So I just watched the live feed from Honk Kong unveiling the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus device. All that I can say is wow! I might be returning my Galaxy S2.... They say it will be in stores by November, so I might have to suck it up until it drops. Does anyone else feel this way?

Not so quick. They still haven't confirmed when for the hspa so I would hold on for a little bit. I don't know why they only mentioned the overseas carrier and no mention of verizon or at&t and t-mobile.
I'll admit that they did add some cool features and all the swiping reminds me of Webos (gee I wonder why). Looks like google is moving in the right direction. I have to say this was more exciting to me than the iphone's release.
I'm may return my SGSII for this even tho I like it, the nexus prime looks amazing.
i agree...there are some cool features but there are also some that are gimmicky like the facial recognition. i know i for one am getting the device as soon as it drops, and i'm giving my gs2 to the wifey. hopefully not long after we can get ICS on the gs2 because with our specs our phones are more than capable of handling it.

They said they wanted it to work with the fastest networks. its just the first lte nexus. Which makes theirs exclusive cause of Verizon only lte network in the U.S.
I don't even think the phone is that exclusive as leaks were saying you can probably buy the gsm versions at bestbuy.
Nope...
I just got the GS2, and for what the Galaxy Nexus offers...not a chance I'm getting it. Everything still points to quite a few limitations:
-No SD Card, built in only (based on rumor and the specifications)
-4.65", serious?! The GS2 on T-Mobile is really pushing the size for me
-21Mbps vs 42Mbps, the difference is noticeable for me and I don't want to go back
-Camera, doesn't seem to be really any better than the GS2
-Still concerned about the rumors regarding the HD AMOLED being PenTile again. I know some people can't see it, but PenTile drives me insane.
To me all the excitement around the presentation was ICS, not the Galaxy Nexus. The GN was actually kind of a letdown for me personally.
Although...ICS didn't really get me too excited either. I'm mostly looking forward to the hardware GPU acceleration for movement and such, although it's a bit concerning that some of the demo movements had a bit of lag.
Just my thoughts on the presentation.
If this phone had ICS running on it right now then none of you would be so quick and eager to say I'm returning my phone for it. They didn't even mention if or when there will be a T-Mobile version. Most likely a T-Mobile version will be see for next year. Cool your jets and relax guys. I'm sure we'll get out turn with ICS. I'm willing to even bet that we'll see a leak build before the Galaxy Nexus even comes out.

When I saw the T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S2...My jaw dropped and the instance I saw it...i made up my mind saying YES! I am getting that phone no matter what!
When I saw the Galaxy Nexus...I just didnt get that feeling...Yea, its a nice phone but i still find my GS2 more hotter in design...hardware is not that different infact our phone has a faster processor...In terms of ICS yes, my jaw dropped and i cant wait for us to get it on the GS2 but i'll be keeping my GS2 until Galaxy S3 comes out with a 5" screen with ICS on it lol

That's what I am saying. I am more excited about ICS than the phone. The specs aren't all that great. I'm sure our phone can run it and sooner than later there will be all types of ports popping up.
Yea the gs2 outdoes the galaxy nexus on many levels. Gs2 with ics = beastmode. Um not giving up my gs2 for that ish

Were most likely getting an update to ics.. that being said our phone spec wise outperforms the galaxy nexus save for screen size..

Thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Our phone is very capable of doing the same exact things as the Galaxy Nexus. The only jaw dropping thing about the Galaxy Nexus is software. Come on guys, don't let it fool you. The only thing I admire about the Galaxy Nexus is its screen. Other than that who cares? I'm just glad that the hardware wasn't too groundbreaking that our phone couldn't keep up. The screen is the highlight as far as hardware is concerned on the GN. we have the same ram, a better front facing cam (2mp on the GS2 vs 1.3mp on the GN), nfc, we both shoot 1080p and we even have a 8mp camera vs the 5mp on the GN which I bet is just as good. MOST IMPORTANTLY WE WILL NOT BE OUT OF DATE OR MISSING ANYTHING! CONSIDER THE NEXT NEXUS DEVICE (the one after the Galaxy Nexus) OUR OFFICIAL UPGRADE PHONE.

