[Q] Child Proof - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I bought a phone with a bad ESN so I will not be able to add it to my second line, Damm you ebay..
I decided to give the phone to my 7 year old and i want to put the phone on lock down, im removing everything i can including mms, phone apk, and everything not relating to playing games and using gtalk with wifi.
i want her to have games, gtalk, camera/camcorder and maybe just maybe a browser.
any safe ways to do this? any apps to password protect accessing the phone seetings?

Kids place is a pretty good app to keep the young ones from messing things up.

You can root and delete the apps you dontt want them to have access to. I believe there is a disable option for most system apps in the application manager.

thank you,, ill try that app and will be deleting most apps and see if the phone doesnt freeze up

there Is also a kid friendly (content filtered) browser in the market. can't remember the name at the moment but it might help u out.

Problem with issues/features of android

Well I got my hands on the most advanced operating system
It is nice but a bit annoying unfortunately. I have some questions about it guys and hope you will be able to help me.
For starters the Gmail app is crashing all the time 'stopped unexpectedly', maybe because I told it not to sync, but come on I can't even open it. I use the exchange and if I tell gmail to sync I just get my emails twice which is annoying.
For some reason the thing decided that I want my facebook contacts in my dialer. Unfortunately I don't. When I linked them to some real people it named them however it wanted without giving me the option to rename my own contacts. And I don't want facebook contacts in all people. So I factory reset it and told it not to sync them, but then I can't associate my actual contacts with facebook. I mean the fracking thing wants to do what it wants and I want it to do what I want .
Can I have more screens on sense - like in winmo sense?
Then I don't have a simple file browser, why , the BT file transfer is not working, or just not available, no mp3 for ringtone or I missed something, my 6 and a half year old crap symbian nokia has both bt and mp3?
I can't seem to make it auto attach to the HSDPA network, don't know why, no such setting
Why does all the software makes folders wherever it wants, all over the sd card, without even bothering to ask my opinion
I installed 3-4 apps including the missing file browser and bt transfer, plus some more basic stuff sat nav and now I'm running out of space, why
Don't get me wrong, android is alright, I didn't wrote here to bash it or something, just to share another thing below
Ever since the dream came out I read what a great os android is, now I get it 3 years later and I find it lacks some basic functionality I had many years ago on my crap symbian. I was with winmo the past 4 years, it has flaws, but it's mail client hasn't crashed once, and I can't even open Gmail app on Google OS. I can't even imagine what was the expirience for the dream owners. The other thing, I am not a programmer, but I have used linux before, and calling this thing linux is like if I call my house a skyscraper.
Anyway if someone has a solution for my problems I will be really grateful guys
Ok I'll kick this off:
Gmail app crashes - Well mine doesn't and never has if you have factory reset and its still doing it then maybe try looking to see if it a problem with using exchange at the same time.
More Screens - The desire has 7 home screens 2 to the left and 2 to the right which can be viewed by swiping left and right, pinching the screen as in a zoom out method or pressing the home button.
No File browser - yeah your right install Astro
No Auto HSDDPA - Not sure about this as mine just does any more info?
Random FOlders - Yeah this is very annoying maybe version 3 will address this
Lack of Space - the phone has limited internal storage and all appds install to it. Version 2.2 is now being rolled out which allows installation to the SD card which will give more room. The Sat nav stuff is huge and will be why you are running out so quick. That along with the carp the network operator has shoved on there so debrand asap.
Its not linux - you're right its based on it though. A full blown linux install would frighten most ppl though so they have installed a nice UI to cover up the complex stuff.
Thanks
The gmail app crashed less (1 of 3 times) if I actually synced mail with it and every time if I sync only contacts
I know about the 7 screens, just wished for more -10 for instance, I've been using smartphones for quite a while
Hsdpa can be on or off, it can't be off and then connect by itself if something needs it.
Its weird but 3 mobile didn't put any crap inside, or at least it is not in the apps part. Actually I had to download the crap by myself as it was skype, which I wanted to have anyway
I am still unsure about rooting it, as it looks like I won't be able to achieve much, alright I'll have a terminal, but I need to use it for something
The device says it has 147MB for software, sat nav 2x11-12MB + crap on sd card, some other minor stuff - file explorer, bt transfer, taskmanager, dictionary with database on sd, goggles haven't tried it yet, flashlight, skype, win messenger, google earth and it's at 75%
hope this helps and thanks again for the advice
Hi Again I am stuck on the gmail issue and unfortunately there are only 7 home screens.
You may try Data On Demand app that may do something like what you need for the data.
I wouldn't bother with rooting as like you say its not really necessary and has few advantages other than backup.
I know Google earth is huge but it does appear like you should only of used around 60 to 70 Meg or 50% from the stuff you list Mind you I think a lot of the system apps like weather etc may use some of that memory but cant be uninstalled but I could be wrong on this.
If you're going to get the best out of this phone you have to give in to google.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yeah, thanks, in programs there is the data consumption of all apps, surprisingly, the browser has used 7,84MB of max allowed 6MB cache, now I know what's wrong with the space
Do you have any idea about the contacts+facebook issue? For example a .conf I can edit or something else
Btw I knew about these issues in 1.5 (bt,storage, file explorer), but I tought they were fixed over 3 years. I haven't read much about them, except how great android was and now i feel like a kid without icecream
@Mark One - What do you mean by this, if I wanted a device which did what it wanted, I would have bought an istick. Linux has always been doing what I told it even if it lead it to crash. It's just a phone if I don't get along with it I'll just get another one.
Err the facebook issue I dont have cos i dont use it but I do know that if you press phone and press the option on the bottom left to show all people then you can press the menu key which allows the selection of the "View" option where you can set "only show contacts with phone numbers" maybe this will help?
Froyo or version 2.2 of android has just been released which addresses the storage problem but not the others
I found this, it ditches most of the FB contacts, but leaves the ones which have phone numbers entered in their profiles, that is in the dialer only. I'll keep digging on this one.
Alright, I rooted the thing with unrevoked and the hboot 0.83 recovery image, installed froyo open desire sense + 5.xx radio. Unfortunately everything is the same, only skype is not working now. I formated the sdcard but the thing only lets me move a couple of small apps on it. Sat nav doesn't want to be on the sd, is this only me?
My mobile network is blocking sites with xxx content, unfortunately it is blocking some which don't have. I tried to change the user agent of the browser, it didn't work. If anyone has any idea about this
Now I debranded and rooted what do I do next

