Anybody else's headphone jack noisy when car charger plugged in? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello all,
Has anybody had any trouble with noise/whine when using their Gnex headphone jack and charger at the same time. It is basically alternator noise as the pitch changes with the speed of the engine. Sucks that I can't use Pandora and charge the phone at the same time because of this.
Is it the phone or the charger that causes this?

This is commonly referred as a "ground loop". There are several things you could try. What I would do is rewire your cigarette lighter so it shares a common ground with the head unit. You could also try another car charger, or putting a noise filter on the cigarette lighters +12v wire.

Spot on. This is especially the case if you're using an aux-in jack on your headunit. Also applies to the FM-transmitter folk too, though not all obviously.
An alternate fix is getting a ground loop isolater (http://www.amazon.com/GROUND-LOOP-ISOLATOR-3-5-APPLICATIONS/dp/B001EAQTRI like this). You can probably find a diagram online if you're handy with electronics (and want a side project) and get the parts at radioshack or something.

Happens to me when using bt streaming as well but only on certain stations. Also the whine starts out low and eventually the pitch goes so high I can no longer hear it.

Car dock

Well, I got the Samsung dock, and as much as I like the E4GT, the dock is terrible. Here's my experience:
1. There's a ton of line noise when the phone is docked but nothing is playing, just like with the Epic. I'm using the OEM charger, but that's not the problem--using the same charger, the Photon's car dock is absolutely silent. Samsung must be using some cheap electronics in this thing, and it's simply horrible. (Sorry for venting, but seriously...)
2. The software isn't nearly as seamless as the Photon's either. First, on the Photon, when you dock an app starts that essentially takes over the home button. That means you can move back and forth between the app and the home screens easily. On the Samsung, it seems like once you leave the Vlingo app to, say start a radio streaming app, you can't get back to the dock mode. At least, not without unplugging/replugging the dock connector, but that's extra wear and tear. If I'm wrong about this, please let me know.
Then, the Photon app allows for 4 custom apps to be assigned. That provides a great deal of flexibility, and again it's easy to go from one app to another and then back to dock mode.
Overall, the Samsung car dock experience is nowhere near the Photon's. Motorola really did a great job with this, and Samsung makes it look like they gave actually using the phone in the car zero thought.
What's everyone else doing to make this experience more usable? I'm still choosing between the Photon and the E4GT, and the car dock definitely is a mark in the Photon's favor.
1) Use bluetooth audio streaming for zero noise. Are you connected by the dock's audio out jack, or the GS2's headphone jack? I noticed better sound with the latter, but using BT is easier and sounds so much better.
2) Ditch Vlingo for CarHome Ultra. Extremely customizable and lots of great features, including up to 18 app shortcuts and auto-switching day/night themes. I love it.
You could make a profile in tasker that recognizes when the phone is plugged into a dock. Or you can make one for when it is rotated in landscape and plugged in. Then, you can enable an app to run, or have a list of apps that you can choose from. This is what I do with my phone and I don't even have a dock. It's awesome how much you can do with tasker!

I'd love to do that, unfortunately my car doesn't have Bluetooth audio. And I'm going from the dock's audio out to my car's AUX in. That's an idea, using the headphone jack, but I hate adding wear and tear.

Thanks again for the tip, that app rocks. In fact, it's better than the Photon's car dock app.
Now all I need to do is find some way to clean up the line noise and I'll be a happy camper.
Go to radioshack. Ask them for a ferrite core. Should be a ring of "ferrite" or iron. Make sure it's big enough to put the plug on your audio cable through. Push it through and wrap it around a few times and see if that helps. Also, running a separate hot lead and ground from your car battery to the cigarette plug you use should help. But the ferrite core should be easier/cheaper

