Is there a native Android Chinese input method? I know that iOS allows you to write the characters. Is there something similar that is not third party.

My dad was wondering the same thing. Unfortunately I don't see it in my friend's Galaxy Nexus, so I would say no, it does not have native Chinese input and you'll need to download a third party one (unless custom ROMs have it, then you can go that route).
There is, however, native Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) voice typing. So you can select "Chinese, Yue (Hong Kong)" and when you press the voice command (on the keyboard or for Google search) you can search for things by speaking Cantonese which is pretty cool.
HTC does a good job of filling in what Vanilla Android is missing as HTC keyboards (probably only in Asian versions of HTC phones) have pinyin and hand writing options on their custom keyboards. Pretty accurate recognition too (I have it on my HTC Panache).

Is this possible at all? I've been trying to find out how to do it but I get way too many results about other keyboards or other iterations of HTC's keyboard...
Anyway, I can't seem to figure out how to do it on my EVO, kind of indispensable since I switch a lot from English to Spanish mid-message (and vice versa)... Whenever I type anything in Spanish I end up inadvertently adding words to the dictionary, and the alternative would be to have no auto-correction which would suck.
So can anybody help an Android noobie out? I've been meaning to try Swype (which I'm told has a key for language switching) but I wanted to have the option of using either keyboard anyway.
I heard the keyboard for WP7 is nice by default and ill find that out when i get my phone in a couple days but i was wondering if there will be any other keyboards for WP7 like Android has SWYPE. Do you think they will come with the upcoming updates , apps on the marketplace, or with the WP7 "Jailbreak"?
There are no other keyboards available at this time.
However, I can say that the WP7 keyboard is, in my opinion, the finest software keyboard on the market, hands down.
Swype and the HTC IME keyboards on android are good.. but they pale in comparison to this one in my experience.

The buttons are not bigger than Android..but I seem to be able to type more accurately on WP7. No idea why. Nice, nontheless.
I've bought my device (HTC HD7) in Germany and it doesn't have Cyrillic keyboard. It's not a problem for me to use English interface, device supports displaying Cyrillic fonts but I can't type text on two Cyrillic languages which I'm using the most.
Do not having the ability to add Cyrillic keyboard at the moment is THE MOST ANNOYING thing with the device. I simply can't use it for basic needs like writing SMS or e-mail to somebody on my native language. When buying the device I thought that It shouldn't be a problem adding a keyboard but now I am very disappointed. Need to use second device (old Nokia smartphone) each time when I should write something on Cyrillic on the way. Ironically, HD7 does not support sharing Internet connection to my secondary device, so I have to pay for two Internet-enabled plans which makes me completely unhappy.
Is any way to help me without selling the device back?

are wp7 devices sold in countries that use that language? If not, I'm not sure you will get any support from microsoft until they are.

From about three weeks of use so far, I'd say it's the second-best software keyboard I've ever used, after the iPhone keyboard. I can usually type faster than I could on the HTC keyboards on WM and Android. On the iPhone I could type without even looking down because the autocorrect works amazingly well for the most part-- not quite there yet on WP7 (despite a physically larger screen and thus keyboard), but almost.
For now, there's no way to replace the keyboard, though for standard use, you probably won't need a replacement one. Makes sense for non-Latin characters, but WP7 basically lacks Unicode support (very few character sets built in), so it can't do much for non-Latin scripts anyway.
I find WP7 to have the second best keyboard ever, too. But, I disagree in that I find it more accurate than the iPhone keyboard (or at least better at autocorrection). I find the autocorrect makes fewer contextual errors and will allow many intentional strange words while correcting most typing errors.
However, the keyboard on my Blackberry 9700 still rocks the Optimus 7
I dunno, but I don't think I will ever be as efficient in typing on the virtual keyboard as the real one. Aside from accuracy, it is simply far easier to enter common symbols (like quotes, dollar signs, dashes, and parenthesis) and numbers. Parltly because physical keys allows for more accurate smaller keys. Also, having a real mouse-like cursor is massively useful for typing and editing.
Ok fine, yes, there are WP7 devices with slider keyboards, but I dislike sliders... yes, yes, I'm picky.

