I've read a few reports suggesting that Orange will be making the desire available from today (Fri 2nd Apr) through its stores and possibly online. Think techradar confirmed this in a recent article.
Can anyone shed any more light on the chances of a release today?!
Go to bed.... wake up and see!
I would be suprised if they did as 4 days ago the guy at orange said he had no clue when it is out.
I rang Orange retentions at 09:01 this morning. No HTC Desire, no release date, not likely to be released later today. Just goes to show you can't always believe what you read on t'internet!
What they did say is that they feed back demand to the powers that be on a daily basis so the more people who ring up and ask for a Desire, the faster it will be released. Apparently they are waiting until their stock of HTC Hero and some other handsets is used up (around 3-4 days worth) before launching the Desire but will launch it earlier if they sense they are losing out to other networks.
If anyone hear different, let us know!

Well I'm gonna head off to Vodafone once Devicewire get them in - they've got a good £25/month deal with 600 mins +texts +'unlimited' internet. I have no real faith in Orange anymore unless retentions offer me a really good deal (and based on what I had to do 18 months ago, that is as likely as me playing for the Arsenal at the Nou Camp on Tuesday - although given our injuries... )
Oh and one more thing that will definitely delay it with Orange - last night the released the Xperia X10 - they'll want to shift them first before the HTC Desire. I originally wanted that but now the reviews haven't been that favourable - no multi-touch (ever!!!!), Android 1.6 with a promise to go to 2.1 (presumably when everyone has gone to 3.0) - although their mediascape, timescape interfaces do work well. Hardware wise it could've been the ultimate handset - 8MP camera, 4 inch hi-def screen etc. yet only being a smidgeon bigger than an iPhone. Yet SE screw up again by releasing a handset with a version of software that is 6 months old. And given their current record of not fully supporting their handsets when they're out (extrememly slow updates, with bugs not being ironed out) I think I'll be giving that one a miss...

Are they having a laugh? They'll releease it earlier if they sense they are losing out to other networks? OK, T-Mobile had first the exclusive to get it out first, but Vodafone have it and even bloody Virgin Media have it. Losing out to other networks is a masterpiece of understatement if VM have the thing and the supposed "best network of 2009" don't yet!
I doubt they will wait for them to get rid of Xerpia X10 as its the Desire's alternative option so people who dont like HTC and are Sony fans will go for that while others will want Desire.

Ordinarily that would be true but this is Orange we're talking about here!!!
Besides I believe they are the first to be selling the X10 so whilst they have that advantage they're gonna push that to the full. If you have a choice between that and the Desire then it fragments their sales for the X10. And let us not forget there is an outside chance of them not even stocking it all!
With the X1 they were constantly saying it was coming etc. and in the end they never officially released it (even though cpw and others were selling it on Orange plans). The X10 was listed as a coming soon phone for the last month or so, and yet the HTC Desire isn't even listed as coming soon.
It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it never came out on Orange (esp. if they can't get their crapware onto it)...

True, I hope that dont happen tho otherwise I will have to wait till July before changing to another network as upgrade can be done early but I cant afford to buy the rest of my contract and then get a new one.

Hehe - good news for you guys but:
http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-pho...nvBLDTszxGDLTK1j4vwH6JG!1816178946!-514848741
Still nothing for us! For the record I reckon it will come out but Lord knows when they will announce it. The Orange PR guy said 'early April, with the black edition late April'.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/29/htc-desire-black-edition-confirmed-coming-to-orange-uk-in-late/
When you consider that, it is quite bizarre that officially they don't even list it as coming soon...
Sometimes, Orange guys are not very well informed
I went in a shop two days ago (Desire already were on Orange website) and the man tell me he never heard speaking about the HTC Desire... We have so good sellers in our country
Well, once again I have spoken to Orqange and the best answer they could come out with was "within the next two weeks".
FFS it's typical Orange. Always the first to announce and the last to get!
I have, and I quote, been promised that "We'll send you a text message as soon as they have the handset available, so that you can arrange to obtain the phone".
Place your bets now on whether I'll actually get a text or not...

