Awesome Batterylife! - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
the batterylife of my play is .. how i call it "serious"
Today at 2am as i going to bed, my play hat 3% Battery.
As i wake up 5 hours later it has 3% again.
Is the battery defect or what is this? =D
Thanks

Your battery's fine. My battery % often goes "up" overnight. I'm on JokaWild Rom + Doomkernel v13 3013 which does have a very good battery life, but not infinite
Maybe the indicator takes a while to catch up coming out of deep sleep or something.

The battery indicator predicts life under current use takes about 15 to 20mins to adjust again

My battery drains a lot on ICS

my battery is awesome too, and im on stock kernel/rom. I tried not to play anything, just calls and texts; it lasted like 4 days. Until last night, it was more than 2 days and a half when i had to charge it, as i played >2 hours of dungeon hunter 2. its amazing

If you flash between ROMs it's worth recalibrating the battery, if not you can get the "increase" in battery life.
More info and how to calibrate with an app here: http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...asy-way-with-battery-calibration-for-android/

Im gonna buy 3600mah battery. I will use my play with awesome battery and jokawild + doomlord v13. Its gonna be legen... Wait for it: Dary! Legendary!

Battery life on ics sucks. I really hope our official update will have battery life similar to gingerbread

It all also depends on how you use your phone. I can make mine last from 6:45am to up to 3am. (I have kind of a fixed schedule, don't judge me lol)
• I have the brightness at 50% or so at all times, I can't see the screen if it's too dim.
• When not checking Facebook or playing Draw Something, anything data related, turn data and wifi off in the wireless and network settings. Don't do airplane mode because you might want to call or text, for MMS Messaging, 3/4G will turn on and back off when the message is sent or received. My 3G Signal is decent, when I'm at home, I have Wifi on unless my connection craps out, unless I'm playing Xbox, since I tether while plugged to AC power, XBL performs better on my 3G Plan apparently...
• Keep phone on silent with vibrate on at all times.
It may vary between third party batteries, roms and kernels.
I'm using a locked R800x with DarkForest 3.0.5.

[Q] Battery consumption: I need your help for a comparison

I found a very good program for my Motorola MB525 (Defy) for monitoring the battery draining from the market.
It's name is Batery Monitor Widget and it's free.
With 81% of battery it says only 7 hours and 16 minute left without doing anthing!!! The data is on and Wi-Fi connected to my home network.
Is it normal?? In the night in airplane mode after 9 hours it drain 8%-9% of battery. Again: is it normal???
If you can try this application and report your results...I think there is some application that drain my battery!!
Thanks!
Not really a comparison here, just a little story.
Yesterday i screwed up my Defy playing around with some rom. Nothing terrible, but i had no time to re-flash another rom, i had to go to work. So, i pickep up my old SE xperia x1.
After an entire day, 4-5 calls and several sms, that phone drained less than 10%. Then, last night i put the x1 in stand-by, well, that was a real stand-by, no power consumption at all.
Now i'm back to Defy, 2 hours, 15% drained...
All this just to say android is amazing but terribly hungry of power, even when the screen is off, even when airplane mode is on. I don't need a comparison to know about it
EDIT:
you said your wifi was left on, well android is hungry of data too. Even if you do nothing while wifi is on an amount of data still flows, sometimes i can see several mb downloaded by my Defy in a few hours, but no real usage by me. This also contributes, you should try to turn the wifi off or disable background data when you don't need it.
In standby (3g, sync only calendar and contacts) I have 1-1.5% battery consumption / hour. I think this is normal
With my normal usage i have some 20-40% left at the end of the day... also Ok.
WIFI on & connected will consume a lot of battery so I am not surprised.
BTW I also had an Xperia X1 and the consumption was roughly the same as the Defy... In fact more than 1-2 days on a charge I very rarely had on any of my smartphones with normal usage.

last week I was working in the forest for a few days with no signal at all, so I turned on airplane mode: I remember it going from 45% in the morning to 42% in the late afternoon!
(with everything turned off, just used it occasionally to have an idea of what time it was)

It's ok to be an android fan, i like it too, as i said it is amazing. But, battery life is definitely NOT the strong point. I can compare the two phones now, at this moment. Honestly Defy's battery life is a lot shorter.