[Q] new guy needs help

ok where can i get apps at?
how do i tether?
where can i get ring tones at?
all my fb contacts were loaded on to my call list, i dont want them there can i just delete them?
any input that u want to share with a new user would be great!!
thats all for now but more to come thanks!
Android Market.
Install one of the many tethering apps in the market, or root and use the wifi tether app.
Just drag and drop into sd card, select in the music player and press menu > set as > ringtone.
root? lol man i told you im coming from a bb so yea lol
You can also get anyone of a dozen apps like Ringdroid to select the part of the song you want for the ringtone.
If removing the FB synch doesn't get rid of the contacts then if all your contacts are already on Google then you can delete all contacts and just synch back the Google ones.

Rooting is akin to gaining admin access on a computer, it gives you near total control over your phone and let's you do things like remove system apps (like Sprint Bloat and the like).

You have the market application on your phone, it's called Market, download your apps from there. If you want to scan barcodes then download the barcode scanner app.
When you turn wifi on your phone will look for open networks then notify you, don't leave wifi on when not connected or you'll just be wasting battery while it searches.
Do not use a taskiller. Seriously. It interferes with the Android system and just wastes battery life.
I think you need to do some research on how to use your phone, some of these things are extrememely basic and covered in the booklet that came with your phone.
thanks for the input! I know i need to read it lol just waiting for some quiet time to do so
how about this if i un sync fb from my E will i still get the feeds? i just dont want my fb friends on my contacts....