Yeah Orange are very bad at getting new phones in, I had this issue with the Nokia N78 and they never ended up getting it. Although that time, they had not announced they will have it while they did with Desire and its on the French website so in that way it must mean it WILL come but when is the question. They got till 14th as thats when I can upgrade ha ha but o2 not getting it till 19th and 3 till 20th so Orange got till then to be same time as others.
Have any of you guys considered making the switch to T-mobile seeing as how in a few months they will both be the same 1 network anyway?

I am - but the department that handles issuing the PAC codes aren't open today. Will be on the phone from 09:00 tomorrow to get it and then will order the T-Mobile package (£30/month 18 months) off mobiles.co.uk.
Apparently the phone isn't even in their reviews list and the bloke on the phone wasn't even sure they would be getting it!!!!
Bet i get a different story tomorrow when I finally get my PAC code....

If you go through T-Mobile themselves you'll get a much better deal, the are also much more reliable than mobiles.co.uk seem to be and if the phone breaks you have the added security that you can just take it back into a store for repair instead of bothering with mailing it off etc.
If you haggle on the phone you can get the prices down, I got from this:
Handset cost : £60
600 Minutes
500 Texts
Flexible Booster
3GB Internet
£25 P/M
To:
Handset Cost: Free
600 Mins
Unlimited Texts (the flexible booster)
3GB Internet
£25 P/M
Try these excuses:
- I just phoned up and was told the phone was £x (this is what I did, I was genuine but it worked, might have to phone twice as they have it on record I assume when you phoned up)
- x.com is doing a better deal
- Vodafone is doing a better deal.
Ah OK, thanks for the advice - I was assuming a lot of the good deals were for current customers - is your deal 18 months? I don't wish to be tied in to a two year contract...

No, Mine is 24 months but I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to do the same thing with a 18 month contract.
The 18 month equivalent of my plan is £30 a month.
I would change but like I said in previous post, I cant afford the £80 to finish off my contract till July and then another £25 a month from April so would cost me extra £80 to change over early and no point in waiting for July as by that time a new fone would be out.

Yes, most of this new community is from the Hero. We only had 2 phones with Android, and neither were amazing in any respects. So we are all (for the most part) moving over to the Evo.
Some people are upgrading other lines on their plans, or they are just outright buying the phone. We are a dedicated few. Hell, even some of most prestigious devs are the ones who have root and roms cooked for the Evo. (<3 Toast and Fresh!)

It's not that the phone is bad or anything... I think for a lot of the previous Hero owners that the Evo will be the first phone to have high end specs like the Nexus One, Incredible, etc. Plus, all the features and its size, among other things just are far too attractive and enticing, so of course most of us would make the switch.

If you're a Sprint Premier member, you get to upgrade every year. Doesn't really answer your question since that still means Oct 2010.
I'm trying to scratch together the cash to buy it full retail. Sucks but I'm a gadget nerd, can't help myself.
I had a $75 upgrade but other than that, I paid full price... there was no way I was gonna stay with my Hero that long. I love my EVO.
I got the Hero as a replacement for my old Touch Pro after it died for the 100th time. But that still means I have to wait until Oct '10....
Sprint online with a $75 upgrade from a different line on the account. I called in before I ordered online and the rep was able to apply a $70 credit to my next bill in addition to the $75 upgrade. She recomended I order online because they appear to be processing faster.
Do you think the evo will get the 200-250 ebay price like the hero did?