It rips off cyanogenmod, miui, sense and touchwiz. Also the 1.5 snap dragon is only faster if all you care about is a number on a spec sheet. It's actually a little slower than the 1.2 exynos.
As for aesthetics I like the gn. And from what I've read it will have all the bands so mayhaps ill get it off contract. Not sure yet.

True, but the Galaxy Nexus doesn't use the 1.2 exynos, it uses a Texas instruments 1.2ghz.
I was more intrigued by the ICS stuff more than the galaxy nexus. The screen resolution would be nice, but I don't think I can go any larger than the 4.5" GS2 screen....

had mine for about 2 weeks and it is a love hate. love the screen, hate the battery. love the possibility (development/ics), hate the current reality.
my wife got skyrocket and comparing the two, nitro screen wins hands down! clear crisp and realistic colors. sgs2sr is much smoother software wise and battery is what you qould expect, full day with lite use. nitro get 8 hours lite use.
after a few days i was ready to switch to skyrocket... but i am going to hang with it. the negatives are not great enough to give up this screen. plus skyrocket does not feel as good in the hand.
that probably doesnt help much... if you can go look at both.

No one knows yet as it is still waiting for the CWM to be built, if you feel you can wait for the custom ROMs, CWM etc then get one if you wish, or if you need something right away then the SGSII is the other road to travel. There are several posts about your question, for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390399
I needed a new phone after my Atrix 4G bluetooth/wifi chip broke down. The real choices were really iPhone 4S, Skyrocket, HTC Vivid and LG Nitro. One look at iPhone screen and it was out. It almost seems like a kid toy. I had Skyrocket for a week and I returned for few reasons. I read a lot and the screen was washed out in comparison to the original S2 that my wife has. I have a little kid and I take a lot of pics. Skyrocket camera always produced pics that were a little out of focus. The third strike was that Skyrocket audio produced a lot of hissing through the headphones. Fourth, I was not so convinced that xda scene would embrace Skyrocket like they did with the European ver of S2. This phone was released in the US 6 months too late. Vivid was out just simply it felt like holding a soap box. Now Nitro HD. Screen for reading is simply amazing. After rooting, hard reset, GO Launcher I can get to the performance and look I need. I like how the phone is feels in my hand. The battery is a problem and I would not chose this phone if I was still travelling too much but with a combination of a spare battery and a car charger I focus more on enjoying the phone without busting a sweat. The baterry life still seems better than EVO 4G. If you need to stick with this phone for the next two years I would wait for something like 4.5 inch 720p quad core Tegra 3, 2 gb RAM, LTE, 2.2f dual flash 12mp marvel that will come out closer to the mid year. If you need a phone for 6-9 months this phone will hold you over just fine. Just dont expect a lot of mods. If this phone will get a support it will be closer to the level of Atrix.

Lastly Skyrocket doesn't have Gorilla Glass. Nitro HD does.

Cool. I've read horrible reviews about the battery. How has it been for you? The different between the 2 screens doesn't bother me.

I have been getting about 12 hours with moderate use now. The battery has improved over the course of first 2 weeks of owner ship with repeated charges. I am talking about LTE, GPS, BT on all the time. When I say moderate probably 30 min calls, 20 sms, 1 hour of screen time browsing and stuff.
This is honestly the best phone I have used. Screen is a beauty. Everything just works. I used GPS on a recent west coast trip which involved at least 5 hours of GPS use. It was dead on. I can lock in the middle of a grocery store. Unfortunately the battery life isn't great. I rate it as mediocre. When I expect to be out for a long time, I switch to my Inspire 4G.
Also there is a stigma associated with LG brand.
The dev support is to be determined. Good thing is that this is a flagship model and there are different international versions available to broaden the hopes of more international dev support.
If you were to pick between the current AT&T LTE lineup, I would definitely recommend Nitro HD. I think if you wait another month or so, the Samsung Galaxy Note or the Sony's rumored 720p phone may get released. Again just speculations.
I agree this is probably the fastest GPS lock that I have ever seen.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda premium
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this device to anyone looking for a flagship smartphone. Maybe not ideal for the road warrior running around searching for an LTE signal with the screen on playing an HD game but that is more about the battery than the phone.
And unfortunately, any leading-edge phone like this is going to have battery issues simply because battery tech has not kept up with the blistering pace these devices are moving forward. Now if these devices ran on petrol, WOW!
it's going to be a few years before batteries catch up to these devices. So it will be much much worse with the new quad-core smartphones that are poised on the horizon.
With a very heavy use, screen on 100%, browsing, LTE about 4.5 hours.