I live in Japan and own a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I'm running on the Docomo network.
I've rooted my phone. I have Android 4.0.4.
I started to check out the different ROMS and decided to use the Jelly Bean ROM I found on galaxynexusroot.com called:

2 problems so far, the first and main problem for me is that there is no longer a choice to use the IME Japanese keyboard that came with my GNEx. I need this keyboard because I have email in Japanese. I've seen some apps, but the inability to change to kanji characters makes them useless for me.
The second problem, when I go into my contacts so that I can sync my gmail to it and get all my contacts back on, it won't. It will say that it can't make a secure connection and it will stop. I can run it fine when creating it in the settings area, but that won't allow me to import my contacts.
I am new, I have checked, but I have a feeling there aren't many Japanese users on here. Hopefully I'm wrong...
There are plenty of Japanese IMEs in the market I'm sure, I know Google has one of their own. What do you mean about the inability to change to kanji? That doesn't make sense, Japanese IME without kanji would be useless, the Google IME shows kanji being input in the screenshots.

I saw a few of the IME applications and the remarks made that it was useless for the users since there was an inability to change from hiragana to kanji. I just saw the Google version and I'll see how well that works on my stock ROM where I already have a Japanese IME that comes with the ROM (Does that make sense, I'm still getting use to this). Several languages were available in the Jelly Bean ROM but none were Japanese. I'd like it if it were available right there in the ROM. I guess I'm just not sure if this is something creators of new ROMS remove or if it's something that has to be placed in.
Yeah, the CJK IMEs are part of localized ROMs but they aren't in the ROMs that come with US phones so that's probably why they aren't in most custom ROMs. It makes sense too, the IMEs take up space. I use Google's Pinyin input for Chinese, but I wouldn't want the Japanese IME taking up space on my phone since I wouldn't have a use for it.
Using Google's one. I don't like the design but it works really well, especially with people and places' names.
BTW, Google translate supports hand writing for Japanese. Might come handy sometimes, but you need internet for that.

I know I can install another keyboard which supports Jap but I don't like it because it's inconvenient for switching keyboard every time.

Japanese has its own stock samsung keyboard separate from the Regular Stock keyboard. You'll need to get that apk and then get the necessary libs for it. Its annoying thats for sure.

If you haven't tried ATOK お試し版, it might be worth it even if you have to switch keyboard from time to time. You can take the trial for a spin.
There are a few other keyboards in my sig, to consider and play around with.

I'm not sure if all of them are actually necessary or not, but that's what got iWNN (called "Samsung Japanese Keypad" in the UI) and MazeC (for handwriting) working on my US (TMobile) Note2. The voice recognition will fail with a SIM card error unless you have a Docomo SIM (so go into the settings and change voice input to Google Voice - I'm not sure how well that works), and I don't think this gets emoji working (it probably wouldn't work anyway outside Japan).
The process to get them was a bit involved. I had to untar the tar file, then run sim2img on the system.img and cache.img... then after mounting both, in the cache partition, there is a file recovery/sec_csc.zip. Most of the files I listed above are in the system partition, but the rest need to be extracted from that zip file. Then you can put them in place with a root file manager or adb.... If that sounds like too much work, maybe I can zip the the files up (not a flashable zip) and post them here.
Besides that, I'm a bit surprised by the lack of integration compared to the built in keyboard, especially with the multiwindow (it doesn't detach like the builtin keyboard). Also, you'll have to switch back to the "Samsung Keyboard" to get the sliding input or decent English handwriting recognition. So, I'm not sure if I actually missed anything and it or maybe that's just how it works.
The theming/colors also won't match what you see in the videos - it's more gray like the default keyboard on US Note2, while it appears to be blue in the youtube videos I found.
Thank you for your hard work in testing and posting here but I am afraid that's not what I am looking for, I need the Japanese IME integrated right into Samsung Keyboard then I can just slide to change the IME right away without needing effort to switch keyboards. For that mazec Japanese handwriting we can just purchase from Google Play if needed, no need to flash the JAP ROM.
Moreover, I tested Mazec's trial version. Mazec handwriting is good, but IMO it's not as good as the handwriting of Samsung keyboard compared to what I've been using with English and Chinese handwriting.

Basically you can't integrate Japanese into the stock Samsung keyboard, at least not yet. It seems to have a different IME on all phones, at least in my experience.
If/when Swiftkey add Japanese to their language packs then it might get added to the Samsung Keyboard as well.
If you want all your languages in one keyboard you'll have to resort to using Swype or Smart Keyboard Pro.

Yes, I am using Swype but the reason I love Samsung keyboard more because their handwriting is the best one IMO.
The current Samsung keyboard uses the swiftkey api/dictionaries/prediction engines whatever they call it I believe.
And swiftkey doesn't have a Japanese input method yet. So I guess I'm making the assumption that when that gets updated then you'll see Japanese added for the Samsung keyboard too.

