Hi all!
Just got my new HOX a day ago. And after 2 full charges I flashed LeeDroid ROM.
But on both ROMs (stock and LeeDroid) my HOX overheats a lot, being loaded heavier than normal.
By a-heavier-than-normal load I understand: installing apps (5 apps, one by one), changing settings, browsing heavy web-site for 17-30 min.
The HOX heats to the temperature, that I can't apply it to my face to make a call.
This seems to be the only issue of my phone, and I wonder, did anybody face with the same problem? Is there any solution?
I've just installed Cool tool - it'll show me the battery temp.

So does your device get hot on the screen if you can't put it to your face?
My One X does get rather hot under heavy usage but it's the area around the camera on the back of the phone that can get quite hot, never the front.
It does sound like an overheating problem to me, especially if you can't physically make a phone call because of the heat
Actually, it overheats both on the whole surface of the screen and under the rear camera (I think, a CPU is located there). It's very uncomfortable to make calls using a hot phone near your ear...
Also, I looked through the thread, where HOX overheated up to ~53 C and HTC said, that is normal. But, I didn't play games - just downloaded programs and used HOX for browsing.
Surfing internet will overheat too.
Official HTC Statement: HTC One X is normal to overheat
Thank you!
Today I tried browsing for ~20-30 min.
The temperature raised up to 39 C. It is normal for hand, but not comfortable for face/ear.
I hope, HTC will fix this, despite their statement (but don't know, if it is possible)...

Is anyone else experiencing this? Surprised how hot my phone got from mild usage earlier today. A search on google seems to imply that it's quite widespread
Only really had issues when using sat nav, used it for an hour , while on with phone plugged in charger, the back was very hot to say the least.
The weather is unusually hot today. Maybe that's a factor?
heat is an issue i didn't know about before i bought it and it was really sad when i found out.
i suggest you to get a case so that you dont feel it so much
Never personally had any heat issues on mine. Are you using the stock ROM?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I am using the stock rom.
Mine gets very hot when charging and using Maps Navigation. Sometimes it even restarts itself even if I'm on a stock ROM when using navigation.
Same problem here! I was only using the SatNav around 15 minutes yesterday and the phone was pretty warm. Not sure if the warm weather played a part. I wasn't charging the phone at the same time.

The overheating isn't even happening when i use any heavy apps. just having it on causes it to emit an uncomfortable temperature. the heat itself is coming out from the bottom part of the phone, just below the battery. is that where the cpu is?

SAme as me, but the phone doesn't get any hotter than my old Iphone 3Gs or my old HTC HD2, GPS always heats the phone up.
They have safety Protocols built in to shut down when they get too hot though, so I would be too worried about it.
Mine gets very hot. I am using stock Rom and no mods. Mine hits into a reset loop when it gets hot too and I have to remove the battery to let it cool down.

I've never had an issue with my Desire crazily overheating but every time I pick up my friend's it's boiling. I guess if you're concerned you could give HTC a ring.

it's barely a few weeks old. quite depressing sending it off for repair so soon.
I had a xperia x1 before, which had a metal battery cover, and still the back got extremely hot, I think record battery temp was about 55°C while using gps in car and charching. Under same conditions never had temp > 40°C with my desire (probably a newer one, allready had latest rom on stock).

yep. i came from an xperia too... and it also got very hot. was hoping to get away from that with the desire.
my old xda used to warm up that bad i had to put it into the aircon stream when driving so it would work again. so i cant complain about the temp of the desire.

What temps do you have when charching and using GPS?
How is the phone mounted, is there some space behinde the phone?
I just want to get sure about your situation...

The thing is - I'm still using my xperia. I've not put the sim card into the desire yet :S the overheating happens when i just doing very low level activity on it. Not even tried GPS yet.
Oh that's definitely not right! It actually sounds pretty dangerous to me. If it's going into HTC they'll get it sorted
Hi, I have a HTC desire, its nice but it gets hot latley when playing games like angry birds for a bit when the battery drops to 20% or so, and I plug in in.. it starts doing reboot cycle.. I think it only happens until the phone cools down.
I know the only real fix for this is a new mainboard, but I am not under warrenty..
any suggestions on how to live with it, or work with it.. someone told me a bad sim card or sd card might do this to the phone... I have already put 2.3 on it and factory reset and such...
thanks
How old is it? In the eu the warranty is 2 years.

