Hi,
I've had enough of custom ROMs for now and want to go back to stock 4.0.4, without having to go through the whole unlock bootloader, root process - all the guides I find seem to say this is the only way, however what I want is a CWM-flashable stock ROM.
Is this possible or do I have to go back to square one (I still want root)?
Thanks,
Sahajesh
I give u a clue. Its in the galaxy nexus forum development section.

It is possible. You (or someone) has to package the stock system and boot images into a CWM-flashable package. It's not too difficult.

So you must already be unlocked then... Why not just fastboot (or heaven forbid even use a toolkit) the stock images and be done with it?

Hey guys, feel free to chew me out for this having been asked a million times but the other instances of this question always confuse me a bit so I wanted to ask for myself.
I was hoping someone could tell me how to return to rooted stock rather than running a custom rom. Also, once I return to stock, how do I get updates of the newest android software? Does a rooted gnex still get ota like our non root friends?
Please go easy on me for asking a question that I know has been answered before.

The easy way for you might be to check out mskip's tool kit found in dev section sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310. With it you can flash back to stock rom when you download it from Google directly http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html (make sure you choose the LTE one or GSM if thats what you need and choose the latest version) and place it in the appropriate location on your PC. Flashing is simple and should take just a few key presses but you need to install the drivers to work the program which are included, all this is included in mskips post and instructions.
So when your back to stock rom you will be able to get OTA notification again, what stops OTA notification happening is non stock rom (custom rom) , non original boot loader and custom recovery (clockwork mod recovery for example). So provided you go to stock rom, keep the boot loader version and recovery stock as included in the downloaded rom from Google site you should be OK to receive updates directly from Google. Root will allow OTA but bear in mind after OTA update completes you will loose root.
I hope this helps you out

I apologize if this has been addressed before. I did the prerequisite search and couldn't find a straight answer. I am new to flashing kernels and want to install one, specifically Faux123's for stock TW roms. Before I go down that rabbit hole, I want to make sure that if, at a later date, I ODIN back to stock to get my phone back to "day 1" with a factory reset, that the custom kernel will be gone and overwritten with the stock one. I don't want to make any changes that I can't easily undo. Thanks in advance.

Yes, flashing stock will overwrite w/e ROM/kernel (and root if you flash non-root stock).

I recently took the ota update to 4.1.2 mb1 and lost root. My question is can I use odin to flash [ROM|Stock Rooted] 3/3/13 Sprint Touchwiz Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (L710VPBMB1) Odex/DeOdex? And If so do I use the full ROM odex? And Do I have to flash anything besides the ROM? Or can I keep everything else stock?

Hey there buddy, welcome to XDA (I see this is your second post).
Anyways, do you still have a custom recovery? I'm assuming you don't, since it sounds like you went all the way back to stock unrooted in order o get the update (in the future, Freeza typically has the update for Root users a week or so after the OTA release, so no need to go back to stock unrooted).
Anyways, back to your current situation. Since you most-likely have the stock recovery, you'll have to go back to being rooted with either CWM or TWRP (I prefer TWRP, but they're both good). I personally use mskip's toolkit, it's fairly straightforward. You could also follow qbking77's rooting method. He does a good job explaining how to root. Samsung hasn't locked their bootloader and don't try to in their updates, so these rooting methods stand the test of time (and updates).
Once you have a custom recovery installed (or if you already have one installed), FIRST THING to do is perform a nandroid backup. THIS IS KEY. Once you have one done, go ahead and flash Freeza's Stock Rooted ROM. I'd recommend doing a clean flash, as it's the best way to minimize the chances of errors and bugs. Just wipe system and cache and dalvik cache, and then flash the downloaded ROM. And speaking of downloading, be sure to check the md5 sum of the download before you flash. Most problems with the stable ROMs here on XDA stem from bad downloads.
You can also check out other ROMs. I won't go too crazy on advertising here, but scroll through these two sub-forums, Android Development and Original Android Development. I've enjoyed most ROMs I've tried.
Hope this helps!

Ok, just out of curiousity... Before I took the OTA i was rooted 4.1.1 stock with stock recovery. Is there any way to do it the same? The method I used before was this [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter [SPR L710VPBLJ7] JB 4.1.1. It was super quick and easy.

