I have searched and googled but came up with little more than nothing. I have temporarily gone back to K9 mail due to the lack of speed and response in the gmail app. It opens really slowly and then takes ages to open an email whether it is graphic packed or text only.
I have looked into finding a setting to only load a certain number of day worth or a number of emails like in K9. But there doesn't seem to be anything.
Does anyone know a way round this or would I be best to stick with K9 which I am quite happy to do btw?

My father has so many emails, it's insane, the Gmail app works fine for him and he is on stock. What rom are you running? Is it sense based? Don't run sense based roms.
Having an old gmail account with a whole lot of email only affects your phone's ability to voice search, evidently. He's had an account since near the beginning, and has a lot of emails, and voice search gets a "connection problem" every time he tries. There are thousands of others with this problem, no response from Google on the code bugreport page. Stupid
Don't really use voice search and have a couple of hundred emails. I'm running andro test 44 but its been like it for a while on various versions of GB and ICS. Obviously its a touch quicker in some respects on established GB roms but still not as fast as in the past. Just wandering if there is something that google have done to servers or the gmail app to bog it down.

I keep my inbox pretty clean, less then 50. Get about 20 a day no lag for me. Girlfriend hasn't emptied hers in forever at least 500 in hers, she hasn't complained about any lags.

Since vodafone are starting enforcing their data allowance limits in October, I've been keeping a closer eye on my data usage and was surprised to see that, some days, I'm using 60-70mb. I knew that I was actively using a fraction of that so it had to be something running in the background.
I've got things like facebook and seesmic set to update once an hour and most other things set to manual or once a day updates. Most heavy data use apps like Spotify and Guardian Anywhere are set to only update over Wifi so I couldn't figure out what it might be.
After some searching, I managed to find an app which can break down data usage per app. It turns out that, in the space of a few hours, Calendar used about 20mb just running in the background. I'm guessing this is an HTC sense problem rather than an android issue with just keeping my gmail account in sync, since gmail and contacts aren't pulling down anything like the same amount of data.
Does anyone know how to set refresh intervals for calendar without affecting the other gmail account sync data? The only options I can find is straight on/off with no frequency options.
I'm rooted and using stock rom, since I prefer stability and even the most stable custom roms tend to have a few quirks here and there, but I cant afford so much data to be squandered when it doesn't need to be so might switch, but in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions? I tried searching the forum but it doesn't seem like there's anyone else having the same problem.

Hi, would you mind posting a link to this app? I have the same problem and have searched for something to break down usage per app but couldn't find anything. Thanks, Stoatie
Wow! Now THAT explains everything and why I was averaging 50-70mb/day as well! I'm also watching my data usage, so thank you so much for this post...
As for an answer, my best advice for now....remove the tick that allows your calendar to sync with your gmail account. The only reason you need to sync your accounts is if you frequently use the web app and as a backup option. So, you can turn off that and your contacts sync and everything will still stay as is and save you precious data. Then you can sync everything once a day or every couple of days if you're into flashing roms or are prone to lose phones, etc.
Hope that helps...I'm about to try out and watch my data usage as well!
+1 for a link to the app thaat breaks data use down by app

+ 2 for the same app please - I know a few guys have been looking for such an app on here for some time now.
Much appreciated.
This is what I use:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/trafficstats/com.trafficstats
appstorehq.com/networkstatistics-android-174793/app this is the one I used. It's been discontinued but is still available in the market. To be honest though, the one posted above looks like the better app, and it's free.
Thanks for the reccomendations

Hi,
My daily 3g useage today is currently at 64Mb, which is just crazy. I haven't used the internet, you tube, etc; and on checking watchdog 3g pro it indicated that it is my Mail that has received this amount. But, that's impossible, the mail size -when check on laptop through Outlook- is around 3 Mb.
Has anyone got any idea why the mail seems to think it has received 20 times this? Is it the Mail app, or Watchdog 3g pro?
I am running Modaco r11 rom, with most of superfluious components removed.
I don't think it's syncing issue Facebook or any other app. Could another app to receiving this data and it is assigned to Mail.
Just a bit confused. The same thing happened in December, but I think that was related to Advanced Task Killer Froyo, which I uninstalled and haven't had the problem since. But this does seem to happen every two to three months - wierd phantom data.
Cheers
Bumping this as again have had crazy 3g usage - 122mb in 1 day, but same as before, from mail. No way have I used that much, but Orange confirmed it. Only change us that I am.using insertion Rom.
Any ideas why my mail app seems go crazy every do often & download 'ghost' data (idea: is it stuck partially downloading something? In a kind of mobius data loop?)

If I was you I would sort the problem out. Delete the account then add it again. It seems pretty weird though.
Swyped...
default refresh values at peak times are like every 15 mins.... have you changed this?
I personally don't auto sync enabled.... only refreshes when I open
Cheers for the replies.
Hmm, I might try deleting the accounts and reinputting them. But it has happened before, and I seem to be the only one with this problem. Could it have something to do with my email provider (which is also my ISP)? Anyone got any technical knowledge about this type if thing?
The prob with manually refreshing the email is that I'm self employed and out and about alot, so need the email frequency set quite regular so I am not constantly looking at phone - it's set for every 15 mins; that said, I hadn't even set it download whole emails.
Could it be something from rooting? But that should make not difference. Or is there any malware that could be doing this...as you see, grabbing at straws here...
Oh, and the Rom I am using is Insertcoin not insertion (damn that predictive text)

I am confused. in past several months I tried bunch of ROM's and every sigle of them had gmail sending mail issues. Why google? They are same people who made android, and that is why I am expecting their app's to be smooth and better from others. Sometimes after seeing red "sending..." message mail stays for hours in outbox, no metter how many times you sync, refresh or even restart your phone (this happens mostly when replying but not limited to). Am I only one with this problem and why gmail (app) sucks so much?