Yes to clairify... I would highly recommend this device, especially over skyrocket. Put the two screens side by side and you will be 100% sold! After watching 720p movies/anime I am so in love with this screen. LTE is incredible too. Yesterday I was getting 14Mbps up AND down! I have hit 20s and 30s consistently.
A little laggy, yes. Battery hog, hell yes. My hope is both of those are addressed by ICS and/or the XDA Dev community !
And yes, the battery life does sucks! Worst I have ever seen since I ran Android from my SD card on my HD2. Charger at desk and charger in car is required - or one of those portable chargers... something cuz you will not make it thru the day.
Actually as oppose to original gs2, skyrocket is unable to play mkv smoothly. There is a lot of threads about that in the divx forum.
Nitro HD on the other hand handles them very well through the stock player.

Hey XDA folks,
So now that we know that the Evo LTE is coming... are you guys making the switch to HTC or staying with Sammy on the Galaxy Nexus or the next SGS3?
I myself find myself leaning more towards the Galaxy Nexus but it HAS to be LTE, if not I am going with the Evo.
The Galaxy Nexus is an LTE phone, if that is what is the only thing that is making you indecisive.

Its not the only reason why, updates, better perfomance ( as reviewed by Phone Arena to the HTC One X)smoother software, expandable memory, no hardware buttons, development supoort, and its Google's baby.

To be honest, I've had HTC phones, and while they do work, they always have rather bad battery life.
EVO's got it's huge development team behind it (you wont be without something to flash) and it's going to be better as far as LTE connection due to it's ability to connect to the 800(900?) mhz band of Sprint's LTE.
The Gnex is probably going to be better with battery performance, despite it's battery size being only 1850, as compared to it's 2000 mAh competitor (EVO LTE). But since it's AOSP, it's not going to have a battery drain skin such as sense running.
The other thing to consider is that the gNex has been out for awhile, and we're late getting it. In 6-7 months from now, the next Nexus will be announced and we'll be stuck with our phones for 2 years (unless you've some way to get new phones for affordable prices).
I prefer stability over performance and such. I think the gNex screen is much better because it's Amoled, so I'd choose the gNex.
hope these helps you decide...

Well said!
As for waiting another 6-7 months for the next gen Nexus... it'll be longer. Simply put Sprint has never received first dibs on the nexus device. I say it'll be At&t who gets the next one first although I would love for all 4 carriers to get it at the same time.
As for being stuck for 2 years with the same phone..nah I dont beleieve in that, I always find a way to get the newest without paying full price ( Craigslist) or I just sell my phone and use that money towards a used but like new phone on there as well. Thats not the issue with me LoL.
I also am leaning towards the Nexus now simply because you made a great point, the fact that sense is still running will use more battery.
I'm going to jump ship to the Evo LTE simply because I'm an Evo fanboy. Love HTC sense. Only reason I got this phone is because of the bigger screen but now that they finally gave the Evo a bigger screen I'm going back.