Eventually. When a new phone comes out, people will sell the old one on ebay.
bought mine this morning, $494.99, not regretting it for a second. loved my hero, but does anyone want it now? lol but seriously im selling it..
Added a new line
I added a new line to my family plan. It's only costing me an extra $72 (total over the course of 6 months) than what i should be with an upgrade. I feel the $72 is worth it compared to waiting 6 months for my upgrade. The Hero sucks and i just couldn't stand having it for 6 more months. It only cost me a grand total of $272 rather than $450 + $36 for activation.
I bought my Hero 2 months ago, and now it is on Ebay, Evo will be arriving tomorrow via UPS!!!
One of the ways I was always able to upgrade phones every year was to bill the phones (Mogul, Touch Pro, Hero, & EVO) to my account and longtime customer discounts always helped. However, since I can't upgrade for another 10 months, I had to pay full price for the EVO.
Bought my Evo from Sprint online, it is arriving tomorrow. I paid full price and I am hoping something irresistible drops in October so I can use my renewal for a new phone then.
I haven't been able to convince myself to sell my Hero.... I am thinking I will just keep it as a backup and I will keep flashing new ROMs for fun.
sold hero bought google I/O evo
I paid cash.
well I had a family plan and just added a new line for it then ported my home # to it... then just swaped online back to my mobile number, still saving $10 bucks a month after killin home phone

I sold my Hero for $300 cash to one of my employee's.lol I wasn't serious about the price at first, he thought was it was a good deal, It was Evo or nothing, I went home Ruu'd it to official 2.1, had it sold the next day. Should i feel bad, No way, I got a an Evo, hahahahaha
I got my Tilt 2 March of this year. While it's been fun, I notice less and less support for it everywhere. We've had some good times together, but it' can't be helped that it's time to switch over to an android phone. It's in really good condition and I was thinking about putting it on ebay. Can I charge at least $200 for this thing? I don't want to get a new phone until I can unload this one somehow. Yes it does seem like a waste, but it's rapidly becoming the phone not to have IMO. I've been rocking the Energy Rom since I've had it but the lack of apps and other goodies that the newer phones have are killing it right now. So that's why I think it's time for an upgrade.
This was my first smartphone. I upgraded from a motorola razor that I had for 3 years. I think that the next phone I get will be the last phone that I'll need. It just seems like the Tilt 2 didn't last as long as I thought it would.
how is the condition? if in mint condition 200 is easy on ebay
It's definitely mint. Never been dropped or anything like that. I'm just wondering if it'll be worth anything to the general public seeing as how there are bigger and better phones out there.

Seriously, I've only had mine since June, but I love it. Not my first Smartphone as I replaced an LG Incite with it and have been using a WinMo PDA since 2003. I have yet to not find an app for the things I do with a phone and for just entertainment. Is it perfect? Of course not, but is any phone? I don't think so. I have friends with iPhones who marvel at some of the tings my Tilt 2 does and I have friends with Android phones who are jealous of some of the features their phones are missing. If it isn't doing what you need it to do, then by all mean upgrade, but ditching a prefectly good, working phone just because you think the grass is greener on the other side is foolish. You might get $200 on eBay (I paid $250 for mine in June and it was NIB), but with Verizon getting iPhones in Jan and Windows Phone 7 due in December you better hurry as prices will be falling real soon.
I'm on the old SERO plan from sprint and loath to lose it. I was planning on waiting until some winmo7 phones were out before deciding if i should jump ship, or at least upgrade to a new phone.
I found out that starting tomorrow sprint is going to be offering an upgrade option to sero users which will still be significantly cheaper then the regular plans, but allow me to use any phone they offer. I was strongly considering the EVO, or possibly the possibly the epic. Not sure if i prefer a bigger screen over a brighter screen with a keyboard or not.
Anyhow, i don't know much about winmo7. My current phone is winmo6.5 (touch pro 2) and i've installed a copy of android on it. Other then the glitches causes by running a hacked copy of android, i like android.
Just wondering what the opinions are here as far as the winmo7 operating system compared to android and what the hardware running winmo7 is going to look like compared to the epic or evo ?
thanks
so you already have the feel of the general look/feel of android through the use of the rom you have on your phone now. i suggest looking at pocketnow's videos on WP7 to make up your own mind.
http://pocketnow.com/tag/wp7-videos
This will help you get started with whether or not WP7 is to your liking, and whether you see it as something that can meet your expectations of what you would like in your next smartphone.
Of note, I was reading an article that has rumoured from Wallstreet Journal that AT&T will be the only carrier at launch to hold WP7 devices, so you may have to wait till Q1 2011 to get a device on any other US network. Or you could try and buy it outright if you can, and continue using your current plan.
WP7 isn't coming to sprint or verizon for another year or so. MS says 6 months, but I think its gonna be anywhere from 6-12 months.
http://blogs.computerworld.com/1698...ws_phone_7_launch_what_was_microsoft_thinking
So unless you can wait for WP7 to come on Sprint or switch carriers, it will be a long time before you own a device like that. By the end of october, the general public should have the final release of WP7 and by then you will have plenty of reviews comparing WP7 to Android, iOS, and a squirrel so you will have plenty of information to make a judgement.
of course Omni pretty much has his head up his butt with his guess, so ignore it. Microsoft has actually stated "First half of 2011, and that's being conservative"...so yeah, could be 6 months, could be less...could even be a lot less.
I'm probably going to go with the evo. Gonna see if i can find a local store that has the evo and epic in stock so i can compare them first.