Yeah, that same method should work. I personally like the custom recoveries, but understand your desires to leave it at stock recovery (not triggering the flash counter).
Like I mentioned before, Samsung hasn't (and most likely won't) locked their bootloaders, so any rooting method that has worked in the past should work in the future. Just make sure to read the last 3-4 pages of the thread for whatever method you're trying to use to see if there are any issues. I know an earlier version of mskip's toolkit was having issues with JB for a little bit (it's updated now).
Well I'm gonna give it a shot. Ill let you know how it turns out.

I've got a problem I installed the OTA and now I cant boot into android. Its stuck on starting apps. I have the stock recovery. How can I fix this?. What do I do? I can get to ODIN download mode. *edit** can get into safemode too. And I now have a custom recovery installed.
I still dont know what to do from here. How do I flash the downloaded rom because the new file I downloaded seems to be a zip and can only be flashed with CWM not ODIN. I cant place it in the right directory of my phone to do that.

I replied to your thread. I hope it works for what you need.
I own a T-mobile Galaxy S4 that is currently on android 4.3 with the MK2 modem flashed via oden and an MDL bootloader. I am planning to send off my device for warranty repair to Samsung. I know they normally update to the most recent android version etc. (4.4.2).
I have been combing through the threads on here and androidcentral to try to find an answers that is clear but I haven't found it. Essentially I want to know if they return my phone with 4.4.2 (which will be bootloader locked and knox enabled) if I can do the following.
1. Install TWRP or recovery environments. (some threads said you can't and that full root is not achievable to use Titaniumbackup etc.)
2. Downgrade to 4.3 if needed
3. Flash custom roms (eyeing up Insane Kit Kat V8 NB4 )
4. Will I have to use CH-AUTOROOT and with that will I be able to use TWRP
5. If anyone could point me to a thread that instructs on how to root in this scenario - that would be hugely helpful!
I appreciate anyone who can take the time to write back with answers to my questions.

Yes.
Sort of. You can't get teh 4.3 bootloader back or use older modems, which means you can't restore to stock 4.2 using Odin. You should be able to flash older custom roms though.

As a fellow baltimorean (or as I like to say baltimoron) thanks Skipjacks for the reply! It definitively sets my mind at ease when sending this phone in.

No problem, buddy. Here's a few wallappers I've made over the years that a fellow Bawlmoron might appreciate.

You don't even need root to flash and use a custom recovery, so that tells you something..

I am currently on d2att Snapshot cm11. I wanted to try KitKat, but meh. Running 4.4.2. When I rooted my phone at 4.3.3, I got too excited and forgot to make a nandroid back up (**** ME) so I don't have a back up I can return to. Anyway, I have TWRP and I really want to go back to Stock ICS. Not JB 4.3.3, but stock ICS. Is there anyway I can do this? I want to remove TWRP Recovery, CM, and go back to ICS if possible. Thanks....
More Info? (If Needed)
d2att Samsung Galaxy SIII i747
erm... rooted twice? (Rooted at ICS then updated to JB, I went down to 4.2.1?? i think and it removed root)
Battery Life of this phone is horrendous, I don't know what's wrong with it.
You should be posting questions in the questions forum, not the development forum.
Wrong forum and no you cannot downgrade because you will brick your phone since you were on 4.3.3.

You CAN downgrade the os version back to a stock rooted 4.3.3. You CANNOT downgrade your bootloader or it WILL brick your phone.
You may want to check on the AT&T Galaxy S III Android Development forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/development
There are a few options for stock ROMs and a lot of options for modified touchwiz ROMs
Moved to Q&A.
I believe the only way to get back to ICS would be with a jtag service as going back to ICS from JB or KK without jtag would brick your phone.
Does no one have a stock 4.4 flash?

Kinda seems to be some conflicting information, so let me give it a shot and hope I dont make any confusion worse.
First you need to verify your current base firmware/bootloader build. Install terminal emulator from the play store, open and enter this:
getprop ro.bootloader
This will tell you what build you have as your base. If it is a 4.3 or 4.4.2 build, you cannot flash any older firmware or modems. But you CAN still flash an ICS rom (or any other rom you want for that matter). (No guarantees this will run well though, since the version gap would be pretty large).
If your firmware/bootloader version is 4.1.2 or earlier, you are pretty much free to flash anything but 4.4.2 touchwiz roms.
I hope thst helps, and good luck!