It sounds like you are just getting started. You can go in settings and reset phone and start over. When you sign into Facebook, there's an option to skip the sync part and just sign in

Busted? android market purchases Q.

i gotta go see sprint, i have ins. and rooted but i just odin back to complete stock. no longer rooted but if they simply went into my market, they would see how ive purchased apps like root explorer and titanium back up and setcpu. will i now be turned away because they saw i was obviously rooted? can i fix this, maybe delete my google account or something?
side question, how can i restore data (contacts and calendar) without root? i did TB and CWM backups before i odin but dont see any backup and restore options in three finger boot,
They're not putting you on trial, they aren't going to go out of their way to look for evidence of root. If you're on the stock rom, theme, boot animation and recovery they won't know anything.
Factory reset and don't associate your device with a Google account. Or create a new account and link it to your phone so that nothing syncs up (primarily the market apps).
Or use Titanium Backup Pro to "unlink" those apps from the market, then uninstall TB.
Though I suppose that having apps which require root does't mean that you are in fact rooted. The ignorance defence should be adequate here, but why risk it?
Tell them you use that same account for your tablet..
thanks guys! i didnt even think of that quick! thats a great idea. im going to create a second google account. it will be the one ill use and log in on my phone for those times i need to go in.
may require a lil work at first but will be worth it in the end. ill download a few games and what not for that account, tweak it a bit but when i dont plan to see sprint any time soon ill go back to running my main google account. with all the rooted apps logged. ill see if this works.
can contacts be saved to my computer via usb? i returned to my old set up atm, rooted and all so i can try to save my contacts somewhere else to bring back after i odin again. although this is all a b*tch, im learning a lot

[Q] Transfer from Nexus S -> Galaxy Nexus help!

So my Galaxy Nexus is coming in the mail either today (May 9) or tomorrow (May 10).
I have a Nexus S and A LOT of stuff on it; apps, pictures, music, saved data, email crap, etc.
Is there anyway to transfer all of it to my new Galaxy Nexus??? Like is there some sort of Google service that can do that?
C'mon guys! Someone HAS to know an answer......
I transferred the data (pics, music, etc) from my old phone to a folder on my comp and then transferred it back to the Nexus. Is that an option for you?

The half a paragraph that google means, if you have all your pictures synced with google plus, and have all your music on the google music server, then you would be able to get that back with just signing in, hopefully you sync your contacts with google that also will come back. The apps part well I always found their app restore alittle problematic, it does keep a record of your apps installed, and they will reinstall if you opt into that, but you may get a ton of apps tthat you deleted that may get thrown in there too.
I have not used app brain in a long while but they did have a feature that scans your installed apps and lets save that to your profile, that will be your best choice if that is still a feature. But app data does not get restored, for that you will have too copy over some folders, they should mostly be in android/data but YMMV with that and may be hit or miss if the data gets restored. On a side note if/when you try that install the apps first then copy the android/data folders back over and then restart your phone.
These are your options if your not rooted I may be wrong, but I have restored some games data for a friend by copying that android/data to their new phone
I really hope with google giving out personnel cloud storage that they include a opt in to have your app data stored in their. For normal consumers they do not know xda they do not know root. Having a means to include seemless app backup would be great as for normal people digging through folders to backup app data in case their phone breaks is not something they think about
Ok..
Go to google.com/nexus
Click on the "Beyond Smart" link/shortcut thingy
then read what it says....

It's referring to Google Backup; if you have an option on your Nexus S to b/u your apps/settings to Google servers, then it will automatically restore your apps, and some settings (wifi passwords, etc...) to your phone. It won't restore any data associated with these apps however, i.e. you made to to the 99th level on some game, etc... It's not a special cloud service you have to sign up for, but you do have to check a box or two. It's handy, but not as potentially awesome as they make it sound. Look in the settings menu on your current phone, option will be under Backup and Restore or alike, and you'll be prompted for these options the first time you fire up your new phone.
IF you're backed up currently, it will auto download your apps (including the free ones) to your phone when you sign into your Google acct.
No idea if it works in going from Nexus S to Galaxy Nexus however.