call audio routing
Has anyone else been able to get call audio to route to the output on the dock? media audio comes out the port so I can hear that on my cars speakers but when I make a call it comes out of the phone speaker....
So, I've tried a variety of power adapters, USB cables, and audio cables, and the line noise remains. I'm going to try the ferrite core around the audio cable, but I don't think that's the issue--if you unplug the unit from power, the line noise disappears. So, I think it's just bad circuitry in the dock.
One would think that Samsung would have received complaints about this with the Epic dock (at least) and would have fixed it. Motorola managed to make a dock with excellent sound quality and zero noise, so it's certainly possible.
Otherwise, the E4GT is decent in the car with that Carhome Ultra app. Although, that doesn't really help with my decision between the E4GT and Photon, because with the Photon I could have the same dock app but also outstanding audio quality.
I can only assume the noise you are hearing is due to a Ground Loop/Hum.
It has to do with the fact that your power source is grounded to a different point than the stereo/speakers. the hum you hear is the difference in voltage's between the 2 grounds being represented as noise in the line.
for instance. I recently installed a new head unit in my truck, the unit has an AUX in and a USB port. If i plug my E4GT aux cable into the stereo and plug the USB charger into the port on the stereo - NO Noise. However, if i plug the phone to charge in another outlet (say, the cig lighter) then there is Line Noise everytime. The same principle applies when plugging your phone audio jack into any electronics.
Hope this helps shed a little light on the noize.

I hear you, except that I have two different docks that display entirely different behavior. Actually, I have two docks from the same manufacturer (Samsung, for the Epic and the Epic Touch) that have significant line noise, and one (Motorola) that does not. Note that these are all plugged into exactly the same power adapter and outlet and using the same USB and audio cables.
So, you'd need to account for the fact that the Motorola signal is perfectly clean in precisely the same circumstances while the Samsung's signal isn't.
I believe every word of it.
From what I know about Ground Loop Hum there are many weak links in the chain, and certainly some products behave better than others. The problem is still most likely the Ground.
One possibility would be that the manufacturer of the Moto Dock has included an isolator in the power supply line (or even in the audio supply line), and the manufacturer for the Sammys didnt.
My experience in this subject is with my Laptop/DJ setup making noise when plugged into audio equipment. when the power supply was plugged into the lappy, 60hz hum. Unplug it and it goes away. More than likely the problem was inside the computer or the power supply was just poorly manufactured as other models may not have the Hum. In my case i purchased a small isolater solved the problem. It may be possible to find one for a 12v car electrical system.

I actually hooked up an old RadioShack groundloop isolator to the AUX cable, and it got rid of the hum.
Something like this should work fine: http://www.amazon.com/GROUND-LOOP-I...QTRI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322958491&sr=8-2

Well, the salient point is that Samsung uses inferior components. It's possible to make a device that doesn't suffer from the problem, as Motorola has shown.

most times I've had line noise, be it from improper grounding or from cellular interference (namely from ground issues) the ferrite core fixed it. If it doesn't, the power isolation will. The reason the USB Ports on the head unit doesn't create line noiseis because it has isolation circuitry built in. The core is cheap. If that doesn't work, isolate power.

Okay, in the latest saga with the Samsung car dock, I noticed this morning that when I received a Bluetooth phone call, the TuneIn Radio audio I was playing didn't stop. Or, rather, it did stop once the stream buffer ran out, because I was on 3G and of course 3G data isn't available during calls.
Is this really how the Samsung dock works, that audio doesn't give way to Bluetooth calls? Or is that perhaps the CarHome Ultra app?
Still a bit frustrated with this aspect of the Epic Touch. The Photon's car dock works perfectly, including muting audio while on a Bluetooth call.
Grrr. I know, I know, if I like the Photon's car dock so much, why I don't I just stick with that phone... But seriously, Samsung, how hard is it to get this right?

I wonder if it might be the phone or the application. When listening to Sirius/XM radio without a dock, and I get a phone call, the radio keeps blasting away.
You don't stick with that phone because this one is superior in every other way. Its a minor issue. Why would you even have the aux input selected when there is no music playing? I have the noise too so I get it but ...yeah I just change the input when I don't need it.