what's the other phone you compared?
I really don't have problem with Defy's battery life. As far as my memory serves, all cell phones I ever owned (7~8, all nokia, se, moto) could standby (just standby and don't use at all) for a week or made around 5 hours call. In my case Defy can also standby for a week or allow 5~6 hours usage.
I'm on a 2g network (probably helps alot), as I have wifi at home and at work. I have an exchange email, a gmail, 2 yahoo mails, and a weather app, all allowed to sync at default settings. I don't have facebook or twitter. GPS and bluetooth are enabled only when necessary (occasionally). I overclock Defy to 1000Mhz with SetVsel, and underclock to 300 when screen off. With conscious observation over some time, I find that 1% battery is consumed around every:
- 2 hours standby with wifi off; or
- 1 hour standby with wifi on; or
- 3~5 minutes usage (calls, emails, surfing,...)
thats some amazing battery life u got there abc ...what rom are u using?
hey guys, just a quick question. with which setting do you think i'll have longer battery life: 800MHz/58vsel or 1000MHz/56vsel? btw, i got my phone stable at 800MHz/45vsel

I was using the orange 2.2, and am using the finland 2.2 now. Both have similar battery usage.
But I have uninstalled some stock applications which I don't use but keep running in background, like BlurHome.apk (with Launcherpro), InPocketService.apk, ToggleWidgets.apk (with ExtendedControls), WeatherWidget.apk (with FancyWidget), VSuiteApp.apk etc.

You may be right, I had the Xperia X1 something like 1 year ago.
I had until now FSC T830, HTC Hermes, HTC Diamond, Xperia X1, Samsung i7500 Galaxy (my first Android), Acer Liquid and now the Defy. As far as I remember I always had to charge every night (or every 2 nights at best)
Overall I think Android battery life is worse than Windows mobile was BUT I also have more background programs running now than I had in the WM days.
What I definitely don't like in Android battery life is lack of consistency. One week you get30-40 hours at a charge and suddenly 12 hours... Than you have to make detective work: look what new App might be the guilty one, check what's running in background, reboot and see if it happens again, factory reset, etc. I guess this is the price of freedom
Im on uk 2.2 and i get three days at a push i jus have a weather widget on sync every 3 hours.
Iv also undervolted 300/16 600/29 800/39 with setvsel on performance mode and up threshold on 99% and limit to vsel 1 when screen iz off
Im on three uk so im constonly on 3g and use no wifi etc etc with normal sms usage and a few calls through out off 1 charge

There has to be something wrong in your case. I find that there seems no wifi/2g/3g connection. Could that be the problem?
I dont use 3g ..cuz its expensive in my country ..and I only turn wifi on when I need it
And that shouldnt be the case ...I think id loose a lot more battery if wi-fi would be on all the time

theres 2 main questions, are you using sbc or a wall charger and two, who makes the battery
and if its a non-seidio, some of them just plain suck. i've bought 4 different ones from ebay/amazon only one actually works well after calibration and many cycles of usage.

