Should I stay in Alpha 2 or update to 3? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I am getting awesome battery life and everything is stable and no restarts. Is it worth the upgrade to alpha 3? Just wondering as some people have been posting bad battery life.

I always say if its good no need to fix it

I decided not to upgrade to alpha 3. Alpha2 works very well for me.

New is always better but not so sure in this case. Stay
Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk 2

I see no reason not to. I've heard issues with random resets or Sleep of Death with A3, but I was getting that with A2.

I really want to, but don't feel like going through all the trouble. I had to go through hell to get GPS working with alpha 2, and I don't feel like having something go wrong again. I will update when there are major advantages, or when they begin including an easy to use CWM style recovery (I understand why they don't include it). I long for the day when I can boot into recovery and update CM9 with one step, like we did with every other rom.

You should upgrade alpha 3 fixes many bugs and includes more features also. Just don't wipe data and all your settings won't change.

I'm loving it.. Solid! Aplaha 3 for me

Go for it
I went for it. Upgrade was super easy and lost no settings. The install guide states that you do not have to wipe anything for a straight CM9 Update. I had terrible battery life on alpha 2 and it seems to be getting better now that I switched to 3.

Is there a step by step in just updating instead of going back to gingerbread im new at this. Sorry for my noobness.

You don't need to flash gingerbread entirely. Just Odin the el26 kernel long enough to get to recovery, then flash alpha 3.

In my opinion i had flashed both Alpha2 and alpha3 both the same both battery for me is a tad different, alpha3 battery drains alittle faster

Data not working!!

Just wondering why my phone basically went off the grid because one second I was using the internet having a good time. A little slow as 3g sucks ass in my area but now its gone to an incredibly slow crawl taking ten minutes to load Google and another 5 to load a damn simple search. Friend has a crappy evo shift that's getting insanely fast speeds and loading things fine. Same network same house anyone know what's up?

I think your best bet would try and do a fresh re-flash of your current ROM (using Calkulin's format all) , or Odin to stock then see if the issue still occurs. Of course make a Nandroid Backup if you do.
thanks I'll try that but I'm thinking the cyanogenmod 9 alpha 3 first. Been waiting on that for a while

That's fine, I was just saying the current ROM in case you wanted to stay on it. Perfect time to give any other ROM a shot and start fresh.
Just be careful and read the instructions first.
I flash other roms all the time thats not the issue feom what i understand teying to flash different modems till u find the one that works best is the way to go i have flashed about 5 so gb modems seem to work better fyi u can use ics and gb modems on a ics rom but if u r on a gb rom u cant use ics modems
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
never knew that I liked the look of gingerbread tho so I might switch back. I only got ics cause of the hidden nyandroid Easter egg lol kinda dumb reason but still awesome to me
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
There is no way I would go back to gb ics is so much better even with the bugs I just need to find the right modem i guess flash a new one and run speed test or something it drives me nuts that my data just stops in the middle of something im doing

But I am going to work on it tonight so if I find a solution I will post about it

Need help soft bricked my device.

I was upgrading ics and phone got stuck then I turned off and on . Now lts bricked. When I turn on screen led is black , nothing on. Only notification light turn on when I turn on the phone or connect to any USB. When I connect to computer it doesnot recognize. Also phone doesnot go to recovery or download mode. I have tried everything like pressing diff combo buttons even USB jig. Any ideas before I take to store.
Sounds like brick city. Your symptoms are similar to most of is who had bricks.
Take a look around, there are a couple threads in general and the q&a. Maybe pull battery for a couple hours amd come back to it. Otherwise, head to store.
How do I turn my phone on?
Doesn't sound so "soft" if you can't get into recovery or download mode.
Good luck to you.