Question Phone hacked detection

Good morning everyone,
I am not super tech savvy, and need some help. I truly believe that my phone is somehow hacked, here is the situation:
My significant other and I are going through a break up in court,
She seems to know what I am saying in real time, often mentioning in it later that day or the next day; She seems to know what I am google searching, and even possibly what photos I have taken.
When I put my phone in airplane mode a few times, I could tell, even though she would have no idea that I put it in airplane mode, she freaked out by texting me repeatedly as if she was trying to get me to respond to pick up my signal or something.
Could she have hired someone from the dark web or something and they have hacked or cloned my phone?
The program I have for security is Avast.
Is there anything I can do other than trading my fold 3 in for the fold 4 to completely gain confidence I am not being spied on? I know that she would go to any extreme to find out what I am doing, her whole family is schizo like that and I am really worried, I just want to have the piece of mind my phone is safe, and as of now I dont trust it, or anything else electronic in my house.
Any comments or suggestions are truly appreciated and welcomed.
Check Google account for any unauthorized logins.
Backup all critical data, remove Google and Samsung accounts from phone.
Factory reset from settings, then reset your Google account password. Done.
Be careful what you install and don't let others use the device or connect foreign flash drives to it. Do Not install or use trash sites like WhatsApp, FB, Tiktok, etc.

I agree completely with the recommendation that you do the factory reset. And if you have access to a laptop or computer-- or any other device: use a web browser to change Google and Samsung passwords. Also if you use any other email provider, chat apps change those passwords too.

Yeah in this case I would say she definitely somehow has access to your Google account. Your best bet is to first go through and remove any recovery email / phone numbers you don't recognize from your account and then do a factory reset of your current device, if you want to go further you could reflash Android onto the device using ODIN but that does take some knowhow. Also check for any unrecognized apps on your device, as simply having access to your backups will not give her instant access to what you said so my best guess is that she has your passwords.

brain.exe! An anti virus app compares your installed packages (apps) with a black list on its home server. Is there a match => show a warning screen. The problem here is that it's no problem to install a package with a random generated name (Magisk users should know what I mean). So you have no chance to detect it. And that's only one method to bypass your anti virus.
Afraid of unknown apps? Check your installed apps either in your device settings or by checking the folder /data/app which is accessible without root permissions. Every app for Android has to store its APK in this directory or otherwise it is not executable.
Apart from that a Google account must be secured by at least 2FA. This is the minimum to secure your data. Find it in your Google settings. There is also listed which devices are currently logged in.
Messenger apps can't be installed with your account on 2 or more different devices without a warning or without being uninstalled on the first device. Additionally you need a verification for that which will be sent to your mobile no.
Spying on a device also means permanent data traffic. Did you check your device settings if any app shows irregular high data traffic?

