and now my S3 all have them, and as yet all my screens are immaculate
If you've got a $35 handset then treat it like one, if you've got a $500 handset then at least respect it a little
I even have accidental protection with no deductible through best buy and still have a case and protector lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Id say if you have insurance on the phone, then I wouldnt use one. I had the similar scenario as you; had a screen protector for ~1 month and removed it and realized how beautiful the screen was, haha.

Is there actually a point for screen protectors?

I let my epic 4g bounce around in my pocket for 2+ years without a scratch, and my GS3 has been doing the same. Since I'm not an idiot, I don't keep my keys in the same pocket as my phone, so why would I ever need a screen protector?

Actually, yes a screen protector would benefit you. Even if you have gorilla glass, sand is STILL stronger and will scratch your screen. I keep nothing in my right pocket but my phone and I have a few micro scratch lines. It truly does suck to rely on screen protectors but at the end of the day, another layer of armor above your screen is never a bad thing. You can't put a price on that. Spending the few extra bucks on an invisishield to keep your phones resale value is priceless.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
Well... i think in order for sand to scratch your phone should you have a few grains in your pocket, I believe that would require you either being in an area where sand is a part of the environment, or where you work with sand....

It really depends on how you like to see your screen - scratch free or full of scratches. Cause one thing I guarantee you: it will scratch!
See, Gorilla Glass 2 is a sh#t when compared with GG1. For instance, I had my TF101 for almost a year, no screen protector, and I guess I could chop onions in there without having scratches. On the other hand, I have my S3 for nearly a month and I can spot some scratches. Well I guess in part they're my fault, I shouldn't had drunk in New Years's Eve as it would save my S3 a fall. However, apart from that I had always been very carefull, even more as I was waiting from my screen protector and case to arrive (I also got some "bruises" on the back case, true story! Don't drink unless you have an obex case or something like that, seriously... ).
The point is. For more carefull you can be accidents always happen, you can't avoid them. So, the only way to preserve your smarthphone would be to have a nice screen protector and a tight case. In my opinion, unless you're thinking in getting drunk, go to the beach, go camping, etc. you won't need an obex or a griffin, a diztronic or a zoogue would do the job.
Might as well slop Vaseline on your screen if you're going to put a screen protector on it.
Seriously, put your protected phone next to a nonprotected one with the screen on and tell me it's worth it.
$5 warranty exchange through tmobile fixes any scratches in a heartbeat... and its cheaper than buying a screen protector. Just sayin

Why do people get so pissed off about stuff like this? If you don't like them don't use them, but don't give others **** for using one. As for the difference in screen quality, you clearly haven't used very available screen protector, have you? My JustLikeGlass is crystal clear, I can't see or feel a difference. I have actually put two on so was able to compare back to back.
Personally I don't like screen protectors, but I've noticed that the cheap ones off ebay gives much better feeling than Copter or likewise.
I think screen protectors are still worth it. Even though the gorilla glass is suppose to be scratch resistant, I still see people with many scratches on their screens.

I see no point in screen protectors because when u have it on it looks like its full of scratches until u replace it and the screen protectors scratch more easy. Gorilla glass doesn't get scratched easily by keys just watchout for sand but that scratches pretty much everything

I personally hate screen protectors. I never used one on my S2 but towards the last month I had it before I got the S3, I got this pretty small scratch on it and every time I looked at it it pissed me off. Almost nobody I showed it to was able to notice it, but since I knew are it was I always noticed it. Now I have one in my Susie day 1 (2 months now) and I'm sick of it. I'm debating on taking it off. I can notice a difference.

Anyone got scratches on their screen WITHOUT protector?

Hey guys.
I bought around 4-5 cases for my HTC one so far. but in the end, NOTHING beats the HTC one naked in your hand, so i bought an invisibleshield protector for it .
But i dont like the screen protector. so im wondering, people using the phone with no screen protector, have you got any scratches on it? or does the Gorilla glass really work?
It works to a certain extent. Gorilla Glass is rated about 5-6H hardness. That will save you from most metals. Sand/stones will definitely scratch the glass as they can contain Quartz, which is 7H. Glas.t is rated for 8-9H so even those won't scratch it.
No scratches on mine so far. Like the poster above said, just watch out for certain sand/minerals cause they are hard enough to scratch the screen.
My last phone had GG as well, dont remember if it was 1 or 2, but it had a bunch of tiny scratches in one spot, turns out it was my earring (which is made of quartz) scratching it every time i used it.
So now I only answer my phone with my right hand lol, since my left ear is pierced.
I got mine about a month ago, and I still didnt get a screen protector..
no scratches yet..

Actually, keys cant scratch your screen. The metals they're made of are too soft compared to GG.
Its sand and rocks that will scratch up your phone if they ever find a way into your pockets. in other words.. better be careful at the beach.
They get into your pocket anyway, even some particals of dirt on flooring at hard enough to cause scratches. When I get my one ill probably get the glas screen protectors and take off after a month or 2

I'm not too sure as to how I got my scratches either but I do have two on the screen. I usually keep my phone in it's own pocket or at most it would be with my car key fob which shouldn't scratch it.. But otherwise I think it's just from normal use, maybe some sand or something. Thinking about jumping on the Glas.tr protector though.
It might well be alright without a protector; the glass is certainly quite resilient, and what others say is quite true-- short of sand, quartz, and other hard minerals, you're usually good to go. My problem is just that you never know when that kind of muck get get into your pocket, or onto a table, or anywhere. More importantly for me is keeping the screen clean from fingerprints and other gunk, so I picked up a matte screen protector just now and I am incredibly pleased with it.
I previously tried a Spiegen SGP UltraCrystal, but although it was unbelievably clear (indeed, many people who handled the phone were astonished to learn that there was a screen protector on the device at all), it picked up fingerprints like nobody's business. I was quite disappointed, especially after the huge success of my Armorsuit Militaryshield for my Galaxy Nexus. But matte is definitely the way to go.
Spigen makes a nice screen cover that's glass itself haven't tried it personally but about ready to.

It'll get stratches which CANT BE seen by naked eye, only when exposed to direct light. So if you are okay with it don't use protector.
