Hey Guys,
I want to try out cyanogenmod 7.1 on my xperia play. I still have a locked bootloader but clockwordmod recovery is already installed, so if something goes wrong, i am able to go back to my stock 2.3.4 rom. I think for cyanogen mod working right, i have to flash the doomkernel too? So what will happen if i unlock the bootloader, flash a custom kernel and a custom Rom and then apply the backup, i created before? Will i go back to my stock rom, stock kernel etc? I cant find an answer for this :/ sorry for Bad english, im from germany

Despite the fact that you have recovery, you can't use cyanogenmod on a locked bootloader. Cyanogenmod requires a kernel that is different from stock, and you can't flash a kernel on a locked bootloader.

Yes, i know about that. My question is, if i unlock my bootloader, flash a custom kernel, Flash cyanogenmod and THEN use clockwordmod recovery to apply my nandroid Backup, that i createt, before unlocking the bootloader and flashing all These things, will this work? So im back at my stock rom and stock kernel? I really want to try out cyanogenmod, but i want the option to go back to stock, if something is Not the way, i imagined. And i dont know, if the kernel is included in a nandroidbackup. Furthermore, i dont know if a Backup, created with an locked bootloader will work on a device with an unlocked bootloader too?

Sorry, I guess I didn't read your post in its entirety.
The short of it is yes, you can use the nandroid of a locked on an unlocked phone. The nandroid won't backup nor restore the kernel, that must be flashed separately. The kernel is such a small filesize, and the command is easy enough that it shouldn't be a problem. That is, unless you wanted to change kernels while away from a computer.

Thank you, this was really helpful to me so i have to download the stock kernel, if i want everything as it was before cyanogenmod. But thats not the Problem, i guess. I think i'm going to try it out after work, thank you for your fast answers

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't believe there are any stock kernels available. You can use an .ftf file with flashtool, as that sets everything to stock, then restore a nandroid after reinstalling recovery.

If you restore a nandroid from a stock ROM after flashing the cyanogen kernel your phone won't boot.
You would need to go back to the stock kernel before restoring. Problem is, you don't have a recovery in the stock kernel.
You could revert using flashtool, by flashing stock, then rooting, then install the locked version cwm, then restore.
Or after unlocking the bootloader before even trying cyanogen, flash DooMKernel, and make a backup through the kernel recovery. Then you can try cwm, and if you don't like it, flash DooMKernel again and restore.

With x10 we had a recovery menu where we cud try new roms and back up our current roms and go back to the backed up ones. Is this possible with arc? My phone has opened bootloader but I only ever seemed to access the recovery when trying out cm7.0 and after it was gone when flashing stock rom back.
Yes just flash the doomlord kernel and you will get recovery

then you will have to connect it to a pc/laptop each time to boot into it via fastboot.
So I would need to run the kernal as boot?
Ok, I have the play, r800ra, i flashed the r800a stock modified rom to it. Now I am assuming from everything I have read since I have a locked bootloader there is no possible way for me to get to cm7. I cant flash a custom kernal or anything like that. I have to stick to the stock roms. Or can I flash custom kernals and then flash custom roms? Any help is appreciated.

With a locked bootloader,you can't flash anything.How did you even flash the modified ROM anyway?
Anyway,its best if you flash kernels,then the ROMs,in my opinion.

I just used that flash utitlty and flashed the rom I downloaded. Gave me the erickson generic rom.

Hmm I couldn't flash anything when my bootloader was locked so I just had to use SEMC for stock updates and with a locked bootloader I couldn't do anything else but root.

Hi, I have a unbranded, unlocked Arc S, running ICS, and I want to flash the 4.04 image, which comes as a CWM zip.
Everything is currently stock but rooted.
The 4.04 update is a ZIP (rather than a FTF), so I think I need CWM installed to flash the update. I can't find anything that tells me how.
I found a easy installer, but it categorically says don't use it with ICS.

Try CWM auto-installer, you can find it in Play Store and it worked to me.
Look in the dev section for the stock ics kernel with cwm is the simplest way.

Use fastboot to boot either a custom kernel like ArcNight or DoomKernel, or cobratos modded stock. They contain cwm, on boot repeatedly press any of the h/w keys to enter cwm and flash the zip on the sdcard.

I only ever found the old beta kernel for ICS, not the final one. Got a link?
I tried the auto CWM installer, and yes it did install onto stock ICS, and I managed to install the 4.04 ZIP, but now it just hangs on the Sony startup screen.
Any advice on how to get back to something that works?
Sorry I haven't looked at that Rom as it's a dev Rom thats been ported, before installing that Rom did you make a cwm backup? Otherwise you install another Rom.

Before flashing a ics rom in zip format you need to flash a complete ics (ftf file) via flashtool /pc companion /seus.

Nothing other than losing warranty. The first thing i did was unlock the bootloader after i got my phone.
You can also relock it back. Check the forum for guides on how to do that.
Please refrain from doing this stuff if you are not comfortable with tinkering your phone.
It is a relatively simple task though.

What do you mean by restore? If you mean going back to your previous rom, you have nandroid backups for that.
what do you mean by "restore" ? if you have CWM and have made a backup of your previous ROM then yes you can go back to it
If you are thinking of "reseting" and have installed a custom ROM you need to download the stock ROM for your phone and flash it through CWM
yes sir. i mean resetting it back to its original stock ics rom. pc companion cannot recognize my arc s anymore. im running MIUI Final for arc s. so i will download the stock ics rom and flash it via cwm? how about my kernel? do i need to reset factory settings and erase everything after flashing the stock ics rom?

Just flash any of the custom ics roms available. If you want to flash the stock ICS rom, use flashtool for it. You will lose all data.
custom kernels can be used for OC, better performance etc. so really you dont need the stock kernel, and yes download the stock ICS ROM and before you flash it through CWM do a "Wipe data/factory reset" and "Wipe cache partition" to avoid any problems
Hi, I've had my Xperia play for a few weeks and feel like i want to install a new rom as the default 2.3.4 software is a bit sluggish. Ive already rooted and installed CWM and backed it up. I have a locked bootloader and the first instruction to installing the rom is to install a stock rom, Don't i already have that installed as i haven't installed a custom rom before? Should i just skip this step? Thanks in advance! My Model is R800i and the build is 4.0.2.A.0.42.

it depends on which kernel you want to use.
.42 firmware does not support custom partition layout, so in order to use kernel like Turbo Kernel by CosmicDan or Lupus Kernel by wedgess (both with custom partitions) you'll need to flash .62 firmware or newer, wipe userdata and system and then flash the kernel.
While this isn't needed if you want to use, for example, DoomKernel

I've said you, you should skip this if you don't want to flash any kernel with custom partition layout
But remember that if you remain on stock kernel you cannot flash no other rom than stock based ones
