[Q] Can I do S-OFF After or Before Update? - HTC One X

Hi, I'm going to buy a One X today. It will probably come with 1.20 or 1.26. I will do S-OFF but I'm a update maniac. I want to use the newest things. I saw 1.28 update came with HBOOT, SYSTEM and RADIO updates. Can I do S-OFF after I installed the 1.28 update or can I update HBOOT, SYSTEM and RADIO after I do S-OFF?

i don't have mine yet and i'm no expert, but if HTCDev isn't working with the update then it will be fixed soon.

There is no way of gaining s-off just yet, only way of unlocking the bootloader is through htcdev
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk

I was thinking that unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev as same as S-OFF, sorry about that. I'm chancing my question: Can I unlock bootloader after I installed the 1.28 update or can I update HBOOT, SYSTEM and RADIO after I unlocked bootloader?

You can unlock the hboot via htcdev after the update. Just did it yesterday. Would be a tad strange if it didn't, right?

Yes, would be strange if it didn't but I wanted to make sure Thanks for answer.

I bought my One X a few days ago. I unlocked the bootloader with HTCDev, then downloaded the update. (it will be in /sdcard/download/) I copied the zip to my PC. Inside the zip there's a file called firmware.zip. inside firmware.zip are the radio, hboot, rcdata, boot and such. Just delete those and repack/sign the whole zip again. Now I still got unlocked hboot 0.43 instead of 0.93 wich is inside the update.

Exact steps how do to the whole thing would be nice You see, when you say "just delete those" and flash, I can imagine each person trying this doing it different way, including possibility of bricking the phone.

[Q] fastboot & radio.img

ever since doing the ota and fota my phone was upgraded to 2.3.5 and the most recent radio version. However, I have had connection issues ever since.
My question is. I have downloaded RUU_Marvel_HTC_Europe_1.33.401.2_Radio_47.10.35.3029H_7.46.35.08_release_185724_signed.exe, located its temp files and found ROM.zip, inside which is the image file for the radio version which i found flawless. Can I thru fastboot flash radio.img and restore the phone back to an older radio version?
I tried to install the ROM.zip by following a guide to the letter, but hboot said it was incorrect file.
My phone is current s-on but unlocked thru htcdev, CWM recovery is installed, and has been rooted and is working.
thanks
I don't think you can flash the radio with s-on.
i had a suspicion that would be the case, so I've ordered an xtc clip

too early, mate. you could have downgrade your device to 1.33.401.2 and then install the new hboot from htcdev again (the latest version does not include a new radio anymore) and re unlock your bootloader.

does this mean even if i s-off with xtc clip i can't downgrade
no, the clip will give you absolute freedom.
but if you only wanted to achieve the old radio there would have been a way to do so without the clip.

thew, thats good to know, can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial in how to do what i want, whilst i wait for the arrival of the clip.
Thanks given to you all
Follow that tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445867
then you will be able to flash the official 1.33.401.2 RUU. (but you first have to lock the bootloader again with fastboot oem lock)
in 1.33.401.2 there is hboot 1.03.0000, the hboot will bypassing installation because it can not be downgraded. That means if your device was unlocked before, you can unlock it again.

So let me see if I got this right.
Relock boot loader using fast boot OEM lock
Follow changing version guide
Flash the from that I want
And then unlock again if I want root
exactly
booted phone into fastboot
entered fastboot oem lock - phone now relocked
start following guide for error 190 fix.
got to:
./data/local/tmp/zergRush
*zergRush will kill adb, start it again with*
but it didn't kill adb $ sign still remained, so moved onto next step
cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/misc.img
and i get permission denied.
where am i going wrong
Problem solved, followed error 190 guide, skipped the parts regarding zergrush, completed flash in #prompt.
rebooted phone, let hboot do its work, then got a menu asking me what i wanted to update, or in my case would have been a downgrade.
Thanks given to theq86

I used the HTCDEV unlock to unlock until I found the GoldCard S-OFF method to S-OFF and S-OFF, as we all know > Unlocked bootloader. I used theq86's tool to relock to the original state.
My first question is: what does the "OOW" mean? I have that it means "Out of Warranty" and that it means absolutely nothing.
My second question is: can I downgrade to my original HBOOT? I do not the remember the version, but I'm sure someone out there knows.
My third question: if I downgrade HBOOT, will I lose S-OFF? It's no big deal if I do, I just want to have my GoldCard ready.
Fourth: If I downgrade to the original HBOOT will it still report "LOCKED (OOW)" or will it just say "LOCKED" and does that have any benefit over "LOCKED (OOW)" (I have heard that it does when sending the phone back to HTC.
I simply want my phone to look as stock as possible (with the exception of my ROM, which can easily be stocked) in case it needs to be sent to HTC.

