One issue I have always had with Android is knowing whether or not pressing the back key will take you to a previous menu or close the program. Now that the back button is dynamic, would it be possible to create a mod where the back button turns into an "x" when it will close the program? I think this is something that should be part of ICS, but I also know that modders can do some incredible things.
I wouldn't get your hopes up. Every application is coded differently and it depends on the developer to what function the back button does. I think for this to work, hypothetically, you would need specially designed applications to include this feature.
You could have the button linked to environmental variable that always takes you back home, bypassing any specific app uses, however that would be redundant since you already have a home button. Other than that, I don't think there's another way to do it, definitely not dynamic since its up to the specific App. However, I remember on CM7, there was an option for SMS so that the back button always took you to the inbox, and not just quit, which I miss.
The application controls whether the back button moves you to a previous screen, home screen, or even exits the program.
Edit: Just noticed I repeated what everyone else said
If it were possible to mod Android so that the back button was unable to close apps, I would be very happy. Could this be done?

Don't think of the back button as closing the applications. Think of it more like the button triggering the app to close itself. It's an app specific issue, but not really an issue... Just use the home key!

Just an example using Google Music:
Listening to music, I want to go into the app using the widget or icon on a home screen. Sometimes it goes to the Now Playing screen, other times it will go to the Recent/Artist/Albums view. (Which is a whole 'nother issue I have with Android)
I don't wan't the back button to go back to the home screen, I want the back button to back within the app. If the system can be modded so that the back button never navigates to home, I think that would work for me.

Yeah I have noticed this with Google music. Hopefully Google will update this with a fix but understand it's not an 'android' issue its a apk issue.

i've also experienced some of the other screen issues that others have when the phone is charging, but i have noticed something more specific: w/o any other apps in the multi-task queue, i press vol-up to press play on my current song, and when the song comes on, my back button stops workin. actually all of the soft buttons do this, but after 10 or so seconds, home and search button come back, but back button still unresponsive. Sometimes happens when I have multiple apps going on as well. Kind of an annoyance.
i'm considering going back to the store to check my options, but (even though i don't think i'm qualified to make this distinction) it may be a software issue that may be updated with the connectivity issue on the 16th?

I can confirm this. It happened to me just today. I was using the "Sleep" app made by a buddy of mine. I played a sound from the app and then I hit the back button. It took me into the multitasking view. I literally could not exit the app unless I hit the home button. Afterwards, my back button stopped working but the home and search was still functional.
I let the phone sit for a while and everything started working again. I don't know if this will be addressed in the 16th update but I really hope so.
I also heard that a battery fix is coming as well.
Hello,
I've been using my new note 2 for two weeks now.. and I like it so much
I also used sgs2 and 3 before.
I'm not new to android.. I flashed roms, know every single setting in the device, rooted my sgs2 and tried lots of apps to customize them.
Regarding my issue, I like to set my device to none screen security because I always manually lock it with a press on the lock screen button after I do whatever I want to do with it, and to unlock I always press Home button to get back to where I was immediately without the need to swipe the lock screen.
The problem is when I lock it and there is an app running and then press the home button the screen goes to home default screen and do not just unlock the screen and keep it there where I was last, this was not the case with my sgs2 or sgs3.
If I press the lock screen button instead it does what I want but I prefer to use home button because its much easier.
Its not a big issue but its annoying sometimes because sometimes I get popup notification windows while the phone is locked (whatsapp for example) and I press the home button to see it and instead of just turning on the screen to see the window it goes back to home screen and the popup is gone, or in cases where I'am writing an email or reading something and meanwhile talking to somebody, if the screen gets locked, If I press the home button everything is gone. So I have to switch tasks to open my activity again.
I don't know if this is a jellybean issue or hardware (homebutton).
I know its not a big deal but I would appreciate if somebody can help get around this

It seems to be a jellybean feature no way around unless a mod comes out...
All jellybean roms in Note I had this feature and i remember seeing this thing on SGS III jellybean too
Just install the S Voice app , "voicetalk_NLI.apk".
In S Voice, set "double click active S Voice" will fix the issue.
This actually worked! Thanks
But the problem is that i use another app (home2) to control home button which makes me able to control what app runs when double clicking home or even use a combination of home with back or menu.
Its a very good app if you want to try it.
This leaves me with trying to deal with my original issue tho or just return to old factory setting

thanks man! used to annoy me so much having to open the app again
edit. There's one slight problem, now it lags a bit to return back to the home screen..
So last night, I was in an app and hit the Home button, and the screen kind of 'flashed' but didn't exit the app. Tried it again, same thing. Only way I could get out of the app was to keep hitting the Back button. Powered off my phone, turned it back on, and same thing. Any idea what's going on? I've had the phone for a few months and never had any trouble. Haven't had any recent updates or anything. I am using GoLauncher EX, but I've been using that since day 1 so I don't think that's the source of the problem.
Please help!

No ONE...???
got an air can?? from a distance spray around the button (not sticking the straw in the opening around the button, but close)
Lint could have easily got in there and is causing some issues.
It is a hard button after all and not a soft key

maybe try clearing the data of your launcher under app management menu.
Its not the actual physical home button, its the function its responsible for. Like if I go to an app, and I wanna exit thru the home button, it doesnt do that anymore, it just blinks and stays on the app, or any screen for that matter. I have cleared, reinstalled and everything.
You should try clearing you cache in your custom recovery and if that dosent work try reflashing the rom you are on. Hope this helps.
I just got a HTC10 to upgrade from the M9 I had, and so far, I'm liking it, even with the stock ROM (but rooted with Sprint bloatware frozen), but one thing I haven't been able to figure out is the home/fingerprint button behavior. If I'm at the home screen and I press it, I don't have a huge issue with it bringing up all the screens for me to pick which one I want (but long press for it would be better), but I find it annoying that when I am in an app and press it, it takes be to the screen where I have to select which page I want, rather than to the last one I was on. Is there a way that I am overlooking to change this behavior?

I think you mean the multitask button rather than the home button, and if you double press it it switches back to the previous app.

I think you are correct... but why why should I have to press the button once to get where I need a few more presses to get where I want or press it once plus still need few more presses to get where I want? Is there any way to change this misbehavior?
I guess you could say my annoyance with this (mis)behavior is related to muscle memory... Every other Android phone I've had would take you to your last 'home' page when you pressed the similar button.. This one is (mis)behaving differently from every other phone I've had... It woudl be really nice to change it.
FWIW, I was finally able to change the behavior of the home/multi-function/fingerprint button - by ditching the HTC ROM for LinageOS 14.1. Better battery life, no sprint junk, seems to run better overall and I can actually assign different ringtones or sounds to different contacts. For whatever reason, that option seemed to be absent on the HTC ROM.
I still don't get what behavior you mean? Or do you mean that when you press the home button you are taken to the standard home screen, instead of for example the app drawer or another home screen page? Quite confusing what you mean

Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to lock an app in memory even if I push the back button?
I am locking 2-3 most frequently used apps from the "Recents" menu but that gets washed away when I press the "Back" button after being done with the respective app.
I know the best option would be to start pushing the "Home" button but over the years I developed a habit of pushing the "Back" button several times to go to home or once to close the app and it's very hard to change behavior now.
I'm on NitrogenOS (8.1) if it matters - stock kernel.
Cheers.

Unless the back button is programmed to kill an app, the app should stay in memory. So check the options for the back button and change it.
It is set to close app. Long press for kill. But still does not work.
If I assign to something else, then basic acknowledge functionality does not work...

Check the long press duration and if possible lengthen it. Or assign double tap for kill and none for long press as an experiment and check.
