Unfortunately in order to flash a new kernel (boot.img) you need to unlock your bootloader. This can be done by paying $24 to Alejandrissimo. Here is more about the process: http://unlock-bootloader.com/unlock/

No that's a kernel....you have to have an unlocked bootloader to flash that.

Hey I found this http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-unlock-bootloader-xperia-arc-play-neo-pro/ i think I will try it ,,,, once i feel ok to if not i'll pay to get it done
and this link http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions
As far as I know, those methods will not work for you since you have the Verizon Xperia Play. I believe the only way is to get Alejandrissimo to unlock it for $24.00
Fairly sure paying Alejandrissimo is the only way to unlock the bootloader atm. I had him unlock mine and he did a fine job. If you were concerned about anything you don't need to be. He is legit but it is $24.

If you have bootloader locked you will need to down grade your firmware to build 42 do this download program called flashtools available on xda.
Download from xda the .42 file use flashtools to load on to phone.
Then root with either zergrush method or from flashtools.
Once rooted use ota to update to latest build 62
if bootloader is unlocked then do as described in previous posts.
All software and tools are available in general or q&a sections.

I have the same problem...
With the same spec, how the best tutorial for noob like me..?
Hey guys,
I have a Sony Xperia Pro MK16a and I'm waiting for the ICS update. I'm tired of waiting so I searched it up on Google and I came across a thread in a website that says how you can manually update it with Flashtool and the ICS ftf file. Thing is that the file is named "mk16i_4.1.B.0.431_ready to root.rar" and since I have a mk16a, is it safe if I flash it onto my phone? I have a locked bootloader and I'm rooted. Also, if I can update that way, do I need the the ICS kernel, baseband or anything? Any help is greatly appreciated
That ready to root which website you got it ?

Both have different radio/basebands and flashing a MK16i ROM on a MK16a may make you have problems with Phone Calls/Data Usage.
So no, you'll have to wait.
EDIT: Wait no more, ameer's thread has the ROM for MK16a: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642480
Dunno if this work with OverLo4d/AeonWorld tutorial, but you can root it with Bootloader Unlocked with RootXperia.zip.

He has a xperia pro mk16a from fido his bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked so hes wondering if its possible to grab a stock ics firmware and flash it whit flashtool...
Since ameers thread has it for the mk16a does he need still a official ics kernel or baseband or anything else ? Or he can straight flash it and ready to go..

Still, there's the testpoint way to unlock bootloader, but inexperienced users (like myself) won't be able to do it.

I tried researching for the thread but couldn't find it.
I know you can pay someone with the correct Box or Dongle to unlock it with SETool, but there's a DIY thread with the use of S1Tool that I think it's for free.
Just couldn't find the tutorial, sorry.

The ftf (flashable via flashtool) on my thread includes kernel and baseband. So you do not have to flash them separately.

You need to unlock bootloader if you want to flash a real ICS-rom. You can do this on Sony's homepage. http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
Simply follow the instructions given on Sony's page or search in the development section for unlocking bootloader.
Then you can choose a ICS rom, for example CM9 or this one (but there are much more, simply look in the development section an try some different roms ) and flash it.
Sry my English isn't that good.
So today after watching tutorial videos and reading about it I finally made my mind and decided to flash/root my xperia arc. The build no of my stock was .431 now what I did was download the '.431 ready to root ftf' and flashed my phone, now when I tried to root it it gave me several errors mkdir failed for tmp, File exists and rm failed for *, No such file or directory and to make thing worse the memory card messed up and I had to format it and lost all the data. Now I've recovered the phone using pc companion but I failed very badly
I have no idea what exactly did I do wrong?

Read the stickys, and the individual threads for instructions.
Go to setting after flash the ready to root 4.0.3. Click at xperia. Click connectivity. Click USB connection mode. Choose MSC. The default is MTP if i not mistaken. Then root your phone and flash back 4.0.4 kernel.
This method i using when i root my phone last week. Before that it was giving me so many error.
Im on LOCKED BOOTLOADER while doing that

Yes, after unlocking the bootloader flash a kernel, and then install a custom rom that's pre-rooted. Much easier way if you don't mind not sticking with stock.

Normally I use the Arcknight kernel (Get version 3.5.1 or 3.3 because 3.6 is broken), but since Sony released the new .587 build I'm sticking with this kernel for now.
Now with Roms I suggest you go with this one its really good .
Okay I just rooted it sucessfully but I kept the bootloader locked.
How do I flash Arcknight 3.5.4 on my locked bootloader?

If you're going to root then you might as well unlock the BL. If IceBean needs a custom kernel then you can't use it, if not follow the instructions.

If you follow the instructions closely, there should be no problems.
Make sure you read the requirements first.
If your phone is built before 12W11 (check under battery), you can also use test point method.
For more info, search. Been discussed ****loads of times.