You need to condition your battery
I've been dealing with this for ever and I thin kI finally haqve a routine figured out that is getting me CM7 like battery life on a Sense ROM.
1st, I've had the Sedio 3500 for a few months, and like you, I was getting ridiculous drain, until I started sdoing some reading and experimenting.
Here's what I do.
First, off, I have GPS, WIFI and Data disable all the time, unless I need one of them, and then I turn off again when I'm done. I keep my screen off all the time, unless I'm using the phone. I also only use minimal widgets. Calender, Fany Widgets Weather and Forcast, Messages widget, the Beautiful toggle widget for silence and my MIUI Music player on 3 screens, using Rosie. The other 4 screens are just empty.
Second, as for the battery itself, charge the phone for about 8 hrs, and this is the HTC method, unplug it, turn it off, and charge it for another hour, while off.
Unplug it, turn it on for 2 minutes, then power down and plug it in for another hour.
Now, before powering I up, I do the Hoodoo-voodoo-like 10 time unplug thing.
Basically, unplug, light goes off. Plug it in, light is red, wait til it turns green, unplug it and do this 10 times.
Reboot to recovery, wipe battery stats, power up, all while plugged in, and once fully booted, unplug.
I did this today, using the new Koni 3, with Netarchy 4.3.2 SBC HAVS, and riding then used the phone pretty steadily to play Klondike, text, etc an an hour later was just dropping to 99%.
THAT is pretty good, compared to what it used to be like, when it would drop about 1 percentile per minute, even when it was in sleep mode.
Reconditioning is not going to work when you buy a crappy battery. Someone said voodo? You're kidding, right?
Please understand there is no regulation that prevents people from stating their cheap batteries on eBay are 9800mAh but only providing 1000.
I bought 1500mAh eBay batteries that are only 900mAh, verified with equipment.
Check www.batteryboss.org to see what I'm talking about.
Best thing to do? Buy a $1 battery wall charger, two OEM/non-generic htc batteries and carry in your wallet. I wouldn't be surprised if your 3500mAh battery actually packs less juice than the original battery. Oh and your phone is looking like a brick for nothing.
yeah this is why i asked, if you bought a very cheap extended battery, well its rating is different than what it is providing you with
I think I have battery problems solved; Just turn Data off when you're not using it. My phone has been off the charger since Friday night @ 6:30pm. Now it's Sunday @ 9:30am. That's 39 hours and I'm sitting at 63% and I've been texting, making calls, playing a few games, and anytime I need data, I just turn it back on til I'm done and then back off again. That's the only thing I'm doing different now, and before I made that little change, my battery was a good or bad as anyone else's

When I am home, I have WiFi enabled all the time, no 3G/4G. I heard WiFi is better(with good signal) for your battery than 3G enabled. Is this true? My battery lasts about 7-8 hrs of moderate-heavy usage.
Also, here's a thing with all of you trying to tweak your battery to get best performance. From my own experience, I am never a step or two away from a charger be it while I'm on my computer at work, at home or in the car. So what good is it to have the phone out of the charger for days?
I understand WiFI is better, too, from what I've read.
Also, if I can find it, I found a thread on androidfrums from htc that recommends you let your battery drain to below 50% before charging it.
Like you, I have chargers all over, so it's not a big deal, but to be at where I am now, with this experiment on turning data off is simply amazing to me.

That is definitely a huge performance improvement but I wonder what's happening with all your apps that need the data sync in the background. I have apps like Pulse, Facebook, K9, Handcent, etc that update every couple of hours or have "push" enabled. What is the trick to allow 3g, 4g, wifi to be enabled automatically only when sync is required and then disabled?
Good question.
All I use is the weather bug and Fany Widgets weather, ad far as widgets that need updating. I think, once they try to update and can't connect, they "freeze" for lack of a better word, until you reconnect and manually update.
It's a little bit of a pain, but for this kind've battery life, I'm not gonna complain
I think what would work is an app that puts the phone in "Airplane Mode" (bad Moment memories ), but allows the calls to come thru. This way there's absolutely no Internet traffic but your Evo is still usable as a phone.
That's probably, basically what I'm doing, but like you, coming from the Moment, Airplane Mode is a bad word....

[DISCUSSION] Xperia S battery life

Had my beautiful white S for 24 hours now. Overall very positive, except battery life so far. Drained 23 % overnight from a 100% charge. In only 7 hours I had NO activity. BT and WiFi on.
I hope this will improve very soon. That is a no go. Would like to hear from you about your experience regarding your new Xperia S.

For me, I removed junk I don't use, like foursquare. That alone made a huge difference. I also turn off data at night, and only went down about 4% while I slept.
Another option is to install something like JuiceDefender, which automatically shuts down data except switching it on every hour or so to allow for some syncs, then shuts it down again.
same as my arc, drained about 30% in the first day, with time it'll be better.
i was about to ask the same question. 7 hours seems about right, but i have been doing a lot of app installs, so I will give it time to settle down.
I use the XS in Hong Kong. If I use the phone online to play with internet browser, battery will be drained from 100% to 69% in approx. 1 hour. Is it too fast? Or it just a normal way when compare with SII or GN?

Ohh yes. U are soo right. Had my phone now for 4 days. The display uses an average of 70% of the overall battery consumption. It is not WiFi, calls, BT or any other functions. It is the display that drains. Will give it the weekend to see if it improves. If not I will return it on Monday :-( And my brightness is down on less than 25% so not much to do there.