See I'm not so sure I'm not a fan of the 16:9 screen ratio on phones. The evo 4g lte looks like the screen was stretched vertically and looks really narrow. Is 16:9 going to be the new standard? I love the width of my et4g and hope the gs3 is similar

UPDATE I just came back from the Verizon store ... I went to just see the Galaxy Nexus in person... and I was not impressed. It feels too much like my ET4G, and not that thats a bad thing. I am just ready for a change! I though maybe I would love it in person but I left there feeling my ET4G was a BETTER phone.
Come May 26th Hello Evo LTE!!
Neither, by the time Sprint LTE is a real working network there will be better options. I will probably be due for my upgrade by then. Also the Nexus isn't really an upgrade from S2 just a variation.
I'm not sure about that phonearena writeup...
Both Phil Nickinson and Myriam Joire are head over heels for the One X. They claim that the screen is nicer (by a landslide), the camera blows the Nexus one away (Not much of a stretch, my Epic Touch camera blows the Nexus camera away), and that Sense is very light and very nice.
Of course, there's the battery... that's the only thing holding me back from a full on geekgasm at this point over the HTC.
I'm going to wait until I can look at both of them side by side and make my own decision.

I think thats why I am going with th Evo
Android Central recently had an article about the HTC One X's battery life. While I know there are differences between both the One X and the EVO LTE, I believe it would be a good reference point. Although the One X doesn't have the LTE support yet in the states, those screen shots of the battery lasting 17+hours with as much as 22% left to go, has to get you a little bit excited. Especially because the One X has a smaller battery compared to the EVO LTE. Granted, whenever the LTE network is up and running in your area with you running it on the phone, the life will obviously go down. But still, I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

Very good point. I loved the screen size on my evo 4g but the screen on the evo 3d was a downgrade ratio wise. The screen was sharper but I often made spelling errors because of the screen being more narrow. I'm hoping the bigger size makes up for that on the evo lte. I think it really comes down to what you like best. Stock ics and the latest os or sense and the great hardware. I go in to the evo lte knowing that I'm not going to get constant os updates but I'm OK with that because of the huge dev team behind the evo.

I hope so too! The first Evo got HUGE dev support compared to the Evo 3D, but then again this Evo One should outsell the 3D, not sure if it will beat the Original Evo.
I HATE Sense. But, Id still get the 4G LTE due to its MUCH better hardware. It'll just suck waiting on AOSP to hit the EVO, but it'll be worth it 2 years down the line.
The battery life arguement is invalid. You own a nexus. The updates are invalid. Google clearly hasn't cared about it like they used to.
I the nexus good...yes. absolutely. It will always be a fantastic phone. But the Evo lte will also be a great phone. The battery life can't get /be worse than a nexus...and if it releases w 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 of can't be worse on updates. Cdma nexus has had...1? Not hating. Just pointing out pure facts. The nexus is a great pure aosp phone. But there are also other great phones to consider if you are being locked into contracts

Thats because it is... Galaxy Nexus performance leaves something to be desired coming from this beastly exynos powered phone. I do love a lot of the features the Nexus has to offer though...
Just curious what everyone things i should retire my Inc for?
So far i'm thinking the Inc 4g, Slightly slower CPU, but higher IPC and LTE on chip are big selling points. Unless there is a Rezound 2 coming out this winter.
What do you guys think?
I'd go for the Galaxy S III, myself. It has all the specs you'll need (Snapdragon S4, LTE, HD screen) and looks like it'll be awesome for rooting and ROM-ing. When my upgrade rolls around, I'm going with the S3. HTC makes great phones, but the S# looks to be the best on Verizon (at least when it drops).
If it wasn't for the amazing camera and HTC people app, i would jump off of HTC, however, i keep all my company contacts in gmail, and personal synced to my phone with HTC sync, And stock android's contact app doesn't let me turn off just one gmail (at lest as for 2.5) If i recall correctly it doesn't play well with Facebook contacts. So id have multiple.
I know, i'm picky
Dinc 4g or sgs3 should be everyone on the og Dinc's predicament at the moment...
Dinc 4g will have a lower res/smaller screen, underclocked s4, and maybe even a smaller dev community because all the delays in getting to the consumer.
Sgs3 will have a bigger screen, full 1.5 dual core s4, and 2gb of ram compared to dinc 4g's 1 gb.
But right now it seems that the most important thing to those with multiple smartphones on their plan is to upgrade before June 28th, which is when the shared plans are going to kick in.