Weird sound when plugged in and listening through AUX

I was using pandora and google music last night in my car through the aux cable going into my pioneer car deck and it sounded great, even though i had a aux splitter going to my ipod and one going to the galaxy nexus.. but as soon as i plugged in my phone to my new Motorola P513 car charger (rated at 950a), a low but noticeable sound came through my speakers .. is this happening to anyone else? do you think this problem will be fixed when i buy the car dock with the 3 pins? thank you
it will be interference from the power circuit. It may improve with the proper 3 pin system but no most micro USB chargers have given me similar problems on multiple devices.

another phone charger question though.. will my 950mA car charger cause problems for my battery chargering accessory that says DC 5.0V 1A, DC 5.0V 500mA. or does that not matter?
Same here... but,
You might notice, I sure did, that when the GPS is being used it causes it or makes it worse. If it is running (GPS) it will make noise and if it is the active screen/program, it is at its worst.
Definitely need a solution for this... mine is really bad and makes it unusable.

USB power conditioning in the car?

Hi all!
I have horrible whining noise when charging my phone in the car. Have tried a few chargers and even power converter, nothing helps.
I wonder if one may know what to do in such situation!
Any help or idea will be greatly appreciated because I'm out of my own. Last thing to try is take car to a dealership and check all wiring and grounding, but it will be costly.
By the way car is RAV-4 06 and phone Vz galaxy nexus.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Can you clarify? Where is the whining coming from?
If it is coming from the electronics (for example, the charger is whining) then you have a bad capacitor in your charger, and it woudl be best to replace it, soon.
If the you are using the phone to play your music, and the whining is coming from the speakers of the car, but only when connected to the charger, then that is another common issue, caused by a ground loop. The ground on your phone's headset jack is not the same as on the jack on your stereo.
To fix that, you need a "ground loop isolator 3.5mm" (search for those terms, without the quotes, on Google, and you'll find what you need. It will plug in between the headphone jack on your phone, and the input jack on your stereo.
It is the second.
Thanks a lot! I even didn't know about these differences. Always thought that such a simple thing as audio jack is a standard.

static noise when plugged in car

when i plug my phone into my car to play music its fine. when i use my car charger and play music at the same time tis fine but the second the music stop i hear a static noise from my speakers (which is attached to my galaxy)
this static noise is an imitation of whatever my car is doing at that moment (if im reving the engine the static will resemble the revs, same with turn signals)
anyone else experiencing this problem?
It's feedback from the car electrical system. Usually a bad alternator ground or corroded battery cables, or even the cables going to the starter.

I'm assuming it isn't a stock deck? Check your ground and of possible try a new location.

On my i747m, I could not use the USB port to listen to music while I was charging via cigarette lighter. There is a definite design flaw. I bought an Ibolt dock and am not able to use it the way it is intended. Even when I wired it myself from scratch (I'm a sound tech) it failed.
Not only does it make white noise and static between songs, but there is some kind of GATE that kicks in 1 or 2 secs after any music pause....it cuts the noise in half but it still remains...and the act of cutting, is an irritant in itself. Further more, even when your playing music, the NOISE is fighting for sonic real estate. I can hear it. I am trained.
So for me, I am running the audio out of the headphone jack. It's 98% better but still not 100%. I don't get the classic REV issue...which has to do with grounding and/or cable shielding. But, if I was you, I would go to The Source store and pick up a Ground Isolator. They have one specific for car issues like yours.
Its a ground loop.

It MIGHT... be a ground loop.
It might NOT.
Read my post #7.
If your using USB audio, there is an internal design flaw NOISE issue independent from any GROUND issues. (at least with my i747m) I can reproduce the machine like noise in the car, on a desk dock, on a separate stereo system. The Ground Loop isolator did not help my issue but it's worth trying if you get the hum/car interference noise from usb and/or headphones.