It is not confirmed, but it seems to be Out Of Warranty because if you flash this bootloader HTC will reject warranty
My second question is: can I downgrade to my original HBOOT? I do not the remember the version, but I'm sure someone out there knows.
Yes, you can. Use my tool again and choose the third option "superversion"
Afterwards flash a STOCK RUU and hboot will be downgraded as well.
My third question: if I downgrade HBOOT, will I lose S-OFF? It's no big deal if I do, I just want to have my GoldCard ready.
I don't know, but S-OFFing again is no problem if it really goes away.
Fourth: If I downgrade to the original HBOOT will it still report "LOCKED (OOW)" or will it just say "LOCKED" and does that have any benefit over "LOCKED (OOW)" (I have heard that it does when sending the phone back to HTC.
If you downgrade HBOOT it will neither show LOCKED, RELOCKED or UNLOCKED because the standard hboots do not check this.
I simply want my phone to look as stock as possible (with the exception of my ROM, which can easily be stocked) in case it needs to be sent to HTC.

When you say to flash a stock RUU do you mean one of the ones from HTC Dev or elsewhere? Can you provide a link. If it would help, I have a marvelc with Virgin Mobile US.
In the dev section there is a thread where many many stock rom RUUs are. so take a look at there. it's one of the sticky posts.
To downgrade your bootloader, since your s-off just take the ruu with the bootloader of your choice. Extract the rom.zip. open it up and you will find a file called bootloader or hboot or something to that effect. Take that file and the android update.txt file. Zip them both up and rename it pg76img.zip
Put it in the root if your sdcard and boot into hboot. The phone will find the update and just flash it. Done

Is there a specific ROM I should be running? Using simonsimon34's CM7 port and with my PC running Windows 8 Consumer Preview (with HTC Drivers) I am told that the RUU utility is unable to find the Android phone.
Do I need a ROM with HTC Sync?
Which method are you trying?

I'm just trying to run the RUU.exe.
EDIT: I installed Vista and so far it appears to work. I'm going to wait until later to actually go all the way through. (I just went far enough for it to verify my "PDA phone".)

Driving me wild (fire)

Hiya folks!
I unlocked my daughter Wildfire S hboot via HTC-Dev when it was first released and upgraded from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 EU to get rid of the 3 bloatware on the original rom, I did not root at the time as it was still in its very infant stage and did not wish to give my daughter my Rooted Desire through bricking hers!
Now the time has come to root as she is constantly telling me of a space shortage...I know we've all been there..so thinking the Hboot was still unlocked I ran through HTC super tool 3 , tried a couple of times with no success so realized there must be something I've missed, I checked the hboot was still unlocked in the pink text I believe it was to find that it no longer states unlocked, locked or any extra text just,

Go to htcdev and follow instructions to unlock your bootloader.Once it's unlocked, you should see "UNLOCKED" at the top when you boot ur phone.
And then you can root the phone.

OK Ta I wondered if I had to do it again, I guess as I have already updated to 2.3.5 from the first time I can skip that part and precede to straight step 1 ?
Did you tried this? I had problem with rooting my wfs, I can't find script i used right now. I'll update this post if i will find it.
What happened is that the 2.3.5 update changed your HBOOT from the previous one.......Go to htcdev.com start the unlock process and when prompted to download an RUU........ just download the RUU with the software more than the one you are having..... in your case the Europe RUU and just follow the instructions thereafter.....
Right got 'ERROR 190 ROM IS NOT SUPPORTED' please upgrade to 2.13.401.3 to apply this RUU, can I use a different RUU csoulr66 other than EU?
Wish I'd done this in one hit rather than in parts! Thanks in advance all!!!
You're 100% sure that you grabbed proper RUU? According to error you get and htcdev it should be this:
HTC EU 2.13.401.3 PG7610000 - sry can't give you direct link because of forum limitation for users under 8 posts
have you made a goldcard????? Because you will need one to run an RUU

I have a unlocked phone but I never hear about goldcard, are you sure it's needed ?
A goldcard is used to debrand the CID. Without a goldcard, you cant install diags/downgrade/etc because the CID is branded with your carrier.
I had this problem originally, all you have to do is run a stock rom RUU (From the list supplied by football in the stickies) with a goldcard. Then go back to the HTC dev website and upgrade the hboot.

All done, I could not down load any of the links from 'footballs' thread, busy..no free slots etc , so I found a Spanish site and upgraded to 'Europe_2.13.401.3_Radio_47.23c.35.3037_7.54.39.28M_release_236989' then all worked as it should following the instructions on the HTC DEV site, rooted and running SENSELESS_2.3.5_jermzii_v.1.2, thanks all!!

If you have unlocked via HTCDev the this would have removed your CID in which case yes you should be able to flash the WWE RUU on a branded device.
If you have not unlocked and are still running stock then no it wont work.
Does HTCDev unlock remove CID? Unless it changed to 11111111 you still won't be able to flash an RUU AFAIK

It does indeed. It doesn't change it to 1111111 it completely removes it altogether.
I re locked the bootloader the other day and re-flashed the WWE RUU as im sending it back (screen flickering problem) and it worked with no issues.

I am Vodafone Australia and unlocked my phone via HTCdev. I am also facing the same problem (screen flickering)and need to send it back. I have re-locked it. As you just said "I re locked the bootloader the other day and re-flashed the WWE RUU as im sending it back" can you please explain how did you re-flash the WWE RUU? steps or link?