Wow, good to see im not the only one. I have the same problems, and depending on the rom they get worse or better. im running CM7 now and i have little problems, but when i was running the ICS beta it happend a lot, both on and of the charger and in my pants pocket or out.
If its overheated and i take out the battery i can smell a sort of molten plastic / overheated electronics smell.
for me it was the same - main problem is motherboard.
in the end service center exchanged for me motherboard and now this problem is gone.
but before this exchange i did following:
* decreased max cpu speed to 576-768MHz (via SetCPU)
* in one of old kernels I was able to manipulate with CPU voltage level, so i was decreasing it for all freq. which was used by me.
* charging only via PC usb ports - when it was able to be fully charged and not overheat
but the proper way would be only to bring your device into service center...
I would also suggest decreasing the max speed
might be that sleep mode doesn't work entirely as it should in some roms, not making the CPU frequency drop enough when the screen is off.
And your device might be getting old and wear is starting to show.
If it's actually damaged, replacing parts may be the only solution
This is a known problem for the first devices. The solution is to change the motherboard, of course at the service center.

You need to pick a good firmware I worth Runnymede AIO V 5.0.1 Special Edition-> Base Runnymede 1.22.461.2 Official Sensation sense 3.5 Android 2.3.5 [CM7/r2] [STOCK] [AD2SDX] [A2SD] [BEATS] [RCTWEAKS] [Aroma Touch Installer]
no problems found! the same problems arise Earlier.
How did you void your warranty? Rooting or installing custom does not void hardware warranty. At least I got my pvt1 motherboard replaced even when I had rooted and used superglue to fix some broken plastic under back cover.
Sent from my HTC Runnymede
Ya, the phone is just out of warrenty, it really is only 1 year in Canada.. no ifs ands or butts...
But the phone only seems to do the reboot loop when I play angry birds when the battery is low and or when I play angry birds when the phone is charging ..
I think it happend once in google street view...
in other words intense apps... that make the phone warm up and then the sensor tells the phone to restart to protect the processor from overheating, but when the phone reboots the thing is still hot so it keeps rebooting.. only solution is to take the phone battery out and let it cool..
I guess this problem could get worse but it doesn't happen with normal web browsing at this point. I might have to live with it until I find someone to replace the mainboard cheaper than HTC wants.. otherwise not worth it.
I guess lowering the CPU max might be great so it doesn't overheat in the 1st place, I will try that.
I don't really understand rom, I have 2.3 gingerbread, is there something else I can change to perhaps get a better radio signal on this puppy ?
THanks GUys
I have this problem, although until recently it only when trying to use it as satnav.
I'm glad to hear it's a known problem though.
I contacted my provider and they said perhaps the battery is getting tired and causing it to reboot due to lack of power. I pointed out that it was the other components near the sim & sd card slots that were getting hot, not the battery, so they sent me another one. I did buy another battery too and that has made no difference either. As soon as I rooted the replacement phone it started getting warm too. I'm also pretty sure that the "replacement" was a refurbed one, since the optical joystick doesn't always respond and when typing msgs sometimes the vibe feedback stops working mid-word.
It's very frustrating not being able to use it for navigation any more (although it works happily with My Tracks for recording routes).
However since I've rooted it, I don't think I'd get away with requesting another replacement phone. I've tried installing other rom's that might run cooler, but when I do they always lock at the HTC splashscreen and I have to restore nandroid backup.
Hello,
i'm new to XDA developers. Should i buy this phone? I'm thinking about it these days but i'm not sure if it is worth. Thanks for your answers.
The same Problem on my Phone! While charging i can not use my Phone.
My solution: Don't touch while charging. :-(
I think I have same problem...my Desire in regular use get worm at 35% and at 38% burns my hand...and what is wors, for 15/20 min. regular use(not havy or gaming) temp. rise from 28% to 37% but something confuse me...last night I play 3d games for an 1 hour and at 20 min. I put it on charger and continue to play games and 40 min. later temp. is 40% and stil no reboot but butom side of phone(not battery...front side (buttons and screen) and back side) is so hot that I can burn my hand on it. I put statistic that battery indicator show(time,%,temp.). So is it like that to you guys? Is your phone have that heat thing for 15 min. of regular use?
Its pic of last night 3D gaming and its all statistic of temp./ % / time...

simply installed it, and it had it run at lowest speed on idle so it could remain cooler
(you can check the settings on it to see what it runs on idle and modify to your needs anyway)
I have similar problem like yours. I suspect the problem is come from SIM because there is no this kind issue happened IF turn to flight mode or tool out the SIM.