At this point wait. Of course that's what I'm doing so of course I feel that way.
I WAS going to get a SGS3 (especially after the tear down showed the iPhone 4s camera in it)... but when I picked one up in my hand.. it felt huge. I like to swype with one hand.. and.. I have big hands and my thumb felt stretched.
When I did the math on how much extra buying outright costs ($370... a new phone has a $200 price PLUS the $30 upgrade fee.. while outright is $600... so only $370 more) Over the course of a 2 year contract... its better to just buy the phone outright and keep your unlimited data.
Seeing how they are rolling out Quad Core with LTE in Korea.. where we haven't seen that yet.. they already passed that hurdle.. I'd wait till we see it here... (and forgetting that it's apple and iphone... they are supposedly doing it as well: http://www.appleinsider.com/article...e_rumored_to_feature_quad_core_processor.html )
You already passed the point of renewing with unlimited... waiting a bit longer won't kill you.
SGIII now, 4G LTE if the price drops

Just curious what everyone things i should retire my Inc for?
So far i'm thinking the Inc 4g, Slightly slower CPU, but higher IPC and LTE on chip are big selling points. Unless there is a Rezound 2 coming out this winter.
What do you guys think?

I would have considered the 4G LTE except that (1) it came out too late to lock in 2 more years of unlimited data and (2) it is overpriced for what you get.
So I locked in my SGIII back in June.
It arrives Monday.
However, if you don't want to pay big bucks I would wait a month or two to see if the DInc 4G LTE goes on sale on Amazon, Wirefly, Radio Shack or even Big Red itself. My target price would be $99.
test
I'm gonna test out the dinc 4 and SG3 before I make a decision. My upgrades not ready til Aug so it'll give me plenty of time to figure out which one feels nicest and behaves better. But I'm leaning towards the SG3 due the record of Samsung vs HTC.
I do like the size of the new incredible.. but the chip is a slightly slower one.. but the biggie is that the screen on it is fairly low quality compared to all the new ones out there.
also the sgs3 has the same camera as the iPhone 4s... which is currently the best on the market for a cell phone camera.
galaxy s III looks like a good phone. The more articles I read on it the more I want to get it.My hands are huge so a bigger phone would be great compared to the incredible 4g

I have the Rezound, coming from the Inc in December, and I love it but I just ran a ROM from the latest Inc and Sense 4 blends so much better with ICS then Sense 3.6 does (I'm on the latest ICS Leak). I would definitely get that Inc...There will ALWAYS be something bigger and better a few months off...

I would wait... I was a hardcore droid for 3 years then I got a iPhone 4 and my opinion iOS 6 beta is more stable. iPhone 5 or galaxy S3 since by courts it's copied a lot of apples patents. Lol Samsung has to give apple 8%+ of the sales of this phone. Sucks with updating your phone that we lose unlimited data unless you buy at retail price without contract.

Hahahah that's was a good joke

Wouldn't the Galaxy Nexus 2 be made by Samsung not HTC?
I feel like phones are in a transitional phase right now. Nothing coming out in the near future is going to be a game changer. I'm going to wait until the quad S4 with the A15 equivalent comes out. Although, right now I'm completely happy with my Dinc running Jellybean, so I'm in no hurry.
Razor m might be a good choice
Galaxy Note 2
The Galaxy Note 2 is rumored to be coming to all four US carriers, so that would be an option as well.
I didn't want to update to the S3 b/c they made it a dual core phone in America. So I'm waiting for a quad core or better upgrade to the GalaxyS2.
get the note 2! it's quad core.
Note 2 will be next phone
Prolly the s4 but ill play the note 2 to see if I like it.