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. A friend of mine went through something similar. His ex had connections to email accounts and online messaging accounts by password spoofing and other means and might have had some help knowing what passwords he used or like to use. He was alerted of random locations of unauthorized access to gmail and yahoo many many times, he sent them to me along with other chat messages from things she wouldn't know unless she or someone was watching him. I believed his vehicle or phone had been tracked by gps but we never found anything. His ex knew stuff that didn't make sense and where he was were as if he was being watched, and I'm also positive he was being watched. They were living together during court for a 3 months and then separated. I told him to stop using all the online chats, reset phone and change passwords. And he did, but he was still being tracked. I said either they put in some gps tracking device like an apple air tag or cheap gps tracker or a recording device somewhere or had someone watching him. I told him to buy a temp phone with new number and he did and communicate with only a handful of people he 100% trusted and left his main phone at home most of time until the court stuff was over. He thought she had connections to a law enforcement detective. I said anything is possible. Talk about being paranoid. I went through most of it with him. He also bought a new computer and after a new phone and trading in his car, yes, he did all three. I thought he shouldn't have to go that far but there was a lot crazy stuff going that didn't make sense. So after he did those things and also got a secure place of his own, and bought video cameras for his car and house, she went completely was clueless...but also turned crazy agitated and annoying. There's so much more but its amazing what lengths some people will go to on both ends.
Oh I forgot to add she or someone had attached random different emails to two of his accounts for backup emails. He sent me pictures. I believe that is for an alternative login and forget password. So even if you changed it she could still get access. So check that too!
Do you have separate phone accounts or on the same plan? Hopefully separate or she could be accessing your mobile account.
Is she using Android or iPhone?
You can care or not care about it, but I say do what makes you feel safe and comfortable.
Definitely start with what Blackhawk wrote!
I'm so sorry to ramble on, your post just made me think of that and all the horrible stuff she did to my friend.
One day at a time my friend, it will get better!
I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks, this is exactly happening to me. I believe she has seen photos either from google photos or on my phone, although I dont know how she could access, as well as a critical timeline of texts have just disappeared, I have no idea how to recover them, only her texts on the text app on the fold 3 phone have disappeared, a 2 month block of our conversations, I dont know how to e tthem back, I tried reinstalling my back up, but those messages are gone, even in my samsung back up and google back up, any idea how I could have my phone professionally recover those messages, i am willing to pay whatever amount, i really need those messages for court.....any ideas? I will pay for someone to try...
What happened was, she had my phone for like an hour (before the breakup) and I noticed days later those messages gone, then came the break up, seperation, court order, etc.....it is a true nightmare that was thought out by her. I know her brother stalked his girlfriend with a gps tracker, broke into her email, facebook, etc, so i know she used his know how to do the same.
Any ideas on how to ge tthose messages back? I would be extremely grateful to get those...
You should not forget that this person was part of your life for a long time. She knows a lot of your habits in daily life and there are a lot of people knowing both of you. One of them might see you somewhere and the next day this person meets your Ex and they talk about it. You can get a lot of information about a person even without having access to his/her mobile phone, accounts and so on. Sometimes you only see what you want ro see. Especially in such a challenging situation like a separation. Often you realized it by yourself when some time is passed and you have enough distance to it.

Ahh ha, now this is definitely making more sense. So the actual SMS MMS text app? Only way to get messages back aside from a backup would be from the carrier, AFIK. I believe there is android recovery software that may be able to recover deleted messages.

Yes, the SMS. I would have no idea how to contact them, I had Infinity at the time that the texts were sent, so would they even have those texts?

Ok. I don't know Infinity, but I believe you would need to open a case with them and file a court order with other carriers. I would give them a call and ask technical support and customer relations on how you would go about getting those back. Do you have date and time when they were sent? They might need that specific information. Your attorney may have experience with this.

Stop goofing around with the runt and play hardball. Let the pros handle it. They have tools and methods that would make your head spin like Linda Blair.
&
Gps tracking device on car or other personal belonging. Relax. Sit back and look at the clues, find the cause(s), plug the leaks. Better yet, let the FBI build a case and do as directed... federal crimes will put someone deep in the hurt locker.
You could actually use this situation to your advantage, for a while, you could email/text things that would really make her happy/sad/angry/jealous etc when bored with that do the above wipe recommendations!

The likelihood of your phone being hacked is really quite low. if you're truly concerned however, factory reset your phone, start from scratch, don't restore backups.
The main thing I'm certain you need to do is go and change all of your account passwords. If the account offers it, tell it to "force sign out everywhere"
Turn on 2 factor authentication, ideally not using a phone or email that she would know about.
Start here:

Goes without saying, go change facebook passwords, twitter, all your socials. change everything.