I'm a bit worried about my phone overheating when it's not being used. This has happened twice in the last 3 days. It was on my desk, not been used for a while then when I pick it up it's red hot. I hadn't been using the phone recently and the only things I use are phone/sms/internet, no games or anything. It was so hot that I thought I better switch it off. However, after powering off the red light stayed on and the phone continued to get hotter even though it was off. I tried to switch it back on but it wouldn't power on.
Eventually it switched back on, cooled down and all seemed well until it happened again just now. This time I was charging the phone while on, I left it for an hour or so, went back to it and realised it was red hot again and the same thing happened.
The only things that have been different since the problem started are that I flashed the OTA update for the latest ViperX rom (stock kernel) and I've put it in a different case, an official HTC case with a hard back and leather front flap. Could either of these be causing this? I've searched the ViperX thread and although others have mentioned the phone getting hot it's always been when they were playing games. Mine just heats up on its own while not in use
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm really worried the phone will overheat without me realising and fry itself to a crisp or something
Edit: I forgot to mention, I installed SmartStay Ex recently as well, could this cause overheating?
I’m on Viper 2.1.0 too, and don’t play games. Mine never gets hot while browsing, youtube, streaming music etc..The only time it gets a little warm is when navigating (google maps) + BT streaming + charging at the same time. If yours is getting hot for no reason then I suspect there is a rouge app or something else is forcing your phone to run at full speed all the time. Install CPU spy and check how your CPU behaves. Most of the time should be spent in deep sleep while rest at 640MHz or lower speeds. It shouldn't be spending that much time in 500/1400Mhz mode if you are not running CPU/Graphics intensive apps. You can also check battery stats and see which apps are using most of the battery.

do a factory reset, probably some bad app that is running in the background like crazy. disable smartstay and see if that changes anything

Thanks Phoenix and KLUVJ, I think you were right about it being an app. I uninstalled Smartstay as that was the only thing I've installed in the last couple of weeks and so far everything seems fine. It's not even warm
If it happens again I'll get the CPU app Phoenix mentioned and look into it more closely, but I've got a feeling it must have been Smartstay.
Thanks for your advice, very much appreciated
I just bought mine yesterday and this is my first tablet. I like it mainly for the size and the s-pen. During my 1 day of use I immediately feels that it's heating up a little too fast around the left side (maybe this is where the battery is). Do you guys have the same problems.
Thanks.

I think that is where the CPU is. I'd install a terminal shell and run the "ps" command to see what process(es) are using CPU.
update:
I've installed Diagnosis App and it's showing ~40C when playing games... Is this normal temp for a tab?
Thanks
Is it normal for a device to heat up under heavy use? Clearly yes. Is it normal for a device to heat up while sitting there with nothing going on? Clearly no. Does your computer heat up when you use it? This is no different, except that there is no fan to help keep it cool. If you are not seeing any problems, reboots, crashes, or abnormal battery drain, why are you worried?
I think CPU problem.
I think the problem is can be CPU.
Please check your CPU

Totally normal. About 104F, that's not even close to hot. Don't even need to start getting worried until you hit 120 or 130F.
This is starting to be the question that gets asked on here every day or 2. Already about 4 other threads asking this exact question.

I agree with you but, Do you think it's normal when I start to use it and after 10 minutes of web browsing, facebook and downloading apps it increases its Temperature level around 10°C? This is my first tablet and I'm worried about that. I compare the temperature with my Razr i and their behaviors are similar but, comparing with a Sony Tablet S it reaches 30°C doing the same processes. I hope you can help me, I just made a phone call to the shop where I bought it for a device replacement, but it wouldn't have any case if all Note 8 devices present the same problem.
Thank you very much!
This is now my second 8.0 and I really feel that this runs much cooler temperatures. Writing notes for several hours or casual playing I felt the first Note 8.0 also heat up a bit too much (still comfortable to hold) from the left side whereas this second runs nicely without heating up. Also what I noticed yesterday was the while charging the chargers was just warm when before with the first device it was actually getting hot.
Hi Friends,
after 7 years of Samsung I am finally back to HTC and so far I am loving the device except for one thing that concerns me a little.
After turning it on it started installing Apps, Updating etc. doing the regular stuff it was getting quite warm on the back. Not really hot but warm enough to be a bit uncomfortable.
Now that I plugged it in to charge I checked the temperature and it says 42c. I didn't touch it for 30 minutes, it was just charging with the stock charger and reaching this temperature.
Is that unusual? Should I worry?
Thanks for helping!
nervermind the temperature went down again. It seems like updating apps makes the device overheat. Anyone else with this experiecne when you setup the device for the first time?

It's worse when you are flashing TWRP and backing up in order to root. When I did that for mines, it had to update all of my apps about 172 of them. Phone was really warm even with a spigen case on it.
That's weird. I am not used to this kind of heat from my samsung phones. Maybe it is the all metal body that conducts the heat better to the point where you feel it.
It makes me feel like the phone is really struggeling and draining the battery.
Just regular Web Browsing will make it reach a solid 40C.
Anyone?