Stock RUU for 1.28 needed
Hi there
I have effectively killed my HTC one - I unlocked via htcdev and upgraded the recovery - fastboot shows the device id when running the command fastboot devices.
However I am now stuck in a boot loop where the phone only boots to hboot (following a failed boot.img flash) I have downgraded back to stock recovery and re locked but cant find the 1.28 RUU to recover the device (and I did try the RUU for 1.26 but it wouldnt install)
Once I updated te recovery i ran the fastboot boot boot.img command
This failed to progress past the 'htc quietly brilliant' flash screen.
I dont have the rom .zip saved on my internal memory on the phone - I was hoping to be able to push it to the /data/ partition however when I try this sdb returns no connected device.
Wonder if anyone can assist in either
a - returning to stock with a RUU for 1.28
or
b - advise how to flash the files I need onto the phone (it seems that the ROM isnt booting so I assume its from the point I install boot.img and beyond I need so help)
Unfortunately I cant get the phone to boot to copy files to the memory so need to work entirely in fastboot and adb (assuming adb wil recognise the handset)
Many thanks
Gurry

But relocking it puts it back so unless you were on HTC__001 you'd be back on the VODAP001 CID

[Q] Relock to send back to Verizon

Hello, just a quick question. I had my One rooted, s-off, and unlocked when my microphone went. So I relocked, s-on, and flashed an RUU via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216. Just making sure that before I pack it in the box, there is nothing else that could trip the people at Verizon that I had messed with my phone. I took the OTAs up to 4.3. I'm just paranoid about info not matching up such as the baseband version and build number etc. Thanks
Does the bootloader say locked or relocked? Locked is good relocked not so much. Other than that you should be fine. Ruu's wipe everything and install it all fresh, including the firmware (baseband, hboot, recovery, etc), so everything will match up.
In the bootloader I have "Locked" also s-on. I noticed though with the refurbished phone I received (not happy about having to get refurbished but thats besides the point) the CID number shows in the bootloader screen whereas on my original phone it is not displayed. Not sure if I even need to be this worried, but I'm just paranoid. Thanks
Are both phones on the same hboot version? I dont remember if it showed in older hboots or not. Either way i wouldn't worry, locked and s-on is all you need.
No they weren't. I'm just going to stop worrying too much about it. Thanks
If i send my phone back to verizon do i have to be on the original ROM? i understand that i need to lock my bootloader and have s-on, but what about the software itself?
It can be on stock rom/firmware of any version. Just no custom roms or anything.
Just to confirm, if I have a phone that is S-OFF, unlocked:
1. Do I need to lock the bootloader before flashing an RUU?
2. Does flashing an RUU revert the phone to S-ON?
3. Does anything special otherwise need to be done to the phone prior to flashing the RUU?
Thanks so much in advance.
I also have to return a phone to VZW due to a hardware issue (the autofocus issue finally too much for me to bear).
You only need to relock the bootloader if using a signed ruu. A decrypted ruu does not need it locked.
Flashing an ruu will not remove s-off or relock the bootloader. You can do it before or after, but i sugest after, that way if something goes wrong durring the ruu, you still have options.
Once you do the ruu you will be stock. So the only thing you would have to do is relock and go s-on.
Fantastically clear, Clumsco, thanks! Three quick additional questions
1. is there any advantage to flashing the signed RUU, and adding danger by locking the bootloader beforehand? In your links below your signature is a path to both decrypted and signed versions of the latest RUUs. So I thought to ask before going with one or the other. If there is no advantage then I guess the decrypted version would be the safer bet, right?
2. Is there a danger that locking after the RUU will result in a "relocked" versus the desired "Locked" status?
3. Will the RUU flash wipe my /sdcard area? If so I'll back everything up before embarking on this.
I VERY much appreciate the help. I ran rumrunner several months back and have forgotten a lot of the nuances. Thanks for the quick primer!

There is no difference between a signed and decrypted ruu other than what their names suggest. Ones signed ones not, both do the exact same thing to the phone.
You can lock the bootloader first. As long as you still have s-off, you have a saftey net. As long as your s-off you can change it to say what ever you want it to say. Locked, relocked, or unlocked.
Yes the ruu will wipe everything.
You will want to back up your sd.
Do the ruu.
Take the ota to kitkat.
Lock the bootloader.
Go s-on.
Thanks, everything worked. For future knowledge, can you flash signed RUU's with an S-ON device?

Yes and no. You can flash a signed ruu if s-on, but not one that is an older version than currently on the phone. It has to be the same or a newer version. This is an issue if your on kitkat, as we do not currently have a kk ruu available.

I'm trying to learn here too, that is dependent on the hboot correct? So if you were to downgrade your hboot via the thread somewhere in the VZW HTC One forum, you should be able to flash any RUU right?
Technically yes, although as far as i know there is no way to do so while s-on and locked. In order to downgrade hboot you would need to have the bootloader unlocked. Since verizon does not let us use htcdev to unlock, it would be virtually imposible.
Your responses are clear and helpful. Thanks a bunch!