Gmail version 2.3.4.1 gave me problems with Sense-based roms initially and I ended up reverting back to version 2.3.2, however, I didn't recall having that problem with the stock odexed 3.70 rom. Furthermore, I have no problems with version 2.3.4.1 using an AOSP rom, specifically Salvage-Mod 1.2.1. If you have the time, nandroid backup your current setup, download and flash the rooted stock 3.70 rom from the link below and then test your gmail performance.

This same thing happened to me. Someone on here made the suggestion of going into my application settings and clearing the data, and since then it has worked flawlessly.
Clearing the data worked for me on my EVO.....thanks all
I keep getting these weird texts from 6250 saying VZWNMN 1 and VZWNMN 2. Anyone else see this?
Me to. Comes prior to every email. VZW said they never heard of it.

I used to receive these, but I figured out how to stop them!
1. Login to your MyVerizon.
2. Find your number and click on Change Features from the bottom right.
3. Select your device/number.
4. Then scroll down until you find Contact Management and click remove!
And they're gone.
EDIT: Don't want to take credit for this, I got this from Droid Life, but I re-wrote it.
Thank you kind sir! This helped!

I've synced/added gmail and yahoo mail accounts at setup and found that only the yahoo account was affected. Now I just use yahoo mail through their app and the functionality is much better/no VZWNMN emails.
This problem seemed to change from ROM to ROM(some were affected, some not).

I had this problem when I went from a Sense rom back to CM7. I think it happens because on the Sense rom, during setup, it syncs your contacts and email to Verizon. When I flashed a different rom, it could no longer sync.
This has to be one of the most annoying things Verizon has done. I don't mind it syncing. It is actually kind of cool. I don't know how many times I have deleted a very important email and had no backup.
But texting me everytime I get an email is annoying and a pain.
For awhile, I was avoiding ROMs(like MIUI for me) that seemed to have this VZWNMN problem more than others I was using.
I've found that using a market email app(for me, Yahoo!) is better than trying to use the installed android email app for non-Google email. Functionality(like folders) is much better, too.
If you use Titanium to back-up apps, you don't need to re-sign into your email app when you change ROM's, just restore and away you go...
Judging from similar threads created on these forums, I'm expecting to get *crickets* in response to this thread, but thought it couldn't hurt to post this anyway.
Hopefully, someone else in the known business world is still having Lotus Notes imposed on them by their employer for email, and subsequently has to use Lotus Traveler for their email app.
Here's my problem:
I am currently running Devils' Reject 4.1.1 TW rom, and while the rom itself is nice, I am somewhat of a flashaholic, and like some of the AOSP roms out there. However, I use my device for business and personal, and the issue is that IBM doesn't have their sh*t together, so their most current version of Lotus Traveler which is 8.5.3.x doesn't play nice with Android 4.2.x.
As a result, you have to log a service request with IBM, they have to get you the current patch to make things work, etc.
The problem is, I am still running Lotus Traveler 8.5.2.2, and this is the latest version my company has access to, and of course, there's no IBM service patch that will make this Traveler version work with Android 4.2.x.
So, to make a long story short, I'm looking for someone -anyone- who can point me toward or just be kind enough to share with me the actual Lotus Traveler 8.5.3.x apk.
Thanks,
Ryan

Yea, found that one last month, but it won't install. Others have reported the same result.
Might have to go straight to IBM and log a service desk request.
Sucks.
Thanks anyway.

I don't know if it's crazy, but having it always on is sure to burn thru the battery more. I always set mine to sync every 15 minutes during peak times.. Every two hours during off peak times

When I tried to put it on automatic (always connected) it kept my phone always awake and. It wouldnt go to deep sleep at all. I searched and figured a way to get it to work with practically no battery drain though. I got the SMS notification thing working properly and I have email notification that works 24/7 no delay and no battery drain at all. Im not sure how it works but I guess the server sends some kind of invisible sms when you get a mail that causes the email app to sync at that time only.
Heres the link if you're interested. http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoc...om.ibm.help.lnt851.doc/Plan_SMS_AutoSync.html
Because I was on 4.2.2 with my Nexus and our traveler server at work was out of date, we couldn't use the official Lotus Notes Traveler app. With that I went through the play store trying all the various 3rd party mail programs until one worked with Lotus Notes via exchange sync mode. The best performing and full featured app was Touchdown HD or Touchdown for smart phones. The downside was the $19.95 price tag. But with a 30 day trial and my flashaholic ways, I never hit the 30 days
It rarely shows up on wakelock lists via betterbatterystats, and has never shown up on the default battery app.
Saturday our server was upgraded so I can finally use the official traveler app from IBM. what a piece of crap! I had 27% drain just from traveler in 6 hours, and reading the IBM forums today, IBM official response is, don't use always connected, use 15 minute intervals, or setup SMS push notifications (as mentioned above) which seems absurd.
I'm still not running the official app, I'm staying on Touchdown. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nitrodesk.droid20.nitroid&hl=en And now that their graphics are all Holo compliant, the app looks MUCH better.
To configure your server address for touchdown, (or any other exchange sync capable app, such as the built in mail app) it should be your.servername.com/traveler or your.servername.com/servlet/traveler The problem with the mail app is that calendar invites/acceptances don't sync right.
@SchmilK Well Im not sure about the Touchdown app but personally since I have unlimited SMS i use the SMS push thingy. I dont have any traveller wakelocks and the only time i saw it in my battery drain apps(since i startes using SMS push) was today when it was i think 2% but I had used the app alot today in writing and receiving email. But hey if I ever have issues I atleast know where to go. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip regarding Touchdown, works like a charm against our Lotus Notes server.