I might not wait either. Looks like the price i thought the phones were selling for on ebay isn't any better then sprint - although at least i still avoid a 2 year contract. One phone i was bidding for on ebay sold for just about the same exact price as sprint. Then again - i'll also avoid sales tax on ebay. So - maybe it is worth the wait
scratch that - got lucky - just snagged one for $330. Used for 1 month but supposed to be in perfect condition and with all the misc that comes with it. Seems like a good deal to me since that's $100 cheaper then what i would have paid through sprint, and i dont have to extend my contract either.

Did you ever think that in what you just quoted, "conservative" can go either way? As in that's AT LEAST how long it will take? Everyone is pointing to and MS is alluding to mid 2011 release, which falls into the 6-12 month window I and other said.
lol, less than 6 months? Thats march 2011 and before.

Yeah, but i really wanted to stay on sprint because i'm on the old sero plan and NO ONE can beat $30/month for what i get. I'm not going to list all the reasons now, but Android is much better.
Personally, I'm still waiting with Android. There is no way I'm jumping ship to Android before it gets universal firmware updates straight from Google. It's a complete fiasco right now.
Hopefully the rumor that it's coming in Gingerbread is true.

I assume gingerbread is the next version/update to android? I'm not worried about firmware updates. Seems like there's enough hacking going on that I'll probably wind up installing a hacked rom anyhow, instead of the official version.
Still waiting to get the phone. Probably get it in the mail tomorrow or monday.
1) You can always install ROMs from XDA.
2) Android phones in general are updated faster than all other phones (iPhone, BB,...).
who would rather not hear about a phone months before it might be available on my carrier of choice.
I'd like more focus on what's available now, how to fine tune it and get more life out of it than knowing a company is spending tons of money baiting us with what might one day be. Frankly I get really annoyed when that next best phone doesn't show up on my carrier.
I'd much prefer waking up one morning and bam newer, better phone from Samsung without even knowing it was coming.
I personally think it's one of the reasons many of us (me, me, me) struggle to hang onto a device for any length of time and, of course, that's likely why they do what they do. Get us lusting for the next, best, greatest thing ever so that by the time it's finally out we're ravenous to have it. Only for me, it totally backfired with the Nexus. When it was first announced I was gonna be first in line to buy it, but by now, meh I'll wait and see what's next.
Just a rambling thought.
My buddy got the VW Nexus and is taking it back for the razr maxx. He has had one problem after another, like the phone crashes and goes a boot loop if you turn on wifi.
The screen isn't really bigger thanks to the on screen buttons, my phone has more useful area. Its not worth it IMO, especially since I'm running ICS already on this...
I feel ya. Sprint got me with the evo, I bought the hero thirty two days before. When the galaxy 2 came out I didn't hesitate waiting for the nexus.
Ima pass on the galaxy 3, cause three months later a better phone will come to sprint with all the LTE bugs fixed.