So you were on Gingerbread, wiped everything and tried to flash an ICS ROM and it bricked your phone? You can't get into download mode? (Hold volume down and power)

OK, yeah if you wiped anything in ICS recovery and have blue light you are done. People are doing OK with the format zip but that's not 100% safe either. Wiping individual partitions is dangerous right now. Well, hope things work out for you at Sprint store. They are getting stricter about that. Let us know how it goes

Whew.... I guess I was the lucky one. I have flashed like crazy and wiped like a madman in both the fc24 repack and fd02 repack. So far, the only thing that happened was a few errors (like mms not working or phone only able to call out, not receive) when flashing mijjz xplod mini. Just had to wipe a few more times, but is working like a champ (so people dont read this wrong, the ROM is just fine, it was my fault by trying to flash theme at same time without setting up the ROM first).

yeah dude, you're better off never using an ICS recovery. ICS recoveries offer nothing that GB recoveries can't do. the only thing gained is convenience and a huge risk of permabricking your phone. oh well, lesson learned (God knows I learned mine).
I've been using one click el29 Odin to go back to gb from ics leaks. My question is if I'm on an ics leak can I flash el26 kernel to go back without bricking?

If you use Odin or mobile odin, yes. I wouldn't recommend trying that through recovery.
Damn, the same thing happened to me with mijjz going from 3.2 to4.0. I even tried sending to mobile tech videos and they couldn't save it. I was using cwm and it froze midway through and it was done. All I get is a blue light.

Does this apply to GB recoveries like Rogue's CWM? I've been using that zip without issues so far but now I'm wondering if it's safe anymore.

even if your phone is really messed up they are making it impossible. thats the phase im in right now.
Do yourself and everyone a favor and just buy a new phone. It isn't fair to all of the people who can read that you didn't read some simple instructions and are going to try and scam sprint to get a new phone. Either buy a new phone full retail (500 at corporate) or buy a phone used. Take it as an expensive lesson to actually read for once.

Reboots by root methods

It seems that out of the quick boot app and titanium and a few other reboot apps it seems titanium responds the fastest. is there a way we can adjust how fast the phone reboots on a quick reboot?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Not really, without kernel source or an official ics release for tmob the reboot issue will persist, since all we have is leaks and ports your best shot would be the newest skyrocket pics port which seems to be working the best of them all

he's talking about rebooting in general, not for ics... which can be fixed with the darkside cache wipe.
Oh I see, but quick boot did work fine on gingerbread for me, yet you're right about the darkside cachewipe.zip, it fixes most of issues afterward, ever since ics leaks and ports came out, if gb is not mentioned it seems obsolete, even I find it more stable than the stage ics is for our device

CNA Rom

Not sure if many people were aware or not but Codename put out a ROM for our Sprint version. It's up on GOO and also if you just google Codename Android, his site will come up. Not sure why he didn't open a thread on here.
I ran his Roms on the Nexus and it was awesome, lots of customizations. It's more like AOKP as far as options as opposed to CM.
Edit: DO NOT FLASH YET, ISSUES BEING WORKED OUT.

Getting a Note 2 soon looking for advice

Hello all not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm going from a note 1 to a note 2 very soon and was wondering what the big differences between the new kernals and ROMs were. Experienced user input is very welcomed. I'm looking for something stable with great battery life as a start, after that, I can try new stuff as I want. Thanks again for any input I get.

None of them are stable. If you want stable stick with stock ROM which is very good. If you are OK with some minor unstable-ness then go with CM10.1 which is really nice on this phone.

So the JB ROMs still have the lost call function and the random reboots? Or is there just a base debloated JB type ROM that don't suffer from those problems?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah pretty much although cm10.1 has fixed a lot and those guys are very good developers. Most other ROMs are just mods of CM. There is still some issues with CM but minor I personally never had a lost call or reboot but sounds on calls sometimes is an issue and camera freezes and video recording has lags and stuttering.

This is not true. Clean ROM is just as stable, if not more stable than stock. It's essentially a stock ROM that had been debloated and had some performance tweaks. I switched over and haven't looked back.