I agree with you, the S3 is a nice phone but not a huge upgrade from this phone unless you are in one of those few areas with lte already. Note2 is too big for me. I think the Nokia Windows 8 phones are nice, wonder if they will go Android in the future as well. Heck Windows 8 may end up being awesome. Android can be frustrating at times.
I think I'll be speaking for a lot of people in a wimax market / non wimax market without network vision coming in till next year...
Not upgrading until LTE + NV upgrades improve data speeds.
SO probably not till the S4 or any other highly competitive / powerful phone next summer when network vision is going to hit or will hit the majority of the sprint network along with 800mhz + clearwire TD LTE 2.5-2.6ghz starting to become active.
I'll skip the S3 since I really don't see much of a Diff from my S2 to warrant an upgrade at this time. Bring on the S4!!! LOL
I'll probably wait til the s4. The feature I'm waiting for the most is the camera. I want faster focus and burst shot, and last but certainly not least, a lens that is MUCH better in low light. It has to be equal or better than the iphone 5's.
I agree, buying a LTE phone that doesn't support 800mhz LTE band is pretty dumb.

Ill be either going with the note 2 or the LG optimus g(next nexus) the optimus on sprint is 4.7" true HD IPS screen with 1280x768 resolution snapdragon s4 pro 1.5ghz quad core, 2gb ram, 13mp rear cam, 1.3mp ffc, 2100mah battery. Specs are close to the note 2 minus the smaller screen and the note 2 has a 3100mah battery, otherwise the specs are pretty close. Google's new nexus affiliate program looks like we may have a plethora of nexus phones to choose from, they just have to meet minimum hardware requirements and have any 3rd party UIs or apps as a separate install thru a theme manager, so it ships with aosp and then u can choose to add sense, TWiz, blur etc.

I'm gonna get the next nexus, just easier to get solid updates like klp and whatever dessert starts with the letter L.

The nexus is apparently shipping on android 4.2, however it is still unknown if 4.2 is a JellyBean update or if it will be Key Lime Pie, as quickly after JB was released to the nexus release I'm guessing 4.2 is going to just be an update to JB to add the stylus function and a few other new functions to aosp that were previously manufacturer specific(included in 3rd party UIs) to allow for the nexus affiliate program to move forward and the UIs just needing the launcher/Widgets/apps installed instead of an entire rom needing to be flashed through the system manager

There are rumors that around 25 nexus branded devices from the new program will be available between now and q1 of 2013, some phones, some tablets and some media devices. I'm hoping they make a nexus version of the note 2 since it meets the spec requirements it would only need an aosp version to qualify for the nexus branding

this, exactly.
i get a new device every year (at a minimum), as a rule. i was an htc fan for some time, but (coming from the EVO) the evo3d just did not impress at all, so jumped to sammy this year, with a bit of hesitation. no real regrets so far...
but so far this year, the GS3 seems a nice bump, but not a true step forward.
the HTC X series seems nice (for HW reasons), as a possibility, or possibly the Note 2.
but nothing i've seen in the last few months really grabs my balls and demands attention.

You sound like me. I dropped that Evo3d ASAP and got a GS2 though. Prior to that I had an Evo 4g Touch pro 2, Touch Pro, Mogul, Apache me and HTC went way back, but the Sprint S2 killed that love in a blink of an eye. Straight Talk and my S3 killed my love for Sprint....Pending LTE deployment in my neck of the woods. I am in love with this S3. At first I had bad experiences with the battery life, but after I installed the XDA battery life fix I get battery well over 10 hours and in emergency situations I have seen it get over a day worth of battery life with the screen using 3 hours of that time.
Im definitely waiting on the S4. I just hope that the battery life will match my current device the s3. Hoping there is a15 quad core upgraded GFX and the jaw dropping 3gb of ram. Only thing I am worried about is flash compatibility. That was one of my main reasons
I'm waiting on something noticeably better when it comes to specs and build quality. My contract was up 2 months ago, but theirs nothing out there worthy of upgrading to. The Optimus G looks good spec wise, but the build quality is questionable. I'm hoping HTC gets their act together and continues improving their uni body designs.