It's just a phone to me. I don't even care about what new ones are coming out because it seems way too expensive to be updating every few months. I can't justify spending that much money that often on a phone.
I stuck with my old phone for two years and can easily live with this phone for two years.

I don't mind hearing about the new phones. I've come to an understanding that I will always have the coolest, greatest, best-est thing for 3 months, and then it gets replaced by something better.
The thing to remember is that the hardware doesn't get "old" it's that the software gets "newer". It's the same story with computers. You could have a Pentium computer, running Windows 3.1 and Word 5.0 and it will work like a charm. It's when you decide to try to put Windows 7 on that computer that the hardware fails you.
Our phones are the same. Take all the apps out now that work like a charm with your phone, install them, work with them and your phone should work just as well now as it will in 2 years. It's the fact that new apps come out that demand more from the processor, use the better camera, take advantage of better sound, and now your phone has"aged"
This is just the way the tech industry is. Hence why Moore's law is still in effect

Most likely.
Personally I would much rather know when a new phone is coming so I don't buy a phone a month or 2 before a better phone comes out. And I disagree that a better phone comes out every three months. The GSII came out like a year ago ( and almost a year ago in the US) and its still arguably the best phone out there. The Nexus doesn't have as good as hardware and personally I cannot understand why anyone would downgrade from a SGII to a Nexus, that's beyond me...The Note has a bigger screen and even though I woud like to have one its not worth it with the SGIII almost here. As for the HTC One X it probably is a little better than the SGII but honestly not by much. I think its crazy that HTC's new flagship phone has just about the exact same specs as Samsung's year old phone. What were they thinking (and I like HTC phones but the SGIII will blow it out of the water). So in conclusion if your phone is outdated in 3 months you either bought the phone late after it came out or you bought a crappy phone.

Personally I would much rather know when a new phone is coming so I don't buy a phone a month or 2 before a better phone comes out. And I disagree that a better phone comes out every three months. But see that's part of what I'm talking about. I too am waiting for the SGSIII but we have no idea if it will even make it to Sprint.
I've never waited an entire 2yrs or 22months whatever the limit is to upgrade a phone. I've bought several of mine at full price because I do like shiny new gadgets but only if they are an actual upgrade. For example, I was peeved at wasting an early upgrade on the stupid Evo 3D thinking it was an upgrade from the OG Evo, in my opinion it wasn't and I couldn't wait to drop that stupid phone when the E4GT came out.
Now that I'm getting more comfortable with flashing custom ROMs and themes I can see myself hanging onto my phone for longer than I normally would, heck I've already had it for almost 8 months which is a record for me.
If the SGSIII comes out and Sprint gets it (or a good variation of it) then I'll be all over that, I just hate the months and months of speculation that, for us, usually amounts to jack squat.

I have heard (might be or not be true) from several sources not only will sprint get it but will also get it first in the US. I love changing phones often as well and have been contemplating switching to Att pay as you go or Straighttalk pay as you go. Its only 50 a month for unlimited everything and you can just buy international unlocked phones. Also Att and straittalk(they use Att towers) have faster data speeds. Plus international phones are always release first.

+1 Tried to talk my wife into straight talk myself.. As long as you don't go over 2gb of data you should be good. I must admit it's still tempting.. sell the Epic and get a new GSM nexus for $399
sent from my Epic Touch

Why the heck would you do that Nexus is a downgrade...Just wait for GS3 and if you can't wait grab the HTC One X for only $150 more than the Nexus, then just sell it for a SG3 if you like more. And Straight talk seems good but was leaning towards Att Go phone $50 plan, you get unlimited EVERYTHING, you just have to activate it in a dumb phone like a motarola Razr and switch the Sim card. I know it sounds to good to be true but ive done research and others on XDA say it works.