Had an Arc for around one year. On a daily average the screen took about 55% and I had no problems to get a full day out of it. (approx 16 to 18 hours) and still 10-15% juice left. Now I get max 10-12 hours out of my S and NO juice left. Really disappointing. Even my old X10 did better than my new S.

Surely the HD display amongst other things, ie how you have your phone set up, may go someway to why your experiencing poor battery life compared to your Arc.
Try to disable Bravia engine and see if you notice any difference especially during the night.
My phone has the same apps as my Arc, actually minus few of them.
No autosync etc.
Basically it drains the battery quick, it's unacceptable. It behaves exactly like one of the older Arc firmwares, which was also draining battery like crazy.
Than they fixed it and it's still brilliant. My Arc on Flight Mode beeing just a backup in case of any problems, runs 3rd day on one charge, still 75% left.
I think S is just not optimized and it makes me mad.
Just got My XS yesterday I did one fully charge this morning . Turned off data at home, will not know until battery is fully charged by a few cycles. I love the phone irrespective of the flaws. I think may be see in a week or 2 where my battery settles.
Again. 25% battery drain in only 6 hours over night. No physical activity at all. This baby goes back on Monday :-(

You can use Profile Scheduler (free from market) and set a schedule.
I've set the schedule in which the airplane mode will be activated at 12.00 am and turned back to normal at 6.00 am.
By this way, my phone battery drains overnight just only 2-4%.
Let's try man

I actually agree with that tbh, and another thing is battery life all depends on how the individual uses their phone.
I had the sgs2 and alot of people said oh the battery life is rubbish but yet they had:
screen brightness on 100%
3g, wi-fi, bluetooth always on
live wallpapers running.
Plus they were using the internet for like 2hours
sending numerous emails
playing games
listening to music
I mean come on its a phone at the end of the day, its not a super computer or something or some nuclear powered device.
I nearly 2 days out of my sgs2 under moderate - quite heavy usage
because I turned my screen brightness all the way down
didnt leave 3g, wi-fi, bluetooth on all the time only when i needed to use those features, i never used live wallpapers and i dont send numerous emails.
when i had the play again people said the battery life was rubbish but again i got about 1day 10hours or a bit more sometimes based on the above mentioned info.
so as long as my SXS last 1day even I dont mind that because at the end of the day it has a HD screen so its going to use alot of power.
Okay so on my third day with the phone...
my battery is fine, actually...more than fine. I turn off my wi-fi/bluetooth/gps when not needed, and I don't run my battery heavy apps for a long time.
I also installed a task killer...I know it's in theory not needed, but I will see how it goes.
woke up around 7 today, used my wifi, used a battery intensive app (dream zoo , it's an addiction) for like 15min or so. Went for a walk, used the camera...a LOT, made a lot of panorama pictures. It's now almost 11:15 and i'm only down less than 15% I believe.
It's got much better battery usage than my X10 to be honest...but this is a high-end full HD phone, I wasn't expecting my battery to last so well D:
I will update again at the end of the day about how low it got, but I am pleased with it.

4G Battery Drain

Hey, im on Telus so i dont have any other modes I can switch to to lower the drain. Ive noticed my battery drain is HORRENDOUS
Over the past 4 hours ive dropped 60%!
Now im wondering if im just running too many apps or if my stock battery may not be holding a proper charge anymore, and wanted to compare with others to see if others are running the same amount of apps and getting better battery or what
Ive got the following on:
Trillian (IM app)
K9-mail checking 2 aps
Regular Sync (Twitter, FB, Dropbox, Google(Calendar, Gmail, Contacts)
The battery usage summary seems to lie, 35% is the screen but only 13 minutes. Yet im at 40%
Android System at 20, Cell standby 13, Phone Idle 8
While heading to work, i ran DI Radio(music streaming), and lost 20% over around 35 minutes.
Im using the Tuesday rom with it's default kernel.
Is there anything I can do for better battery, because I dont have wifi in most places, and im running 3-4 bars constantly yet the phone just drains rentelessly. Even my Mugen battery was only lasting 16 hours...
It's quite possible that it's the ROM. I used to always get 8 hours on a single charge, regardless of location or ROM. I'm running Eugene's CM7 and I'm getting 13 hours on the same typical usage.
I'm running on Telus as well, with no wifi at all.
Although I am not running all of your apps, I would still consider myself a moderate to heavy user.