Just notice that you're from Japan. So could you tell which keyboard app you're using to type and handwrite Japanese ?
Honestly I don't do much handwriting as my character drawing is terrible! As regards keyboards try what has been recommended. I use either the stock Samsung Japanese keyboard or swype for ease of switching when typing.

Add Japanese locale?
I too have a Galaxy Note 2 and I'm bemoaning the lack of Asian languages on it.
I'm not bothered by having to install a third party Japanese IME as I don't type in Japanese much. What I really want is to be able to switch the device language to Japanese (and/or Korean actually) just as I can switch it to French etc, for testing purposes. I'm not even that bothered about whether a few glitches and so on happen; I just want to be able to test application localization on one device!
Is there a way to make the 7100 act as if it's Japanese, such that apps use jp resources and so on?
For localization, I think you are looking for "Language Enabler" ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wanam ), which should work on any (rooted) Samsung device. Just open it up, select the languages you want, save and reboot.
Although Korean was in the default list on my phone.

It enables just those in system language but still doesn't have input method of languages.

Has this been tried on a non-stock rom?
I assume you are working with a stock Samsung rom and taking the files from the Japanese rom into the english version, but I may be wrong.
I would like to explore the possibility of doing this from a stock-japanese to an AOSP or cyanogenmod.
What METHOD did you use to identify these files? It would be of great help. I seriously want to use the mazec that came with my original rom into this cyanogenmod that I am using.

I had to untar the tar file, then run sim2img on the system.img and cache.img... then after mounting both, in the cache partition, there is a file recovery/sec_csc.zip. Most of the files I listed above are in the system partition, but the rest need to be extracted from that zip file. Then you can put them in place with a root file manager or adb.... If that sounds like too much work, maybe I can zip the the files up (not a flashable zip) and post them here.
Besides that, I'm a bit surprised by the lack of integration compared to the built in keyboard, especially with the multiwindow (it doesn't detach like the builtin keyboard). Also, you'll have to switch back to the "Samsung Keyboard" to get the sliding input or decent English handwriting recognition. So, I'm not sure if I actually missed anything and it or maybe that's just how it works.
The theming/colors also won't match what you see in the videos - it's more gray like the default keyboard on US Note2, while it appears to be blue in the youtube videos I found.

I'm hoping for an answer to this too. I'm using Assassin ROM and would like to get the Stock Japanese Keyboard and Mazec Handwriting on my Note 2. I wasn't able to crack open the pure stock Docomo image I found online, but I was able to extract most of those files from a zip that Robobob1221 pointed me to. I can't find 3 of the apks in yubimusubi's list:

I'll see for myself soon enough, but wondering if anyone knows up front whether those files are necessary.
Seems most of the files from yubimusubi's post may not be completely necessary, but that may still be a bit premature to say.
I've only copied the fonts, VODB folders, Maruberi, iWnnIME_T0, Mazec apks and the following lib files to my system directory:

So far, Mazec handwriting works (!!), the English keyboard of the Samsung Japanese Keyboard works, numbers keyboard works, and symbols/emoticons work. The only problem I'm having now is getting the Japanese part of the keyboard to work. When I press a key, the keyboard freezes. Gonna try and figure out which of the other libs might help.
But so far it seems that the voiceeditor.so files aren't necessary. But then again, I don't use voice recognition or anything, so I'm not sure.
UPDATE: I didn't want to hijack the thread, so I started one here. I managed to get the hiragana and katakana input working, but I seem to have broken the ability to change kana to kanji and now the kanji. Everything seems to work fine! If you're interested in what files I used, please check the other thread.
I tried this on the non-VZ forum before I found this one and no one was able to help. On my VZ HTC One, in Settings > Language & keybaord > HTC Sense Input > Keyboard selection, there are TONS of languages, even like 5 different Chinese ones but no Japanese If I go into Language & keyboard > Language, I have Japanese there (written as 日本語). So, I can change the system language but for some reason cannot type in it?
I *could* install the Google IME which is what I've been using until I got my One but that is not a solution it's just a workaround. The current keyboard does not allow me to switch IME unless the language is selected in the list within the Sense Input options. So that makes it very cumbersome to switch back and forth. HTC support is no use, they tell me if it's not there then I just can't use it. However I've asked two friends who also speak Japanese and they do have it (one has the JP variant, one does not). I have tried 3 different ROMs so far and have not found it.
So - does anyone know how I can get it? If not, does anyone know how I could possibly extract it from a HTC One J ROM or have a friend package it for me to install?
I'd really appreciate it, this phone is dope and I really don't want to have to give it up nor the Sense keyboard (call me crazy but I absolutely love it).