[Q] Finicky connection with car audio jack

*Edit:*
Just so those who just joined in this converstation don't get too dragged into it, I've resolved this issue simply by buying what is called a ground loop noise isolator adapter. It's main purpose is to remove the static and whining noise you hear from your speakers when you plug your phone to the car charger while connected to the speakers. But at the same time, it is keeping the signal from the aux cable of your car on "hot" so that when you plug in the phone, the phone immediately picks up the aux signal and stays connected. I basically killed two birds with one stone by getting the adapter. Here is the adapter I purchased:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001EAQTRI
I will make it clear here that this aux connectivity problem has nothing to do with how cheap or expensive your aux cable is. You can use the most expensive cable or the cheapest penny cable out there and if the problem exists between your phone and your car's aux, then it won't resolve it. Either change your car's head unit (which is a stupid thing to do) or simply get the adapter. Don't return the phone over this problem, its just a dumb move. The phone is amazing. LG will have a patch for it or someone will make a ROM that tackles the problem.
*end edit*
Hello all,
was wondering if anyone else with the G3 (not sure if it matters, but I have the 851 variant) is having a hard time getting their phone working with the audio jack coming from their car. I drive a 2007 Scion tC and never had any problem of weird issues connecting any of my previous phones (Moto Atrix 4G, LG Nitro HD, GSIII, Nexus 5 just to name a few) to the audio jack in my car. I'll just plug it in and it connects just fine.
But for some odd reason, the G3 is having tons of issues. When I plug in the audio jack to the phone, I see the audio jack icon pop up up top next to the clock, but then some times it will just disappear on its own. Other times, it will stay there, but when I play a media, may it be music, or video from any app, the sound will play out of the speaker on the phone and not the car speakers. Unplugging it while the media is playing and replugging it again will not change anything, but if I stop the media playback, unplug it and then plug it back in, and the icon reappears and then I tap play immediately, the audio will then come out from the car speakers. Some times I have to do this multiple times to finally get it to work.
The strangest thing is, this does not happen if I plug anything else to the G3, such as a headset or an external speaker or any other devices, only in my car. It even works fine in any other car as far as I know. I've tried different audio cables in my car but it still does the same thing, so it doesn't seem to be the cable.
Is there some kind of sensor in the phone that detects connectivity of the phone to another device? I realize that when I plug in the phone to my car, the car speakers makes a couple of whining noises before it goes quiet, sort of sending or receiving a signal from the phone.
Can anybody please help me? I want to say that the phone is defective, but I can't proof so since it works just fine with any other devices. Could it be the head unit in my car is incompatible with the phone? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

That was my trick initially but eventually even that didn't work. Someone mentioned to try plugging in a charger first and then plug in the aux cable and that worked. But now I bought a ground loop noise isolator and that has resolved the problem completely. I was not saying that. If you use Griffen cable at 14 . or monster cable at 20. Or rocketfish at 18. They all work the same. Just not buying that it is a cable issue. Hardware more like it. I actually just order a eBay cable for .99 cents to prove this totally wrong.
This has nothing to do with cables. I literally tried over 6 different cables and nothing worked between my phone and my car's aux port. Yet I used the same cables in my friend's car (old Nissan sentra) that has an aux port and they all worked fine with the phone. Also used a cassette aux adapter kit in my gf's sister's old SUV and it works fine with it.
This is purely hardware compatibility issue. Some head unit's aux port stays hot at all times, others don't. Some probably reacts faster than others and connects immediately so the phone doesn't drop connectivity before engaging. Again, like I've mentioned, you can either circumvent the issue by using the "charge phone first then plug in aux cable" trick, or simply buy a ground loop isolator adapter which keeps the connection hot. LG will fix the problem eventually. It was an annoyance, but a minor one, and i can't be any happier with this phone despite of the connection issue.

Hey guys and gals,
can you guys all do me a favor and head to my other thread when you have a chance. I'm making a list of cars and its head unit that is either compatible or not with the G3 from the get go. Please support it by providing your answers so I can populate the list.