any syncing or usage of the network will take a drain. any usage.
you can always turn on airplane mode and let it sit a few hours and see the drain, that determines whether its network or a ROM/kernel drain.
But yes, using 4G has big battery cost
Battery Life
I will tell you what, I have wasted so many hours playing with different ROM's and what not to find the one with the best battery life. And I will tell you what, the DARKSIDE:IGITAL::WARFARE ROM's out do any other ROM out there. I dunno what it is that thederekjay is doing, but Samsung should get this guy on pay roll because his work is the best.
I'm at hour 8 today on Darkside Digital Warfare, and 70% free from 8am to 4:30pm. I have push corporate email, automatic brightness, friendcaster push, and a slew of accounts and it runs like a champ with amazing battery.
Make sure your phone is going into Deep Sleep as often as possible when screen is off. My phone seems to be extremely picky in regards to which charger it likes and more often than not (even had this happen on the stock charger) the phone refuses to sleep after being charged (even if only for a few seconds...).
Download CPUSpy from the market and after each charge, go to CPUSpy, press menu and Reset Totals (phone cannot enter Deep Sleep during charging so it's important you start fresh after a charge to get accurate sleep time). Turn the screen off for a minute or two and turn it back on. Press menu again and Refresh Totals. In my experience, if the phone is not sleeping at this point - Deep Sleep showing in Unused States - then it will not sleep all day and remain in 384Mhz for hours, killing the battery rather quickly. From then, if I plug the phone in a supported charger (even for a second) and disconnect, Deep Sleep resumes normally. Rebooting always fixes it too.
If, like me, a lot of people also have this problem with the stock charger as well, I bet many are dissatisfied with the battery performance... The phone is supposed to spend the majority of it's time in Deep Sleep. I get this issue with several different chargers and cables and on different ROMS / kernels (including stock... go figure).
Im pretty sure its the signal itself draining it. It uses sleep for at least 40% of the time its on. I use my phone a good amount, but its the fact that if it sits on 4g even with the screen of, its rapidly draining during this time. ive even reset timers and left it sitting for an hour and itll be in sleep but lose 8% over an hour just doing nothing. I still wanna be able to recieve notifications tho so turning off data isnt an option. I will test turning off data anyways to see if the drain stops.
The battery drain is all those persistent internet apps running. That is what you call heavy usage. Trillian and the FB app being the two biggest. Music streaming would be up there as well if you aren't in good signal area. Look at your battery stats and see what your signal strength is.

I second this. If battery problem persist download better battery stats to see if you dont have any kernel wakelocks

[Q] Utterly HORRIBLE battery life across batteries and ROMs

Hey XDA
I'm having absolutely HORRIBLE battery life with my GIO. I've gone through extensive testing to find the root of the problem but nothing seems to be the cause. So far i've had to charge twice, maybe three times a day.
So here's the story. A couple of months ago I noticed my Gio's battery was dying quicker so I flashed another rom [Particle Mod] over it. I was happy, until I found out the problem persisted. Then I flashed a 2.3.7 Cyanogen mod, the battery still wasn't lasting and the battery life was only slightly worse owing to CYMOD.
I then flashed the GALAXYICS beta, and it's getting even worse. I've even bought new 1600mAh batteries to see if it was the battery's fault. Apparently not, so I went back to stock for a day or too to see what it was like, and I was still lucky to get 12hrs out of it with featherweight usage.
I simply do not know what to do, I've tried numerous battery mods [flashable zips etc] and they've only done a tiny bit. Lately I've been playing with clockspeeds but it seems to only make a difference if I raise the minimum speed, the extra top end performance is nice though.
So, what I'm saying is this normal for a Gio? Is it a hardware fault? software? 4th dimensional? I'm at a loss, and I think the infamous Samsung cell standby drain is to blame.
Attached is screenshots of general battery screen, Cell standby and the Graph. I've been switching between 2G and 3G, Airplane mode on and off, and listening to music for an hour or so and It seems to have utterly crippled the device doing simple tasks, and I've done EVERYTHING to minimize the drain by lowering screen brightness to %0, turning off vibration, animations, wifi, GPS, BT, radio, everything except google contacts sync and a couple of root things in between like deleting the batt stats.
The new batteries help somewhat, but I still can't last long enough for a single school day... FFUUUUU!
I really don't want to have to buy a new phone, I'm only 14 so I can't work to get one, and I can't just ask my parents because then I'm just being a spoilt brat. I want to make this phone last as long as possible [Until I can work for a Google Nexus or something] and the battery isn't helping.
Thanks for reading.
Yeah you're a spoiled brat. This is not great but not extraordinarily bad. My epic 4g touch spends the day on the charger.

Well, it seems to be all right with your battery. And your '1600 mAh' battery was just a fake. A lot of people get scores like this
What I am worried about is not so much the capacity, it's the RATE at which it drains. I see a lot of "stair steps" on my graphs so I'm not so sure, especially when checking the other phones in the house "a Galaxy Ace and 2 HTC Incredible S's] they seem to have a more consistent curve, I notice my batteries will drain by as much as %5 in half a minute, which is either a reporting bug or inconsistent strain.
Have you tried to do a wipe and test it with no installed apps?
Do not trust the "stairs", it is just bad reporting (as you said).
In my case when I switch on 3G or WiFi, it happens that the battery drops by 10% instantly.
The only value that is relevant is the total duration between a full charge (100% charge + several hours still plugged) and the "low battery" indicator.
According to my own experience, the things that drains the most are :
- 3G network : this is the main factor, by far.
If you can, try to stay in 2G mode most of the time, switch to 3G when needed, and as soon as not needed anymore go back to 2G.
- WiFi / BT
If you switch On/Off very often, or is always On and you moves very often (changing hotspot), then WiFi / BT will be a very important battery drain factor.
- Multimedia
Videos / MP3 drains battery a lot.
If you can, switch to "airplane mode" or switch off the phone during night.
Finally, with 3G / WiFi / Multimedia usage mix, a "One Day" autonomy is good.
I'm sorry but you will not find any smartphone that can pass "One Day" with that usage type.
With my own usage (very few calls, sms, wifi) and with above tricks, my Gio lasts 4-5 days.
PS : As you mentioned, available ROMs are very unequal as far as battery drain is concerned.
Stock ROMs (and moded ones like Adrenaline) are the champions of battery life, while ICS ROMs are the worst.
CM7.2 ROMs are in between.
I agree with Vilo76. When you don`t have wireless or 3g, or play any music/games, you can actually get a few days of life from your phone, but if you do some of the stuff i just said, the battery life is going down like crazy...
The only think you can do to get some bit of juice out of your phone is if you format your battery, but actually that is just for a better battery reading, not actually extending your battery life...
By the way, I can't figure out why phone manufacturers don't use more long lasting batteries ...
There are many many examples of batteries that are about the same size as a phone one, but deliver way more mAh.
Among others :
- House wireless alarms keypad batteries are the same size but can be as much as 3000mAh ...
- Classic cylindrical AA or AAA accu can be as much as 4000mAh ...
While a typical phone battery hardly ever exceed 1500mAh.
Okay, I'm back and I have some results for today
3G Is DEFINITELY using more in Australia on idle, while 2G is a bit less brutal
There is something cause my phone to wake intermittently, I've turned sync and location services, and killed any apps that may be checking the net etc, but it's still waking up with screen off.
---------------------------
Today I decided to do something bit extreme, I ran the phone an airplane mode all day with the original "dead" battery, I only lost %20 all day with 1hr or so music usage, phone standby is up but Cell standby isn't there at all [Obviously].
Something's telling me that's it the cell radio and whatever is waking my phone up is causing the suck. I'm upgrading to GalaxyICS CM9 beta10 today with a full dalvik, battery and cache wipe, so we'll see how that goes

MORE NEWS
Good news this time! I've installed a Cyanogen Mod 7.2 on their [The one that's updates through Goomanager] and the battery is holding steady at 100 idling for 1hr on 2G.... Not sure if I have to calibrate but I think I've fixed it, it's working better than stock!
